these black dots join the rings, forming a ventral black line. Although most of the<br />

dots (black or white) are situated in the mid body, the position is very variable<br />

making unique combinations for each individual (sometimes helpful for individual<br />

i<strong>de</strong>ntification).<br />

L. saintgironsi – This species is also characterised by a ban<strong>de</strong>d pattern (hence the<br />

name tricot rayé). The background colour is far more variable compared to L.<br />

laticaudata. It ranges from greyish to bright red, with light brown and orange<br />

individuals (picture 1). In the south of the area (around the Île <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> pins) the<br />

background is sometimes blue-grey, leading to possible confusion between the two<br />
