Boyer-Truly
a Star
By Chapter Reporters: Emma
Haslehuhn & Blaire Moore
The Agri-Power FFA
Chapter attended the 85th
Annual FFA State Leadership
Conference at Iowa
State University in Ames,
Iowa on April 21-23. The
Chapter had many outstanding
members attend
the conference, but one
stood out from them all.
Harlie Boyer, the
daughter of Todd and
Jonita Boyer, is a senior at Eddyvile-Blakesburg-Fremont High School. Boyer is an excellent student in the classroom
and is involved in many activities here at EBF, one of which being FFA. While being a star in the classroom,
she is also a star in agriculture. Boyer knew a few months ago that she had placed first in the proficiency of
Small Animal Production and Care Entrepreneurship. This is an outstanding accomplishment and is not easy to
obtain. Boyer kept records of her small animal business of breeding and selling Australian Shepherd puppies.
Over the years, all of her hard work has paid off, as she was named the State Champion in that area. She has sold
over 60 head of puppies to people throughout Iowa, the Midwest, and even as far away as Colorado.
Boyer was also selected along with five others as a “Star Over Iowa” candidate in the area of Agribusiness.
Boyer went through a series of interviews to be asked about her Supervised Agricultural Project by numerous
judges. At one of the sessions, Boyer, along with her parents Jonita and Todd Boyer, her Ag Advisor Mr. Patrick
Powers, and School Principal Matt Johnson, all accompanied Boyer on stage to accept her Star in Agribusiness
award.
Boyer was ecstatic during this conference. She was on the big stage a total of three times. Some kids go
through FFA in four years and never have the opportunity to step into the spotlight. “Being on stage was a tremendous
experience for me - and my family. I am so proud of what I have done, and I look forward to being able to do
more things in agriculture after I graduate,” said Boyer.
Her FFA Advisor, Patrick Powers, was pleased to be back on the stage himself. The last time was in 2000 with
Scott Sandeen. “I am extremely proud of Harlie. She has grown into an amazing young woman with a good head
on her shoulders, and I know that she will succeed wherever she goes,” said FFA Advisor Mr. Patrick Powers.
EBF Principal Matt Johnson had a new experience in his young career. He attended the 85th State FFA Leadership
Conference as well. Johnson enjoyed his brief time at the conference by being present on stage during the
Star presentation. “It was the first time I have ever attended the State FFA convention or any other Ag related
event. It was great to see young people doing great things, and it was a very enjoyable experience.”
Boyer’s hours of record keeping and working with her business have also influenced her future plans. In the
fall, Boyer plans to attend Northwest Missouri State University to major in Ag Business.
On May 31st at 1:00 we will be
hosting a meet and greet for
Kurt Allison at our
high school. Kurt is
the lead guitar player
for Jason Aldean. He
will be in town for the
Music Fest that is being held at the
Drag Strip on June 1st to raise
money to make improvements to the
city park area. Feel free to share
this information with other people
from our community.
Kurt will be here to talk to our
students about the music industry.
It should be fun!
Adults can come too!
Just Kidding
Submitted by Joellen Breon
Just Kidding by Trudy
Ludwig is just one of the
recent books out on bullying.
Authors and publishers
have reacted to the need that
educators have expressed
regarding the lack of quality
books on bullying.
At Fremont Elementary,
Ms. Breon has read the book
to Kindergarten through
Sixth Grade classrooms.
Students also participated in
discussions regarding the
importance of thinking
about the words we use.
Another one of the key
components of the book is
differentiating between tattling
and reporting. A tattle
is when you are trying to get
someone in trouble. Reporting
is when you are trying to help someone in trouble. This will help students and adults when dealing with situations.
Mr. Fenster will be working with students at Blakesburg and Eddyville using the same book. The Eddyville-Blakesburg-
Fremont Community School District will be implementing the Positive Behavior Intervention Support Framework. This
framework will provide clear expectations, learning opportunities, and a structured consequence system for all students.

A Few Words
from Mike Duff:
Mike and Martha Duff are
very familiar faces in the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont
School District; Mike is the
high school custodian and was
hired in 2005, and Martha is in
the kitchen at Eddyville Elementary
and has been with the
district since 2004. Over the
course of the last several
weeks, they have seen some very difficult times, as Mike
has been facing treatments for cancer in this voicebox.
Mike shared his story: Last year, gray matter was
found on his vocal cords which they removed, and it turned
out to be benign. A check-up this year revealed it had
grown back, and they needed to go further into his voicebox
area; the tests revealed it was now malignant. Mike is
undergoing seven weeks of chemotherapy and radiation.
He states that every Monday is an especially long day
as he has both treatments done, while every other day he
only has radiation. As of May 7, he was on his third week,
and the doctors have been very impressed at how well he
has been doing. He was also cautioned that the remainder
of the treatments would be a lot worse with the onset of
side effects.
