Manuel Araújo,
pianist uit/from
Portugal
Figures/Das Wohltemperierte Clavier. Een kennismaking
met pianist Manuel Araújo (23), student
aan de Voortgezette opleiding Muziek van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium.
When the tour closes on Tuesday, May 1, 2007,
in the Rotterdam Schouwburg, he will have performed
the first fourteen Preludes and Fugues
from Book 1 of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Das
Wohltemperierte Clavier more than thirty times.
Solo, but he isn’t alone on stage al those times.
He accompanies the dancers of Dance Works
Rotterdam in the performance Human Figures/
Das Wohltemperierte Clavier. An introduction
to the pianist Manuel Araújo (23), a student in
the Postgraduate Programme in Music at the
Rotterdam Conservatoire.
Manuel Araújo – voluit Manuel
Esteves de Araújo – werd op 26
februari 1983 geboren in Vila
Nova de Gaia, een kustplaats in
Portugal. Op vijfjarige leeftijd
kreeg hij zijn eerste muziekles,
van Norma Graça-Silvestre.
‘Een heel goede docente,’ aldus
Manuel. ‘Ze gaf me niet alleen
pianoles, maar nam me ook
mee naar concerten, masterclasses
en musea.’ Zo kon het
gebeuren dat Manuel als 11-jarige
door Amsterdam wandelde
– ‘Al die fietsen!’ – en een bezoek
bracht aan onder meer het
Rijksmuseum, de Stopera en het
Concertgebouw. ‘Ik kon me toen
niet voorstellen dat ik ooit in
Nederland zou gaan wonen.’
Aanvankelijk studeerde Manuel
één tot twee uur per week
piano, vertelt hij. Later, vanaf
zijn 14de, liep dat op tot wel
acht uur per dag, zeker als er
weer een concours voor de
deur stond. ‘Verder was ik een
gewone jongen, hoor,’ lacht
hij. ‘Ik zat bij de plaatselijke
voetbalclub en speelde met
vrienden op straat.’ Tot op
18-jarige leeftijd kreeg Manuel
privéles, van Graça-Silvestre en
van Felipe Nabuco Silvestre.
Na het voltooien van de middelbare
school volgde hij een
paar maanden een studie
aan een technische universiteit
in zijn vaderland, daarna
vertrok hij naar Nederland, om
aan de Rotterdam Academy
for Classical Music van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium te
gaan studeren bij Aquiles Delle
Vigne. ‘Ik had hem ontmoet
tijdens een masterclass in Porto,’
vertelt Manuel. ‘Hij stelde me
voor bij hem in Rotterdam te
komen studeren.’
Hoewel hij destijds – Manuel
was 17 jaar – nog niet zeker
wist of hij zijn toekomst wel in
de muziek moest zoeken, zei
hij uiteindelijk ‘ja’ tegen Delle
Vigne. ‘Ik was ervan overtuigd
dat ik nog heel veel van hem
kon leren,’ legt Manuel uit. ‘Met
mijn privéleraren onderhield ik
een vriendschappelijke band en
ik had het gevoel dat dat met
hem ook zou kunnen gebeuren.
En zijn kennis is gigantisch.’
Overigens was Manuel al
door drie universiteiten in de
Verenigde Staten uitgenodigd
om daar te komen studeren. ‘Ik
wilde in Europa blijven; hier ligt
immers de geschiedenis van de
klassieke muziek.’
Zijn keuze is een goede
geweest, weet Manuel. ‘Delle
Vigne heeft me in de juiste
richting geleid. Als ik niet hierheen
was gekomen, had ik nu
heel anders piano gespeeld. Ik
heb geleerd om de techniek in
dienst te stellen van de muziek,
en die techniek niet te gebruiken
als een manier om indruk te
maken. En dankzij Delle Vigne
is mijn beheersing van de klank
sterk verbeterd.’
Afgelopen zomer studeerde
Manuel af. Hij besloot zijn
studie via de Voortgezette
opleiding Muziek in Rotterdam
voort te zetten. ‘Graag blijf ik
studeren met Delle Vigne,’ zegt
Manuel. En hij wil de mastertitel
behalen (het Rotterdams
Conservatorium heeft accreditatie
aangevraagd van de Master
of Music). ‘Zonder mastertitel
mag je in Portugal geen lesgeven
op universitair niveau.’ Want
gaan doen.
Intussen combineert Manuel
– die de afgelopen jaren op
meerdere concoursen de eerste
prijs won – zijn studie met
spelen in de voorstelling Human
Figures/Das Wohltemperierte
Clavier, gemaakt door Ton
Simons, de artistiek leider
van Dance Works Rotterdam.
Vakantie heeft Manuel de
afgelopen zomer niet gehad. ‘Ik
heb drie maanden gerepeteerd,
in m’n eentje, terwijl iedereen
naar het strand ging.’ Das
Wohltemperierte Clavier van
Bach is een fantastisch werk,
maar buitengewoon moeilijk
om te spelen, aldus Manuel.
‘Elke noot eist je volledige concentratie.’
Uiteraard vindt hij het
geweldig dat hij dit mag doen.
‘Ik speel tijdens deze tournee
voor vele honderden mensen,
in onder meer de Rotterdamse
Schouwburg, het Lucent
Danstheater in Den Haag en de
Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam.
Maar voor de première, in
oktober, was ik wel heel erg
gespannen.’
Manuel Araújo – full name
Manuel Esteves de Araújo – was
born on February 26, 1983, in
Vila Nova de Gaia, a coastal
town in Portugal. He had his
first music class when he was
five years old, with Norma
Graça-Silvestre. ‘A very good
teacher,’ says Manuel. ‘She didn’t
just give me piano lessons, she
also took me to concerts, master
classes and museums.’ That is
how Manuel came to stroll the
streets of Amsterdam at the age
of eleven – ‘All those bicycles!’
– and to visit the Rijksmuseum,
the Stopera, and the
Concertgebouw. ‘I couldn’t have
imagined then that I would one
day live in the Netherlands.’
In the beginning, Manuel
studied piano one to two hours
a week, he says. Later, from the
time that he was 14, he was
practicing to eight hours a day,
especially if a competition was
coming up. ‘But otherwise, I was
really a normal boy,’ he laughs.
‘I was a member of the local
football club, and I played with
friends in the street.’ Manuel
took private lessons with Graça-
Silvestre and Felipe Nabuco
Silvestre until he was 18. After
completing secondary school,
he spent a few months at a
technical university in Portugal.
Then he left for the Netherlands,
to study with Aquiles Delle
Vigne at the Rotterdam
Academy for Classical Music of
the Rotterdam Conservatoire.
‘I had met him during a master
class in Porto,’ says Manuel. ‘He
suggested that I come study
with him in Rotterdam.’
At the time – Manuel was 17 –
he didn’t know yet if music was
going to be his future, but he
finally said ‘yes’ to Delle Vigne.
‘I was sure that I could learn a
lot from him,’ explains Manuel.
