Community Welcomes
Gonzales As New Shared Superintendent
Shared Superintendent
Benita Gonzales
By SNR Editor, Robin Handy
It was our communities’ warmth
and friendliness which pulled this
Iowa-raised lady from the banks
of the great Mississippi. Benita
Gonzales began her duties as the
60/40 shared superintendent of
Sigourney and Tri-County school
districts on Friday, July 1 and both
boards along with four community
advisory groups wish her the best as
well as encourage residents to callon
her for a visit.
Sigourney School Board
President Bill Rees said, “Benita is
really excited about her new position
and I am looking forward to
working with her.”
“I’m excited about the start of
the new school year with our new
Superintendent Benita Gonzales,”
said Tri-County School Board
President Kelly Tish. “The hiring
process went very well. I would like
to give the TC and Sigourney school
boards a pat on the back as well as
everyone who was involved in the
hiring process. Our schools are a
very important part of our communities.”
Amy Halleran, a community
member in one of the four advisory
groups said, “I am very excited to
have Benita join the Sigourney and
Tri County School Districts as our
new leader. I think her enthusiasm,
work ethic and high expectations
will help us reach the next level of
excellence in our districts. Benita
and her husband, Tom will be an
excellent addition to our community
and I look forward to everyone getting
to know them, and watching
our school districts thrive under her
leadership.”
“When I learned of this opening,
Tom and I decided it was time for a
little road trip,” said Gonzales. “We
bought a cup of coffee and Tom’s
standard - Diet Dr. Pepper, picked
up the local newspapers, talked with
people and just spent some time in
both communities. We were very
pleased and hoped this would be an
opportunity which would open up
for us.”
Even though Gonzales has
worked in larger schools: Davenport
North (4 years), Davenport Central
(16 years) and Fort Madison, her
heart belongs to the smaller rural
community; when asked about the
draw to our two rural districts, she
said, “There were a variety of reasons
including - when my children
were young, I purposely took my
family to live in smaller communities.
Even when I worked in the
Quad Cities, we lived in a smaller
community because I grew in
Camanche (see map below) and
wanted the same types of things for
my children.”
“I’m very excited to be
here!” Benita Gonzales.
Benita Gonzales was transplanted
to Camanche as a young teenager,
she finished her high school career
in a small rural community before
pursuing her secondary education at
the University of Dubuque with an
education degree. “My first job was
as a middle school physical education
teacher and coach at Lewis
Central Middle School in Council
Bluffs,” Gonzales said with a smile.
“I coached everything for five years,
even boys track. My first paycheck
was roughly $9,800, but all of the
coaching has been very valuable to
me.”
Gonzales returned to her hometown
area, married and began working
in the Davenport School District
for a total of 20 years, including
2 years teaching At-Risk students.
During her tenure, she completed her
PreK-12 Principalship and Special
Education Supervisor endorsement
at the University of Northern Iowa,
Cedar Falls. From there, she relocated
just down river to the Fort
Madison School District; she served
as their high school and alternative
program principal. While at
Fort Madison, Gonzales worked to
achieve her endorsement for superintendent,
again from UNI.
“I’m extremely excited about
the opportunity which has been provided
here,” said Gonzales. “What
I’ve seen here thus far, the things
The City of Camanche in Clinton County is roughly 2.5 hours
northwest from Keokuk County with a 2000 census population
of 4,215. It is considered a bedroom community to Clinton and
boarders the Mississippi River on the east.
Sigourney and Tri-County are providing
for students - the advanced
progressive tools and opportunities
to build and strengthen education
opportunities combined with small
town life...it’s a great package!”
This is Gonzales’ first superintendent
position and when asked
about just how daunting the prospect
was - she smiled and said, “Just
coming into a new job, no matter
the dynamics, there is an adjustment
but I won’t know any other way. I’m
just going to go ahead and fill up
my schedule - this will be my life,
but I’m good with it.” The schedule
Gonzales is planning includes
Monday, Wednesday and Friday in
the Sigourney district; Tuesday and
Thursday in the Tri-County district.
“It’s huge, really it is but I’m
used to taking things on. I’m not
fearful of it; I’m really excited about
the challenge of this new opportunity,”
added Gonzales.
