‘Ik volg gewoon de klank’
‘I just follow the sound’
Arturo Sandoval: ‘Hoezeer ik ook andere dingen wil
spelen, mensen blijven vragen om Cubaanse muziek.’
Arturo Sandoval: ‘No matter how much I want to play
other things, the public keeps asking for Cuban music.’
Trompettist Arturo Sandoval,
één van de grootste jazzmuzikanten
van het moment,
verzorgde eind november
vorig jaar in het World Music
& Dance Centre (WMDC) in
Rotterdam een clinic voor studenten
van het Rotterdams
Conservatorium en andere
belangstellenden. Een gesprek
met de geboren Cubaan
over diens leven, carrière en
muziek.
Het is een grauwe vrijdagmiddag
in Rotterdam; de stad gaat
gehuld in een mistroostige
nevel van motregen. Op de
veertiende verdieping van het
Bilderberg Parkhotel klinken
heldere trompetklanken. Een
zoete melodie, vol improvisatie
en hoorbaar speelplezier, vult de
gang. In de Presidential Suite repeteert
Arturo Sandoval (1949)
ontspannen op zijn instrument.
Even later toont hij het goudkleurige
prachtexemplaar met
gegraveerde bloemenmotieven
en een hangend gouden kruisje
als ornament. ‘Deze trompet heb
ik pas een paar maanden,’ vertelt
de blaasvirtuoos. ‘Ik speelde er
een paar noten op, het geluid
beviel me, dus ik zei: ik neem
hem. Wellicht vind ik morgen
een trompet die nog beter
klinkt.
Sandoval
vertelde tijdens zijn clinic
in het WMDC aan studenten en
docenten van het Rotterdams
Conservatorium hoe hij als
klein jochie het geluid van de
trompet hoorde. ‘Ik was meteen
verkocht. Het instrument biedt
je zo’n enorm spectrum: je kunt
fluisterend de liefde verklaren,
maar ook schreeuwen van
woede.’
Jaren later zou hij weer een ander
geluid volgen, dat van de
grote Dizzy Gillespie. Sandoval
beaamt in zijn hotelkamer dat
de legende klopt. ‘Toen Dizzy in
1977 Cuba bezocht, reed ik hem
inderdaad rond door Havana. In
die tijd zat ik een beetje aan te
modderen, domino te spelen,
rum te drinken. Toen hij kwam
wist ik: dat wil ik ook.’ Gillespie
nam Sandoval in bescherming,
ook op persoonlijk vlak. ‘Hij
hielp me bij mijn asielaanvraag
in de Verenigde Staten. Ik heb
veel aan hem te danken.’
Sandoval chargeert: naast domino
spelen had hij een paar
jaar eerder met Paquito D’Rivera
en Chucho Valdés één van de
meest vernieuwende Cubaanse
bands opgericht: Irakere. ‘Dizzy
vertelde iedereen in de VS over
ons. Vlak daarna kwam er een
directeur van Columbia naar
onze repetitie kijken. We kregen
een driejarig contract en werden
naar New York gevlogen om
in Carnegie Hall te spelen. Moet
je nagaan; onze eerste keer in
Amerika en we speelden daar.
Het voelde alsof we zweefden.
Met de opnamen van die show
wonnen we meteen een Grammy
Award.’
De rest is geschiedenis. Sandoval
begon zijn eigen groep,
ging verschillende keren met
Gillespie mee op tournee, en
verruilde uiteindelijk in 1990 zijn
geboorteland voor Miami. De
Grammy-teller staat inmiddels
op vijf. De nu 58-jarige muzikant
speelde met alle groten uit de
jazz, heeft een eigen jazzclub
in zijn nieuwe woonplaats en
er werd een film gemaakt over
zijn leven, met Andy Garcia in de
hoofdrol (For Love or Country:
The Arturo Sandoval Story).
goed behandeld. Echt, het was
een verschil van dag en nacht.’
Toch gaat Sandoval op zijn laatste
album, Rumba Palace, terug
naar zijn muzikale wortels. In
muziek.’
Sandoval is bekend als trompettist,
maar eigenlijk is multiinstrumentalist
een betere
omschrijving. Hij zingt en scat,
en hij speelt geregeld een partijtje
timbales mee. Zijn tweede
liefde is echter de piano: ‘De
klank van dat instrument is als
balsem voor de ziel. Piano spelen
is het eerste wat ik doe als ik
’s ochtends opsta.’ Muziek is simpelweg
de taal die hij spreekt.
‘Dat is wat ik hier ben komen
doen, wat me beweegt, wat me
gelukkig maakt.’
Ga naar www.codarts.nl voor
een verslag en foto’s van de clinic
van Arturo Sandoval.
Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval,
one of the greatest contemporary
jazz musicians, gave a
clinic for students of the Rotterdam
Conservatoire and
others who were interested at
the end of November last year
in the World Music & Dance
Centre (WMDC) in Rotterdam.
A conversation with the Cuban-born
musician about his
life, career and music.
It is a grey Friday afternoon in
Rotterdam; the city is cloaked
in a gloomy mist of drizzling
rain. On the fourteenth floor of
the Bilderberg Park Hotel, the
clear notes of a trumpet sound.
A sweet improvised melody,
played by someone who is obviously
enjoying it, fills the hallway.
In the Presidential Suite,
Arturo Sandoval (1949) is relaxed
while he practices on his
trumpet.
A few minutes later, he shows
off the stunning golden instrument
engraved with a motif of
flowers and decorated with a
hanging golden cross. ‘I’ve just
had this trumpet for a couple
of months,’ says the virtuoso. ‘I
played a couple of notes on it, I
liked the sound, and so I said: I’ll
take it. Maybe tomorrow I’ll find
another trumpet that sounds
better. I just follow the sound.
And I see where it takes me.’
That sentiment could actually
describe the entire career of one
of today’s most famous trumpeters,
a musician who feels as
much at home with jazz and
pop as with classical and Afro-
Caribbean music. Sandoval told
students and teachers from the
Rotterdam Conservatoire during
his clinic in the WMDC how,
as a small boy, he had heard
the sound of a trumpet. ‘I loved
it. The instrument offers such
a wide spectrum of possibilities:
you can declare your love
in a whisper, or you can scream
with rage.’
Years later, he would follow another
sound, that of the great
Dizzy Gillespie. In his hotel
room, Sandoval confirms that
the legend is true. ‘When Dizzy
visited Cuba in 1977, I drove
him around Havana. At that
time, I wasn’t being very serious.
I was spending time playing
dominoes and drinking rum.
When he came to Cuba, I realized
it: that is what I wanted,
too.’ Gillespie took Sandoval under
his wing, professionally but
also personally. ‘He helped me
with my asylum application for
the United States. I have a lot to
thank him for.’
Sandoval rather downplays
what he was doing in those
days: in addition to playing
dominoes, he had set up one of
the most innovative bands in
Cuba a couple of years earlier
with Paquito D’Rivera and Chucho
Valdés; the band was called
Irakere. ‘Dizzy told everyone in
the US about us. Shortly thereafter,
a director from Columbia
came to watch one of our rehearsals.
We got a three-year
contract and were flown to New
York to play in Carnegie Hall.
Try to imagine it: it was our first
time in America, and we were
playing there. It felt as if we
were floating. The recording of
that show immediately won us a
Grammy Award.’
The rest is history. Sandoval
started his own group, toured
on many occasions with
Gillespie, and finally left his
native Cuba in 1990 to live in
Miami. He has now won five
Grammies. The 58-year-old musician
has played with all the
greats of jazz and has his own
jazz club in his new city. A film
has been made about his life,
with Andy Garcia playing the
lead role (For Love or Country:
The Arturo Sandoval Story).
Sandoval feels like a fish in water
in the United States. He has
performed in the White House
and recently shared the stage
with Justin Timberlake and Alicia
Keys. He is sometimes reproached
for renouncing his
native Cuba. His reaction is laconic:
‘In Cuba I was not appreciated
for what I did. I was once
put in jail for listening to jazz on
the radio. The US has embraced
me and treated me well. Really,
it was like the difference between
day and night.’
Nevertheless, Sandoval has returned
to his musical roots on
his latest album, Rumba Palace.
In fact, it is the first recording
he has made with only Cuban
music. This time it was not so
much the sound he followed as
the market. ‘It wasn’t necessary
for me, but the audience was
really asking for it. No matter
how much I want to play other
things, the public keeps asking
for Cuban music.’
Sandoval is known as a trumpeter,
but, in fact, he is really a
multi-instrumentalist. He sings
and scats, and he regularly plays
the timbales. His second love is,
however, the piano: ‘The sound
of that instrument is like balm
for the soul. Playing the piano
is the first thing that I do when
I get up in the morning.’ Music
is simply the language that he
speaks. ‘That is what I am here
to do. It is what moves me and
makes me happy.’
Jampotpourri
Bartho Staalman (22), derdejaarsstudent aan de
Rotterdam Pop Academy (RPA), wil graag verschillende
muziekstijlen bij elkaar brengen. Elke tweede woensdag
muziekgenres heel belangrijk is.
Jampotpourri
Bartho Staalman (22), a third year student at the Rotterdam
Pop Academy (RPA), really enjoys bringing different
musical styles together. So, every second Wednesday of
the month he organises Jampotpourri, a jam session in
which students can play together with two session leaders.
Each time, the leaders are a different pair with completely
different musical backgrounds.
Bartho: ‘In 2005, I organised Jampotpourri for the first
time. I love so many different styles of music, and I really
wanted to create a forum where creativity and the blending
of different musical genres were important. Then I
dreamed up the concept of the two session leaders. They
get the session going, and then the students who come
and teachers from all musical genres. ‘Jazz, tango, classical,
it doesn’t matter. My ambition is to create musical combinations
Thibaut Cherradi
en het werk van and the work of
Mauro Bigonzetti
Thibaut Cherradi: ‘Alle studenten hier bezitten een goede techniek.’
Thibault Cherradi: ‘All of the students here have good technical skills.’
Thibaut Cherradi, in januari 1976 geboren in Belfort, in
Ballet du Capitole in Toulouse.
specifieke stijl. Voor een danser is dat prettig, want je
doet steeds iets anders.’
