Trying to get an AED for School
John Colligan is still volunteering at school for the sports medicine program,
red cross training of students
and staff and now just returned to
the Fire Department as the third
EMT available during the day.
That’s right. During the week,
Monday to Friday, there are three
EMTs available in New Sharon.
Because of this Colligan thinks the
school needs to be self suffient to
take care of students and general
public.
He is trying to raise the money
through donations for an AED for
the North Mahaska Elementary and
Daycare. This unit would be available
for the general public trained in
CPR/AED use. All staff is trained as
well as 100 students.
Numerous studies show that
AEDs in schools save lives. Sudden
cardiac arrest (SCA) strikes approx-
Some Thoughts on Diet
Today on Friday, my husband
has spent the entire morning in the
kitchen juicing carrots and baking
chocolate chip cookies. I told him he
ought to enter some of his cookies in
the fair. I think he thought I was kidding,
but he is a really good baker.
After he was finished, and while the
oven was still hot, I mixed up a batch
of healthy muffins.
I found the recipe in my last
women’s magazine, Good Housekeeping,
and they turned out pretty
good. Here it is:
Cranberry-Lemon Muffins
1 c old-fashioned oats
¾ c cranberries (I did not have
them, so used blueberries instead)
¼ c. agave syrup (did not have
that either, so used honey)
1 ½ c. whole wheat flour
2 ½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 c. almond milk (any other milk
would also work)
¼ c. canola oil (I always use
applesauce as cuts way down on the
calories and fat)
1 large egg (also included two
egg whites from a previous recipe)
½ tsp grated lemon peel
You are probably chuckling by
now, because of all the substitutes,
but the muffins turned out fine. You
could also use any dried fruit, which
I think would work just as well.
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grind
the oats into flour in a food processor
or blender. Mix the dry ingredients
and then wet and fold in the fruit.
Ladle into muffin cups and bake for
25 minutes or less. This made a big
batch so had enough extra for 12
mini muffins, which are about the
size of a large grape and that you can
just pop in your mouth.
You can see that there was no
white flour or white sugar in this recipe.
Did you know that both are very
bad for us? Here in this country a
large part of our diet revolves around
these two ingredients. It seems about
all of our processed foods include
them. Every celebration we have,
whether it be a wedding, a graduation,
birthday, anniversary—whatever—we
traditionally celebrate
with cakes, cookies, ice cream, or
other baked goods using white flour
and/or white sugar.
These two ingredients have had
the life processed out of them until
little if any nutritional value remains.
I have heard it said that when you go
to the grocery store, only shop the
perimeter, as around the edge of the
store are the fresh fruits and vegetables,
meats, cheeses, etc. It’s in the
middle of the store aisles where you
find all the processed, boxed, and
canned foods.
This is the American way of
eating, but in some other countries
around the world, it is not so. Some
countries are so poor they have a
very restricted diet and with very
little or no meat. Some countries are
better off financially, but eat much
differently than Americans do and
some do not have the health problems
we have.
Eating highly processed foods,
fast foods, drinking gallons of pop
and other sugary drinks—or if not
sugared, it is a sugar substitute
which, except for Stevia, can be extremely
harmful—it is the American
way of eating and we are paying the
price for it.
Obesity in our country is astronomical
causing huge sums in lost
days at work, the resulting illnesses
where doctors put their patients on
prescription drugs to try to deal with
their health problems, plus the untold
misery lived in daily by the persons
themselves.
A poor diet can also result in
behavioral changes of all sorts and
types that afflict both children and
adults.
Several years ago I came across
the book “Food & Behavior” by Barbara
Reed Stitt. I was amazed when
I read it then and amazed in looking
through it today. Mrs. Stitt was
a probation officer in Ohio for 20
years and during 12 of those years
studied first-hand the relationship of
diet and behavior.
Over and over it became apparent
that when a person’s diet improved—the
behavior improved!
Over and over, Mrs. Stitt worked
with the people who came through
her office, encouraging them to eat
better. There is a whole lot more to
this story and I hope to continue it
next week.
Barbara Stitt so wants the truth
about the connection between diet
and behavior to be known, that she
has given 100% permission to use
parts of her book to be copied or
used “in any way to help people”.