The paperwork has been overwhelming to get everything
in place to make ends meet, but Mike says, “The good
Lord has been looking out for us and not forget all the people
who have been praying for us also.” Mike would like to
thank everyone for the cards and flowers that have been
sent to him and Martha.
Mike has many supporters out there as he continues his
recovery.
Local Student on Winning Team
2013 marked another incredible year for student game projects, as the steep competition at the
DigiPen Game Awards proved. DigiPen Institute of Technology is located in Redmond WA.
The team behind the excellent time-shifting puzzle game Chromo Disfanglement received the coveted
Claude Comair Game of the Year Award and $3,000 in prize money. Chrono Disfunglement was a
senior project initially developed by a team of five students from DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore.
They later added four student members from the Redmond campus.
Two junior game projects — the multiplayer vehicle combat game, Rekkage, and 3D stealth action
game Exitus -- tied for second and third place in the overall best game category, each splitting $1,500
in prize money.
The DigiPen Game Awards are held every April to recognize the best student games as decided by
DigiPen’s student body. The awards include a wide range of categories across all grade levels, with
several awards split between game projects that use either a custom-made or pre-built game engine.
Eddyville-Blakesburg 2010 graduate David Fenton, a junior this year at DigiPen, is a member of
the Exitus team. David programmed an original graphics engine for Exitus. His team has 17 members,
which includes programmers, artists, and game designers. Exitus also received awards for best original
music and best character.
STEM Grants Awarded
Joellen Harding-Breon in conjunction with Jessica Nollen, Tony
Kurimski, Nancy Lane, and Stacey Manternach wrote four Science
Technology Engineering and Mathematics grants. The
grants will be used for science materials that align with the Next
Generation Science Standards. The new kits will provide students
with opportunities to explore science with a hands-on approach.
The kits will also provide a clear curriculum with resources
for the teachers.
Ms. Harding-Breon hopes to write additional grants with other
grade-levels during the 2013-2014 school year. The grants do require
community participation. If you are an engineer or a chemist
and you would like to volunteer please call Ms. Harding-Breon
at 933-4211.
EBFHS Concert Band places 1 st
at Worlds of Fun Contest
On Sunday April 28 th , The Eddyville
Blakesburg Fremont Concert Band competed
in the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music in
Kansas City, Missouri. The EBFHS Band
placed 1 st in class 2A competition. The band
also earned a Division I rating for the first
time in EBF Band history at this prestigious
contest. There are 70 students in the concert
band this year and they are directed by Joe
Overton. Bands from 7 different states compete
in this festival. The judges are nationally
renowned college band directors and composers.
This year, the band had the privilege of
performing Flight of Valor for the composer
of the piece James Swearingen. Flight of Valor
was respectfully dedicated to the heroes of
United Flight 93 who tragically lost their lives in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001. Swearingen is one of Barnhouse
Music’s top composers. This is the 3rd time that the EBFHS Concert Band has placed 1 st at this competition.
E.B.F.H.S. BAND EARNS DIVISION I RATING AT STATE
On Saturday, May 4 th , the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Concert Band
earned a division I rating at State Large Group Contest at Mid-Prairie High
School in Wellman. The EBFHS Chorus also had an excellent performance
earning a Division II rating. Bands and choirs at the contest were evaluated
in several categories by a panel of three judges. The music groups were
rated on their performances using a scale of 1 through 5. A I rating indicates
a superior performance. This is the 19 th year in a row that the
E.B.F.H.S Concert Band has earned a division I rating. The EBFHS Band is
directed by Joe Overton and the EBFHS Choir is directed by Chris Ellerston.
Recently several Eddyville-Blakesburg-
Fremont students attended "Fame". 24 students
from the high school Rocket Chorale
and Thespian/Drama Club (below) attended
this event with other local schools at
Indian Hills Community College as a free
event performed by the college students.
JUNIOR HIGH BAND DIRECTOR TAKES ON GORUCK CHALLENGE!
Since its start in September 2010, 400 GORUCK challenges have taken place all
over the world. The majority of participants are men, with women making up just 20
percent of competitors. The challenge is led by a “cadre” (basically a team leader
with actual special operations background) and is a nightlong venture with 30 or so
other people around the host city. Participants are given problems and missions to
solve, like getting to specific city landmarks in a certain amount of time…while holding
a tree log. Everyone is wearing a backpack full of bricks. (If you weigh less than
150 lbs, you take four bricks, over 150 lbs, six bricks.) Throw in a mix of push-ups,
bear crawls, carrying giant logs, and wading through freezing rivers, and you have
yourself a GORUCK challenge.
Participants range from military vets to those who are simply curious about the
adventure. (Seventy percent of participants have no military background.) And while
some sign up because they are interested in joining the military, a majority take part
simply to push themselves in a way they haven’t before. Challenge “Cadre” build
each class into a team through collective conditions of mental and physical exhaustion.