While in Fort Madison, she
saw student achievements soar as a
direct result of concentrated deliberate
interventions among struggling
students. “We decreased the number
of “F’s” students received by an
average of 50% across the board and
had a 13% increase in 11th grade
proficiency.” Gonzales did note the
district is looking for ways to balance
the interventions to support
both ITEDS and classroom work.
In the Sigourney and Tri-County
districts and given the programs
already in place, Gonzales is hoping
that if there are any achievement
plateaus, the administration together
with the students can keep going
forward to achieve high and higher.
“Because ultimately, we want all
of our kids to achieve. As far as
I’m concerned, we want every single
student to be successful,” said
Gonzales. “It’s about taking a look
and seeing how much better we can
become.”
“It’s for the kids!”
Benita Gonzales.
Gonzales was pleasantly surprised at
how progressive both districts were
with regards to technology. “This is
good stuff - it really is,” she said.
“Coming from Fort Madison and
Davenport, this is not seen there
and I believe both of these districts
would love to have something like
this occur. Combining conscientious
high quality teachers and these progressive
tools are an innovative way
to provide for our kids. You don’t
want them walking into our building
and going back in time; when
they walk out, they are on their
phones and mobile devices, they are
going home to computers and talking
to people on the other side of
the world and yet if we try to keep
them in the 20th century or teach
them that way, we aren’t going to
ultimately prepare them for what
exists out in the real world. I think
it’s a wonderful opportunity we are
providing our kids.”
Gonzales wants to meet a wide
variety of people and listen in an
effort to get a better picture of the
needs in both districts, “I’m eager
to open dialogue and continue to
move forward. I just feel so good
about being here and being a part
of a friendly environment. Working
together to make things better is the
direction I feel is necessary. I welcome
concerns, but bring solutions
- be creative.”
Does anyone else think there is an abundance of frogs and toads this
year? I see lots of tiny ones where I live. Tree frogs like to hang out by my
front door. One evening a tree frog appeared in my kitchen. It must have
slipped in when someone opened the front door. I don’t mind frogs, but I
don’t want them in my house!
Wes Henry celebrated his birthday last week on July 7 and Noah Robertson
celebrated his birthday on July 11.
Last Friday evening Andrea and I attended the Mahaska County Relay
for Life in Oskaloosa. Our evening started with a delicious supper of ham,
baked beans, cole slaw, rolls, and cupcakes at the Central United Methodist
Church. After supper everyone proceeded to the downtown square for the
start of the relay. After the opening ceremony, the survivor’s lap and group
photo were taken. It was a hot evening, but there are lots of nice shade trees
on the square to sit under.
The Corbin kids, Cassie, Kaylene, and Cole, were busy at Deep River
Fun Days this past weekend. Friday evening they helped with the supper
served by their 4-H club, the Deep River Helping Hands. On Saturday their
club had a float in the parade. They also helped in the concession stand on
Saturday.
A birthday party was held last Sunday for Dorothy Allen at the Legion
Hall. The party was hosted by her children. There were many people there
to share some good food and to help Dorothy celebrate.
The Corbin family attended Dorothy Allen’s birthday party on Sunday.
Sunday afternoon Andrea and I helped at clean-up day at the Keokuk
County Expo in Sigourney. The Expo starts on July 12.
Remember that the recycle bin comes to town on July 13 and will be
here for a week.
The July fire department meeting will be held on the 14th at 7:00 p.m.
at the fire station. Monthly training will be held on July 21 at 7:00 p.m. at
the fire station.
The next figure 8 race in Barnes City will be held on Friday, July 22 at
7:00 p.m. at the Betterment Club track. Mark your calendars.
Have a good week!
Community Blood Drive
There is a Blood Drive in the Thomas Memorial Hall at the Keokuk
County Fairgrounds, Wednesday, July 20 from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. Call 1-800-
452-1097 to schedule an appointment. Donors who last gave blood on or
before May 25 are eligible.
Blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that only takes about
an hour to complete. Donors must be at least 16 years old, be in good health
and weigh at least 110 pounds. A Blood Donor card or other photo I.D. is required
to donate. 16-year old donors must present a signed parental consent
form each time they donate until reaching 17 years of age. Consent forms
are available from Blood Center offices. Controlled high blood pressure and
diabetics are acceptable.
Local Blood Drive Results
Recently the Southeast
Iowa Blood Center Mobile drew
many units of blood at two Blood
Drives on June 28th in Keokuk
County. They drew 12 units of blood
at the N. Keokuk County Fire Department
in South English that was
sponsored by the South English
First Responders and 25 units of
blood at the Keokuk County Health
Center in Sigourney.
You can donate blood every
eight weeks. One pint of blood can
help save the lives of up to three patients. One out of every five people
entering the hospital will need blood products.
Ponderings
of the Heart
By: Jane Green Larson
Have you ever been in a group of people in which seem to talk a different
language than you do? Oh, they are using English, but you simply cannot
understand what they are talking about. Frequently with the older children,
not quite teenagers yet, I have found that they are very computer savvy and
I feel utterly foreign when I listen to their speech. Often when I experience
problems on my own computer, I find myself not able to follow the instructions
on how to fix it simply because I do not understand the terminology. I
feel very peculiar.
I looked up the word “peculiar” in my Webster’s Dictionary. Here is what
it says the word “peculiar” means: as an adjective (1) One person, thing,
group, country, etc., distinctive; exclusive (2) particular; unique, special (3)
out of the ordinary; odd; strange. It also says, as a noun (1) something belonging
to one only, as a privilege.
Do you know the Bible says that Christ’s followers will also be foreign
and peculiar in this world? In the Old Testament in Exodus 19:5, the Lord
tells his people, “If you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant,
then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth
is mine.” Further in Deuteronomy 14:2, “For thou art a holy people unto the
Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto
himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.”
He also calls his followers peculiar in the New Testament. The Apostle
Paul tells us in Titus 2:14 that Christ “gave himself for us, that he might redeem
us from all inequity and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous
of good works.” And lastly, in the book of First Peter 2:9, the Apostle Peter
tells Christ’s followers, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of
him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light; which in
time past were not a people, but are now the people of God; which had not
obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”
It is a wonderful thing to be found and to be called peculiar in this world,
because as Peter said, we are made peculiar so that we might praise God. The
reason we can praise him is because we have been taken out of the darkness
of sin into his marvelous light. I am glad to be called a peculiar person today!
This was a fun week for Deep River, getting everything ready to go for
Fun Days. They had a little of everything going on.
Steve Rauch and C.J. rode their 4-wheelers down Friday evening to visit
Kenny and I. Angie Steve’s wife, was up town. They stayed with Lois and
Leland Winegarden. Steve’s father-in-law brought his tractor Saturday for
the tractor pull. They did well with it. Jackie McDermott fixed them a nice
meal. They left their dog with Bobby.
Trudy Smith and the kids came and enjoyed the fun too. She is just getting
finalized with her case of the drug store giving the wrong prescription.
My granddaughter, Amy Fontinel and her kids from Victor came and the kids
had a fun time too.
Casey Pierce and Bob Rauch did well in the tractor pull. Casey and Bob
had spent the week getting ready for it.
Bob has been visiting Chris Moode, who is very ill. Chris and he used to
work together, so he likes it when Bob visits him.
Jackie McDermott visited Kenny and I Sunday and brought some good
potato salad and pork loin she fixed on the grill. She went to work afterwards.
Eddie Evans is home visiting his mother, Lois Evans. He came to church
and said she is having a time with her meds and not feeling too well.
Merry lee Sindt, Dr. Phillips’ daughter, visited Friday. She went to Ronnie’s
shop and took pictures and took some banana bread.
The United Church stand did very well at the Deep River Fun Days.
Greg Cranston and family from Missouri came to church and his grand
aunt played her violin. She plays very well. She also played with Ellen who
plays the piano for church. Ellen Zimmerman’s daughter, Carey and her two
kids, came to church too.
Gert Rieck is back at the North English Nursing Home recuperating after
being in the hospital with a broken hip.
Jim and Donna Fisk and family went to the Montezuma Park for a cousin’s
reunion. They had a nice time.
