AARP survey. 

B u t p r e - p a y m e n t i s 

something everyone should 

consider, according to 

Brumley. He says that 

sitting down with a funeral 

director can accomplish 

some important goals. 

“I think having a price 

guarantee through prep 

l a n n i n g i s t h e m o s t 

important thing. I’ve seen 

families save substantial 

money,” said Brumley. “It 

gives people an opportunity 

to establish what type of 

service they want while 

surviving members of the 

family are relieved of 

stressful decisions and a 

financial burden.” 

According to the AARP, 

there are 2 million deaths 

every year while funeral 

costs continue to escalate. 

Several consumer advocacy 

g r o u p s r e c o m m e n d 

planning ahead. 

“The average price for 

funerals is much higher in 

other parts of the country,” 

said Brumley. “Our prices 

begin at $1,500 for a direct 

cremation and go up from 

there, depending on a wide 

v a r i e t y o f o p t i o n s 

available.” 

According to Brumley, preneed 

contracts typically 

cover all funeral home 

s e r v i c e c h a r g e s a n d 

merchandise. Additional 

funds can be paid in for 

miscellaneous expenses 

such as cemetery charges 

and obituary announce- 

ments. 

Customers have the option 

o f m a k i n g m o n t h l y 

payments or paying the full 

amount up front, for which 

t h e r e i s s o m e t i m e s a 

discount. The Oklahoma 

S t a t e I n s u r a n c e 

Commissioner governs all 

pre-paid contracts and sets 

l i m i t s o n t y p e s o f 

investment accounts used. 

“Incentive discounts are 

available because we are 

going to grow that money 

for the benefit of the 

customer,” said Brumley. 

“The funds go into a trust 

account in the bank or in a 

life insurance policy, and 

the family is informed about 

that investment. The earlier 

you set up a pre-need 

account, the more you can 

save when the need for our 

services arise.”

are important,” he said.

Praise to attorney Jim Bob Miller for standing tall for the constitution 

and the rights of the citizens I feel were falsly arrested. 

One would think the magistrates who sign these warrants would 

know the law, I know the law. These judges, unlike the magistrates of 

the 50's & 60's sign these warrants liken to raffles at a sports rally. No 

consideration 

for the collateral damage they do to the poor, especially the high 

dollar traffic fines. In some cases, there are sur charges of $200 per 

ticket just to file. Some of these fines, over $1,000. For minimum 

wage citizens, after bills and fuel to work, it takes almost six to eight 

months to give $1,000. 

However, when warrants are signed on the poor, jail time causes 

loss of jobs, utilities not paid, the city cannot collect the water bills, 

landlords are upset, pets don't get fed. Magistrates of the 50's & 60's 

had a different mentality of economics and civic affairs. Jobs and 

livelihood were always given priority of consideration, especially 

children's drivers license suspension.

Taste is king for beef consumers 

Despite tighter budgets and 

busier lives, it's not price or 

convenience that tops the 

list for deciding whether to 

buy beef - it's taste. The 

most recent Consumer Beef 

Index, based on a Beef 

C h e c k o f f - s p o n s o r e d 

s u r v e y , s h o w e d a n 

i m p r e s s i v e 8 8 % o f 

consumers polled said 

when choosing between 

beef, chicken, pork and 

fish, a great tasting product 

was very or extremely 

important. 

M a r k M c C u l l y, v i c e 

president of production for 

Certified Angus Beef LLC, 

said that's good news for 

cattle producers. 

"Not only is beef already 

America's favorite protein," 

he said at the recent Illinois 

Cattle Feeders Meeting in 

Oregon, Ill. "But we know 

what it takes to make sure 

c o n s u m e r s g e t t h e 

consistently delicious 

product they expect." 

He explained that the 

characteristics of beef that 

affect palatability are 

f l a v o r, j u i c i n e s s a n d 

tenderness, and those are 

primarily reflected in the 

USDA quality grade of each 

c a r c a s s . T h e m a i n 

d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n a

marbling, which is a highly 

heritable trait.

important to stay focused 

on increasing marbling in 

our cattle," McCully said. 

"It's still our best strategy to

Management factors like 

h e a l t h , p r e - f e e d l o t 

nutrition, disposition, the 

use of growth technologies 

and days on feed also affect 

quality grade, he said, so 

utilizing best practices 

throughout the animal's 

lifecycle is another way to 

increase the odds of a 

favorable rating. 

