PRE-PAID FUNERALS GOOD OPTION
Just before Lori
Fleet’s grandmother
passed
away, the family
gathered at the
hospital to say By: Gina Stanley
their last goodbye’s.
“She was 93 years old,” said
Fleet, of Edmond. “When
she got sick, we all knew
this could be it. Of course,
it’s always difficult to lose a
loved one, but she made it
as easy on us as possible.”
Fleet’s grandmother had
done some research and
After her death, the family
payments -- to make.
Contrast that with a family
who loses a loved one
unexpectedly.
A growing trend for older
Americans is to plan in
advance for the inevitable.
About 23 percent of people
over age 50 have prepaid at
least a portion of funeral or
b u r i a l e x p e n s e s f o r
themselves or someone
else, according to a recent
AARP survey.
B u t p r e - p a y m e n t i s
something everyone should
consider, according to
Brumley. He says that
sitting down with a funeral
director can accomplish
some important goals.
“I think having a price
guarantee through prep
l a n n i n g i s t h e m o s t
important thing. I’ve seen
families save substantial
money,” said Brumley. “It
gives people an opportunity
to establish what type of
service they want while
surviving members of the
family are relieved of
stressful decisions and a
financial burden.”
According to the AARP,
there are 2 million deaths
every year while funeral
costs continue to escalate.
Several consumer advocacy
g r o u p s r e c o m m e n d
planning ahead.
“The average price for
funerals is much higher in
other parts of the country,”
said Brumley. “Our prices
begin at $1,500 for a direct
cremation and go up from
there, depending on a wide
v a r i e t y o f o p t i o n s
available.”
According to Brumley, preneed
contracts typically
cover all funeral home
s e r v i c e c h a r g e s a n d
merchandise. Additional
funds can be paid in for
miscellaneous expenses
such as cemetery charges
and obituary announce-
ments.
Customers have the option
o f m a k i n g m o n t h l y
payments or paying the full
amount up front, for which
t h e r e i s s o m e t i m e s a
discount. The Oklahoma
S t a t e I n s u r a n c e
Commissioner governs all
pre-paid contracts and sets
l i m i t s o n t y p e s o f
investment accounts used.
“Incentive discounts are
available because we are
going to grow that money
for the benefit of the
customer,” said Brumley.
“The funds go into a trust
account in the bank or in a
life insurance policy, and
the family is informed about
that investment. The earlier
you set up a pre-need
account, the more you can
save when the need for our
services arise.”
Mark Harris, author of
Grave Matters: A Journey
T h r o u g h t h e M o d e r n
Funeral Industry to a
Natural Way of Burial
recommends asking if you
can transfer the funds to a
different funeral home
should you decide to move
out of the funeral home's
s e r v i c e a r e a . H e a l s o
r e c o m m e n d s g e t t i n g
something in writing about
what happens if the funeral
home should go out of
business or come under
new ownership.”
When selecting a funeral
home most people use
referrals from friends and
family. Brumley cautions
against on-line review sites,
particularly those that don’t
require posters to leave a
name. He also pointed out
other important factors to
consider.
“The personalities of the
owner, manager and staff
are important,” he said.
Letter to the Editor:
Praise to attorney Jim Bob Miller for standing tall for the constitution
and the rights of the citizens I feel were falsly arrested.
One would think the magistrates who sign these warrants would
know the law, I know the law. These judges, unlike the magistrates of
the 50's & 60's sign these warrants liken to raffles at a sports rally. No
consideration
for the collateral damage they do to the poor, especially the high
dollar traffic fines. In some cases, there are sur charges of $200 per
ticket just to file. Some of these fines, over $1,000. For minimum
wage citizens, after bills and fuel to work, it takes almost six to eight
months to give $1,000.
However, when warrants are signed on the poor, jail time causes
loss of jobs, utilities not paid, the city cannot collect the water bills,
landlords are upset, pets don't get fed. Magistrates of the 50's & 60's
had a different mentality of economics and civic affairs. Jobs and
livelihood were always given priority of consideration, especially
children's drivers license suspension.