Aterballetto danst Thibaut in ruim honderd voorstellingen
‘Het geeft me veel
voldoening als ik een danser dingen zie doen op het
toneel die ik hem of haar heb geleerd.’
The repertoire of the Rotterdam Dance Academy
(RDA) – in other words, the choreographies that can
be danced by students during school performances
– includes pieces by countless well-known choreographers.
One of them is Mauro Bigonzetti, the artistic
director of the Italian company Aterballetto.
Thibaut Cherradi, one of his dancers, is in Rotterdam
to stage pieces by Bigonzetti with RDA students.
Thibault Cherradi, born in 1976 in Belfort, in eastern
France, has worked before in the studios of the Rotterdam
Dance Academy (RDA). A few years ago – ‘in 2004 to be
precise, the year my son was born’ – he was here to stage
a work for male dancers, Psappha. Now he is staging
three other pieces with RDA students: a trio from Cantata,
Songs (also a trio), and Duetto Inoffensivo; all of these
pieces are excerpts from ballets by Mauro Bigonzetti.
In 1997, Bigonzetti became the artistic director of the
renowned Compagnia Aterballetto, and he immediately
asked Thibault if he wanted to become a member of the
company. The 32-year-old Frenchman is still dancing with
Aterballetto, particularly in choreographies by Bigonzetti,
but also in work by others, including Itzik Gallili, Ohad
Naharin and Jiří Kylián. The most impressive moment of
his career so far, says Thibault, was dancing together with
the ballerina Sylvie Guillem in the quartet Steptext, in
1999, that William Forsythe had created in 1985 for Aterballetto.
‘That was an amazing experience.’
Thibault received his dance education in Paris, Nancy
and Lyon. As a finalist in a competition, he had the opportunity
to dance in 1994 for several months on tour
with the English National Ballet. Later that year, he joined
the Ballet du Capitole in Toulouse. He danced there until
1997, when Bigonzetti invited him to join Aterballetto.
‘I got to know Mauro during my stay in England. That was
also the first time that I saw his work,’ says Thibault. ‘At the
time, I thought: if this man ever leads a company, I want
to dance in it.’
Thibault loves the physical aspect of Bigonzetti’s work,
he says. He laughs: ‘You are really tired after you have
danced in one of his pieces.’ Thibault also enjoys the
choreographer’s musical choices. ‘It is very diverse, from
classical to soul.’ Finally, Bigonzetti’s originality really appeals
to him. ‘He does not have one specific style. That is
nice for a dancer, because you’re always doing something
different.’
Thibault selected the casts himself for the three pieces
that he is staging with RDA students. What was his most
important criterion? ‘That’s a good question,’ he responds
thoughtfully. ‘My intuition, I think. Not the technical capacities
of the candidates. All of the students here have
good technical skills. They receive a very broad education,
and they get a lot of practical experience in school
performances and by doing internships with dance companies.
When I work with them, I am really not aware that
I am working with students.’
Together with his approximately twenty colleagues from
Aterballetto, Thibault dances in at least one hundred
performances per year. ‘I have already been around the
world twice.’ In addition, he stages pieces by Bigonzetti,
as he is currently doing at the Rotterdam Dance Academy
and as he recently did with the National Ballet of China in
Beijing. ‘I think this is really wonderful work,’ says Thibault.
‘It is very fulfilling for me to see dancers on stage doing
things that I have taught them.’
‘Lesgeven is gewoon erg leuk’
Rias Baarda: ‘Ik vind het nog steeds frappant dat mijn voormalige docenten nu mijn collega’s zijn.’
‘I just really like teaching’
Rias Baarda: ‘I still find it remarkable that my former teachers are now my colleagues.’
Twee jaar geleden studeerde
singer-songwriter Rias Baarda
af als popgitarist aan de Rotterdam
Pop Academy van
het Rotterdams Conservatorium,
en nu geeft hij er twee
dagen in de week les. Ook is
hij succesvol met zijn band
2nd Place Driver en diverse
soloprojecten. De laatste tijd
steekt de bard in hem steeds
meer de kop op. Een portret.
Al op de middelbare school was
Rias Baarda (Groningen, 1976)
een troubadour: altijd een gitaar
op zijn rug, altijd in voor
een ironisch, kritisch of gevoelig
liedje. Samen met zijn zonderlinge
sidekick, violist Nikos
Plakas, schreef hij inventieve,
grappige liedjes die het duo van
bonte avonden tot in buurthuizen
en theaters brachten, en
zelfs op het Poetry International
Festival in Rotterdam.
‘Eigenlijk groeide onze samenwerking
vooral uit noodzaak,’
lacht Baarda. ‘In de brugklas
werden we beiden nogal gepest
en dat schept een band.
Hij speelde al viool en gitaar, en
dankzij hem sloeg ik ook aan
het musiceren.’ Het duo werd
ontbonden toen Plakas naar
Griekenland vertrok. ‘Hij speelt
nog steeds. Ik moet hem toch
echt eens opzoeken.’
Aan het eind van zijn middelbareschooltijd
was het conservatorium
nog een onhaalbare
droom. Maar na twee jaar studie
Chinees in Leiden miste Baarda
zijn gitaar en zijn sociale leven,
en werd hij aangenomen op de
vooropleiding jazz in Rotterdam.
Uiteindelijk koos hij voor
pop. ‘Die richting vond ik vrijer.
En de docenten hebben jazzervaring,
waardoor je toch veel
kunt improviseren. Ik voelde me
meteen thuis op de Rotterdam
Pop Academy.’
Met zijn huidige band, 2nd
Place Driver, speelde Baarda op
festivals als Lowlands en Parkpop
en in het voorprogramma
van groepen als Racoon, The
Infadels en Soulwax. De muziek
die hij schrijft voor de
band noemt hij ‘pop-rock met
een electro-twist’. ‘Lekker knallen
met strakke springliedjes.’
De eerste twee platen kregen
lovende kritieken. Het pas opgenomen
nieuwe album Full
Speed Bare Naked brengt twee
keer dezelfde nummers: de helft
elektronisch en de andere helft
akoestisch.
Naast 2nd Place Driver speelt hij
regelmatig in een jazzband, bij
hiphopfunkgroep Urita en in de
band van zanger Joseph Bangura
uit Sierra Leone, die vorig jaar
afstudeerde aan de Rotterdam
Pop Academy.
Baarda neigt steeds meer naar
de jazz en man-met-gitaar-muziek.
Dat de minstreel van weleer
opnieuw de kop opsteekt,
is te merken aan de inhoud van
zijn cd-speler. ‘Ik luister de laatste
tijd veel naar artiesten als
Emiliana Torrini, John Mayer en
Ane Brun, maar ook naar Jesse
van Ruller en John Scofield.’
Meerdere docenten drukten
hun stempel op Baarda’s muziek.
‘Menno Gootjes bijvoorbeeld.
Hij is een soort van
George Benson en Joe Satriani
in één; ik snap niet dat hij niet
bekender is. Met hem heb ik
aardig wat uurtjes zitten jazzen.
Ook Martijn van Agt heeft me
geïnspireerd. Ik ben erg onder
de indruk van hoe hij de muziek
beleeft, als een echte bluesmuzikant.
En hij schrijft geweldige
nummers.’
De jonge gitarist geeft sinds
dit jaar muziektheorie, bandcoaching
en keuzevak gitaar,
‘gitaar voor dummies’, op de
Rotterdam Pop Academy. Vanwaar
die theorie? Baarda: ‘Dat is
een beetje een raadsel. Ik was
vroeger slecht in wiskunde en
natuurkunde, maar muziektheorie
ging er op de een of andere
manier zo in. Tijdens mijn
studie ging ik bijlessen geven
in dat vak, en mijn leerlingen
begonnen ineens allemaal hun
tentamens te halen. Dat bleef
niet onopgemerkt.’
Wat hij zijn studenten vooral
mee wil geven, is gehoorontwikkeling.
‘Dat je een liedje
op de radio hoort, je stemvork
pakt, ontdekt in welke toonsoort
het staat, de akkoorden
uitvogelt en het bij thuiskomst
na kunt spelen. Qua gitaarles
vind ik het belangrijk om studenten
te leren wat zij persoonlijk
nodig hebben. Zo kun je een
metalgitarist ter compensatie
wat jazzblues meegeven of een
zanger leren zichzelf te begeleiden.’
Samen met Ferry Lagendijk is hij
de benjamin van het docentencorps.
‘Wij zijn echt de groentjes.
Ik vind het nog steeds
frappant dat mijn voormalige
docenten nu mijn collega’s zijn.
Dat had ik een paar jaar geleden
niet gedacht.’
Baarda geeft ook twee dagen
in de week les aan de Herman
Brood Academie in Utrecht.
Soms is het wel veel; vier dagen
docent, een succesvolle band
en vele soloprojecten. ‘Maar
onze gitarist is het zakelijke
brein achter 2nd Place Driver,
dus dat loopt gesmeerd. En lesgeven
is gewoon erg leuk.’ Hij
past wel op om niet over de kop
te gaan. Zijn formule? ‘Positief in
het leven staan, je antennes uitzetten
en af en toe rust nemen.
Voor dat laatste trek ik me terug
op mijn bootje in de Biesbosch.’
Two years ago, singer-songwriter
Rias Baarda graduated
as a pop guitarist from the
Rotterdam Pop Academy of
the Rotterdam Conservatoire.
He now teaches there two
days a week. He is also achieving
success with this band 2nd
Place Driver and many solo
projects. Lately, the bard in
him has been emerging.
A portrait.
Rias Baarda (Groningen, 1976)
was already a troubadour during
his years as a secondary
school student: always with a
guitar strapped to his back, always
up for ironic, critical or
sensitive songs. Together with
his eccentric sidekick, violinist
Nikos Plakas, he wrote inventive,
funny songs that the duo
performed during evening performances
in cafes, in neighbourhood
centres and theatres,
and even at the Poetry International
Festival in Rotterdam.