The annual Power of Meat 

survey released in February 

identified some notable 

trends in meat preparation. 

McCully said 65% of 

consumers surveyed cook 

beef at home once to three 

times per week. Beef was 

only slightly edged out by 

chicken in the frequency 

category. While slightly 

fewer home cooks are 

incorporating meat into 

their meals three times per 

week or more (69%, down 

from 74% in 2012), he said 

the lower number likely 

reflects fewer meals being 

cooked at home overall. 

“Regardless," he said, 

"cattlemen need to stay 

focused on making sure 

those beef meals, whether 

served once or seven times 

a w e e k , a r e a g r e a t 

experience every time." 

He said where consumers 

get their preparation advice 

is also changing, at least 

among the younger crowd. 

While 50% of home cooks 

65 and older still consult an 

old-fashioned cookbook, 

overall people are turning 

to the Web, using online 

recipes, food manufacturer 

sites and YouTube. 

That increased media 

presence brings not only 

answers, but questions, 

too. Today's informationdriven 

consumer wants a 

myriad of details before 

t h e y m a k e a n y m e a t 

p u r c h a s e . I s i t s a f e ? 

Wholesome? Fresh? Local? 

How were the live animals

of Indianola, went to be with her Lord and 

Savior, Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the 

age of 80 

Born July 16, 1932, to Erma Turner and 

E.R. King. She was Granny Mac to half 

of Pittsburg County as she worked in the 

nursery at McAlester Regional for 25 

years as an LPN. 

She was a member of Deere's Chapel 

Full Gospel Church. She enjoyed being 

outdoors, fishing, cooking, drinking Diet 

Pepsi, and spending time with her

Wanda was born June 25, 1937 in 

Hartshorne to Boss and Violet (Hulsey) 

Smith. She grew up in Haileyville where 

she attended school. In 1956, she 

moved with her husband and son to 

Houston, Texas and worked as a 

receptionist. Wanda moved back to 

Hartshorne in 1966 where she worked at 

various jobs until she was employed by 

the Oklahoma Tax Commission in 

Oklahoma City in 1984. After retirement 

in 1999, she established a home in 

Hartshorne. 

She married Arthur “J.R.” Chaney on 

December 7, 1999 in Eureka Springs, 

Arkansas. Many thanks to Dr. Carol 

Gambrill for her wonderful care and 

Heartland Hospice.

her church and friends there. She also 

enjoyed 30’s and 40’s music, reading, 

fishing, cooking, sports events, movies, 

traveling, and participating in various

Charles Ray Connor was born June 29,

was a lifelong resident of Haileyville and 

graduated from Haileyville High School. 

Mr. Connor was married to Alice Susan 

Anderson on February 20, 1965 in 

Haileyville. Mr. Connor worked for the 

Rock Island Railroad as a Brakeman and 

also at O.S.P. in McAlester and last for 

OAI in Hartshorne in security. He also 

served a 6 year enlistment in the 

Oklahoma National Guard. He was a 

member of the Haileyville Baptist 

Church. His hobbies included hunting 

and fishing.

WHO LOVES TAXES? 

YOU HAVE LESS THAN ONE WEEK! 

I know how excited you must be. Preparing to report all 

financial information to the government is such a joyful time 

of year. 

Nobody likes paying taxes, so why do we do it? Other than jail 

time and confiscation of personal property, what can they do 

to us? 

I mean really -- this whole arrangement could be so much 

simpler. There HAVE been a few politicians who have 

suggested overhauls for our current tax system. From 

abolishing the IRS altogether to making just one sort of tax, 

which everyone pays, these suggestions have fallen on the 

deaf ears of our legislators. 

For those of you who would like to join me in my time 

machine, we could transport ourselves back to 1861. Of 

course, we’d have to give up indoor plumbing and Hot Pockets, 

but we’d pay no income taxes! 

Did you know that income taxes were enacted in 1862 to 

support the Union’s Civil War efforts? So basically, we taxed 

everybody so we could fight ourselves. Brilliant. 

I know, I know. The ultimate outcome of that war may 

outweigh the need for a temporary tax, but here’s a little 

problem. It’s not temporary anymore! 