Signed: The Council Man
Taste is king for beef consumers
Despite tighter budgets and
busier lives, it's not price or
convenience that tops the
list for deciding whether to
buy beef - it's taste. The
most recent Consumer Beef
Index, based on a Beef
C h e c k o f f - s p o n s o r e d
s u r v e y , s h o w e d a n
i m p r e s s i v e 8 8 % o f
consumers polled said
when choosing between
beef, chicken, pork and
fish, a great tasting product
was very or extremely
important.
M a r k M c C u l l y, v i c e
president of production for
Certified Angus Beef LLC,
said that's good news for
cattle producers.
"Not only is beef already
America's favorite protein,"
he said at the recent Illinois
Cattle Feeders Meeting in
Oregon, Ill. "But we know
what it takes to make sure
c o n s u m e r s g e t t h e
consistently delicious
product they expect."
He explained that the
characteristics of beef that
affect palatability are
f l a v o r, j u i c i n e s s a n d
tenderness, and those are
primarily reflected in the
USDA quality grade of each
c a r c a s s . T h e m a i n
d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n a
Select, Choice or Prime
stamp comes down to
marbling, which is a highly
heritable trait.
" T h a t ' s w h y i t ' s s o
important to stay focused
on increasing marbling in
our cattle," McCully said.
"It's still our best strategy to
m e e t i n g c o n s u m e r
demands for our end
product."
Management factors like
h e a l t h , p r e - f e e d l o t
nutrition, disposition, the
use of growth technologies
and days on feed also affect
quality grade, he said, so
utilizing best practices
throughout the animal's
lifecycle is another way to
increase the odds of a
favorable rating.
The annual Power of Meat
survey released in February
identified some notable
trends in meat preparation.
McCully said 65% of
consumers surveyed cook
beef at home once to three
times per week. Beef was
only slightly edged out by
chicken in the frequency
category. While slightly
fewer home cooks are
incorporating meat into
their meals three times per
week or more (69%, down
from 74% in 2012), he said
the lower number likely
reflects fewer meals being
cooked at home overall.
“Regardless," he said,
"cattlemen need to stay
focused on making sure
those beef meals, whether
served once or seven times
a w e e k , a r e a g r e a t
experience every time."
He said where consumers
get their preparation advice
is also changing, at least
among the younger crowd.
While 50% of home cooks
65 and older still consult an
old-fashioned cookbook,
overall people are turning
to the Web, using online
recipes, food manufacturer
sites and YouTube.
That increased media
presence brings not only
answers, but questions,
too. Today's informationdriven
consumer wants a
myriad of details before
t h e y m a k e a n y m e a t
Many challenges lie ahead
in the beef industry, but
with them come o
pportunities.
And as long as producers
strive to raise better quality
cattle, McCully said, they'll
be armed to face those
challenges head-on - and
How to Buy a Horse
Ethan walks into a barn
with a farmer to buy a
horse
The horse is laid down in
some straw. After giving
the horse the once-over
Ethan says, "This horse
hasn't got any shoes on."
The farmer replies "Well
he hasn't got up yet.
Two west country yokels
were on the train heading
of them noticed some cows.
'What a lovely bunch of
cows.' he remarked.
'Not a bunch, herd,' his mate
replied.
'Heard of what?'
'Herd of cows.'
'Of course I've heard of cows.'
'No, a cow herd.'
‘What do I care what a cow
heard. I have no secrets to
keep from a cow.'
Paul thought to himself,
'Wow, a talking horse.'
Dollar signs started
appearing in his head. So
he runs to the house and
the old rancher is sitting
on the porch.
Paul tells the farmer, 'Hey
man I'll give you $5,000
CHALLENGE
WEEK 14
Get Organized! Finding what
type of organization you
prefer can go a long way to
helping you achieve that.
I once argued with my college
professor about something
known as “Management By
Objective”. It contains a
p r e m i s e t h a t o n e m u s t
complete more difficult tasks
first in order to set the tone for
an organized day. Even then, I
knew my personal style was to
get easier, smaller tasks done
first before tackling the bigger
jobs.