You probably know that I am
passionate about this subject because
of what happened in my own
life 10 years ago next month—when
I changed my diet, I received great
relief from my years-long battle with
Fibromyalgia and Irritable Bowel
Syndrome. There is always an answer
and it is delightful when we
find it, isn’t it?!
Until next time, have a good
one and enjoy this marvelous spring
weather!
Smiles and
Giggles
By Bo Be
I’m sure that everyone who got
and who read the March 8th issue of
the New Sharon Sun newspaper enjoyed
the coverage stories, pictures
and the enclosed booklet. May we
say to everyone who had a part in that
publication that issue of the North
Mahaska girls’ basketball team capturing
state title in 1A bracket job
well done. On scale from 1 to 10
we rate ya 12, yup. Many great
pictures were there but one really
captured my eye. Was of Gayle Ferguson
and her 2 grand daughters Allie
and Hannah both great players on
the team. Saw Gayle at the store and
she and I both agreed that pic would
have been perfect if only grandpa
Jerry would have been in it. But you
know think somehow he knew the
thrill of the victory.
Smiles to East Market Grocery
and Deli for donating 3 beautifully
decorated sheet cakes that were
served at the victory party held at
the school one evening. Hey here’s
“lookin” at ya Dr. Jim Else who is
our optometrist and to many others
here in New Sharon glad to “see”
your ad in our paper. Know you
like sports – thanks for your support
of the girls team. Be seein ya.
Also thanks to all others who put ads
in. My Robin Red Breast with the
crippled wing is back in our neighborhood.
Wonder how they know to
come to the same local each year.
Speaking of birds, have you
ever noticed that the male species
are always beautiful feathered, nice
colored plumes, always first at the
feeders, usually win the fight for
the highest branch to roost. And the
prettiest one always gets his favorite
mate. Now is that right, males always
No. 1!!!
On a recent nice sunny day my
door bell went ding dong and there
was my good friend Ramona Saunders
along with Brenda Sparks, her
helper coming for a visit and boy
did we visit, think the air ways blew
for awhile. Yup. She brought a belated
gift, a movie “The Bodyguard”
staring Whitney Houston and Kevin
Costner. Good show, thanks Moner.
By the way friend Brenda has gone
to school and is now licensed to
provide health home care. So if you
need help or a loved one is in need
of some T.L.C (tender loving care)
contact her, you’ll be glad you did.
The day I’m writing this temps to
reach 78, wow!
Please continue to keep Rosemary
Schmidt in your prayers. She
is at mayo clinic Rochester, Minn. as
of this writing with Sammie right by
her side. Hope he is singing her favorite
songs to her.
Vista Tips
As much as I don’t like Microsoft’s Windows Operating System Vista,
people still need to know to use it. So, for the next few weeks tips will be
about Vista. (Windows 7 is a lot like Vista, but way better!)
Vista’s ReadyBoost feature allows you to plug in a USB flash drive or a
flash memory card and use its contents to cache frequently used files. Surprisingly,
this feature really works, and with the cost of 1GB+ flash drives
these days it’s a cheap way to speed up a system without having to call me.
New Sharon Library
The New Sharon Library Book Club met on March 13 to discuss THE
GIVER by Lois Lowry. Although this book is classified as an adolescent
novel, the adults in the group found it to be insightful and full of thoughtprovoking
ideas.
The group decided to read a nonfiction book for April. We will meet on
April 10 at 1:30 in the library to talk about ZOYA’S STORY: An Afghan
Woman’s Struggle for Freedom. This nonfiction work takes the reader to
war-torn Afghanistan. Afghanistani culture and Taliban horrors are vividly
described through the eyes of a young woman who is actually living through
them, trying to make things better for women in her country.
“Though she is only twenty-three, Zoya has witnessed and endured more
tragedy and terror than most people experience in a lifetime. Born in a land
ravaged by war, she was robbed of her parents when they were murdered by
Muslim fundamentalists. Devastated, she fled Kabul with her grandmother
and started a new life in exile in Pakistan. She joined the Revolutionary Association
of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), an organization that challenged
the crushing edicts of the Taliban government, and she took destiny
into her own hands, joining a dangerous, clandestine war to save her nation.
Direct and unsentimental, Zoya vividly brings to life the realities of
growing up in a Muslim culture, the terror of living in a perpetual war zone,
the pain of losing those she has loved, the horrors of a woman’s life under
the Taliban, and the discovered healing and transformation that lead her on a
path of resistance. “ from Amazon.com
Everyone is welcome to join the group for discussion or just to listen to
ideas about the book.