‘I had a friendly relationship
with my piano teachers, and I
had the feeling that that could
develop with him, too. And
his knowledge is enormous.’
Manuel had also been invited
to come study at three different
universities in the United States.
‘I wanted to stay in Europe; this
is where the history of classical
music is, after all.’
He says that he made a good
choice. ‘Delle Vigne definitely
pointed me in the right direction.
If I hadn’t come here, I’d
be playing the piano very
differently now. I have learned
to use technique to serve the
music, not as a way to impress.
And thanks to Delle Vigne my
control of sound has improved
significantly.’
Manuel graduated last summer.
He decided to continue his studies
in Rotterdam by enrolling in
the Postgraduate Programme
in Music. ‘I want to continue
my studies with Delle Vigne,’
says Manuel. And he wants to
receive a master’s degree (the
Rotterdam Conservatoire has
applied for recognition of the
Master of Music title). ‘Without
a master’s, you can’t teach in
Portugal at the university level.’
He will fight to have a career as
a concert pianist, but he knows
that teaching is something he is
going to do later.
Manuel – who has won first
prizes at several international
competitions in the past years
– is now combining his studies
with performing in the
piece Human Figures/Das
Wohltemperierte Clavier,
choreographed by Ton Simons,
the artistic director of Dance
Works Rotterdam. Manuel didn’t
take a vacation last summer.
‘I rehearsed for three months,
by myself, while everyone else
went to the beach.’ Bach’s Das
Wohltemperierte Clavier is a
fantastic work, but exceptionally
difficult to play, says Manuel.
‘Every note demands your full
concentration.’ Naturally, he
thinks that this is a fantastic
opportunity. ‘On this tour, I get
to play for hundreds of people,
in venues like the Rotterdam
Schouwburg, the Lucent
Danstheater in The Hague,
and the Stadsschouwburg in
Amsterdam. But for the premiere,
in October, I was really
very nervous.’
Dancers who are approaching
the end of their performing
dance careers can receive
support from the Stichting
Omscholingsregeling Dansers
(SOD) in order to prepare
themselves for a second career.
The SOD, a foundation which
provides grants to dancers
for retraining, celebrated its
twentieth anniversary at the
end of September with a festive
gala benefit in the Lucent
Danstheater in The Hague.
During the event, the book Exdansers
bestaan niet (Ex-dancers
don’t exist), in which twenty
dancers tell the stories of their
dance careers and of life after
dance, was presented.
On the occasion of this twentieth
anniversary, the SOD received
a donation from Codarts,
University of Professional Arts
Education. In a letter to the
Codarts Board of Directors, SOD
chairman Rein Douze wrote that
verrassende en ruimhartige donatie’
‘goed kan gebruiken om
scholingen van stoppende dansers
te financieren’. Daarnaast
heeft de gift een belangrijke
symbolische betekenis, vindt
Douze.
‘De initiatiefnemers van de
omscholingsregeling hoopten
destijds met de mogelijkheid
tot omscholen ook het taboe
op het stoppen met dansen
te doorbreken. Men wilde dat
het besef van de eindigheid
van een danscarrière en een
oriëntatie op een leven daarna
tot een normaal onderwerp van
gesprek onder de dansers, dansstudenten
en gezelschappen
zou worden.’ Met haar gift heeft
Codarts te kennen gegeven dit
streven te ondersteunen, aldus
Douze.
‘Het gegeven dat Codarts in
het openbaar laat blijken de
Omscholingsregeling een warm
hart toe te dragen, heeft ons
gesterkt in de overtuiging dat
dansstudenten bij u in goede
handen zijn. De aandacht die in
de opleiding van Codarts wordt
besteed aan de voorbereiding
op de beroepspraktijk (omscholing
incluis) is daar een ander
bewijs van.’
the SOD ‘can put the unexpected
and generous donation to
good use to finance the retraining
and continuing education
of dancers who are ending their
dance careers’. The gift also has
an important symbolic meaning,
says Douze.
‘The founders of the SOD
hoped that the possibility of
training for a new profession
would release dancers from the
taboo of giving up dance. They
wanted to increase awareness
among dancers that a dance
career is finite and that life goes
on afterwards; they wanted this
to become a normal subject of
conversation among dancers,
dance students, and dance companies.’
The gift from Codarts
demonstrates that the university
supports this approach, says
Douze.
‘The fact that Codarts has publicly
demonstrated its support
for the retraining initiative has
strengthened our belief that
dance students are in good
hands at Codarts. The attention
that Codarts pays to preparing
students for the reality of
a career in dance – including
eventual retraining – is proof
of this.’
A Little Night Music
Op 8, 9 en 10 november lieten derde- en vierdejaarsstudenten
van de Muziektheateracademie van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium hun licht schijnen op de
musical A Little Night Music van Stephen Sondheim.
A Little Night Music ging in 1973 op Broadway in
film Smiles of a Summer Night van Ingmar Bergman.
Vocal coach van A Little Night Music was Alberto ter
Doest.
On the 8th, the 9th, and the 10th of November, third-
and fourth-year students of the Muziektheateracademie
of the Rotterdam Conservatoire demonstrated
their talents in the musical A Little Night Music by
Stephen Sondheim. Arlon Luijten, drama teacher and
director: ‘We were experimenting with which dramatic
and theatrical forms can be used to tell the story and,
where necessary, to deepen it. What do or don’t we
care about? Or does the genre make the decisions for
us?’
A Little Night Music opened on Broadway in 1973 and
is based on the 1956 Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of
a Summer Night. Stephen Sondheim is considered
by many to be one of the greatest living composers.
The Muziektheateracademie payed a fitting tribute
to Sondheim by producing one of his musicals in an
original, innovative version.
Koningin Beatrix opent WMDC
Zie www.wmdc.nl.
Queen Beatrix will open WMDC
On Friday afternoon, December the 15th, Queen Beatrix will open the new WMDC (World Music & Dance Centre) in Rotterdam, a meeting
place for music and dance styles from all over the world. This centre brings together education, research and performance. The
WMDC offers local and international musicians and dancers a podium where they can demonstrate their talent for the speciality of
world music and dance.
The goal of the WMDC, located in Rotterdam’s municipal district Delfshaven, is to offer an inspiring environment to stimulate developing talent
(through school projects, courses, professional and postgraduate education), to undertake research (through theoretical development and
establishing an archive and expertise centre), and to encourage performance (‘the stage as a meeting place and laboratory’).
The WMDC building houses the Rotterdam Academy for World Music, Codarts Research & Development, the Codarts professorships, the SKVR
(Stichting Kunstzinnige Vorming Rotterdam), and the Stichting WMDC, just like the departments Finance and Personnel & Organisation, and the
Central Student Administration (CSA) of Codarts.