In “How to Be Organized in
Spite of Yourself: Time and
Space Management That
Works With Your Personal
Style,” by Sunny Schlenger
and Roberta Roesch, no one
organizational system will
work for everyone. They offer
s h o r t q u i z z e s t o h e l p
d e t e r m i n e w h a t y o u r
organizational style is. Where
do you fit in?
Organizing Time:
Hopper – frequently and
q u i c k l y s w i t c h e s t a s k s
throughout the day. They
e n j o y v a r i e t y a n d l i k e
gratification of completing
small jobs but can be easily
distracted by other people or
technology.
Perfectionist Plus – seeks
excellent performance in
every activity with high
s t a n d a r d s . M a y h a v e
difficulty distinguishing
between valuable and less
valuable use of time.
Allergic to Detail – enjoys
thinking about the big picture
and new ideas, sometimes
neglecting smaller details or
follow-through.
Fence Sitter – sees both sides
of issues and thoroughly
researches decisions, both
large and small, sometimes to
the point of no action.
Cliff Hanger – thrives on
adrenaline, deadlines, and
e x t e r n a l p r e s s u r e , b u t
sometimes loses track of
everything being juggled.
Organizing Space:
E v e r y t h i n g O u t – l i ke s
r e m i n d e r s a n d p r o j e c t
materials in plain sight and
within reach.
Nothing Out – prefers surfaces
cleared and materials stored
away
Right Angler – enjoys things
looking a certain way, with the
appearance of precision.
Pack Rat – keeps almost
everything.
To t a l S l o b – b e l i e v e s
organizing things is a waste of
time that could be spent on
creative pursuits.
Whether in the workplace or
at home, understanding your
own organization preferences
h e l p s y o u c r e a t e a n
environment suited to your
needs. Understanding the
styles of others,
can lead to a more
peaceful existence
and less
frustration.
WHO LOVES TAXES?
YOU HAVE LESS THAN ONE WEEK!
I know how excited you must be. Preparing to report all
financial information to the government is such a joyful time
of year.
Nobody likes paying taxes, so why do we do it? Other than jail
time and confiscation of personal property, what can they do
to us?
I mean really -- this whole arrangement could be so much
simpler. There HAVE been a few politicians who have
suggested overhauls for our current tax system. From
abolishing the IRS altogether to making just one sort of tax,
which everyone pays, these suggestions have fallen on the
deaf ears of our legislators.
For those of you who would like to join me in my time
machine, we could transport ourselves back to 1861. Of
course, we’d have to give up indoor plumbing and Hot Pockets,
but we’d pay no income taxes!
Did you know that income taxes were enacted in 1862 to
support the Union’s Civil War efforts? So basically, we taxed
everybody so we could fight ourselves. Brilliant.
I know, I know. The ultimate outcome of that war may
outweigh the need for a temporary tax, but here’s a little
problem. It’s not temporary anymore!
Our government found a way to make the 16th Amendment
permanent. I’m not sure if there were turn-of-the-century
lobbyists and Big Corporate Bad Guys back then, but
SOMEBODY started us down a road that seems to have no Uturn
access, but many hazards and potholes.
What is my simpler plan, you ask? Here it is. For every dollar
used by Congress on stupid things – such as the $175,587
spent to “determine if cocaine makes Japanese
quail engage in sexually risky behavior” (I am
not kidding) – we get to add one dollar to what the
government owes US. Pretty soon we’d all have
plenty of money!
But those poor Japanese quail. Where will they
get their fix?
Very little educated, hard worker looking for work. I have
been posting off and on that I have been looking for work
and no one seems to be hiring. The places that have called
me when I turned in an application and they realize I have
no vehicle they turn me away. Again I need work, I didn't
finish high school because of bullying. 918-424-0220.
Please give me a call willing to work for minimum wage. I
I would like to say I wish something could be done. I just
replaced the third window in two years in my house after
the bombs went off today, it popped my front storm door
and shattered it. I have put in two bedroom windows, my
foundation is falling apart, my walls and ceilings are
cracking and the thing of it is noting can be done. People if
you have a home or value it, don't live here, your home
won't last. I am sick of my home being destroyed, I worked
hard to have it and it's just falling apart.
