locked when not in use. Even a bigger surprise came when I realized whenever
a door was accidentally left unlocked, even for a few moments, items
would disappear. I learned to lock the door behind me when I left any office
or room. My ring of keys became a valuable possession and a very big necessity
on the job.
In a Christian’s life, we possess many keys to keep our life pure and holy
in the sight of the Lord. Some of these keys are:
A daily feed on the Word of God. John 5:39, II Timothy 2:15 and Galatians
5:16
A committed prayer life. I Thessalonians 5:17
A filling of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18, Galatians 5:16
A witness for the Lord. Acts 1:8
A cheerful heart. Psalm 95, Colossians 3:23
A joyful attitude in life. Philippians 4:4, Philippians 2:18
A spirit of forgiveness. Philemon, Colossians 3:13
A time of joining with like-minded believers. Hebrews 10:25
I’m sure we could think of many more, but the eight listed above are essential
for a wholesome, happy life in Christ. If even one is neglected, we are
in danger of missing something very valuable in our walk with the Lord.
One day after the janitor filled the pop machine, I accidentally left my
ring of keys inside the machine. The minute I pushed the lock in, I knew my
keys were inside the pop machine and I was powerless in retrieving them. I
finally called the Pepsi company and waited patiently until they could send
someone to unlock the machine and hand me the keys. It was a very senseless
situation because important office keys were on that ring. I was absolutely
powerless to get them back myself.
If we neglect the valuable keys in our Christian walk, we too, will find
ourselves helpless and powerless. We will have to call upon the Lord Jesus
Christ for help. He is always prompt to answer and forgive our negligence.
Praise the Lord and the best thing is that we do not have to wait, as He is
faithful and just to forgive us. He understands and cares about every area of
our lives.
What Cheer Paper Faith and Family
Pastor’s Corner
by Pastor Vince Homan, Delta/What Cheer United Methodist Churches
Advent started this week. It is the first season of the Christian year and
a time Christians have set aside to re-examine their lives in anticipation and
preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Starting with “Black Friday,”
we were off and running with our list of things that must be done before
Christmas. But we can do all the good things on our list and still miss doing
the right thing. It might come as some surprise to some, but Christmas is not
our birthday. The attention shouldn’t be on us at this time of year. And while
we all have expectations for the season, I have been wondering lately what
expectations God might have on us.
If you were to have an honest conversation with God this year, what
might be said? What are God’s expectations of you? What needs to go in
your life this year for you to be free for God’s purposes? What needs to
come? In the story of the Annunciation, Mary is noted as one who is listening,
believing, worshipful, favored, willing, and obedient. I’ve always
thought that God could have chosen any number of young Jewish girls to accomplish
God’s purposes, but Mary prepared herself and made herself available
for God’s purposes. And God chose her. The scripture says she will be
forever blessed because of it. What about us? What should we be doing this
Advent to prepare and make ourselves available to God? What does God expect
of us? Could I challenge you to reconsider your commitment to Christ
and his church this Advent? It is a good place to start. Mary was willing
to hear God’s word and obey it; even if it meant she would be placed in an
awkward, complicated position. In all you have to accomplish this Advent
season, make sure you don’t miss the most important thing. Place yourself
where you can hear God’s word, and be changed by its grace and power. You
just might find yourself in the presence of angels; being used for a purpose
much greater than your own. It is the only way to prepare for Christmas.
Grace and Peace.
Ps. Our churches are making every effort to be God’s love to our communities
this season; especially in the light of the difficult economy. Our
Christmas Store will be open from 9:00 to noon on Saturdays, Dec. 3rd and
10th. All gifts will be $1. We will be taking Christmas Cookies out to the entire
community Sunday, Dec. 4th on our annual “Cookie Walk.” Our “Food
Pantry” is well stocked and ready to serve the community. Our Christmas
Program and Christmas Dinner is Sunday, Dec. 11th starting at 4:30. The
community is welcome to watch the program and share a meal with us. Our
“Tri County Church’s Emergency Fund” is available to unemployed or underemployed
families. We will be out Christmas Caroling in the community
on Dec. 21st. And everyone is invited to our traditional “Christmas Eve
Candlelight Service,” 5:30 at the Delta UMC and 7:00 at the What Cheer
UMC. May God Bless your Christmas Season.
