“She was 93 years old,” said
Fleet, of Edmond. “When

The Mcalester Buffalo 8th grade cheerleaders need to

A growing trend for older

least a portion of funeral or

else, according to a recent
AARP survey.
B u t p r e - p a y m e n t i s
something everyone should
consider, according to
Brumley. He says that
sitting down with a funeral
director can accomplish
some important goals.
“I think having a price
guarantee through prep
l a n n i n g i s t h e m o s t
important thing. I’ve seen
families save substantial
money,” said Brumley. “It
gives people an opportunity
to establish what type of
service they want while
surviving members of the
family are relieved of
stressful decisions and a
financial burden.”
According to the AARP,
there are 2 million deaths
every year while funeral
costs continue to escalate.
Several consumer advocacy
g r o u p s r e c o m m e n d
planning ahead.
“The average price for
funerals is much higher in
other parts of the country,”
said Brumley. “Our prices
begin at $1,500 for a direct
cremation and go up from
there, depending on a wide
v a r i e t y o f o p t i o n s
available.”
According to Brumley, preneed
contracts typically
cover all funeral home
s e r v i c e c h a r g e s a n d
merchandise. Additional
funds can be paid in for
miscellaneous expenses
such as cemetery charges
and obituary announce-
ments.
Customers have the option
o f m a k i n g m o n t h l y
payments or paying the full
amount up front, for which
t h e r e i s s o m e t i m e s a
discount. The Oklahoma
S t a t e I n s u r a n c e
Commissioner governs all
pre-paid contracts and sets
l i m i t s o n t y p e s o f
investment accounts used.
“Incentive discounts are
available because we are
going to grow that money
for the benefit of the
customer,” said Brumley.
“The funds go into a trust
account in the bank or in a
life insurance policy, and
the family is informed about
that investment. The earlier
you set up a pre-need
account, the more you can
save when the need for our
services arise.”

family. Brumley cautions
against on-line review sites,
particularly those that don’t
require posters to leave a
name. He also pointed out
other important factors to
consider.
“The personalities of the
owner, manager and staff
are important,” he said.