Diverse (musical) cultures are the source of inspiration for all contemporary music. In Rotterdam, you’ll find a wealth of (musical) cultures which
all need a place to call their own. Local cultures have a huge impact on global culture, and vice versa. Briefly stated, those were the underlying
assumptions that inspired the creation of the WMDC. The centre aspires to become a meeting place for local musicians and dancers, and for
the audiences that they want to reach. The WMDC showcases what is going on in world music and dance in Delfshaven,
in Rotterdam and in other Dutch cities.
The WMDC is an initiative of Codarts in cooperation with SKVR. Support from the World Programme of the Delfshaven municipal district,
as well as funding from the European Union and the city of Rotterdam, have made the centre possible.
From December the 9th till the 16th in the WMDC a varied opening programme takes place. See www.wmdc.nl.
De passie van
The passion of
Ben Bergmans
Ben Bergmans teaches jazz dance and is also a
mentor at the Rotterdam Dance Academy. If there
is one word that you’d use to describe him, it is passion.
He is especially passionate about dance, in
particular modern jazz dance. As a result, it would
have been difficult for two recently published
books not to mention his name. The Antwerp-born
Bergmans also recently took part in the IVieme
Forum International de Danse Jazz in Paris – as a
participant and teacher.
Nederlandse jazzdans. ‘Dit boek is een absolute must
voor iedereen die iets om deze kunstvorm geeft,’ zegt
Ben Bergmans, één van de personen die in Jazzdans.nl
aan het woord komen. Enkele andere namen: Henny
Kamerman en Glenn van der Hoff, Rick Atwell, Donald
McKayle, Lynn Simonson en Matt Mattox. Natuurlijk
besteedt het boek ook aandacht aan de (inmiddels
verdwenen) groepen Jazz Extension Dance Theater en
Djazzax. Bergmans was vijftien jaar lang als repetitor,
choreograaf en docent betrokken bij laatstgenoemd
gezelschap.
disciplines heen: ballet, tango, salsa, capoeira, jazzdans,
Afrikaanse dans, buikdans, paaldansen, clipdance,
volksdans, hiphop, spirituele dans, trancedance
enzovoort.
Vlaamse dansautoriteit Pol Van Assche.
is bijzonder informatief. Voor mij was het met betrekking
tot bepaalde nieuwe dansvormen zelfs een
eye-opener.’
Jazz dance did not really blossom in the Netherlands
until after the Second World War. Many dancers,
choreographers and teachers had to fight to ensure
that this dance form received the recognition that it
deserved in Dutch theatre dance. Marga Douma-Alta
spoke with scores of people involved in jazz dance
both in the Netherlands and abroad for her book
Jazzdans.nl. Their personal stories amply illustrate how
hard various generations have had to work to secure
recognition for Dutch jazz dance. ‘This book is an absolute
must for everyone who cares about this art form,’
says Ben Bergmans, one of the people interviewed
for Jazzdans.nl. A few of the other names include:
Henny Kamerman and Glenn van der Hoff, Rick Atwell,
Donald McKayle, Lynn Simonson and Matt Mattox.
The book naturally also deals with groups like Jazz
Extension Dance Theater and Djazzax which no longer
exist. Bergmans was involved with the latter group for
fifteen years as a rehearsal coach, choreographer and
teacher.
Iedereen kan dansen (Everyone can dance) is the title
of a book published in Belgium that, according to Ben
Bergmans, ‘tries to get as many Flemish people dancing
(again) as possible.’ It offers a kaleidoscopic treatment
of dance history and different dance styles and
disciplines: ballet, tango, salsa, capoeira, jazz dance,
African dance, belly dancing, pole dancing, clip dancing,
folk dance, hip-hop, spiritual dance, trance dance,
and the list goes on. Publicist Stefaan Van Laere was
guided in writing Iedereen kan dansen by the Flemish
dance authority Pol Van Assche. Bergmans, who is
described in the book as a jazz dance phenomenon,
says: ‘This publication, which is illustrated with many
colourful photographs, is especially informative. Even
for me, it was a real eye-opener as far as some of the
new dance forms are concerned.’
From October 28th through November 3rd, the fourth
biennial Forum International de Danse Jazz took place
in Paris. Ben Bergmans took part again, along with
about 400 others. In the studios of Rick Odums, he
participated in workshops, heard lectures, watched
demonstrations, and taught a class to a large group
of enthusiastic dancers. He also got to know ‘possible
new guest teachers’ in the areas of jazz dance
and trend forms for the Rotterdam Dance Academy,
including Wayne Barbaste, James Carles and Catherine
Grouet. ‘These people have combined contemporary
dance, African dance and jazz dance to develop a
completely original style and methodology.’ Bergmans
also met French dancers and dance students who
are interested in coming to the Rotterdam Dance
Academy. ‘The name and fame of our school have
definitely made their way to Paris.’ Thanks in part to
Bergmans’ passion.
Studenten positief over Codarts
Students are positive about Codarts
Studenten zijn tevreden over
de dansacademie en het
conservatorium van Codarts,
Hogeschool voor de Kunsten.
Dat blijkt uit onafhankelijke
onderzoeken onder
studenten. De resultaten zijn
gepubliceerd in het jaarlijkse
themanummer Onderwijs van
het weekblad Elsevier en de
Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs
2006-2007.
Volgens studenten is de
Rotterdamse Dansacademie
(RDA) de beste dansopleiding in
Nederland. Ook het Rotterdams
Conservatorium (RC) scoort
goed. Rotterdam behoort met
Arnhem en Amsterdam tot de
drie beste conservatoria van
Nederland, aldus de studenten.
De studenten van de RDA hebben
veel waardering voor de
inhoud van de opleiding, en het
niveau van de opleiding wordt
erg hoog geacht. De Keuzegids
Hoger Onderwijs stelt vast dat
de organisatie in Rotterdam
staat als een huis: ‘ondanks dat
er dertig nationaliteiten door
elkaar heen lopen, lukt het goed
de studenten te informeren
over hun rechten en plichten
en allerlei praktische zaken.
(…) Ook over de gebouwen
en voorzieningen zijn de
Rotterdammers te spreken.’
Vincent Assink, zakelijk manager
van de RDA, is verheugd over
de resultaten. ‘De lat ligt hoog
bij ons; we vragen veel van de
studenten. Het is goed dat zij
onze aanpak waarderen. De resultaten
zijn te danken aan alle
inspanningen die de docenten
en medewerkers verrichten om
onze studenten op te leiden tot
excellente dansers.’
Het RC scoort goed in de
jaarlijkse studentenenquête van
Elsevier. Studenten geven het
RC een 7.3. Zij zijn zeer te spreken
over de inrichting van het
onderwijs en de kwaliteit van de
lessen. Op deze punten scoort
het RC als beste. Faciliteiten en
organisatie scoren voldoende,
maar met een 6.4 blijft het RC
achter bij het gemiddelde.