Janet and Kenny and friends went to some good yard sales in Grinnell
this week. One only accepted free will donations that went to a good cause.
Sunday Shelby Kurk stopped on her way home from Amy’s and visited
Kenny and I. She’d been helping her grand kids with their fish tank.
Leland and Lois Winegarden returned from Greeley, Colorado on Monday
of last week. They spent time with Richard and Bev Schrader and Herb
and Ann Schrader. They visited a missile silo site and a miniature railroad
museum and a trip to Loveland for their vacation sites.
Wednesday and Thursday Jaidyn and McKenna Rugg spent time with
Grandpa and Grandma while their parents attended a funeral in Rochester,
Minn. Chase Widmer spent Thursday and Friday with them.
Angie Widmer joined them for a trip to the Brooklyn Race track to watch
Myron Widmer and Ben Pierce with their two-man cruiser.
Saturday night Leland and Lois Winegarden went to the rodeo in Bloomfield.
Several family members were in the performance. On the 4th they visited
with Jim and Jeanette Winegarden at North Liberty.
Shake It Up Cafe at What Cheer UMC VBS
Submitted by The What Cheer UM Christian Education Committee
The What Cheer United Methodist Church hosted, “Shake It Up Cafe, Vacation Bible School from June
16 - 19. We averaged about two dozen kids this year, along with many helpers and leaders. Thursday
our lesson was “Be Ready for God!” The kids made Chef’s aprons, played games outside and learned
four new songs for Sunday’s church service. They got hot outside so the teens decided to have water
balloons on Friday and Saturday. Friday our lesson was “Give Happily to God.” THe craft for the day was
a “Give Happy Bank” that they decorated. Saturday the lesson was “Celebrate God Forever!” They all
made “Blessing Cookies” (looked like fortune cookies) to share. Sunday morning kicked off with a special
Vacation Bible School Brunch, that all the church enjoyed. The kids sang their songs in church, Meg
Denny shared about the lessons the kids learned, and we recognized all our volunteers. Then Pastor
Vince shared a special sermon for Fathers on Father’s Day. So sorry, we didn’t save any of the brunch
for Vince. Many thanks to the kids (and parents) who participated in VBS, our teachers, people who ran
the sound, people who contributed, made treats, prayed or supported us in any way. You really showed
us how to “Shake It Up!”
Tales of the Ancient Sportsman
Wow! What a weekend. I have been known to try and
cram too much into a short period of time and this time
I think I reached my limit. I am totally shucked after this
adventure and I need some down time. I think I have the
answer for that. My three months is up Thursday and
now I will be able to swing a golf club again. I think that
could be good medicine.
Back to the weekend. Friday night the twin grandsons
had a Little league tourney game in Bloomfield at
8:00 pm. I was to attend a family reunion in Nevada,
MO Saturday at noon, so the plan was to go to the game
and then drive down into Missouri before turning in for
the night.
The game was one of those ridiculous games filled
with walks, errors and most anything that would slow the
game down. Chris and Alec’s team got down 10-4 after
four innings and then they rallied will 11 runs in the final
two innings to take a 15-10 win. It was past 10:00pm
when the game finished so we just stayed in a motel in
Bloomfield and left early the next morning.
We were on the road before 7:00 am and made it to
Nevada shortly before noon. It was an uneventful trip
and the Missouri River in Kansas City was not high
enough to close the casino. In fact, I have seen it much
higher.
The Henson/Hensley reunion is always held in the
heat of the Missouri summer and it was a scorcher in
Nevada. The 3M Clubhouse where we hold the reunion
was very cool and comfortable. It is always a good time
with friends and family that we may only see once a year
or less.
The reunion broke up about 2:30 pm and we were on
our way to the Soldier’s Reunion in Griswold IA. There
were several class reunions and several of my friends
from the Class of 56 were there. Even though they were
a couple of years older, I still spent a lot of time with
them during high school days. It was so good to just mill
around in the city park and try and figure out the identity
of several folks.