‘Actually our collaboration grew
mainly out of necessity,’ laughs
Baarda. ‘When we were about
13, we were both teased a lot;
that creates a bond. He already
played both violin and guitar,
and thanks to him, I also got
interested in becoming a musician.’
The duo was separated
when Plakas went to Greece.
‘He still plays. I really need to go
and visit him.’
At the end of his secondary
school years, the conservatory
was an unattainable dream. But
after two years of studying Chinese
in Leiden, Baarda missed
his guitar and his social life, and
he was accepted for the jazz
preparatory programme in Rotterdam.
In the end, he chose
pop. ‘I think that pop is freer.
And the teachers have jazz experience,
so you’re still able to
improvise a lot. I felt immediately
at home at the Rotterdam
Pop Academy.’
With his current band, 2nd Place
Driver, Baarda plays in festivals
like Lowlands and Parkpop and
has also opened act for groups
like Racoon, The Infadels and
Soulwax. He calls the music that
he writes for the band ‘pop-rock
with an electro-twist’. ‘Play loud
with great jump songs.’ The first
two records received enthusiastic
reviews. The new album
that has just been recorded, Full
Speed Bare Naked, features the
same songs performed twice:
the first version electric, and the
second acoustic.
In addition to 2nd Place Driver,
he plays regularly with a jazz
band, with the hip-hop funk
group Urita, and in the band of
singer Joseph Bangura from
Sierra Leone, who graduated
last year from the Rotterdam
Pop Academy.
Baarda finds himself tending
more toward jazz and manwith-guitar
music. That the
minstrel of his earlier year is appearing
again is evident if you
take a look at what he listening
to on his CD player. ‘Recently,
I’ve been listening to artists like
Emiliana Torrini, John Mayer and
Ane Brun, but also to Jesse van
Ruller and John Scofield.’
A number of teachers have influenced
Baarda’s music. ‘Menno
Gootjes, for example. He is
a sort of George Benson and
Joe Satriani in one; I don’t understand
why he isn’t better
known. I’ve spent quite a bit of
time with him playing jazz. Martijn
van Agt has also really inspired
me. I am really impressed
with how he experiences music,
as a real blues musician. And he
writes terrific numbers.’
This year, the young guitarist
has begun to teach music
theory, band coaching and guitar
as an elective subject, ‘guitar
for dummies’, at the Rotterdam
Pop Academy. How did he end
up teaching theory? Baarda:
‘That’s a bit of mystery. When I
was younger, I was really bad at
maths and physics, but somehow
music theory went very
well. When I was still a student,
I tutored others in this subject,
and all of my students started to
pass their exams. That didn’t go
unnoticed.’
What he wants to do more than
anything is to help his students
develop their aural skills. ‘You
should be able to hear a song
on the radio, take your tuning
fork, discover the key it’s in, figure
out the chords, and be able
to play it by the time you get
home. In a guitar class, I think
it’s important to teach students
what they personally need. As a
sort of compensation, you can
teach a metal guitarist jazz and
blues, or you can teach a singer
to learn to accompany himself
or herself.’
Together with Ferry Lagendijk,
he is the baby of the teaching
team. ‘We are the youngsters.
I still find it remarkable that my
former teachers are now my colleagues.
A couple of years ago,
I wouldn’t have been able to
imagine that.’
Baarda also teaches two days
a week at the Herman Brood
Academy in Utrecht. Sometimes
it is a lot; four days teaching,
plus a successful band and lots
of solo projects. ‘But our guitarist
is the business brain behind
2nd Place Driver, so that is going
really smoothly. And I just
really like teaching.’ He is careful
not to overwork himself. His secret?
‘A positive attitude toward
life, keep your antennae up,
and, once in a while, rest. When
I need to do that, I retreat to my
boat in the Biesbosch.’
‘Turnen is wat ik ben’
Studenten van de opleiding
Rotterdam Circus Arts verzorgen
meerdere malen een
optreden tijdens de zogenoemde
after party na de
nieuwste voorstelling van
Cirque du Soleil, Varekai. Eerstejaarsstudent
Tarik Rammo
droomt ervan om op het podium
te staan in een show van
datzelfde Cirque du Soleil.
Tarik is 19 jaar. Hij komt oorspronkelijk
uit Libanon, maar
woont al jaren in Zwijndrecht,
vlak bij Rotterdam. Tarik studeert
niet alleen, hij turnt ook,
op nationaal niveau nog wel.
Hij heeft op Nederlandse kampioenschappen
al aardig wat
medailles gewonnen.
‘Turnen kent verschillende specialisaties:
vloer, paard, ringen,
brug, rekstok en sprong,’ vertelt
Tarik. ‘Ik heb niet één bepaald
specialisme; ik vind alles leuk,
ben meer een allrounder. In iedere
specialisatie heb ik medailles
gewonnen.’ Tarik traint drie
tot vier keer per week, steeds
drieëneenhalf uur lang. ‘Zo bereid
ik me voor op wedstrijden.
Ik hoop in de selectie te komen
voor de Europese Kampioenschappen
in 2009, en misschien
ook wel in die voor de Wereldkampioenschappen
van 2010,
die in Rotterdam plaatsvinden.
De Olympische Spelen? Als ik
daar ooit zou staan, is echt een
droom die uitkomt.’
Hoe is hij bij het circus terecht
gekomen? Tarik: ‘Na het zien van
een show van Cirque du Soleil
was ik verkocht. Vanaf toen wist
ik wat ik wilde gaan doen: het
circus in, werken bij Cirque du
Soleil! Ik wil niet meer alleen
optreden voor een jury om een
medaille te winnen. Ik wil dat
mensen naar me komen kijken,
omdat ze vermaakt willen
worden en omdat ze het knap
vinden wat ik kan. Daarom heb
ik me aangemeld bij Rotterdam
Circus Arts. Via deze opleiding
hoop ik meerdere specialisaties
te kunnen ontwikkelen. Ik ben
nu bezig met de overgang van
ringen naar straps, banden met
lussen eraan. Op die manier heb
je veel meer mogelijkheden.
Je kunt je er bijvoorbeeld helemaal
indraaien. Daarnaast vind
ik de cross-overs erg interessant:
circus met dans en theater.’
Contacten bij Cirque du Soleil
heeft Tarik al. ‘Ik heb een paar
jaar geleden een video naar
Cirque du Soleil gestuurd en
mocht auditie komen doen.
Toen gaven ze aan dat ik nog
niet goed genoeg was. Nu stuur
ik hen regelmatig een video om
mijn vorderingen te laten zien.
Binnenkort hoop ik weer auditie
te kunnen doen. Als je eenmaal
door de audities heen bent,
kom je in een bestand terecht.
Als ze een artiest zoeken, kunnen
ze contact met je opnemen.’
Waarom wil hij zo graag werken
bij Cirque du Soleil? Tarik:
‘Cirque du Soleil maakt mooie
shows, waar veel acrobatiek in
zit. Het is allemaal heel theatraal
en mysterieus, en iedereen kent
het. Bovendien kan ik op die
manier van mijn passie – turnen
– mijn beroep maken. Want turnen
is wat ik ben.’
Tarik Rammo:
‘Cirque du Soleil maakt mooie
shows, waar veel acrobatiek in zit.’
Tarik Rammo:
‘Cirque du Soleil produces beautiful
shows that are so rich in acrobatics.’
‘Gymnastics is what I am’
Students in the Rotterdam
Circus Arts programme
present several performances
during the so-called after
party, after the newest Cirque
du Soleil performance,
Varekai. First year student
Tarik Rammo dreams of
standing on the stage in a
Cirque du Soleil show.
Tarik is 19 years old. He comes
originally from Lebanon,
but he has lived for years in
Zwijndrecht, near Rotterdam.
Tarik doesn’t just study, he also
competes in gymnastics, at a
national level that is. He already
has won a number of medals in
Dutch championships.
‘Gymnastics has a number of
different events: floor exercise,
pommel horse, still rings, parallel
bars, high bar, and vault,’ says
Tarik. ‘I don’t have one speciality;
I like them all, I’m more like an
all-rounder. I’ve won medals
in all of the different events.’
Tarik trains three to four times
a week, always for three and a
half hours. ‘That is how I prepare
for competitions. I hope to
be selected for the European
Championships in 2009, and
maybe also for the World
Championships in 2010, that
will take place in Rotterdam. The
Olympic Games? If I ever make it
there, it would be a dream come
true.’
How did he end up studying
circus arts? ‘I knew that I wanted
to do it after I had seen a show
of Cirque du Soleil. From that
moment, I knew that I wanted
to join the circus, and work
with Cirque du Soleil! I don’t
want to keep performing alone
in front of a jury to compete
for medals. I want people to
come watch me because they
want to be entertained and
because they think what I can
do is impressive. That is why
I enroled in Rotterdam Circus
Arts. I hope that this programme
will help me to develop more
specialisations. I am now
working on the transition from
still rings to straps, bands with
loops attached. This gives you a
lot more possibilities. You can,
for example, completely turn
inward. I also think that the
possibilities for combining circus
with dance and theatre are
interesting.’
Tarik already has contacts with
Cirque du Soleil. ‘I sent a video a
couple of years ago to Cirque du
Soleil and was invited to come
do an audition. They indicated
then that I wasn’t good enough
yet, so now I regularly send
videos to let them see how I am
progressing. I hope to be able to
do an audition again soon. Once
you’ve completed an audition,
then they add your name to a
file. If they are looking for an
artist, they can get in touch with
you.’
Why is he so intent on working
with Cirque du Soleil? Tarik:
‘Cirque du Soleil produces
beautiful shows that are so rich
in acrobatics. It is so theatrical
and mysterious, and everyone
knows them. And it would be
a way to make my passion –
gymnastics – my career. Because
gymnastics is what I am.’
Duncan McTier is visiting master
Begin 2007 was hij voor het
eerst te gast op het Rotterdams
Conservatorium. Hij verzorgde
toen een masterclass
voor studenten van de Rotterdam
Classical Music Academy.
Dat is alle partijen zo goed
bevallen dat hij voortaan drie
keer per jaar les komt geven,
als zogenoemde visiting master.