George Wiegel, directeur van
het RC, ziet de uitslag vooral
als een waardering voor de
grote inzet van docenten en
medewerkers. ‘In de organisatie
hebben we de afgelopen
jaren flinke stappen vooruit
gezet. Het is prettig te lezen dat
studenten dat ook zien en laten
merken. Het onderwijsprogramma
is grondig herzien. We mogen
met elkaar erg trots zijn
dat we nu als beste uit de bus
komen. Dit is een steun in de
rug. En geeft extra energie voor
de komende jaren.’
Students are satisfied with
the dance academy and the
conservatoire of Codarts,
University of Professional
Arts Education. That is the
conclusion which emerges
from independent research
among students, the results
of which have been published
in the annual education issue
of the weekly magazine
Elsevier and in the Keuzegids
Hoger Onderwijs 2006-2007.
According to students, the
Rotterdam Dance Academy
(RDA) is the best dance programme
in the Netherlands.
The Rotterdam Conservatoire
(RC) also scores well; in addition
to Arnhem and Amsterdam,
Rotterdam is rated one of the
three best conservatoires in the
country, according to students.
RDA students think especially
highly of the content and level
of the dance programme. The
Keuzegids (a comparative
guide to higher education in
the Netherlands) notes that the
organisation of the RDA is very
solid: ‘despite the fact that the
school has a diverse student
population with thirty different
nationalities, the students are
kept well informed of their
rights and obligations with
regard to all sorts of practical
matters. (…) There is also high
praise for the buildings and
facilities in Rotterdam.’
Vincent Assink, the administrative
director of the RDA, is
pleased with the results. ‘We
set the bar high. We ask a lot
of the students. It is wonderful
that they value our approach.
We owe these very favourable
results to the efforts of our
teachers and staff to educate
the students to become excellent
dancers.’
The RC received a positive
evaluation in Elsevier’s research
among students. Students give
the RC a 7.3. They are especially
enthusiastic about the way the
design of the programme and
the quality of their classes. The
RC received the best scores on
these points. Facilities and organisation
received satisfactory
scores, although the RC scored
under the average with a 6.4.
George Wiegel, director of the
RC, believes that the results
reflect an appreciation for the
enormous effort made by faculty
and staff. ‘In recent years, we
have taken big steps forward as
an organisation. It is gratifying
to read that students perceive
that. The educational programme
has been fundamentally
revised. We should all feel proud
that we are doing so well competitively.
This is very encouraging
and will give us extra energy
in the coming years.’
Expert meeting community arts
Op 12 december a.s. organiseert
het lectoraat Community
Arts van Codarts, Hogeschool
voor de Kunsten zijn eerste expert
meeting. Centraal staat de
vraag wat community artists
moeten doen (en nalaten) om
succesvol te kunnen werken in
een omgeving die behoorlijk
kan afwijken van de traditionele
plekken waar kunst wordt
gemaakt.
Sinds oktober 2005 heeft
Codarts een lector Community
Arts, namelijk Peter van den
Hurk. Zijn uitgangspunt is dat
een goede community artist niet
alleen een artistiek hoogstaand
kunstwerk tot stand kan brengen,
maar ook in staat is om dit
kunstwerk toegankelijk te maken
voor mensen die niet vanzelfsprekend
in kunst geïnteresseerd
zijn. Aan het lectoraat zijn inmiddels
een assistant-lector en een
kenniskring toegevoegd.
Eén van de taken van het lectoraat
is er zorg voor te dragen
dat studenten zich in de nabije
toekomst kunnen bekwamen
in community arts. Om een
gedegen studieprogramma neer
te kunnen zetten, is het nodig
met elkaar overeenstemming
te bereiken over wat een community
artist nu precies moet
kennen en kunnen. De eerste
expert meeting van het lectoraat
is aan deze vraag gewijd.
Experts, dat wil zeggen kunstenaars
die hun sporen hebben
verdiend in het opzetten van
projecten waarbij de deelname
van niet-kunstenaars onontbeerlijk
is, laten kort iets zien van hun
werk. Een panel van observanten
stelt aanvullende vragen en
geeft achteraf schriftelijk commentaar.
Tussen de bijdragen
van de kunstenaars door vinden
visuele presentaties plaats van
community arts projecten.
Ook is er een optreden van de
Antwerpse theatergroep Sering.
Omdat deze expert meeting
eigenlijk een openbare kenniskringbijeenkomst
is, speelt
het publiek op deze dag de rol
van toehoorder. Maar in de koffie-,
thee- en lunchpauzes wordt
iedereen van harte uitgenodigd
met de experts, de observanten
en het overige publiek in discussie
te gaan.
De deelnemende kunstenaars
zijn (in volgorde van presentatie):
Bart Deuss (Don’t hit mama),
Ben Bergmans (kenniskring,
dans), Bart Suèr (Roots & Routes),
Hans Lein (kenniskring, theater),
Els Dietvorst (beeldend kunstenaar),
John Wooter (Kunst Onder
Andere), Carlo Balemans (kenniskring,
muziek), Jeanne van
Heeswijk (beeldend kunstenaar),
Stefan van Hees (kenniskring,
theater), Mia Grijp (Theater
Sering), Donna Risa (Stuttheater)
en Arlon Luyten (kenniskring,
muziektheater).
De observanten zijn: Ton Bevers
(hoogleraar Eramus Universiteit
Rotterdam), Hans van Manen
(hoogleraar Rijksuniversiteit
Groningen), Piet Elenbaas
(Stichting Kunstzinnige Vorming
Rotterdam), Eugène van Erven
(universitair docent Universiteit
Utrecht), Marijke Hoogenboom
(lector Amsterdamse Hogeschool
voor de Kunsten), Rineke
Smilde (lector Hanzehogeschool
Groningen) en Sandra Trienekens
(onderzoeker Eramus
Universiteit Rotterdam).
De expert meeting vindt plaats
in het WMDC (World Music
& Dance Centre), Pieter de
Hoochweg 125 in Rotterdam.
De dag begint om 10.00 uur met
een inloop. Het programma,
inclusief lunch en afsluitende
borrel, start om 10.30 uur en
duurt tot 19.00 uur. De voertaal
is Nederlands. Wie deze dag wil
bijwonen, dient zich uiterlijk 11
december te hebben aangemeld
via een e-mail aan lectoraatcommunityarts@codarts.nl.
On December 12th, the
Community Arts professorship
of Codarts, University of
Professional Arts Education,
has scheduled its first expert
meeting. The meeting has
been organized to address the
issue of what community artists
must do (and avoid doing)
in order to function successfully
in environments that are
often quite different than the
traditional places where artists
do their creative work.
Since October 2005, Peter van
den Hurk has been the Codarts
professor of Community Arts. He
believes that a good community
artist should not only be able
to create high quality artistic
work, but should also be able
to make the art accessible for
people who might not typically
be interested in art. An assistant
professor and a research group
have also been added to the
Community Arts professorship.
One of the professorship’s tasks
is to ensure that students in the
near future can specialize in
community arts. In order to set
up a comprehensive programme
of study, the teachers and artists
who are involved need to reach
a consensus about what a community
artist must know and be
able to do. The professorship’s
first expert meeting is devoted
to exploring this issue.