Our government found a way to make the 16th Amendment 

permanent. I’m not sure if there were turn-of-the-century 

lobbyists and Big Corporate Bad Guys back then, but 

SOMEBODY started us down a road that seems to have no Uturn 

access, but many hazards and potholes. 

What is my simpler plan, you ask? Here it is. For every dollar 

used by Congress on stupid things – such as the $175,587 

spent to “determine if cocaine makes Japanese 

quail engage in sexually risky behavior” (I am 

not kidding) – we get to add one dollar to what the 

government owes US. Pretty soon we’d all have 

plenty of money! 

But those poor Japanese quail. Where will they 

get their fix?

Very little educated, hard worker looking for work. I have 

been posting off and on that I have been looking for work 

and no one seems to be hiring. The places that have called 

me when I turned in an application and they realize I have 

no vehicle they turn me away. Again I need work, I didn't

can walk to work, it will take me a while to get there but I 

will work. 

I would like to say I wish something could be done. I just 

replaced the third window in two years in my house after 

the bombs went off today, it popped my front storm door 

and shattered it. I have put in two bedroom windows, my 

foundation is falling apart, my walls and ceilings are 

cracking and the thing of it is noting can be done. People if 

you have a home or value it, don't live here, your home 

won't last. I am sick of my home being destroyed, I worked 

hard to have it and it's just falling apart. 

For people who are interested to what is added to a lot of our 

products, especially our food, look for yourself, go to Google 

and look up products that contain fetus.

This year, 2013, my health insurance increased by 10 

percent, home insurance 15 percent, my auto insurance, 

dental insurance both went up. Now I'm reading my flood 

insurance may "skyrocket." My fixed-income raise just 

doesn't cut it. Anyone hiring a 71-year-old? 

Go ahead and live your pipe dream, if that is what makes 

you happy then my all means, go after it. Just in the process 

learn to pay what you owe first and quit getting deeper into 

debt. For goodness sake. 

Do we really need to continue to give millions to other 

countries when we have a country that is in dire need itself? 

I cannot giver anymore, our country cannot give anymore 

either. 

I am so sick and tired of rich people ripping off the 

government and get 5,000 in food stamps and they don’t 

even need it and poor people get no food stamps when they 

really need it. I just got knocked down to 16 dollars on my 

food stamps and I have no other income coming into my 

house and I am expected to pay 300 dollars more on food 

out of my moms check and we do not even have the money 

to get extra food. Why is it that rich people get millions of 

dollars in a paycheck and five thousand dollars in food 

stamps and the poor people can’t even pay their phones? I 

think if you are making more than a thousand dollars and 

have kids under age 18 you should not get food stamps at 

all. Look at the house you are living in, you obviously have 

more than enough money to buy groceries.

I would like to Sound off! I am an elderly person who needed 

some work done around my home. A man just happened to 

come by with a business card and gave me an estimate for his 

services. He charged me in advance for the bid given, and 

came right out to get started. After two hours he said he had to 

leave to go get a part and he has not been seen since. Now 

$1,100 and three weeks later I have not seen him. I tried to call 

the number on the card and it has been disconnected. Buyer 

beware! I had to learn the hard way not to pay someone in 

advance. I am on a fixed income and this has hurt me. Shame 

on you! 

I grow increasingly weary of those who claim the poor pay no 

taxes. They pay sales, property and gasoline taxes, along with 

other taxes. If they can get any kind of job, they pay 7.65 

percent of their salary for Social Security/Medicare. Anything 

the poor pay is substantial considering what they lack.

I live in a very nice neighborhood, most homes average value 

is approximately $245,00 and up. We all in our area take pride 

in the exterior of our homes and our lawns, it looks nice and 

brings value to our area. One of our neighbors two doors down 

maintained their exterior and their landscaping rivaled any 

yard in this area. Sadly, due to a transfer, they sold their home. 

This was two years ago, and what a difference two years can 

make. The family that purchased the home have let it all go, a 

once beautiful site has now become a dumping ground. Dead 

shrubbery, weeds, old broken bikes in the yard and dog dew in 

the backyard that never gets scooped. The smell is 

overwhelming at times. Don’t suggest that the neighbors speak 

to the family, that attempt has already been made. Any ideas? 

I am retired and love my home, but this eyesore is almost too 

much to bear.

As we move into the month 

of April, many homeowners 

and gardeners are staring to 

put their full attention on

Flowers: 

•Most bedding plants,