Classes are small, camaraderie is high, smiles are plentiful, and teamwork is
paramount.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT
The goal of completing a GORUCK challenge goes far beyond the 12 hours of
marching, calisthenics, and problem solving missions. The experience is designed to
push people, help them surpass perceived limitations, and apply what they’ve endured
to other areas of life: from relationships with family and friends, to work, to
any other life-goals. “The challenge is only 12 hours, but the way it can change the
rest of your life, big or small, is what matters,” said Sophie Pollitt-Cohen, GORUCK’s
director. Need even more positive reassurance? For the team at GORUCK, the challenges
are never about what you do, but rather to show you what you do.
Ms. Russell used this opportunity to not only challenge herself, but to challenge
her students as well. “After returning from Christmas break, I informed my junior
high band students I would be doing this challenge, and that it was the first goal of
the year I had set for myself. They told me I was crazy! I defended my decision and
explained that with hard work, help from friends, and some determination anything
is possible. I then handed them index cards and told them each to write down one (1)
goal they wanted to accomplish in my class this semester. Not only was this a way to hold myself accountable for the goal I set for myself, it held them (the students) accountable
for achieving their goal as well. Before lessons, we would look at their goals, and we worked on them together. At the end of the month of April, 42 of our 56 band students will
have reached their goal. It really is amazing. Now they have their own sense of accomplishment.”
In the final high school concert of the year, Mr. Ellerston directs his choir (at left),
Miss Damisch - student teacher who received a standing ovation (below ) directs the band,
and above all the seniors pose with High school Band Director Mr. Overton.

The 2013-2014
Agri-Power FFA Officer team
enjoys a break during camp.
Out With The Old And In With The New!
By Chapter Reports: Emma Haselhuhn and Blaire Moore
It’s official! You know spring is upon us when we have had the annual FFA banquet.
A very important part of our banquet is the induction of the new officer team
for the next year. This year our officer team goes as follows; President Tucker
Black, Vice President Katie Larkin, Secretary Rachel Maloy, Treasurer Paige Shafer,
Reporters Emma Haselhuhn and Blaire Moore, and Sentinel Zach Harris. The
Agri-Power FFA chapter likes to be up to date and keep up with the fast moving
technology advancements – so to accommodate these modern problems, we have
made a new addition to the officer team, Chapter Web Site. This office is held by
Taylor Jones. Every year after the new officer team is elected they sit down and
discuss the next years activities also called POA (Program of Activities)
Friday April 5, 2013, this new group of officers and the renowned Ag Advisor
Dr. Patrick Powers sat down and discussed the next year’s activities. This is a necessary
meeting because it is where all the planning and organization for the coming
year’s activities are done. They also discuss new ideas to add to the POA and share
thoughts to improve upon the current schedule of activities. The officers had many
ideas about ways they could improve upon events. Also they suggested some
events that we could add to the already long list of activities.
Everyone had input on ways to make our chapter even better than it already is.
“I believe we have a solid officer team this year, and we shall get a lot accomplished,”
said new chapter President Tucker Black.
It was a long and mind racking evening, but it was made a little better when Mr.
Powers bought us Pizza!!! We finished discussing and felt confident that this com-
ing year will be yet again another successful one. With the new additions we are hoping to make to our POA, and to the already existing events, things should run rather smoothly.
“These kids seem to know what they want to see transpire this year in the chapter. They are innovative, creative, and open for any new ideas as they come,” said Ag Advisor
Patrick Powers.
With such a sturdy group of young people behind the wheel, we are setting ourselves up for a sensational year in FFA.
Recently all three elementary
schools started learning archery
skills. Our P.E. teachers
are trained NASP (National
Archery in the Schools) Coaches.
This carries over to our EBF
Rocket Archery team and qualifies
4-6 th graders to join our
team in the fall. Below are a
few guidelines to consider if
your student is super excited and is really enjoying this archery unit. The season typically
lasts from November to the end of February and involves the expense of the bow,
arrows, a case, a team shirt and a fee. This may seem like a lot of money but the kids use
Went the Distance!!!!!!!
Go The Distance Day!
Fremont Elementary participated on Friday, May 3rd along
with the entire state as part of Live Healthy Iowa Kids.
Physical Education teacher Kathleen Rempe had planned to do
the walk outside, but, due to the rain, decided to try the 1/4 course
that she mapped out inside.
She states, “It was fabulous. The entire school lined up outside
their rooms in the hall, and we all played follow the leader for a
one mile walk. The halls and gym were filled with "get-up-andgo"
music. We finished up in the gym for a little pep talk from
Miss Breon about being healthy and staying active. Preschool
through 6th grade all participated, plus staff, it was a great
experience!!”