Experts, artists who have a track
record in setting up projects
in which the participation of
non-artists was essential, will
present short excerpts of their
work. A panel of observers will
ask additional questions and will
provide written comments afterwards.
In between the artists’
presentations, visual displays of
community arts projects will be
shown. There will also be a performance
by the Antwerp-based
theatre group Sering.
Peter van den Hurk. Foto / photo Wijnand Schouten.
Because this expert meeting is
actually a public meeting of the
research group, the audience
plays the role of listener. But
during the coffee, tea and lunch
breaks everyone is invited to
enter into discussion with the
experts, the observers and each
other.
The participating artists are (in
order of appearance): Bart Deuss
(Don’t hit mama), Ben Bergmans
(research group, dance), Bart
Suèr (Roots & Routes), Hans
Lein (research group, theatre),
Els Dietvorst (visual artist), John
Wooter (Kunst Onder Andere),
Carlo Balemans (research group,
music), Jeanne van Heeswijk
(visual artist), Stefan van Hees
(research group, theatre), Mia
Grijp (Theater Sering), Donna
Risa (Stuttheater) en Arlon
Luyten (research group, musical
theatre).
The observers are: Ton Bevers
(professor Eramus University
Rotterdam), Hans van Manen
(professor University of
Groningen), Piet Elenbaas
(Stichting Kunstzinnige Vorming
Rotterdam), Eugène van Erven
(university lecturer Universiteit
Utrecht), Marijke Hoogenboom
(professor Amsterdam School of
the Arts), Rineke Smilde (professor
Hanze University Groningen)
and Sandra Trienekens
(researcher Eramus University
Rotterdam).
The expert meeting will take
place in the WMDC (World
Music & Dance Centre), Pieter de
Hoochweg 125, in Rotterdam.
The doors open at 10:00 in the
morning. The programme, which
includes lunch and a cocktail
hour to close the day, begins at
10:30 and lasts until 19:00. The
official language for the day is
Dutch. If you are interested in attending,
you must send an email
no later than December 11th
Richard Bona in het/the WMDC in Rotterdam. Foto/photo Wijnand Schouten.
Op woensdag 15 november
jl. was basgitarist Richard
Bona (Kameroen) te gast bij
Codarts, Hogeschool voor de
Kunsten. Hij verzorgde een
clinic voor studenten van
de Rotterdam Pop Academy
(RPA), de Rotterdam Jazz
Academy en de Rotterdam
Academy for World Music
(studierichting Latin/Latin
Jazz/Braziliaans) en trad met
hen op. Desmond Haneveer,
docent van de RPA, doet verslag.
Over gemorste koffie en
comfortable playing.
‘I haven’t played like this for
fifteen years,’ vertrouwt Richard
Bona ons toe. Zijn effectapparatuur
werkt niet op 220 volt en
zijn transformator ligt nog thuis.
Niet getreurd, gewoon basgitaar
inpluggen en spelen. Maar
eerst koffie! Is er koffie? Nee?
Automaat kapot? In afwachting
van Het Bruine Goud begint
Bona maar vast te spelen. En
meteen is die magie er. Hij zingt
onversterkt, wat de intimiteit
van de muziek ten goede komt.
We worden getrakteerd op een
soort huiskamerconcert. In de
handen van Bona is de basgitaar
een veelzijdig instrument. Hij
kan keihard funken, loodzwaar
grommen en lieflijk spelen.
Vooral in combinatie met zijn
falset ontstaat er iets bijzonders.
In een stampvol lokaal in het
WMDC (World Music & Dance
Centre) gaf bassist extraordinair
internaliseren. Door te zingen
geef je het lichaam een soort
muscle memory. De muzikale
cultuur van Kameroen staat in
het teken van story telling en
daarbij is zang een vereiste.
Voor Bona zijn zingen en bas
spelen dan ook onlosmakelijk
met elkaar verbonden. Hij vindt
het jammer dat in de westerse
wereld muzikanten zo weinig
zingen. Je wordt er een betere
muzikant van.
Daarna gaat hij wat dieper in
op zijn basspel en vraagt een
student mee te spelen. Die stoot
prompt de koffie van Bona om.
‘You knocked over my coffee!’
koffie morst. Tegen de student:
‘I thought it was your coffee. I
wanted to get you back.’ Het zijn
deze kleine grapjes die voor een
uitermate prettige sfeer zorgen.
Toch komen er tal van onderwerpen
voorbij in de clinic:
positiewisselingen, pijn tijdens
het studeren (‘Lijden hoort niet
in muziek thuis.’), dansen, Jaco
Pastorius, het verschil tussen
gitaar en basgitaar, liedjes
schrijven en muziek maken in
verschillende stijlen.
Volgens Bona moet je er altijd
voor zorgen dat je comfortable
bent. Niet alleen in de muziek,
maar in het hele leven. Wanneer
je iets moet spelen en je voelt
je daar niet goed bij: niet doen!
Aldus Bona. Nooit forceren.
Maar wat doe je dan wanneer
je iets probeert te spelen wat
steeds maar niet lukt? Ah,
dat is een uitdaging. Het valt
inderdaad op hoe relaxed Bona
de meest complexe licks speelt;
alsof het geen enkele moeite
kost.
En dan, na ruim anderhalf uur
en een stukje driestemmige publiekszang,
is het alweer voorbij.
Richard Bona bleek niet alleen
een groot musicus, maar ook
een groot mens. Hij weet constant
een link te leggen tussen
muziek en de maatschappij en
de rol van de muzikant daarin.
Dankzij de ongedwongen sfeer
is de boodschap van Bona goed
overgekomen: Speel! Zing!
Dans! En dan het liefst
allemaal tegelijk.
Richard Bona
Een ochtend met
A morning with
On Wednesday, November
15th, Codarts, University of
Professional Arts Education,
hosted guest bass guitarist
Richard Bona (Cameroon). He
was on hand to give a clinic for
students from the Rotterdam
Pop Academy (RPA), the
Rotterdam Jazz Academy and
the Rotterdam Academy for
World Music (Latin/Latin Jazz/
Brazilian study programme)
and performed with them.
Desmond Haneveer, RPA
teacher, offers the following
report. About spilled coffee
and comfortable playing.
‘I haven’t played like this for
fifteen years,’ confides Richard
Bona. His equipment for sound
effects doesn’t work on 220
volts, and he left his transformer
at home. Not defeated, he
plugs in the regular bass guitar
and plays. But first coffee! Is
there coffee? No? The machine
isn’t working? As he waits for
The Brown Gold, Bona begins
playing. It is instant magic. He
sings without amplification,
which benefits the intimacy of
the music. We are treated to
a sort of living room concert.
In the hands of Bona, the bass
guitar is a versatile instrument.
His playing varies widely, from
hard funk, to guttural growls,
to music that is simply sweet.