Tales of the Ancient Sportsman
The Thanksgiving holiday is past and now it is full
speed toward Christmas. What a busy time and the high
school athletic schedules hit full speed. But I can’t complain
because I love it.
Compared to a week ago my holiday travel was a
short trip. Thanksgiving day we made our way over to
Lyman and the home of Jeff and Patti Amos. Patti is my
niece and my sister and her family joined us for dinner.
It was a hard day as two places at the table were empty.
Grandpa Rothe passed away in June and Jeff and Patti’s
daughter, Kayleen was killed in an accident in August.
Yet in spite of the sadness, it was good to thank God for
His blessings and share the day with each other.
Late in the afternoon the Ancient-ess and I headed
down highway 71 toward Oklahoma. We got as far as St.
Joe, MO, before turning in for the night. Friday we arrived
at Comanche Loop in Roland, OK where the Little
Cherokee Maiden and the rest of the tribe lives. They
were all fine and excited to see us. I just turned my hearing
aids off and watched the excitement. With five small
children, carpets are not a real good idea. So with hardwood
floors and no carpets, the house operates at a very
high decibel level. There was a report of an earthquake
in Oklahoma last week and I think I know where it might
have been centered.
With satellite radio, I was able to listen to the Iowa-
Nebraska game on the way down. I’m sure glad I didn’t
have to watch it. I sounded like another Ken O’Keefe offensive
masterpiece. It is no wonder that teams shut the
Hawks down. They quickly learn that they only have to
stop two guys and the Hawks are helpless.
Saturday was an interesting day for me. The Ancientess
along with Rick, Lavonda and all the kids went to
a movie over in Fort Smith. I was watching the Ohio
State-Michigan game and then I was going to go over to
Sallisaw to play golf. Rick told me to put the dog Izzy in
the kennel cage before I left. That should be no problem
as the dog is a small spaniel type dog.
But that dog doesn’t like me and I told Rick that I
probably couldn’t catch her. Rick said to just throw
some dog treats into the cage and she would go right in.
Wrong! She would have no part of that.
My next move was to sit and think a while. Meanwhile
Izzy jumped up on the couch and went to sleep. I
thought I would just pick her up and take her to the cage.
When I grabbed her you would have thought I had hold
of the Tazmainian Devil. She viciously chomped on my
hand and wrist leaving a bloody mess of ten puncture
holes.
Forget the golf, my grip hand was a mess and being
on blood thinner presented another problem. It took the
better share of the next three hours to get the bleeding
under control. It looks ugly now, but it appears that infection
will not be a problem. I will keep an eye on it.
I plan to play golf Monday afternoon, but that may not
work.
I did get to cover a couple of games last week and
it was sure good to cover high school activities again.
Monday night I went up to Monroe for the Pella Christian
girl’s game with PCM. The girls union had ranked
PC as the No. 7 team in Class 2-A, and the Mustangs
were not impressed. PCM used an all underclass lineup
lead by a very talented freshman, Courtney Van Houweling,
to knock off the Eagles 56-55.
Tuesday night I made my way over to Sigourney to
watch the No. 1 ranked North Mahaska girls take on the
Lady Savages. A No. 1 ranking puts a huge target on the
backs of the Warhawks, but someone has to do it.
The Warhawks bolted out of the chute and quickly
turned the game into a track meet. If a team is to play
North Mahaska, they had better get their track shoes on
because this team loves to run. And NM is a balanced
team as they all run and they all can score. The fast break
was sizzling as they torched the Lady Savages 76-25.
I was able to meet Michael Zogg, the regional sports
editor for this paper at the game. This young man is doing
an outstanding job of covering the area schools and I
for one am very impressed with his work.
It is time once more to take a look at our yesterdays.