Hij, dat is Duncan McTier,
één van ’s werelds meest vooraanstaande
contrabassolisten
en -docenten.
‘In de tijd dat ik begon als contrabassist,
kon je overal werken,
als je maar een instrument en
een auto had. Anno 2008 is die
situatie helemaal anders. Er zijn
vandaag de dag veel meer goede
contrabassisten actief. Wat
nu telt, is zuiver spelen, met een
goede klank. Overigens moet
een contrabassist in ieder geval
gevoel hebben voor diepte en
harmonie. Dat is belangrijk, omdat
wij niet zo veel melodieën
spelen.’
Aldus Duncan McTier. En als iemand
het kan weten, dan is hij
het wel. Hij trad op als solist in
meer dan twintig landen, met
een groot aantal beroemde orkesten
en dito dirigenten. Na
een studie wiskunde aan de
universiteit van Bristol begon
McTier bij het BBC Symphony
Orchestra in Londen zijn muzikale
carrière. Hij was toen
20 jaar. ‘Mijn vader was leraar
wiskunde en dat wilde ik ook
worden. Dat is er nooit van gekomen,
maar ik geef nu met
ontzettend veel plezier les aan
contrabassisten.’ Dat doet hij op
onder meer de Royal Academy
of Music in Londen, de muziekafdeling
van de Züricher Hochschule
der Künste in Winterthur
en de Escuela Superior de Música
Reina Sofía in Madrid.
Nee, zelf heeft hij nooit les gehad
op een conservatorium. ‘Ik
was 14 jaar toen ik contrabas
ging spelen. Daarvoor speelde
ik viool. Ik heb les gehad van
allerlei musici, maar in totaal
slechts vijftien lessen van contrabassisten.’
Lachend: ‘Mij zul
je dan ook nooit horen zeggen:
zo deed mijn docent het en jij
moet het ook zo doen.’ Weer serieus:
‘Ik ben altijd nieuwsgierig
geweest naar mooie klanken.
Als ik iets moois hoor, denk ik:
zo wil ik het ook doen.’
McTier, in 1954 geboren in
Stourbridge, Worcestershire,
was van 1977 tot en met 1984
contrabassolist bij het in Amsterdam
gevestigde Nederlands
Kamerorkest. ‘Van mijn jaren
in Nederland heb ik echt genoten.’
Daarna keerde hij terug
naar Engeland, om zich te gaan
richten op een carrière als solist,
kamermusicus en docent.
Sindsdien maakte hij voor radio,
televisie en platenmaatschappijen
meer dan vijftig solo-opnames.
Op dit moment is hij lid
van de Britse kamermuziekensembles
Fibonacci Sequence en
Nash Ensemble. ‘Ik speel graag
kamermuziek. Nog elke dag
leer ik van mijn collega’s,’ vertelt
McTier. Leren doet hij ook nog
steeds als hij les geeft, zegt hij.
In Londen, Winterthur en Madrid.
En in Rotterdam, waar hij
sinds kort visiting master is aan
de Rotterdam Classical Music
Academy.
Wat kan hij betekenen voor studenten?
McTier: ‘Ik heb heel veel
ervaring als solist. Ik weet wat
ervoor nodig is om publiek te
laten genieten van de klank van
een contrabas. Dat is mijn specialiteit.
Verder probeer ik studenten
beter te laten studeren
door hen meer na te laten denken,
bijvoorbeeld over ritme.
Overigens is het voor studenten
gewoon wel eens goed om een
bekend verhaal te horen uit de
mond van iemand anders dan
hun eigen docent.’
Duncan McTier:
‘Ik ben altijd nieuwsgierig
geweest naar mooie klanken.’
Duncan McTier:
‘I have always been curious
about beautiful sounds.’
In the beginning of 2007, he
visited the Rotterdam Conservatoire
for the first time,
to give a master class to students
from the Rotterdam
Classical Music Academy. Everyone
judged the experience
to be such a success that he
will now come three times a
year to teach as a so-called
visiting master. He is Duncan
McTier, one of the world’s
most renowned double bass
soloists and teachers.
‘In the days when I started playing
the double bass, you could
find work everywhere, as long
as you had an instrument and
a car. In 2008, the situation has
completely changed. Today,
there are many more good
double bass players. What is
important now is being able to
produce a pure, clear sound.
The double bassist also needs
to have a good feeling for depth
and harmony. That is important,
because we don’t play the melody
very often.’
That is what Duncan McTier
says, and if anyone should
know, he should. He has performed
as a soloist in more than
twenty countries with a great
number of famous orchestras
and conductors. After studying
mathematics at the University
of Bristol, McTier began his
musical career by playing with
the BBC Symphony Orchestra
in London. He was 20 years old
at the time. ‘My father taught
mathematics, and that is what
I also wanted to do. That didn’t
work out, but today I am really
enjoying teaching double
bass players.’ McTier teaches at
the Royal Academy of Music in
London, the music department
of the Züricher Hochschule der
Künste in Winterthur and the Escuela
Superior de Música Reina
Sofía in Madrid.
No, he never studied at a con-
servatoire. ‘I was 14 when I
started playing the double bass.
Before that, I played the violin.
I took classes with many different
musicians, but in total only
fifteen classes with double bass
players.’ He laughs: ‘You will
never hear me say: that’s how
my teacher did it, and that is
how you must do it, too.’ Then
he is serious again: ‘I have always
been curious about beautiful
sounds. If I hear something
beautiful, I think: I want to be
able to do that, too.’
McTier, born in 1954 in Stourbridge,
Worcestershire, played
double bass with the Nederlands
Kamerorkest, based in
Amsterdam, from 1977 until
1984. ‘I really enjoyed my years
in the Netherlands.’ After that,
he returned to England to concentrate
on a solo career, chamber
music and teaching. Since
then, he has made more than
fifty solo recordings for radio,
television and record companies.
At the moment, he is a
member of the British chamber
music ensembles Fibonacci Sequence
and Nash Ensemble. ‘I
really enjoy playing chamber
music. I still learn something
every day from my colleagues,’
tells McTier. He also still learns
when he teaches, he says. In
London, Winterthur and Madrid.
And now in Rotterdam, where
he recently became a visiting
master at the Rotterdam Classical
Music Academy.
What can he teach his students?
McTier: ‘I have a lot of solo experience.
I know what is needed in
order for the public to enjoy the
sounds of a double bass. That is
my specialty. Beyond that, I try
to help the students study more
productively by getting them
to think, for example, about
rhythm. It is also a good thing
for students to hear familiar advice
from someone else besides
their regular teacher.’
Myrthe (left) and Imre van Opstal. ‘Everyone in the dance world knows Rotterdam!’
Myrthe & Imre van Opstal
Myrthe (net 20) en Imre (bijna
19) – respectievelijk derde-
en eerstejaarsstudente aan
de Rotterdamse Dansacademie
– komen uit een gezin van
in totaal vier kinderen – drie
meisjes en een jongen – en ze
dansen allemaal. ‘Als mensen
dat horen, zeggen ze: jullie
zullen wel worden gepusht
door jullie ouders,’ aldus Imre.
Myrthe: ‘Maar dat is niet waar.
We mogen helemaal zelf bepalen
wat we doen.’
Myrthe en Imre van Opstal zijn
geboren in Blerick (gemeente
Venlo), in de provincie Limburg.
Hun ouderlijk huis staat inmiddels
in het naburige dorp
Velden. Vader en moeder Van
Opstal wonen daar sinds begin
dit schooljaar met nog maar
één van hun vier kinderen,
Xanthe (15), de jongste dochter.
Myrthe is inmiddels al ruim
twee jaar het huis uit, Imre en
haar broer, Marne (17), vertrokken
afgelopen zomer. Het drietal
bewoont samen de begane
grond en de eerste verdieping
van een gerenoveerde woning
in Rotterdam. Myrthe en Imre
nemen elke schooldag de tram
richting het gebouw van de
Rotterdamse Dansacademie,
aan het Kruisplein, een ritje van
amper vijf minuten, hun broer
stapt dagelijks op de trein naar
Den Haag, waar hij eerstejaarsstudent
is aan het Koninklijk
Conservatorium.
Myrthe, de oudste van het stel,
heeft al een hele danscarrière
achter de rug, zou je kunnen
zeggen. Ze zal 4 of 5 jaar zijn
geweest toen ze met dansen
begon, vertelt ze. Al kort daarna
vond ‘de juffrouw’ dat Myrthe
auditie zou moeten doen in
Venlo, bij de vooropleiding van
ArtEZ Dansacademie. ‘Eigenlijk
was ik daarvoor nog veel te
jong, maar kennelijk vonden ze
me zo getalenteerd dat ze me
niet wilden laten lopen,’ lacht
Myrthe. ‘Ik heb daarom wel een
aantal groepen twee keer moeten
doen.’ Ze doorliep de vooropleiding
van basisschool tot
en met middelbare school, en
toen was het moment daar om
een dansvakopleiding te kiezen.
‘Hoewel het mijn droom is om
te dansen bij een modern gezelschap,
koos ik voor de Nationale
Balletacademie in Amsterdam.
Ik wilde mijn ballettechniek opschroeven.’
Imre begon iets later in haar leven
met dansen dan haar oudste
zus; ze reed eerst een paar
jaar paard. ‘Af en toe ging ik met
Myrthe mee naar haar dansles
en huppelde dan wat mee. Ik
was een fanatieke sporter en
twijfelde of ik niet bijvoorbeeld
wilde gaan voetballen of tennissen.
Uiteindelijk ben ik ook
in Venlo terechtgekomen, via
de coördinator van die vooropleiding.’
Dansen is helemaal haar ding,
zegt Imre. Ze wist op de middelbare
school al dat ze ‘later’
zou gaan kiezen voor de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie, vertelt
ze enthousiast. ‘Deze school
staat bekend als één van de
beste opleidingen op het gebied
van hedendaagse dans.’
Ze was dan ook ‘superblij’ dat
ze werd aangenomen. ‘Yes!’ Ze
heeft het ‘hartstikke’ naar haar
zin in Rotterdam. ‘Ik hoop dat ik
door mag naar het tweede jaar.’