The result is something special,
especially when he combines
the bass with this falsetto.
In an overflowing classroom
in the WMDC (World Music &
Dance Centre), bassist extraordinaire
Richard Bona treated
us to an intriguing look into his
musical universe. After the cup
of coffee was arranged, he got
started. He explains that it is of
the utmost importance for every
musician to sing. If you don’t
sing, you won’t be able to properly
inhabit the music. By singing,
you give your body a sort of
muscular memory. Cameroon’s
musical culture is characterized
by storytelling, and so singing
is essential. For Bona, singing
and playing the bass guitar are
inseparably linked with each
other. He thinks it’s unfortunate
that musicians sing so little
in the western world. Singing
makes you a better musician.
Then Bona got focused on playing
the bass and asked a student
to join in. The student promptly
kicked over Bona’s cup of coffee.
‘You knocked over my coffee!’
Fortunately, someone quickly
brought a second cup. Within
moments, that cup has been
knocked over, too. This time, it’s
Bona who spilled it. ‘I thought it
was your coffee,’ he says to the
student. ‘I wanted to get you
back.’ These little jokes contribute
to creating a pleasant and
relaxed atmosphere. A whole
range of topics are discussed
during the clinic: changing positions,
experiencing pain while
you study (‘Suffering should
not be part of music.’), dancing,
Jaco Pastorius, the difference
between guitar and bass guitar,
writing songs, and making
music in different styles.
According to Bona, you should
always make sure that you are
comfortable. Not only in your
music, but in your whole life.
When you have to play something,
and it doesn’t feel right:
don’t do it! Nothing should
be forced, according to Bona.
But then, what should you do
when you try to play something,
and it just doesn’t work out?
Ah, that is a challenge. It is, in
fact, evident that Bona is very
relaxed even while he’s playing
the most complex licks; as if it is
absolutely no effort.
And then, after an hour and a
half, and some public singing,
it’s over. Richard Bona is not just
a great musician, he is a great
person. He is always able to
create a connection between
music and society, and the role
in society that the musician
plays. Thanks to the relaxed
atmosphere, Bona’s message
was clear: Play! Sing! Dance!
Preferably all three at the
same time.
Coriolanus comes back
Afgelopen zomer stonden ze
met hun voorstelling ruim
zestig keer in een tent van
het reizende theaterfestival
De Parade; in Rotterdam, Den
Haag, Utrecht en Amsterdam.
In januari zijn ze opnieuw te
zien, dan in poppodium het
Paard van Troje in Den Haag.
Ze, dat zijn onder anderen
Louise Frank en Erik Spruijt,
docent en student van de
Rotterdamse Dansacademie;
hun voorstelling is Coriolanus,
een productie van De Dutch
Don’t Dance Division.
Shakespeare liet zich in 1608 inspireren
door de Romeinse veldheer
Coriolanus, die leefde rond
500 voor Christus. Thom Stuart
– danser, choreograaf en één
van de artistiek directeuren van
De Dutch Don’t Dance Division
(DDDDD) – zette het vierhonderd
jaar oude toneelstuk om in
een eigentijdse dansvoorstelling.
‘Coriolanus heeft op De Parade
10.000 bezoekers getrokken, van
wie er 9.000 normaal gesproken
geen dansvoorstelling bezoeken.
Dat was ook het doel van deze
voorstelling: dans onder de aandacht
brengen van een breed
publiek,’ aldus Louise Frank
(58), docent eigentijdse dans
(Limón) aan de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie (RDA). Zij vertolkt
de rol van Veturia, de moeder
van Coriolanus.
De hoofdrol in Coriolanus wordt
gedanst door Raoul Dumas, oudstudent
van de RDA. Sabrina Vis,
eveneens oud-student van de
RDA, is Volumnia, de vrouw van
Coriolanus. Thom Stuart danst
Ovedius, een tegenstander van
Coriolanus. De tien overige rollen
worden vertolkt door dansstudenten,
onder wie zeven van de
RDA: Dominik Blank, Erik Bos,
Joaquin Sanchez, Erik Spruijt,
Brian Tjon Tjauw Liem, Nico
Voskamp en Lars Wettmann.
‘De kans om mee te doen in een
stuk met zo veel uitvoeringen
krijg je niet vaak,’ zegt Erik Spruijt
(18), tweedejaarsstudent van
de RDA. ‘Daar komt nog bij dat
Coriolanus een heel heftige
voorstelling is, niet te vergelijken
met de stukken waarin ik tot nu
toe heb gedanst. Dit was een geweldige
ervaring.’ Dat geldt ook
voor het deelnemen aan het reizende
theaterfestival De Parade.
‘De sfeer en de entourage zijn
heel bijzonder. Alle artiesten en
medewerkers eten en slapen in
een tent op het festivalterrein.
En het publiek van De Parade is
heel anders dan het publiek dat
je gewoonlijk meemaakt.’
Louise Frank: ‘Ik heb echt genoten.
We hebben heel serieus
gewerkt en we hebben heel veel
plezier gehad. Als ze me weer
vragen, zeg ik meteen ja.’
Coriolanus wordt op 18, 19 en 20
januari 2007 opnieuw gedanst,
grotendeels in dezelfde bezetting,
en wel in poppodium het
Paard van Troje in Den Haag.
Erik Spruijt repeteert ondertussen
voor de Notenkraker, een
nieuwe productie van DDDDD
(in samenwerking met het
Holland Dance Festival), die van
26 december 2006 tot en met 1
januari 2007 tien keer te zien is in
de Grote Kerk in Den Haag.
Last summer they performed
about sixty times in a tent in
the traveling theatre festival
De Parade; in Rotterdam,
The Hague, Utrecht and
Amsterdam. In January, they’ll
be performing again, now
in the pop venue the Paard
van Troje in The Hague. The
cast includes Louise Frank
and Erik Spruijt, teacher and
student at the Rotterdam
Dance Academy; their piece is
Coriolanus, a production of De
Dutch Don’t Dance Division.
In 1608, Shakespeare was
inspired by the Roman general
Coriolanus, who lived about
500 B.C. Thom Stuart – dancer,
choreographer and one of the
artistic directors of De Dutch
Don’t Dance Division (DDDDD)
– has staged the 400-year-old
play as a contemporary dance
performance.
‘At De Parade, 10,000 people
came to see Coriolanus, 9,000
of whom normally never go to
a dance performance. That was
also the goal of this performance:
to bring dance to the
attention of a broader audience,’
says Louise Frank (58), teacher of
contemporary dance (Limón) at
the Rotterdam Dance Academy
(RDA). She plays the role of
Veturia, Coriolanus’ mother.
The leading role of Coriolanus
is danced by Raoul Dumas, a
former RDA student. Sabrina Vis,
also an RDA alumna, is Volumnia,
Coriolanus’ wife. Thom Stuart
dances the part of Ovedius,
Coriolanus’ opponent. The
ten other roles are danced by
students, including seven from
the RDA: Dominik Blank, Erik Bos,
Joaquin Sanchez, Erik Spruijt,
Brian Tjon Tjauw Liem, Nico
Voskamp and Lars Wettmann.