What to be
Thankful For
by Tylyn Decker
THORNBURG - In recent times,
most people are thankful for having
wifi on their phones or the magical
ability to completely ignore every
single word a teacher says during a
class period. Along with teachers,
some even more important things
are ignored, like being thankful that
our parents even let us out of our
house, or that our chores are limited
to only a few grueling hours, rather
than a lifetime of torture. So, this
holiday season, make sure to tell
the people that you care about that
you’re actually thankful that they’ve
Crazy About Eggs
Trivia of the
Week
by Tylyn Decker
THORNBURG - So, we all know
that ridiculous scene at the end of
Titanic where Rose is laying on a
door and Jack is clinging helplessly
to the edge of it while they both float
around aimlessly in a glacier filled
ocean. And then, when Jack finally
falls to his watery grave and Rose
finds a whistle on a dead man, we
think to ourselves, well, if Jack was
part porcupine, he wouldn’t have
sunk! Well, not everyone thinks
that, but you would if you know that
porcupines could float due to their
quills being hollow.
by Shelly Andre
THORNBURG - Jennifer Loudermilk, “The Egg Lady”, came to our school
to give our students “egg-ucational” programs about eggs. Jennifer works
for the Iowa Egg Council and travels around to educate people about eggs.
She presents many age appropriate programs to from Pre-k to Adult. The
kindergarden, first, and second grades learned about Parts of an Egg. Third
and fourth grades found out about the process eggs go through from the
Hen to the Home. Fifth and sixth grades saw a Melodrama dealing with
Nutrition. Seventh and eighth grades heard Questions and Answers about
the Egg Industry. The high school FCS students had General food prep. and
Advanced food prep. And the best thing about the visit was that Jennifer
prepared something for everyone to try from recipes she left for the students
to take home. It was an “egg-cellent” program and we hope Jennifer can
come again.
Veteran’s Day Essay
by Dillon Ehret
My grandpa served in World War II and had a lot of friends that died in
that war. He tells me a lot of stories and I think I learn more from him than a
movie or a book. I feel like he has experienced something big, seeing people
dying in front of him. I think if you have a veteran you should respect them
and notice what they went through. A veteran to me I think is someone who
served for the military. A veteran is also someone who served and got our
rights in 1776. You should respect veterans because they got your rights of
freedom. Some countries do not have that, so be respectful and if you want
to learn more, you can ask your veteran. You can serve in the war and be a
veteran, if you want to do that you have to go through training. Also if you
want to be one treat a veteran how you want to be treated, and realize what a
veteran goes through, watching friends die before your eyes, knowing what
might happen to you, knowing that you might not see your family for a long,
long time. A veteran also respects the flag. You need to learn that a veteran
does a lot and some people do not realize that. They go through tough times
and they might be mad at times and know that they might not come back.
Being in a war when you have a kid might be really hard on you your wife
and your kid. You might not have a veteran in your family but you can still
respect them a ndthank them for all they have done for you. They might not
have come back, they might have, either way, they are veterans who have
earned us rights.
The Importance of Veteran’s Day
by Myrissa Garber
The importance of Veteran’s Day to me is honoring all the Veterans and
troops out there serving our country and fighting for our freedom. They are
out there risking their lives for us and that’s very courageous.
Serving our country is no easy task. The harsh weather, the fear of the
unknown, and watching their fellow soldiers die and get wounded has to be
difficult. To add to that stress, they are also separated from their families.
Being so far away from those you love cannot be easy.
Veteran’s Day is also a great time to thank the soldiers’ families, because
they also have a lot to deal with. These people also need our love and support
to get through the days, weeks and months that their loved ones are so far
away.
So many times we take for granted the freedoms, rights, and peace our
veteran’s have given us and will continue to give us. We all need to take a
moment of our busy lives, not only on Veteran’s Day, but every day to thank
those who have done so much for us.
Why I’m Glad to Be an American
By Miranda Little
I am glad to be an American because in America we are free to do what we
want. We can pick our own job and choose what we sell. In other countries
the government tells you what you sell, how much you sell and when to
sell, and also who to sell it to. I’m also glad cause the soldiers in Iran, Iraq,
and Afghanistan fight for us. America has good schools and good teachers.
My dad has a friend that used to ride fourwheelers with us that fought in
Afghanistan. I feel bad for people in Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan who fight
and risk their lives for the people in America. Soldiers are so brave.