Imre kijkt al uit naar de lessen
Cunningham: ‘Graham en Laban
vind ik ook leuk, maar dat is
voor mij echt dansen.’
In haar eerste jaar in Amsterdam
deed Myrthe auditie voor een
contract bij Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.
Gezien haar leeftijd – ze
was pas 18 jaar – kwam ze daar
niet voor in aanmerking. Maar
haar werd wel een stageplaats
aangeboden. Die stage zou aanvankelijk
een paar maanden
duren, maar uiteindelijk danste
Myrthe een heel seizoen/
schooljaar bij het gezelschap
van artistiek leider Ed Wubbe. ‘Ik
heb in bijna 40 voorstellingen
meegedaan. Geweldig vond ik
het!’ Ze wilde graag blijven, en
Wubbe wilde haar ook houden,
aldus Myrthe, maar er was geen
plaats.
Hoewel ze in Amsterdam veel
had geleerd, besloot Myrthe
vervolgens niet terug te gaan.
Ze koos voor de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie. ‘De naam en
faam van deze opleiding kende
ik natuurlijk al. Iedereen in de
danswereld kent Rotterdam! Je
studeert hier repertoire in van
bekende choreografen, en je
krijgt lessen ballet, improvisatie
en verschillende moderne technieken,
ook van gastdocenten.
Ik vind het fijn hier. Ik voel me
hier op mijn plek.’
’s Avonds nemen de zusjes Van
Opstal samen met hun broer
aan de eettafel de dag door.
‘Omdat wij niet zo ver hoeven
te reizen, maken wij meestal het
eten klaar,’ vertelt Imre. ‘Marne
wast dan af. Poetsen en zo doen
we om beurten. Het gaat ons
heel goed af. We hebben nog
nooit ruzie gehad.’ Myrthe: ‘Ik
vind het prettig dat ik nu een
huis deel met mijn zus en broer.
Ik heb twee jaar alleen gewoond,
een jaar in Amsterdam
en een jaar in Rotterdam. Dit is
vertrouwd. En we snappen elkaar,
want we dansen alle drie.’
Myrthe (just 20) and Imre
(almost 19) van Opstal –
third- and first-year students,
respectively, at the Rotterdam
Dance Academy – come
from a family of four children
– three girls and a boy – and
they all dance. ‘When people
hear that, they say: surely you
are pushed by your parents,’
says Imre. Myrthe: ‘But that’s
not true. We all have the freedom
to decide what we want
to do.’
Myrthe and Imre van Opstal
were born in Blerick (municipality
of Venlo), in the Dutch
province of Limburg. Their
parental home is now in the
nearby village of Velden. Since
the beginning of this school
year, father and mother Van
Opstal live there with only the
youngest of their four children,
daughter Xanthe (15). Myrthe
left home about two years ago,
Imre and her brother, Marne
(17), followed last summer. The
three of them live together on
the ground and first floors of a
renovated house in Rotterdam.
Myrthe and Imre take the tram
every day in the direction of
the Rotterdam Dance Academy,
at Kruisplein, scarcely a fiveminute
ride, while their brother
takes the train to The Hague,
where he is a first-year student
at the Royal Conservatoire.
Myrthe, the older of the couple,
has already had a dance
career, you could say. She must
have been 4 or 5 years old when
she began dancing, she says.
Not long after that, her teacher
thought that Myrthe should do
an audition in Venlo, at the preparatory
programme of ArtEZ
School of Dance. ‘Actually, I was
still far too young for that, but
apparently they thought that I
was so talented that they didn’t
want to let me get away,’ laughs
Myrthe. ‘For that reason, I had
to repeat a couple of years of
the programme.’ She attended
dance preparatory programme
while she was in primary and
secondary school, and then it
was time to choose a dance
academy. ‘Though my dream is
to dance with a modern company,
I chose the National Ballet
Academy in Amsterdam. I
wanted to improve my ballet
technique.’
Imre began to dance a bit later
than her older sister; first, she
did horseback riding for a couple
of years. ‘Occasionally, I went
with Myrthe to her dance classes,
and I skipped and jumped
along. I was fanatic about sport
and wondered if I didn’t want
to play football or tennis, for example.
Finally, I also ended up in
Venlo, through the coordinator
of the preparatory programme.’
Imre says that she just loves
dancing. She already knew
when she was in secondary
school that she would choose
to attend the Rotterdam Dance
Academy ‘later’, she says enthusiastically.
‘This school is known
as one of the best contemporary
dance programmes.’ She
was ‘super happy’ when she was
accepted. ‘Yes!’ She really loves it
in Rotterdam. ‘I hope that I can
continue with the second year.’
Imre is already looking forward
to taking Cunningham classes:
‘I like Graham and Laban too,
but for me Cunningham is really
dancing.’
In her first year in Amsterdam,
Myrthe did an audition for
a contract with Scapino Ballet
Rotterdam. She was just 18
years old and thus too young
to be accepted in the company.
But she was offered an internship.
Initially, the it was to last
a couple of months, but in the
end, Myrthe danced for an entire
season/school year with
artistic director Ed Wubbe’s
company. ‘I danced in nearly 40
performances. I thought it was
wonderful!’ She really wanted to
stay, and Wubbe wanted to hold
on to her, according to Myrthe,
but there was no place in the
company.
Although she had learned a lot
in Amsterdam, Myrthe decided
not to return. She chose instead
to attend the Rotterdam Dance
Academy. ‘Of course, I already
knew about the name and fame
of this programme. Everyone in
the dance world knows Rotterdam!
You learn repertoire here
by well-known choreographers,
and you take classes in ballet,
improvisation, and different
modern techniques, also from
guest teachers. I really like it
here. I feel like this is the place
for me.’
In the evening, the Van Opstal
sisters and their brother discuss
the day at the dinner table.
‘Because we don’t have far to
travel, we usually do the cooking,’
says Imre. ‘Marne does the
washing up. We take turns with
cleaning and so on. It is going
really well with us. We haven’t
had a fight yet.’ Myrthe: ‘I really
like sharing a house with my sister
and brother. I lived alone for
two years, one year in Amsterdam
and one year in Rotterdam.
This feels familiar. And we understand
each other, because all
three of us dance.’
‘De informatie zweeft hier rond’
Lucas van Merwijk: ‘Het Rotterdams Conservatorium
onderscheidt zich door de breedte.’
‘Information is just in the air here’
Lucas van Merwijk: ‘The Rotterdam Conservatoire
distinguishes itself by its breadth.’
Al ruim twintig jaar doceert
topdrummer Lucas van Merwijk
aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium.
Hij is één van
de grondleggers van het huidige
slagwerkonderwijs aan
de studierichting Latin/Latin
jazz/Braziliaans van de Rotterdam
World Music Academy.
Zijn eigen groepen, waaronder
de Cubop City Big Band
en Drums United, genieten internationaal
bekendheid. Een
portret.
‘Het is bijna goed,’ zegt hij tegen
de student. ‘Alleen is het
hier rukutuku placúplacúplacú
plaplapla-plaplaplatá. Het zijn
geen triplets, maar zestienden.’
Lucas van Merwijk, die zeven
jaar achtereen werd gekozen tot
beste jazzdrummer van de Benelux
en zes maal tot beste fusiondrummer,
is aan het werk in
het World Music & Dance Centre
(WMDC), het thuis van de Rotterdam
World Music Academy.
‘Belangrijk is dat je de solo’s
niet alleen uitschrijft, maar ook
naspeelt, anders vergeet je ze
weer. Je moet ze echt kauwen
en verteren, dan blijven ze bij je.’
De leider van internationaal
geroemde bands als de Cubop
City Big Band, Van Merwijks Music
Machine en Drums United
is één van de vormgevers van
de huidige slagwerkopleiding
van de studierichting Latin/Latin
jazz/Braziliaans. ‘Neem jezelf
op als je repeteert,’ adviseert hij
zijn student. ‘Dat deed ik vroeger
ook. Soms denk je dat je het
goed doet en dan blijkt het niet
zo te zijn. Zo word je je eigen
docent.’
Die gedrevenheid tekent Van
Merwijk (De Bilt, 1961), die ooit
begon als pop- en punkdrummer.
Eenmaal in aanraking gekomen
met de poliritmische
Cubaanse muziek reisde hij naar
het eiland af en ging, zonder de
taal te spreken, bij AfroCubadrummer
Oscarito Valdés in de
leer – zoon van Irakere-percussionist
Oscar Valdés. ‘Ik heb een
sterk anker in de pop, jazz en
de Cubaanse muziek,’ vertelt
hij. ‘Later zijn er Afrikaanse en
Spaanse muziek bij gekomen,
maar dit is mijn basis.’
Van Merwijk speelt in een groot
aantal bands, zoals Drumix –
met Senegalees Aly N’Diaye
Rose – en Nueva Manteca – met
andere docenten van het Rotterdams
Conservatorium. Aan
alles werkt hij even geïnspireerd.
‘Dit jaar krijgt de Cubop
City Big Band de geweldige
bassist Andy Gonzalez uit New
York te gast en doen we een
Tito Puente-tribuut. Met Drums
United geven we zo’n 80 theaterconcerten.
En kaval-speler
Theodosii Spassov verbindt zich
met Van Merwijks Music Machine.
Spassov is echt een fantastische
artiest.’
Als een jongleur houdt hij de
vele projecten in de lucht. ‘Ik
houd van de afwisseling. Maar
het is ook uit praktische overweging:
met de Big Band kun je
niet het hele jaar werken, die is
te groot,’ zegt hij. ‘Het is een gedoe
om alles georganiseerd te
krijgen. Ik ben nu repertoire aan
het bedenken voor 2011. Vroeger
was ik gewoon een drummertje,
nu ben ik een cultureel
ondernemer. Ik moet mensen
aansturen, casten en produceren.
Dat vraagt meer verantwoordelijkheid,
maar geeft ook
meer voldoening.’
Ook in het buitenland is Van
Merwijk geen onbekende naam.