We spent the night at my sister’s place and went to
church with her in the morning. Again I was able to see
many old friends. After lunch and a quick cat-nap I was
on my way home. As we approached Des Moines the
Ancient-ess uttered those fearful words. She needed to
stop at Hobby Lobby. I cut a deal with her and stopped
at Michael’s as it is just off of I-235. I put her on a time
limit and she actually beat the limit. And best of all, she
found what she needed.
I did get in a couple of ball games this week. Wednesday
night I covered the North Mahaska girls in their
tourney opener. After a slow start, they broke the game
open and ripped English Valleys 13-1. McKenzie Mitchell
and Tara Smith each had long home runs for NM. I
see that the Warhawks escaped Pekin Friday night by a
10-9 score and they now face Danville Monday at Pekin.
They are on track for a rematch with Lynnville-Sully in
the Regional final.
Thursday night I covered the Osky girls against a
Norwalk team that had beaten the Indians 10-0 earlier
in the year. This time Oskaloosa turned the tables with
a 5-2 win.
It is All Star break for the Major Leagues and I must
remind folks that the Cardinals are in first place. I’m not
sure how, but we will take it. And I clearly understand
that there is a second half of the season yet to play.
The Flubs are struggling big time and I look for some
big shakeups in that organization. But Cub fans are ever
loyal. There was an incident on our Montana trip that
gave me a handle on Cub fans. We were at the Little
Big Horn Battlefield and that day just happened to be the
135th anniversary of the battle. There was a huge crowd
there and I would guess that 80 percent or more were
American Indians and they were having a great time. My
point is that the American Indian, like the Cub fan will
celebrate any victory no matter how long ago it was.
Another highlight of our tour was a visit to the Birch
Creek Hutterite Colony near Valier, MT. I had visited the
colony myself and had lined up a visit and a lunch there
for our group. We were so well received and those folks
were so excited to have us come. They made our folks
feel so welcome.
The Hutterites practice the principles of the New
Testament Church in forfeiting all their earthly possessions
when they join the colony and then they have all
things in common. The speak German and they teach
their school children in German. Unlike the Amish, they
use modern farming equipment and their dairy, hog barn,
beef operation, poultry barn and storage barns are state
of the art. There are 6000 acres of farm land in their colony
and there are 41 colonies in Montana alone. The main
crop is wheat as at harvest the golden waves of grain
with snow capped mountains in the background make
for a spectacular view.
The school, the communal kitchen and their living
quarters are spotless. They had a huge garden and everybody
over six year of age works in some capacity. Those
under six are kept in what they call kindergarten during
the working day.
The men dress in black and the ladies wear long
dresses and identical bonnets. The children also wore a
uniform and the little kids are very cute in their attire.
The teenage girls dress the same as the women and they
served our meal. After the meal they sang to us in German
and their beautiful harmony sounded just like the
Trapp Family Singers in the Sound of Music.
This group is the hardest working group of people I
had ever seen and their property shows it. Another thing
that I noticed was that nobody was obese. They work it
off.
Let’s take a quick look at our yesterdays.
75 years ago: July 14, 1936- Givin tops Rose Hill
18-1 in 107 degree heat. Red Durham pitched a four hitter
and fanned 15 while G. Harper had four hits and D.
Baker and R. Baker each had three hits for Givin.
50 years ago: July 8, 1961- Butch Kunkle fired a
two-hitter and fanned 15 as the Osky Connie Mack team
gave Williamsburg its first loss in South Central Six play.
Larry Smith rapped a double and two singles and Keith
Dinsmore poked a pair of singles to lead CM.
25 years ago: July 12, 1986- Tri-County finishes
with an 11-5 win over Montezuma. Eric Stein pitched
the win and Jeff Foubert drove in four runs with a pair
of doubles. July 12- North Mahaska’s Suzette Northcutt
pitched a one-hitter, but Twin Cedars took a 2-0 win behind
the two-hit pitching of Helen Ford. Melanie Brannen
and Sharon Rouw had the NM hits.
Have a great week and remember that we need the
heat to make the corn grow.
Fresh Fruit
By: Phyllis Hall (printed in Daily Bread)
I love the old photographs that are printed on the obituary page of our
newspaper. “A grinning young man in a military uniform with words such
as: “92 years old, fought for his country in WWII.” Or a young woman with
sparkling eyes that reads: “89 years young, grew up on a farm in Kansas during
the Depression.” The newspaper message is: “I wasn’t always old, you
know.”