‘You don’t get the chance very
often to take part in a piece with
so many performances,’ says Erik
Spruijt (18), a second year student
at the RDA. ‘In addition to
that, Coriolanus is a very heavy
piece. I really can’t compare it to
any other performance I’ve ever
danced in. This was an amazing
experience.’ He says that the
same was true of participating in
the traveling theatre festival De
Parade. ‘The atmosphere and environment
were really special. All
the artists and staff ate and slept
in a tent on the festival grounds.
And the people who come to
De Parade are really different
from the audiences you normally
experience.’
Louise Frank: ‘I really enjoyed it.
We did very serious work, and
we had a lot of fun. If they were
to ask me again, I’d say yes immediately.’
Coriolanus will be danced
again on the 18th, 19th, and
20th of January, 2007, with
largely the same cast, in the pop
venue the Paard van Troje in The
Hague. Erik Spruijt is also now
rehearsing for the Nutcracker,
a new DDDDD production (in
cooperation with the Holland
Dance Festival), which will
be performed ten times from
December 26th 2006 through
the 1st of January 2007 in the
Grote Kerk in The Hague.
Takashi Shinagawa (front row, middle) and his trombone friends.
Takashi Shinagawa, geboren
in Sapporo (Japan), begon
pas op zijn 18de serieus na
te denken over een carrière
in de muziek. Inmiddels is hij
laatstejaarsstudent trombone
aan de Rotterdam Academy
for Classical Music van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium.
Beide beroepen
hebben een creatief karakter
én zijn sterk afhankelijk van het
moment. Zowel een concert
als een gerecht is een unieke
gebeurtenis; het zal nooit meer
op dezelfde manier worden
gespeeld of gegeten,’ vertelt
Takashi Shinagawa (28).
Toch werd het de trombone.
Waarom koos hij voor het
Rotterdam Conservatorium? ‘Ik
ging naar een concert van het
Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest
dat op dat moment Japan
Takashi Shinagawa, born in
Sapporo (Japan), only started
thinking seriously about a
career in music when he was
18 years old. He is now in
his final year as a trombone
student at the Rotterdam
Academy for Classical Music of
the Rotterdam Conservatoire.
A portrait.
‘When I was a student at the
Music College in Tokyo, I was
very serious about music, but before
that I didn’t know if I wanted
to become a chef or a musician.
Both professions are creative,
and both are very dependent
on the present moment. Both a
concert and a meal are unique
events; it will never be played
or eaten in the same way again,’
says Takashi Shinagawa (28).
In the end, he chose the trombone.
Why did he elect to attend
the Rotterdam Conservatoire?
‘I went to a concert of the Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra when
they were touring in Japan. Solo
aandeed. Aansluitend gaven
solotrombonist Jörgen van Rijen
en consorten een masterclass. Ik
deed zelf niet mee, maar maakte
wel opnamen met een minirecorder,’
zegt Takashi. Wat hij
hoorde, maakte een onuitwisbare
indruk.
Toch al niet tevreden over zijn
toenmalige studie, trok hij de
stoute schoenen aan en stuurde
een tape naar het Rotterdams
Conservatorium. En toen stond
hij ineens op Schiphol. ‘Ik was
nog nooit buiten Japan geweest
en sprak nauwelijks Engels, dus
het was nogal wat.’
Hij kreeg les van Jörgen van
Rijen, Pierre Volders en George
Wiegel en was meteen overtuigd.
‘Het was meer dan goed; zoeken
was niet meer nodig, want dit
was het helemaal. Ik zocht naar
een andere mentaliteit, naar een
intelligente, flexibele benadering
van muziek, en die vond ik bij
het Rotterdams Conservatorium.’
Geïnspireerd raakte hij ook door
het Nieuw Trombone Collectief,
waarin oud-studenten van het
trombonist Jörgen van Rijen and
his associates also gave a master
class. I didn’t take part in the
class, but I did make a recording
with a mini-recorder,’ says
Takashi. What he heard made an
indelible impression.
He wasn’t really satisfied with
his studies at that time anyway,
so he worked up his nerve and
sent a tape to the Rotterdam
Conservatoire. And then, before
he knew it, he had arrived at
Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. ‘I
had never been outside of Japan,
and I could barely speak English,
so it was really quite something.’
He took classes with Jörgen van
Rijen, Pierre Volders and George
Wiegel and was immediately
convinced. ‘It was better than
good; I didn’t need to look any
further because I had found
what I was looking for. I’d been
searching for a different mentality,
for an intelligent, flexible
approach to music, and that is
what I found at the Rotterdam
Conservatoire.’ The New Trom-
Takashi
Shinagawa
conservatorium spelen.
Een hoogtepunt gedurende zijn
studie was het samen met zijn
collega-studenten winnen van
de prestigieuze Trombone Choir
Competition in 2005. Deze competitie
maakt deel uit van het
befaamde, door de International
Trombone Association (ITA)
georganiseerde International
Trombone Festival (ITF) in New
Orleans. Takashi: ‘Daar werd het
idee geboren om een cd-opname
te maken.’
Dat jaar studeerden veel leden
van de tromboneklas af. Afscheid
nemen viel hen zwaar, want de
klas is een hechte club, die zich
ook geregeld buiten de school
manifesteert. ‘Het was moeilijk
om iedereen weer bij elkaar te
krijgen, maar het is eindelijk
gelukt.’ Van 23 tot en met 29
oktober jl. hebben dertig (!)
trombonisten, zowel oud-studenten
als nieuwe aanwas, in
verschillende bezettingen, een
cd opgenomen, vertelt Takashi.
‘Het werd een echte reünie, maar
er moest ook hard gewerkt wor-
bone Collective, composed of
former conservatoire students,
also inspired him.
One of the high points during
his studies was winning the
prestigious Trombone Choir
Competition in 2005 along with
his fellow students. This competition
is part of the famous
International Trombone Festival
(ITF) in New Orleans organized
by the International Trombone
Association (ITA). Takashi: ‘That is
where we got the idea to record
a CD.’
That year, many students in the
trombone class graduated, and
saying goodbye was difficult.
The class had been a close-knit
group and performed regularly
together outside of school. ‘It
was hard to get everyone back
together again, but we were successful
in the end.’ From the 23rd
to the 29th of October, thirty (!)
trombonists, both former and
current students, in a variety of
different groupings, recorded
a CD, tells Takashi. ‘It was a real
den! In drie dagen hebben we
twaalf stukken opgenomen. Het
was een ware uitputtingsslag.’