‘In Nederland ben je natuurlijk
snel uitgespeeld. Met Drums
United gaan we dit jaar naar
Servië, Bulgarije, Cyprus, Duitsland
en Zwitserland. En met de
Big Band gaan we naar Suriname,
Colombia en hopelijk ook
naar Miami. Ja, in Amerika kennen
ze ons wel. Als Cubop een
nieuwe plaat uitbrengt, komt
die altijd hoog in de New Yorkse
charts.’
Twintig jaar geleden begon Van
Merwijk les te geven in drums
en timbales. ‘Mijn excuses aan
de studenten van toen,’ lacht hij,
‘want ik was veel te jong. Het
moet vreselijk geweest zijn. Ik
was gestopt met mijn opleiding
en speelde alleen maar; didactisch
had het weinig te betekenen.’
Inmiddels geeft hij twee
dagen per week les. Hij ontwikkelde
een vaste structuur van
20 basisritmes. ‘Bij congadocent
Nils Fischer krijgen ze er nog
eens zo veel.’
Van Merwijk vindt het belangrijk
dat studenten geloofwaardig
en vrij leren musiceren. ‘Dat
ze op het niveau kunnen spelen
van het land waar de muziek
vandaan komt, zo authentiek.
En dat ze niet alleen kopiëren,
maar op zo’n manier met
muziek bezig zijn dat het voor
henzelf een avontuur is, dat ze
er iets in kwijt kunnen.’ Ook anderszins
drukt hij zijn stempel
op de opleiding. Zo was Nils Fischer
eens zijn student. Evenals
onder anderen Claus Tofft, Niti
Ranjan Biswas en Dirk Hauptmann.
Van Merwijk geeft ook les op
het conservatorium van Amsterdam.
‘Het Rotterdams Conservatorium
onderscheidt zich
door de breedte,’ meent hij. ‘Het
is een bruisende school met een
hoog niveau wereldmuziekonderwijs
waar studenten uit de
hele wereld op afkomen. Ook
het WMDC helpt mee: de informatie
zweeft hier rond. Studenten
pikken de hele dag dingen
op, zoals die workshop vandaag
van Trilok Gurtu.’
The great drummer Lucas van
Merwijk has taught at the
Rotterdam Conservatoire for
some twenty years. He is one
of the originators of the current
percussion curriculum in
the study programme Latin/
Latin jazz/Brazilian of the Rotterdam
World Music Academy.
His own groups, including
the Cubop City Big Band and
Drums United, enjoy international
fame. A portrait.
‘It is almost good,’ he says to the
student. ‘Just here, it’s rukutuku
placúplacúplacú plaplapla-plaplaplatá.
They are not triplets,
they are sixteenths.’ Lucas van
Merwijk, who was chosen as
the Benelux’s best jazz drummer
for seven years in a row,
and six times as the best fusion
drummer, is working today with
students in the World Music
& Dance Centre (WMDC), the
home of the Rotterdam World
Music Academy. ‘It’s important
that you not only write out the
solos, but also that you repeat
them and play them by ear, otherwise
you’ll forget them again.
You need to really chew them
up and digest them, then they’ll
stay with you.’
The leader of internationally famous
bands like Cubop City Big
Band, Van Merwijks Music Machine,
and Drums United, is one
of the people who designed the
current percussion curriculum
in the study programme Latin/
Latin jazz/Brazilian. ‘Record
yourself while you’re rehearsing,’
he advises his student. ‘I used
to do that, too. Sometimes, you
think that you’ve done it well,
and it turns out not to be the
case. That’s how you become
your own teacher.’
That passion is typical of Van
Merwijk (De Bilt, 1961), who
originally began as a pop and
punk drummer. But once he had
been exposed to poly-rhythmic
Cuban music, he traveled
to the island, without speaking
the language, to study with
Afro-Cuban drummer Oscarito
Valdés, the son of Irakere percussionist
Oscar Valdés. ‘I am
strongly anchored in pop, jazz
and Cuban music,’ he says. ‘Later,
I was also influenced by African
and Spanish music, but this is
my foundation.’
Van Merwijk plays in a number
of bands, like Drumix – with
Senegalese Aly N’Diaye Rose –
and Nueva Manteca – with other
teachers from the Rotterdam
Conservatoire. He works on
everything with equal inspiration.
‘This year, the amazing
bassist Andy Gonzalez from New
York will join the Cubop City Big
Band as a guest, and we’re going
to do a tribute to Tito Puente.
Drums United will be giving
about 80 theatre concerts. And
kaval player Theodosi Spassov is
going to join Van Merwijks Music
Machine. Spassov is a fantastic
artist.’
Similar to a juggler, Van Merwijk
loves having a lot of projects
going on at once. ‘I love the variation
and change. But there are
also practical considerations:
with the Big Band, you can’t
work for the whole year, it is too
big,’ he says. ‘It is a big production
to get everything organised.
I am now trying to think
about repertoire for 2011. I used
to be just a drummer, now I am
a cultural entrepreneur. I have
to guide people, to cast and
produce. That demands a lot of
responsibility, but it is also more
satisfying.’
Van Merwijk’s name is not unknown
abroad. ‘In the Netherlands,
you have pretty quickly
done it all. Drums United this
year will be going to Serbia,
Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany and
Switzerland. And the Big Band
will be going to Suriname, Colombia
and hopefully also to
Miami. Yeah, they know us in
America, too. When Cubop
brings out a new record, it always
does very well on the New
York charts.’
Twenty years ago, Van Merwijk
began to teach drums and timbales.
‘I apologise to those early
students,’ he laughs, ‘because
I was really too young then. It
was probably pretty awful. I had
stopped my studies and was
only performing; I knew very
little about teaching.’ Now he
teaches twice a week. He has
developed a fixed structure of
20 basic rhythms. ‘They also get
that many from Nils Fischer, the
conga teacher.’
Van Merwijk thinks it is important
for students to learn to play
genuinely. ‘They should be able
to play music like it is played in
the place that it comes from, it
should be that authentic. They
shouldn’t just copy, they should
be engaged with music as if it
were an adventure, something
that allows them to be expressive.’
He also makes his mark on
the study programme in other
ways. Nils Fischer was once his
student. So were Claus Tofft, Niti
Ranjan Biswas and Dirk Hauptmann.
Van Merwijk also teaches at
the conservatoire in Amsterdam.
‘The Rotterdam Conservatoire
distinguishes itself by its
breadth,’ he believes. ‘It is a lively
school with a very high level of
education in the area of world
music. Students come here from
all over the world. The WMDC
also helps: information is just
in the air here. Students pick
up things all day long, such as
the workshop today with Trilok
Gurtu.’
In 2005 nam Roberto Beltran
het initiatief tot de oprichting
van het Rotterdam Young Ensemble.
Dat bestaat nu uit 28
jonge musici, van wie er 26
student zijn aan de Rotterdam
Classical Music Academy van
het Rotterdams Conservatorium.
‘Wat we op school leren,
brengen we in de praktijk in
een onafhankelijk professioneel
ensemble.’ Ook in 2008
staan weer uitvoeringen op
het programma.
Roberto Beltran Zavala studeerde
compositie en contrabas in
Mexico City, de miljoenenstad
waar hij op 14 juni 1978 was geboren.
En hoewel hij daar niet
voor had doorgeleerd, stond hij
als dirigent voor een uit bijna
dertig musici bestaand kamermuziekorkest.
Om dat werk goed
te doen, zo realiseerde hij zich,
moest hij toch echt les gaan nemen.
Dat deed hij dan ook. En
toen hij zijn leermeester in actie
zag voor het Mexico City Philharmonic
Orchestra, wist hij het
zeker: dirigeren, dat wil ik de
rest van mijn leven blijven doen.
Maar niet in Mexico City. ‘I can
do better.’ Veel landgenoten studeerden
compositie in Nederland,
wist hij. Daarom kwam hij
naar Rotterdam. Hij nam ook een
kijkje op conservatoria in Frankrijk
en Duitsland.
‘De plek waar ik me het beste
voelde, was op het Rotterdams
Conservatorium,’ zegt Roberto.
‘Ik wist gewoon dat ik me hier
goed zou kunnen ontwikkelen.’
In 2005 begon hij aan zijn studie
orkestdirectie bij Hans Leenders;
inmiddels is hij derdejaarsstudent.
‘Ik ben ontzettend blij dat
ik toen mijn gevoel heb gevolgd,’
vertelt hij nu. ‘Ik leer heel erg
veel van Hans Leenders. Niet alleen
op het gebied van directie,
maar ook over van alles wat erbij
komt kijken, bijvoorbeeld hoe
je met bepaalde situaties om-
gaat. Ik bewonder mijn docent.
Dankzij hem ben ik zo veel beter
geworden. En ik word nog altijd
beter.’
De tweede reden waarom Roberto
zo blij is met zijn keuze
voor Rotterdam, is het feit dat
hier de mogelijkheid bestaat
om een ensemble op te richten.
‘En dat niet alleen… De school
steunt het Rotterdam Young Ensemble
door infrastructuur ter
beschikking te stellen: repetitieruimte,
instrumenten en het
transport daarvan. Als we het nu
niet doen, kan het nooit meer,
dacht ik twee jaar geleden.’ De
meeste leden van het ensemble
zijn vierdejaarsstudent of student
aan de Voortgezette Opleiding
Muziek dan wel de Master
of Music. ‘Wij spelen muziek uit
alle stijlperioden,’ aldus Roberto,
‘maar hedendaagse muziek
heeft onze speciale aandacht.
Onze programma’s, die altijd in
onderling overleg tot stand komen,
zijn een combinatie van kamermuziek
en orkestrale werken.’
Roberto is dan wel de initiatiefnemer
en dirigent van het Young
Rotterdam Ensemble, hij is niet
de baas, zegt hij. ‘Wat we als ensemble
bereiken, is het resultaat
van de samenwerking van alle
leden. We vormen een hechte
groep; we voelen ons allemaal
verantwoordelijk voor elkaar.’ Het
ensemble is onderbracht in een
stichting en heeft nu een productiemanager.