We are back home from a week in sunny Arizona, it was a little cool
there the first few days but we left Iowa at 72 degrees and got into AZ at 72
degrees. We so enjoyed a couple of days on four wheelers in the desert. The
blooms were almost out and a few were. We rode on paths that were rock
after rock that were a bit rough. Good thing we were seat belted it. Oh it was
beautiful with the largest cactus they say does not get arms until they are over
50 years old. Some had arms on arms. It was not to hot but perfect there with
cool nights and warm days. We came home on the 13th. And landed in Cedar
Rapids, where we picked up the car and looked up David Rockwell at work
as it was his 21st. Birthday and his Mom had sent up red cake from AZ. By
the time we got home it was 11 o clock but time has a way of slipping by. I
talked to my daughter tonight and she said it had snowed and rained and had
hail stones that when landed in the pool made steam. I am glad we were not
there this past week then. We attended church on Sunday with Karol. They
run two services on Saturday night and three on Sunday. We went to the eight
o clock one and there must have been 2000 people. They had policeman to
direct traffic out of the parking lot. It was unbelievable.
It was hot enough here when we broke records for heat on these past
days. Dale Heishman, Woody Holt, Josh Rockwell and Camden Watson and
RL ran cement two days in our machine shed. I tried to hire a cook but did
not find one so we winged it and it was not fancy food. But they ate it anyway.
We sure were not ready for this heat. Barb Heishman came out a few
minutes for her mail I collected over the winter months. In the afternoon my
sister Barb Long and my niece Sheryl Swearengin of KS came by a little
while. They had been to Pella and had lunch with our niece, Susan Lyons
over her noon break. She teaches in Pella.
Congratulations to Jason, Searsboro, Anderson who became the father
of triplets in Feb. Now that makes four under 3. I hope they have some help.
Thursday night we attended the FFA banquet in Montezuma for our
grandson, Camden Watson. There was a big crowd in attendance. Mr. Swenson
has really built the program up over the years he has been at Montezuma.
He is married to the former Molly Ferguson from New Sharon. They have
won a lot of awards and the Seniors honored him with gifts of appreciation.
I have been saving bottle caps and lids of all kinds for the Lynnville-
Sully art department. I hope my niece, Beth Hamilton does not forget to get
them when it is time. I have quite a pile.
Lots of very sick folk around. Marion Ridley is very sick and so is
Mike Dean the husband of Luanne Watson Dean. So many to think about and
money can not buy your health and so we need to keep our priority’s straight.
Be thankful for the small things we have and be glad for those who do have.
Guess I will close now looks like we are in for a bout of rain ahead and
maybe with the heat and wind it will be a welcome thing for we do not want
a dry year ahead. Stress it can kill you. A day at a time, moment by moment,
and it passes and only the things done for eternity will last.
Grief Healing Program
Set for April
Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s Hospice will offer a five-week grief
support group designed for anyone in the community who has lost a loved
one. The group will explore the challenges associated with loss as well as the
opportunities that loss presents for healing and growth.
Randy Svendsen, LBSW,
GRMC social worker, will facilitate
the group. He emphasizes, “The
grief support group will be a safe
place for participants to share their
loss and fond memories of their
loved. Everyone travels down the
grief journey in their unique way
but we share common stages and
emotions. The intent of this group is
for grieving individuals to explore
ways to remember, heal, and grow.”
Gatherings will be held on five
Mondays, beginning April 2 and
running through April 30. The support
group will be held at 6 p.m.
at the Drake Community Library,
Spring Cleaning
It’s that time again, but hey, we
aren’t doing it. How about that? We
did fall cleaning so will pass on the
spring this time around. Oh, yes, the
normal stuff will be done and some
extra sprucing up here and there, but
no windows and curtains. I can’t say
I feel bad about that, either.
I do know that I no longer do that
big job alone—it is just too much—
so I am most grateful that my helpful
husband puts his shoulder to this
job with me and together we get the
whole thing accomplished. It’s just
not much fun to do it alone.
I did another big task this past
week—cleaning out our clothes
closet upstairs. This is where the seasonal
clothes go. I had not done anything
with this closet for well, quite
awhile, so it was good to get in there,
sort through stuff, scrub the floor and
put things back.