This year, 2013, my health insurance increased by 10
percent, home insurance 15 percent, my auto insurance,
dental insurance both went up. Now I'm reading my flood
insurance may "skyrocket." My fixed-income raise just
doesn't cut it. Anyone hiring a 71-year-old?
Go ahead and live your pipe dream, if that is what makes
you happy then my all means, go after it. Just in the process
learn to pay what you owe first and quit getting deeper into
debt. For goodness sake.
Do we really need to continue to give millions to other
countries when we have a country that is in dire need itself?
I cannot giver anymore, our country cannot give anymore
either.
I am so sick and tired of rich people ripping off the
government and get 5,000 in food stamps and they don’t
even need it and poor people get no food stamps when they
really need it. I just got knocked down to 16 dollars on my
food stamps and I have no other income coming into my
house and I am expected to pay 300 dollars more on food
out of my moms check and we do not even have the money
to get extra food. Why is it that rich people get millions of
dollars in a paycheck and five thousand dollars in food
stamps and the poor people can’t even pay their phones? I
think if you are making more than a thousand dollars and
have kids under age 18 you should not get food stamps at
all. Look at the house you are living in, you obviously have
more than enough money to buy groceries.
To those who think that taking a
day at work to prank everyone
because it was April Fools Day,
I am not amused. We are in a
professional setting and when
you chose to prank many of
your co-workers, finding it
hilarious, most of us did not.
Your antics were taken too far
and upper management was
informed immediately of your
actions. Now you are without a
job due to your juvenile
behavior. I would think today
you might be second guessing
your actions.
None of the problems in D.C. will be solved until we have term
laws they live by, we will always have corruption.
I would like to Sound off! I am an elderly person who needed
some work done around my home. A man just happened to
come by with a business card and gave me an estimate for his
services. He charged me in advance for the bid given, and
came right out to get started. After two hours he said he had to
leave to go get a part and he has not been seen since. Now
$1,100 and three weeks later I have not seen him. I tried to call
the number on the card and it has been disconnected. Buyer
beware! I had to learn the hard way not to pay someone in
advance. I am on a fixed income and this has hurt me. Shame
on you!
I grow increasingly weary of those who claim the poor pay no
taxes. They pay sales, property and gasoline taxes, along with
other taxes. If they can get any kind of job, they pay 7.65
percent of their salary for Social Security/Medicare. Anything
the poor pay is substantial considering what they lack.
I live in a very nice neighborhood, most homes average value
is approximately $245,00 and up. We all in our area take pride
in the exterior of our homes and our lawns, it looks nice and
brings value to our area. One of our neighbors two doors down
maintained their exterior and their landscaping rivaled any
yard in this area. Sadly, due to a transfer, they sold their home.
This was two years ago, and what a difference two years can
make. The family that purchased the home have let it all go, a
once beautiful site has now become a dumping ground. Dead
shrubbery, weeds, old broken bikes in the yard and dog dew in
the backyard that never gets scooped. The smell is
overwhelming at times. Don’t suggest that the neighbors speak
to the family, that attempt has already been made. Any ideas?
I am retired and love my home, but this eyesore is almost too
much to bear.
Horticulture
Tips
As we move into the month
of April, many homeowners
and gardeners are staring to
put their full attention on
t h e l a w n a n d o u t d o o r
landscaping activities. Here
i s t h e l i s t o f A p r i l
horticulture chores.
Flowers:
•Most bedding plants,
summer flowering bulbs and
annual flower seeds can be
planted after danger of last
frost. This happens around
mid April in Oklahoma.
Hold off mulching these
crops until spring rains
s u b s i d e a n d s o i l
temperatures warm up.
Wa r m s e a s o n a n n u a l s
should not be planted until
soil temperatures are in the
low 60’s.
•Let spring flowering bulb
foliage remain as long as
possible before removing it.
•Harden off transplants
outside in partial protection
from sun and wind prior to
planting.