De medewerking aan de Malta
International Music Festival
Composers Competition, eind
april 2008, beschouwt Roberto
als voorlopig hoogtepunt in
het bestaan van het Rotterdam
Young Ensemble. Verder is het
gezelschap dit seizoen nog te
zien en te horen in Rotterdam
(13 maart in de kerk van de
Doopsgezinde Gemeente en 15
mei in Lantaren/Venster) en in
Delft (16 mei in de Universiteitsbibliotheek
TU Delft).
‘Wat we als ensemble bereiken, is het resultaat
Roberto Beltran:
‘What we achieve as an ensemble, is the result
of all our members working together.’
In 2005, Roberto Beltran
founded the Rotterdam Young
Ensemble, a group that now
consists of 28 young musicians,
26 of whom are students at
the Rotterdam Classical Music
Academy of the Rotterdam
Conservatoire. ‘We take what
we learn in school and put it
into practice in an independent,
professional ensemble.’
More performances are scheduled
in 2008.
Roberto Beltran Zavala studied
composition and double bass in
Mexico City, the megacity where
he was born on June 14, 1978.
While he had not specifically
trained for the job, he found himself
standing before a chamber
music orchestra of nearly thirty
musicians. To lead an orchestra
well, he realised that he needed
professional training. He began
to study conducting, and when
he saw his teacher in action with
the Mexico City Philharmonic
Orchestra, he knew it for sure:
conducting, that is what I want
to spend my life doing. But not
in Mexico City. ‘I can do better.’
He knew that many other Mexicans
came to the Netherlands to
study composition. That is what
led him to Rotterdam. He had
also looked at conservatoires in
France and Germany.
‘The place I felt best was at the
Rotterdam Conservatoire,’ says
Roberto. ‘I just knew that I would
be able to develop really well
here.’ In 2005, he began his study
of orchestral direction with Hans
Leenders; he is now in his third
year. ‘I am really extremely happy
that I listened to my intuition,’ he
says now. ‘I learn so much from
Hans Leenders. Not only in the
area of direction, but also about
everything that goes along with
it, like how to deal with different
kinds of situations. I admire my
teacher. Thanks to him, I have improved
tremendously. And I keep
learning and getting better.’
The second reason that Roberto
is so happy with his decision to
study in Rotterdam is the fact
that the possibility existed to
form an ensemble here. ‘And not
just that… The school supports
the Rotterdam Young Ensemble
by providing us with access to
infrastructure: rehearsal space,
instruments, and the transport of
the instruments. I thought two
years ago: if we don’t do it now,
we’ll never get another chance.’
Most of the members of the ensemble
are fourth year students
or students in the Postgraduate
Programme in Music or the Master
of Music. ‘We play music from
all of the different stylistic periods,’
says Roberto, ‘but we pay
special attention to contemporary
music. We make collaborative
decisions about the content
of our programmes; they include
both chamber and orchestral
works.’
Roberto is the founder and
the conductor of the Rotterdam
Young Ensemble, but he is
not the boss, he says. ‘What we
achieve as an ensemble, is the
result of all our members working
together. We are a strong and
close-knit group; we all feel responsible
for each other.’ The ensemble
now exists formally as a
foundation and has a production
manager now.
Roberto considers performing
at the Malta International Music
Festival Composers Competition,
at the end of April 2008, as the
high point thus far in the existence
of the Rotterdam Young
Ensemble. This season the ensemble
will also perform in Rotterdam
(March 13, in the church
of the Doopsgezinde Gemeente,
and May 15 in Lantaren/Venster)
and in Delft (May 16 in the University
Library, TU Delft).
Van midden januari tot begin
mei 2008 danst Dance Works
Rotterdam in ruim 30 theaters
in Nederland de voorstelling
Rotterdam/New York. De twee
steden uit de titel spelen een
belangrijke rol in het leven van
choreograaf Ton Simons, oudstudent
van de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie en, sinds 1999,
de artistiek leider van Dance
Works Rotterdam.
‘You will love New York and New
York will love you.’ Dat zei Lucas
Hoving begin jaren ’70 van de
vorige eeuw tegen Ton Simons.
Hoving, die in The Big Apple
had gedanst in de gezelschappen
van Martha Graham en José
Limón, was destijds directeur
van de Rotterdamse Dansacademie,
Simons studeerde daar.
‘Lucas had helemaal gelijk,’ lacht
Simons nu. ‘Ik heb uiteindelijk
meer dan 20 jaar in New York gewoond
en gewerkt.’
Zijn tijd op de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie herinnert Simons
(1954) zich als ‘een bijzonder creatieve
en inspirerende periode’.
‘Mijn eerste stuk heb ik in die
tijd gemaakt, met toestemming
van Lucas,’ vertelt hij. ‘Al als kind
was ik geïnteresseerd in het maken
van dingen. Ik wilde beeldhouwer
worden. Pas toen ik in
het plakboek van mijn nichtjes
plaatjes zag van balletvoorstellingen,
realiseerde ik me dat er
ook kunstenaars zijn die dingen
maken met levende wezens, met
mensen.’
Simons werd geadviseerd auditie
te gaan doen bij de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie. Hij werd aangenomen
en rondde de opleiding
in drie jaar af. Vervolgens vertrok
hij voor de eerste keer naar New
York, waar hij lessen ging volgen
bij Merce Cunningham. ‘Met een
beurs die me dankzij inspanningen
van Lucas was toegekend.’
In 1975 kwam Simons terug
naar Rotterdam. Hij was gebeld
door Käthy Gosschalk. Zij had
Werkcentrum Dans opgericht en
vroeg hem of hij danser en choreograaf
bij dit gezelschap wilde
worden. ‘Na drie jaar, in 1978,
ben ik teruggegaan naar New
York. Waarom? Er was nog zo
veel te leren!’ Simons bleef stuk-
ken maken voor Werkcentrum
Dans, en later ook voor de opvolger
daarvan, De Rotterdamse
Dansgroep (1988). Daarnaast
creëerde hij eigen producties,
wat leidde tot de oprichting van
Ton Simons and Dancers. Daarmee
verzorgde hij jaarlijks voorstellingsseries
in New York en
nam hij deel aan internationale
festivals. Hij is in New York gebleven
tot het seizoen 1999-2000,
vertelt Simons. ‘Toen werd ik
door het bestuur van De Rotterdamse
Dansgroep gevraagd of
ik Käthy op wilde volgen.’ Kort
daarna, in 2001, ontstond uit De
Rotterdamse Dansgroep het huidige
Dance Works Rotterdam.
Anno 2008 is New York niet meer
wat het geweest is, aldus Simons.
‘Ballanchine is dood, Cunningham
is oud, de geldkranen
zijn dichtgedraaid… Europa is
veel interessanter dan de VS,
denk ik. De internationale danswereld
kijkt vol bewondering,
en ook met enige afgunst, naar
ons. Wij hebben veel opleidingen
en veel gezelschappen. En
jonge makers krijgen hier volop
kansen.’
Een groot aantal van de dansers
die bij Dance Works Rotterdam
onder contract staan en hebben
gestaan, volgde een opleiding
aan de Rotterdamse Dansacademie.
Simons: ‘Als mij gevraagd
wordt welke dansopleiding ik
aanbeveel, hoef ik geen moment
te twijfelen. Het programma van
de Rotterdamse Dansacademie
besteedt ruimschoots aandacht
aan zowel de technische eisen
die het werkveld aan dansers
stelt als de creativiteit die dansers
dienen te bezitten om eigentijds
repertoire te kunnen
vertolken.’
Simons is blij dat hij het publiek
in Nederland via de voorstelling
Rotterdam/New York werk kan
laten zien van Stephen Petronio
uit New York. ‘Stephen heeft een
wereldwijde reputatie opgebouwd
Ton Simons:
‘When I am asked which dance academy
I recommend, I don’t hesitate for a moment.’
From the beginning of January
to the middle of May 2008,
Dance Works Rotterdam is performing
the piece Rotterdam/
New York in about 30 theatres
in the Netherlands. The two
cities in the title both play an
important role in the life of the
choreographer Ton Simons,
a former student at the Rotterdam
Dance Academy and,
since 1999, the artistic director
of Dance Works Rotterdam.
‘You will love New York, and New
York will love you.’ That is what
Lucas Hoving told Ton Simons
in the beginning of the 1970s.
Hoving, who had danced in the
Big Apple with the companies of
Martha Graham and José Limón,
was at the time the director of
the Rotterdam Dance Academy,
where Simons was a student.
‘Lucas was totally right,’ Simons
laughs today. ‘I ended up living
and working in New York for
more than 20 years.’
Simons (1954) remembers his
time at the Rotterdam Dance
Academy as a ‘wonderfully creative
and inspiring period’. ‘I choreographed
my first piece at this
time, with Lucas’s permission,’
he says. ‘Already as a child, I was
interested in making things. I
wanted to be a sculptor. Then
I looked at my cousins’ scrapbooks
and saw pictures of ballet
performances. That is when I realised
that there are artists who
make things with living beings,
with people.’
Simons was advised to do an audition
at the Rotterdam Dance
Academy. He was accepted and
completed the programme in
three years. After that, he left for
New York for the first time, where
he took classes with Merce Cunningham.
‘I had received a scholarship,
thanks to Lucas’s efforts
on my behalf.’
In 1975, Simons came back to
Rotterdam. He got a telephone
call from Käthy Gosschalk. She
had founded Werkcentrum Dans
and asked him if he wanted to
be a dancer and choreographer
with the company. ‘After three
years, in 1978, I returned to New
York. Why? There was still so
much to learn!’ Simons contin-
ued to choreograph pieces for
Werkcentrum Dans, and later
for the company’s successor, De
Rotterdamse Dansgroep (1988).
He also created his own productions,
which led to the creation
of Ton Simons and Dancers. With
his company, he gave yearly performance
series in New York and
also took part in international
festivals. He stayed in New York
until the 1999-2000 season, says
Simons. ‘Then I was asked by the
board of De Rotterdamse Dansgroep
if I wanted to succeed
Käthy.’ Shortly after that, in 2001,
Dance Works Rotterdam grew
out of De Rotterdamse Dansgroep.