Too often those who have had a long life feel sidelined when they reach
their later years. Psalm 92, however, reminds us that no matter how old we
are, we can have a fresh and fruitful life. Men and women who have been
“planted” in the rich soil of God’s vineyard will continue to “bear fruit” and
“be fresh and flourishing.” Jesus promised that “he who abides in me, and I
in him, will continue to bear much fruit,” John 15:5.
Yes, muscles may ache and joints hurt and life may slow down a bit, but
inwardly we can be “renewed day by day,” Corinthians 4:16.
I recently saw a T-shirt on a beautiful white haired woman that said, “I’m
not 80; I’m 18 with 62 years experience.” No matter how old we get, we can
still be young at heart, but with the benefit of a well-lived lifetime of knowledge
and wisdom.
We can be young in heart and mind. To others we can yet be kind, sing
songs of praise to God through tears, and grow in grace through all our years.
Faithfulness is God’s requirement; fruitfulness is His reward.
Who Begins the 2011 Rein
as the KC Expo Fair Queen...
By Robin Handy, SNR Editor
Six beautifully intelligent
ladies are putting their best foot
forward attempting to claim the
crown and honor of being the
2011 Keokuk County Expo Queen
tonight (Thursday, July 14) night
at the 35th anniversary of the KC
Expo Fair. These young women
have already had a very busy
week, between their individual
interviews with the judges last
Sunday (July 10), participating in
the Expo Fair and preparing their
clothing ensemble for Thursday
night, they’ve had little time
to even worry about the ‘secret
question’ they have yet to face in
their bid for the 2011 crown. Ha!
The dreaded ‘secret question’
not only provides the contestants
an opportunity to share a bit of
their individual personality with
the audience and the panel of
judges, it also allows the judges
a glimpse in how the ladies are
able to handle themselves on the
fly. The question itself generally
focuses on how they would
positively project themselves
into a situation or cause for the
betterment of mankind. Piece of
cake - right? Well...Good luck,
ladies!
Each of these young women
are a vital part of the community;
they each volunteer in many ways
Aronia Berry Smoothies in addition
to discovering information on how
Keota Eagle Foods is sponsoring
the free* Aronia Berry Smoothies
along with Levi Lyle’s new business,
L.I.F.E. (Levi’s Indigenous
Berry Booth. The aronia berries are
all locally grown, but what is an
aronia berry?
A: An aronia berry is a very
dark berry similar in look to a blueberry,
it is packed full with antioxidants
and it is native to the United
States and sturdy enough to survive
as an Iowa crop.
Research has shown aronia has
more antioxidant power than other
fruits including grapes, elderberries,
blueberries, cranberries, raspberries,
blackberries, prunes, cherries,
bananas, oranges, apples and
pears. Studies have shown antioxidants
help reduce the risk for
cancer, heart disease, inflammation,
diabetes, bacterial infections and
neurological diseases in humans.
They also slow the aging process. 1
Clean out your attics, closets and lock boxes, because the Treasure
Hunters Roadshow is coming to Oskaloosa. Roadshow
specialists are in town next week examining gold and silver jewelry,
old coins and more.
While the Roadshow will accept anything that’s old and valuable,
they will be focusing on: gold and silver coins made before
1965, military items, fine art, musical instruments, pocket and
wrist watches. Scrap gold is expected to be a popular category
next week due to soaring gold prices.
Buyers for the Roadshow have noticed a tremendous increase
in the amount of gold coming to the shows, and for good reason.
Record gold prices have Roadshow guests cashing in on broken
or outdated jewelry with our fair and honest purchase offers.
The Roadshow encourages anyone planning a visit to take a minute
and examine their jewelry box or their lock box at the bank
and gather anything that is gold. If a guest is not sure if something
is gold, bring it anyway and the Roadshow staff will test it
for free. Other gold items of interest include gold coins, gold
ounces, gold proof sets and dental gold.
Other types of items Roadshow specialists hope to see include
vintage guitars. Ryan Krushas, one of the Roadshow’s instru-