I got rid of tons of excess clothes
hangers, excess clothes and other
stuff until the trunk of the car was
full to take to the thrift in Pella. I had
allotted myself one hour to do this
task. Silly me. It took way longer
than that, but I was very glad to have
it done. It looked like a 300 lb. woman
was reduced to about 130. Ha!
At the same time, I brought the
spring-summer apparel down to
our downstairs closets and took the
winter stuff up. (didn’t we still need
our heavy sweaters just a few weeks
ago?) A few days later, I switched out
the tops and sweaters and seasonal
shoes. And got rid of more then, too.
Such a good feeling to clean up and
clear out.
On Wednesday, which was supposed
to be a normal day at home, all
of a sudden a few errands popped up
and we wound up going to Newton
and Des Moines.
We were nearly out of cat food,
so stopped in at Pet Kingdom in
Newton for a bag of Blue Buffalo (an
odd name, I know). The cheap stuff
just does not work for our cats—our
older cat, who is 13 this month, has
a tender tummy, and the last time I
tried an off brand, I wound up taking
our young cat to the vet as he began
to vomit blood. So we stay with what
works. They don’t need to eat tons of
it and stay fit and healthy.
I recall last year, I had stopped
at Pet Kingdom at its handy location
on the west side of the Newton
square only to find a sign on the door
of the empty store. As I pulled into
my parking place, I could see the
store was indeed empty, so with a
sinking heart I walked up to check it
out. Thankfully the sign read, “We
have moved!” giving their new location.
You can believe, I hustled down
Thank you for reading
the New Sharon Sun!
there pretty quick. The lady inside
just laughed when I told her of my
first bit of concern, “No, we aren’t
going out of business,” she said.
Then we drove on to Des Moines
where I visited Costco, Campbell’s
Health Food Store, and JoAnn’s, arriving
home by 4.
Thursday morning was our time
with the dulcimer girls playing music,
chatting and comparing crocheting
and knitting notes. In the afternoon,
I drove into Pella with a friend
for my adjustment with Dr. Smith.
Things went so well there that I do
not have to return for two weeks.
After that was another appointment,
and then we drove down to Eagle’s
Landing only to find no eagles in
sight. Even the seagull population
seemed depleted. Still the weather
was beautiful, so we took a short
walk over the bridge and around the
west loop. It looks like lots of people
enjoy coming out to this spot to
walk, jog or ride their bikes.
After checking out the thrift and
unloading my truck, we kept our
appointment at our weekly Weight
Watchers meeting. We have a new
leader now, Catherine, and as I
spoke with her afterwards, found
out she has only been doing this
three weeks. I expect it was a little
daunting to come in to our meeting
cold like that and to try to replace a
well-liked leader. But I think Catherine
will do well—she is friendly,
personable, and did a good job in
the meeting. (I figured she had done
this lots of times before, she was so
good). I hope people will give her a
chance. We have a really great group
that comes—friendly, helpful, encouraging
and supportive of one another.
On Friday I had thought to get
some sewing done, but the outdoors
called and my husband was out there,
so put on my work shoes, grabbed
my gloves and proceeded to clean
out the English Garden here beside
the house. It is the hardest garden to
do, as there is so much stuff in there.
The others will be easier. We don’t
do all the beds in one day like we
probably did years ago—it is piecemeal
now, which works out just fine.
The flowers force this to be done
as their green tips poke right through
the dry leaves, putting out a call to
“come and clean us out!”
I still can’t believe it is spring already,
but leave you with this little
ditty shared by my mother-in-law
years ago:
Spring has sprung, the grass has
ris
I wonder where the flowers is?
Congratulations to the
community of North Mahaska.
A fantastic season for
the Lady Warhawks!
Many of the public that provided
the car caravan in 1953, were
supporters today! What a
wonderful group of people
behind North Mahaska over
the years...
Just Sayin’
By Ralphi Munson
Can you believe this weather? If we always had winters like this, I
wouldn’t mind living in Iowa. I woke up last Saturday (you know how you
are groggy first thing in the morning) and heard the birds chirping through
our open windows. My immediate thought was how nice it was going to be
and the kids could go maybe go swimming since I was just sure school was
out and it was summer break. It’s hard to believe there are still 2 months of
school to go.