Vegetables:
•Plant vegetable crops in
successive plantings to
ensure a steady supply of
p r o d u c e r a t h e r t h a n
harvesting all at once.
• Wa t c h f o r c u t w o r m
damage and add flea beetle
scouting to your list of
activities in the vegetable
garden.
•Wait a little longer for it to
warm up before planting
cucurbit crops and okra.
Of course, calories are
printed on the label as well.
For anyone trying to lose,
maintain or even gain
weight, that is an important
attention. In order to get the
total number of calories in a
p a c k a g e o r b e v e r a g e ,
multiply the calories per
serving by the total number
of servings. Generally, 400
calories or more per serving
is high. Something in the
100-calorie range is more
moderate.
The Nutrition Facts Label
also lists specific nutrients
for foods and drinks. It is a
good idea to limit saturated
fat, cholesterol and sodium,
which can contribute to high
blood pressure and heart
disease. On the other hand,
getting enough of other
nutrients such as dietary
fiber, Vitamins A and C,
calcium and iron encourages
good health.
The Percent Daily Values
(%DV) are recommended
daily amounts of certain
nutrients based on a 2,000calorie
diet. Monitoring
those figures can help track
A Safe And
Swinging
Way To
Encourage
Play
There’s good news for parents
who want to protect the
environment while providing
their children with a safer
place to play outdoors.
The company recognized as
the maker of the original
redwood playset, Woodplay
Playsets, has announced that
its swing sets are now made
using lumber that’s certified
sustainable. In fact, their
s u p p l i e r o f C a l i f o r n i a
redwood has received a
conservation award from the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Safe And Strong
Making Woodplay Playsets
from California redwood adds
to their safety. That’s because
redwood resists disease and
decay and has less shrinkage.
I n a d d i t i o n , t h e s e t s ’
adjustable A-frame design
allows level placement in a
yard, despite uneven or
irregular ground. Also, the fact
that sets are made with
notched angle braces with
w o o d - o n - w o o d d e s i g n
reduces the load on hardware
and adds structural support.
This original Woodplay
feature is now an industry
standard.
The Value Of Outdoor Play
In addition to being safe and
sustainable, swing sets such as
these can be an important
resource for parents who want
ASTROLOGY
UPDATE
ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Refuse to get involved in idle chatter; it will only make you look bad. Things at home may be somewhat rocky. Don't blame
everything on your mate.
TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Go out with friends and avoid the situation on the home front. If you can work at home, do so. Do not sign your life away.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You can surprise members of your family, which in turn will bring you a pat on the back. Don't let relatives get the better of
you. Love can be heightened if you sit down and discuss your future plans.
CANCER (June 22-July 22) You must take care not to overexert yourself if involved in sports. You can make money if you are careful not to let it
trickle through your fingers. Don't overspend to impress someone who interests you.
LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Resist secret affairs that could be detrimental to your reputation. You could make extra cash through creative hobbies. Your
position may be in question if you haven't been pulling your weight.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) A romantic infatuation from your past may surface if you frequent places that you both used to go. Any intimate
relationships with colleagues will lead to gossip that could easily affect your position. Consider applying for a job in another part of the world.
LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Take time to look at any outdated papers or possible investments. Be careful not to exaggerate when interacting with
your lover. You need to clear up some important personal documents before the end of the year.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your position may be in question if you haven't been pulling your weight. Find out what they're up to, and see if you
can pick up where you left off. Opportunities for romance will develop through group endeavors; however, the association isn't likely to last.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You will have a blowup today if your partner does things that you feel are not aboveboard. A lot has changed and
so have you. Don't be afraid of opposition; your suggestions are valid.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) A residential move may be necessary to get a better job. Take matters in hand when it comes to dealing with
clients or colleagues. Get involved in groups that can offer intellectual stimulation.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Responsibilities with respect to older relatives may be a burden. Loss is evident if you don't consider all the angles.
Take a close look at documents before signing on the dotted line.
PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Home improvement projects will go well if you delegate work to all your family members. A change in position could be
better than you thought. You'll find it easy to meet new people.