In 2008, New York is no longer
what it once was, believes Simons.
‘Ballanchine is dead, Cunningham
is old, the money is
drying up… Europe is much
more interesting than the US, I
think. The international dance
world looks at us with admiration
and also with some envy.
We have so many professional
training academies and companies.
Young choreographers here
get lots of opportunities.’
A large number of the dancers
who currently have – or in the
past had – contracts with Dance
Works Rotterdam studied at the
Rotterdam Dance Academy. Simons:
‘When I am asked which
dance academy I recommend, I
don’t hesitate for a moment. The
programme of the Rotterdam
Dance Academy devotes ample
attention to developing the
technical skills demanded by our
profession as well as to nurturing
the creativity that dancers need
to possess in order to perform in
contemporary repertoire.’
Simons is pleased that he is
able to give Dutch audiences
the chance to see the work of
Stephen Petronio from New York
in the performance Rotterdam/
New York. ‘Stephen has built an
international reputation as a pioneering
choreographer. His choreographies
are among the best
that are being created in the US
today.’
Waar willen deze ambitieuze
studenten over enkele jaren staan?
Muziektheater:
een dubbelportret
Muziektheaterstudenten bewandelen
in Rotterdam de
rijke en spannende breedte
van het hedendaagse muziektheaterveld.
In het eerste
studiejaar volgen alle studenten
hetzelfde programma, in
het tweede jaar kiest iedere
student een specialisatie: modern
muziektheater of musical.
Een dubbelportret van
twee ambitieuze studenten
met een verschillende specialisatiekeuze,
maar met dezelfde
toekomstdromen.
Aafke Kloppenburg (19) is tweedejaarsstudente
aan de Muziektheateracademie
(MTA) van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium.
‘Ik heb de vooropleiding van
de MTA gevolgd,’ vertelt Aafke.
‘Toen ik een paar eindexamenvoorstellingen
van muziektheaterstudenten
had gezien, was ik
verkocht. Dit sprak me zo aan!
Dit was anders dan ik gewend
was.
Joey:
‘Toen ik aan de opleiding begon,
gold voor mij: musical,
daar ga ik helemaal voor. Mijn
hart ligt bij musical. Het is een
prachtige manier van theater
maken en het laagje entertainment
zorgt ervoor dat het een
breed publiek trekt. Maar eenmaal
hier op school ontdekte
ik dat er niet een hele strikte
grens bestaat tussen modern
theater en musical. De twee
specialisaties ontmoeten elkaar
in de theaterwereld continu, en
zo is dat ook hier op school. En
uit die ontmoetingen ontstaan
vaak de mooiste voorstellingen.
Hier in Rotterdam wordt niet in
hokjes gedacht, er wordt meer
verdieping gezocht. Rotterdam
loopt wat dat betreft erg vooruit
op andere opleidingen in
Nederland.’
‘De MTA reageert op de wensen
vanuit het werkveld,’ aldus Aafke.
‘Er wordt steeds meer van je
verwacht dat je eigen inbreng
hebt en initiatief toont.’ Joey
reageert: ‘Tijdens je opleiding
leer je een eigen beeld van en
visie op muziektheater te creeren.
Daar hebben we straks,
als we zijn afgestudeerd, ongetwijfeld
heel veel aan.’ Aafke:
‘Wij hebben als tweedejaarsstudenten
nu nog niet zoveel
contact met het werkveld. Dat
komt pas vanaf het derde jaar,
als je audities gaat doen. Maar
we gaan wel veel naar voorstellingen
met z’n allen, bijvoorbeeld
de Internationale Keuze
van de Rotterdamse Schouwburg.
Door veel voorstellingen
te zien, ontwikkel je een eigen
kijk op theater maken. In het
werkveld is tegenwoordig ook
steeds meer interactie tussen
verschillende kunstdisciplines,
zoals beeldende kunst, toneel,
film, dans en muziek. Niets is
gek genoeg. Je moet je niet geremd
voelen. Alles is al gedaan,
maar eigenlijk ook weer niet,
omdat iedereen de dingen anders
benadert. Vanuit dat idee
werken we.’
‘Sinds ik hier studeer, kijk ik zo
anders naar musicals en andere
theatervoorstellingen,’ zegt
Joey. ‘Je krijgt hier al heel snel
een getraind oog. Vroeger was
alles mooi wat ik op het toneel
zag, nu zie ik dat heel anders.’
Aafke beaamt dat: ‘Je ziet nu inderdaad
méér. Soms is dat ook
wel jammer, omdat je niet meer
zo onbevangen kunt genieten.
Je bent kritischer.’
De mooiste musicals die Joey
heeft gezien, zijn Last Five Years
en Wicked. Joey: ‘Dat zijn de
eerste musicals die in me opkomen,
ik vind het moeilijk om te
kiezen, hoor.’ Aafke: ‘Wat ik heel
erg leuk vind, is het acteurscollectief
Wunderbaum, een
Vlaams-Nederlands gezelschap
met een basis in Gent en een
basis in Rotterdam. Zij brengen
theater op een andere manier
en op andere locaties, waardoor
er ook sneller een ander
publiek op af komt.’
Waar willen deze ambitieuze
studenten over enkele jaren
staan? Joey: ‘In een musical natuurlijk!
Maar dat niet alleen,
ik wil zo veel mogelijk doen en
zo veel mogelijk leren. Op die
manier hoop ik mijn werkveld
zo breed mogelijk te maken.
Als performer wil ik op zoek
blijven naar verdieping in mijn
werk.’ Aafke droomt van een
zo afwisselend mogelijke toekomst,
waarbij locatietheater
wellicht een grote rol speelt.
‘In november hebben wij met
de tweedejaarsstudenten een
buitenvoorstelling gespeeld bij
station Blaak, hier in Rotterdam;
bewegingstheater was dat.
Veel factoren heb je dan niet in
de hand, zoals het weer en de
mensen die voorbij lopen. Fantastisch
vind ik dat!’
Music theatre students in Rotterdam
have the opportunity
to experience the rich and exciting
breadth of the entire
field of contemporary music
theatre. In the first year of the
programme, all students study
the same curriculum, while in
the second year, each student
chooses a specialisation: modern
music theatre or musical.
A double portrait of two ambitious
students who made different
specialisation choices
but who have the same dreams
for the future.
Aafke Kloppenburg (19) is a
second-year student at the Muziektheateracademie
(MTA) of
the Rotterdam Conservatoire. ‘I
did the preparatory programme
of the MTA,’ says Aafke. ‘When I
had seen a couple of final examination
performances of music
theatre students, I was absolutely
sure. This just appealed to me
so much! It was also something
different than what I was used
to. I was in a musical group, and
we performed existing musical
repertoire. At the MTA, it is really
about your own uniqueness
and individuality. Students are
trained to become unique individual
artists. The programme offers
so much, and you just have
to take what is offered and make
it your own in order to further
your own personal development.
At the MTA, you are really challenged
and developed to the
absolute extent of your potential,
both in terms of developing
your craft and your own unique
qualities.’
Joey Mensink (21) is also a
second-year student. Before he
came to the MTA, he performed
in musicals and theatre pieces
at the amateur level. ‘When I began
this programme, it was all
about musicals for me. That was
where my heart was. I think it is a
wonderful way to create theatre,
and the nature of the entertainment
ensures that you attract a
fairly broad audience. But when
I got to school here, I discovered
that there is not a rigid separation
between modern theatre
and musicals. The two specialisations
constantly come into
contact with each other in the
theatrical world, and that is also
the case here at school. And very
often the most beautiful performances
grow out of the meetings
between these two types of
theatre. Here in Rotterdam, we
don’t think in rigid categories.
We search for more depth. In that
sense, Rotterdam is very progressive
and ahead of the times compared
with other programmes in
the Netherlands.’
‘The MTA responds to demands
from the professional world,’ says
Aafke. ‘There is always more expected
of you, in terms of contributing
your own input and
showing initiative.’ Joey reacts:
‘During this programme, you
learn to create your own image
and vision of music theatre. That
will undoubtedly serve us well
later, when we have graduated.’
Aafke: ‘As second-year students,
we don’t have that much contact
yet with the professional world.
That really begins to happen in
the third year, when you do auditions.
But we all often go together
to performances, for example,
to the Internationale Keuze van
de Rotterdamse Schouwburg.
By seeing a lot of performances,
you develop your own perspective
on theatre. Professionally,
there is also a lot of interaction
these days between different artistic
disciplines, like the visual
arts, theatre, film, dance and
music. Nothing is too strange.
You can’t let yourself feel constrained.
Everything has already
been done, and at the same time,
it hasn’t been done yet, because
everyone approaches things differently.
That is the idea that we
work from.’
‘Since I’ve been studying here, I
look at musicals and other theatre
performances with such
different eyes,’ says Joey. ‘You develop
a trained eye very quickly
here. It used to be that I thought
everything I saw on stage was
beautiful, but now I see it really
differently.’ Aafle agrees: ‘Indeed,
now you see more. Sometimes,
that’s too bad, because you can
no longer just enjoy things. You
become a lot more critical.’
The most beautiful musicals that
Joey has seen are Last Five Years
and Wicked. Joey: ‘Those are the
first musicals that I think of, but
I think it is difficult to choose.’
Aafke: ‘What I really like is the
Wunderbaum collective. It is a
Flemish-Dutch group of actors
that have home bases in both
Gent and Rotterdam. They create
theatre in a different way and
in different locations, and each
performance attracts a different
public.’
Where do these ambitious students
hope to be in a few years?
Joey: ‘In a musical, of course!
But not just that. I want to do as
much as possible and to learn as
much as possible. I hope, in that
way, to have really broad professional
experience. As a performer,
I want to keep searching for
more depth in my work.’ Aafke
dreams of a professional future
with a lot of variety; she hopes
that theatrical pieces made for
specific locations will be a big
part of her work. ‘In November,
the second-year students gave
an outdoor performance at Blaak
train station here in Rotterdam; it
was movement theatre. There are
a lot of factors in that situation
that are out of your control, like
the weather and the people who
happen to walk by. I think that is
fantastic!’