Here’s a funny thought about our mild winter. DeLaney is a Senior
and that class is not happy about our mild winter. You know why? Because
when you are graduating, you get out of school on a specific day... no matter
what. This is usually a special treat because the underclassmen have to go
longer to make up snow days. No such bragging rights this year. We’re fine
with that, aren’t we?
I am a huge ‘winter hater’ so I have enjoyed not having to break out the
3 layer, down filled coat over the past few months. As much as I appreciated
every nice day we had, I wondered if there would be a down side to being
able to feel my toes and fingers the majority of the winter months. I think
I’m seeing signs of that already.
While sitting in our garage with the door wide open this weekend,
neighbors and kids stopped by to visit. Great conversation, lots of laughs,
and then....BUGS! I can’t help but wonder what the population of the pesky
insects will be like as it continues to warm up. I have a feeling they will be
in abundance. I’m pretty sure I’ve swallowed 2 already.
Tales of the
Ancient Sportsman
By Burdell Hensley
In the good old summertime! It seems like we are there and the spring
flowers and trees think so. Motorcycles are all over the place, sun worshippers
are out and about, golf courses are busy and garages are for sale already.
Now if the Frosty Udder opens then I will know it is summer.
But perhaps it is a little early to get so giddy. As I was reading though
the old newspapers for the history session, I discovered that 25 years ago a
blizzard roared through the state leaving up to 14 inches of snow in some
places. I also remember a spring like this in 1973, I think. We had enjoyed
some wonderful spring weather in late March and early April. Several outdoor
track meets had been held in lovely weather and then during the second
week in April, we received 18 inches of snow in Oskaloosa. Everything was
shut down for about a week. So perhaps we should temper our excitement
just a little.
It was spring break last week and I played golf nine of the last ten days.
Shucks, some folks went to Texas or Arizona to play golf and it was probably
too hot there to play. It was beautiful here and many folks took advantage of
the opportunity.
Thursday I had a bingo event for our Connections Club group from the
bank. It was a beautiful day for the folks to come out and a great time was
had by all. I so appreciate all the folks that pitched in to make the event successful.
Saturday I made a severe error in judging my abilities. I had been walking
the Harvest Point Golf Course with relative ease, so I decided to walk
the first nine holes at Edmundson. I had not played that course since the city
council let Jeff and Lori Smith go and that has been a few years ago. Now
with the city out of the golf course business and the Smiths back in management
I have a membership that allows me to play both courses.
By the time I got to hole No. 3, I realized that this course was built in
the Edmundson mountain range which is about two miles east of Beacon. I
played terrible and I lost three golf balls. I forgot how friendly the crick and
the pond were.
Date of Public Hearing: April 2, 2012
Time of Public Hearing: 6:30 p.m.
Location of Public Hearing:
Elementary Conference Room, New Sharon IA
The Board of Directors will conduct a public hearing at the above-noted time and place for the
purpose of amending the current school budget by changing estimates of expenditures in the following
areas by the following amounts:
Area From To Reasons
Instruction
Total Support Services
Noninstructional Programs
Total Other Expenditures
1,920,000 2,076,587 increase expenses for the one-to-one computer
This change in estimates of expenditures will be financed from increased receipts and balances not
budgeted or considered in the current budget. There will be no increase in taxes to be paid in the
fiscal year ending June 30, 2012. At the hearing, any resident or taxpayer may present objections to,
or arguments in favor of, any part of the proposed amendment. A detailed statement of additional
receipts other than taxes, balances on hand at the close of the preceding fiscal year, and proposed
expenditures, both past and anticipated, will be available at the hearing.
And there’s another “bug” that isn’t good...influenza. I can’t believe
how many people are still coming down with that illness. I’m not a medical
genius but I’ve heard hospital workers talk about how it never got cold
enough to kill the virus roaming from person to person. Last week DeLaney
didn’t feel good. Off and on fever, runny nose, etc. I figured it was a sinus
or allergy problem, but on the third day of feeling yucky we decided to see
Lisa Nelson (Melissa was on vacation) just to make sure. I’m glad we did.
She had strep throat without the sore throat! How weird is that? I thought
I’d share that with you just in case you also know of someone feeling under
the weather and waits for their symptoms to ‘run their course’.
According to some weather experts (who get paid the big bucks at their
guessing game), we might be in for a drought. I have mixed feelings about
this dilemma. I appreciate the farmers and all they do to feed our country. I
want what’s best for their crops. But I also remember seeing many people
who have been displaced or affected by the recent floods that seem to plague
parts of our country. Do we need one dry summer to get our water table back
under control? I guess we will see.
Here’s a tip...stock up on maple syrup now. While enjoying my waffle
at work the other day, one of the staff told me something about how the trees
didn’t get hard enough due to the mild winter and they won’t produce enough
sap this summer. I don’t really understand the miracle of mother nature, but
I’m heading to East Market Grocery to buy a few bottles of Aunt Jemima just
in case. This is just another example of the little things we didn’t think about
on our 50 degree winter days.
While weather is always an interesting topic to discuss with anyone you
encounter, it’s not the most important thing on my mind. Please continue to
pray for T.J. Goemaat and his family. They have touched so many with their
faith, grace, and strength. My hope is that you have been inspired by this
amazing 10 year old boy and all who love him so something good can come
from this heart breaking situation. To God Be the Glory.
I was reminded this week of how good we have it in Iowa when
I watched a couple of the Missouri Girls State Basketball final games. I
watched the Class 4-A game between Republic and Smithville and those
would be schools the size of Oskaloosa or Mount Pleasant. The Class 5-A
game featured Blue Springs and Rockbridge of Columbia which represent
the largest schools in the state.
My observation was that North Mahaska would have competed very
well with any of the teams. The second thing I noticed was that the crowd
was very small and scattered. I doubt if it would have filled one side of Wells
Fargo. The last thing I noticed was the absence of any halftime awards or
entertainment. Our Iowa Girls Athletic Union certainly has a leg up on Missouri.
Speaking of girls basketball, I was so pleased when my copy of Reminisce
Extra arrived this week and inside was a picture of the Rose Hill girls
team of 1932. The photo was submitted by Deborah Stiner of Geneseo, Illinois
and she reports that her grandmother, Dorothy Hawk Hodgson was in
the front row. If any of you see this picture and know the identities of any of
the other players, I would love to know who they are.
How is your economy doing? You had to notice that gas went up another
dime. The bad thing is that the E-85 gang raised their price as well so that I
don’t have the 60 cent difference I need to do better with E-85. I think they
are all in cahoots. If oil is going to be $100 a barrel, then corn should be $100
a bushel. That should toast their cornflakes.
Friday night I was pleased to attend a soup supper for Ken Rozenboom,
candidate for the Iowa Senate. I would be honored to support him. It is refreshing
to have someone stand up against the onslaught of things from the
left that threaten the freedoms my family members shed blood for.
Dan Neiuswma’s Bluegrass band was playing at the supper and as I
walked in I noticed that the bass fiddle player looked a lot like my doctor. It
was my doctor! I didn’t know he played anything but a cold stethoscope. I
love Bluegrass music and this group is good.
Let’s take a look at what happened in our yesterdays.
75 years ago: Mar. 22, 1937- Tiny Melrose stunned the basketball experts
by whipping unbeaten Marshalltown 35-17 for the state championship.
Jim Thynne led the Shamrocks with 16 points. Mar. 26- Walter “Bucky”
O’Connor of Melrose was named 1st Team All-State.
50 years ago: Mar. 31, 1962- Sigourney’s Larry Smith won the 50 yard
dash at the Class A state indoor track meet. Pella’s Jerry Slykhius was fourth
in the mile run and Pella’s Phil Ongna tied for fifth in the high jump.
25 years ago: Mar. 25, 1987- North Mahaska’s LeAnn Dahm was named
to the DMRC first team as a guard. Eddyville’s Troy Lobberecht was named
to the boy’s first team.
Bird Banding
Experience at Lake Red Rock
Bird Banding Experience is scheduled for Saturday, March 31 from 7:00
to 10:00 a.m. at the Red Rock Visitor Center
Join Nelson Hoskins, area birdwatcher and licensed bird bander, to experience
what the science of bird banding is all about! Mist nets will be set up
around the Red Rock Visitor Center to capture small birds which will then
be fitted with numbered leg bands to track their movements (if recaptured at
some point in the future). Come check out the thrill of seeing live birds “in
hand” as they are banded for future research! The activity is free of charge,
and no reservations are needed. Come anytime during the three-hour activity
to experience the action! For more information, contact the Corps of Engineers
office at (641) 828-7522 or (641) 628-8690.