Op de cd komen stukken die
in New Orleans zijn gespeeld,
maar ook nieuwe, zoals het stuk
6.35. Insiders weten dat dit het
nummer is van de Muziekzaal
van Codarts. 6.35 is gecomponeerd
door oud-student Steven
Verhelst. De goede verstaander
hoort de typische Rotterdamse
trombonesound én het piepen
van de koffieautomaat in de
kantine…
Takashi besluit: ‘Wij zien onszelf
als de nieuwe generatie trombonisten;
divers van stijl, divers van
nationaliteit, maar bij elkaar één
geluid.’
www.tromboneclassrotterdam.
com en www.takashibro.com.
reunion, but we also had to work
really hard. In three days, we
recorded twelve pieces. It was a
real marathon session.’
The CD features pieces that were
played in New Orleans but also
new compositions, such as the
piece 6.35. Insiders know that
this is the number of the Codarts
Muziekzaal. Former student
Steven Verhelst composed the
number 6.35. Those who are
familiar with the surroundings
will hear the typical Rotterdam
trombone sound as well as the
gurgling of the coffee machine
in the cafeteria…
In conclusion, Takashi says: ‘We
eration of trombonists; diverse
stylistically, representing different
nationalities, but together
we make one sound.’
The formal presentation of the
CD won’t happen yet for a while,
but there are already ideas to
organize a tour in five years.
Cut! Dat
kan beter?!
Op 7, 8 en 9 november jl. stond Cut! Dat kan beter?!
vier keer in een uitverkocht Bibliotheektheater in
Rotterdam. Deze vijftig minuten durende musical
werd gemaakt door vierdejaarsstudenten van de
Rotterdam Academy for music in Education (‘docent
muziek’). De cast bestond uit tweede- en derdejaarsstudenten.
Cut!
Cut! Dat
kan beter?!
On the 7th, 8th, and 9th of November, the production
Cut! Dat kan beter?! was performed four times in a
sold-out Bibliotheektheater in Rotterdam. This fiftyminute
musical was created by fourth-year students
of the Rotterdam Academy for music in Education
(‘music teacher’). The cast was composed of second-
and third-year students.
Cut! Dat kan beter?! is about RTL25, a corny television
channel which features programmes like Movement
for seniors. The ratings have taken a nosedive; something
has to happen. A pimp team is hired. Their
motto: anything for the ratings. But how does the old
crew deal with this new approach? And what happens
when it turns out that everyone just feels miserable
and the improved ratings fail to materialize? In the
end, the old crew is ready to fight for the channel.
The production Cut! Dat kan beter?! shows that the
students of the Rotterdam Academy for music in
Education feel quite at home with a range of theatrical
forms: not only can they sing and make music, but
they also act and dance (the stage set was created
by students from the Willem de Kooning Academy in
Rotterdam).
The Rotterdam Conservatoire
is highly regarded within and
outside of the Netherlands.
The conservatoire can
thank a strong faculty and a
broad, modern educational
programme, which is clearly
responsive to international
standards in the music profession,
for its good name. In addition,
scores of well-known
musicians from around the
world visit the conservatoire
to give master classes to students.
2006 was no exception.
Kijken,
luisteren en
leren in Brazilië
Een ensemble van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium
onder leiding van Annaelis de
Jong (hoofdvakdocent piano
Latin) bracht in oktober een
bezoek aan Brazilië – om er op
te treden, en om er ‘te kijken,
te luisteren en te leren’. ‘Het
was helemaal geweldig.’
Naar aanleiding van de tiende
sterfdag van de beroemde
Braziliaanse componist Antonio
Carlos Jobim bracht een
ensemble van het Rotterdams
Conservatorium in december
2004 een hommage aan ‘de vader
van de bossa nova’. Dit eerbetoon
beleefde in november
van het jaar daarop een reprise.
Het ensemble dat deze serie
concerten verzorgde, bestond
uit elf studenten van verschillende
studierichtingen van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium
(Klassieke muziek, Latin en
Jazz). De muzikale leiding was
in handen van Annaelis de Jong,
die ook vrijwel alle arrangementen
had geschreven. Gastmusici
waren gitarist Paulo Aragão
en percussionist Alaor Soares
uit Brazilië. Op voorspraak van
Aragão werd het Rotterdamse
gezelschap uitgenodigd om
te komen optreden in Rio de
Janeiro.
En zo kon het gebeuren dat het
ensemble onder leiding van
Annaelis de Jong, vergezeld
door een aantal studenten,
van 1 tot en met 17 oktober
jl. verbleef in ‘het land van
de samba’. ‘Het was helemaal
geweldig,’ vertelt Annaelis de
Jong enthousiast. ‘Voor de
meeste studenten betekende
dit de eerste kennismaking met
Brazilië en zo’n ervaring maakt
natuurlijk erg veel indruk.’
De band die in oktober
afreisde naar Brazilië, bestond
uit Annaelis de Jong (piano,
dirigent), Danny van Kessel
(piano), Magda Mendes en
Rebecca Lobry (zang), Daniel
Mathot (gitaar), Andreas
Rodosthenous (bas), Jean Luc
Jossa (percussie) en Rob Vriens
(drums), plus Sietse van Gorkom
en Camilla van der Kooij (viool),
Rani Kumar (altviool), Jonas Pap
(cello) en Siri-Marie Bergsmark
(basklarinet).
‘We hebben vier concerten
gegeven,’ aldus Annaelis de
Jong. ‘Met heel veel succes. We
werden toegejuicht door het
publiek! En veel mensen waren
ontroerd. Ze konden nauwelijks
geloven dat wij niet uit Brazilië
kwamen, maar uit Europa. “Wat
goed dat jullie onze muziek
zo fantastisch kunnen spelen,”
zeiden ze. En: “Gefeliciteerd met
jullie show!” In een stad als Rio
de Janeiro vinden dagelijks wel
vijftig concerten en concertjes
plaats.
Rotterdam.’
Verder had Annaelis de Jong
masterclasses georganiseerd
met Nelson Faria (gitarist) en
Teresa Cristina (zang), evenals
percussie-, piano- en klarinetlessen
op de school van Aragão.
‘Ook hebben we met z’n allen
een bezoek gebracht aan
pianist/componist/arrangeur
Francis Hime, de Jobim van nu.
We waren te gast in zijn studio.
Dat was heel inspirerend.’ Verder
hebben alle studenten individueel
lessen gevolgd in Rio de
Janeiro, bij plaatselijke musici,
aldus Annaelis de Jong.
Een project als dit is absoluut
voor herhaling vatbaar, vindt
Annaelis de Jong. ‘Wat mij
betreft wordt het standaard
opgenomen in het curriculum.
Als je je bezighoudt met muziek
uit Brazilië, moet je kennis
kunnen maken met het land en
zijn cultuur.’ Overigens zijn de
vliegtickets van de reis in oktober
voor een groot deel betaald
met de opbrengsten van de
concerten die het ensemble dit
jaar heeft gegeven.
Watching,
listening and
learning in Brazil
An ensemble from the
Rotterdam Conservatoire, under
the direction of Annaelis
de Jong (main subject teacher,
Latin piano), visited Brazil in
October – to perform and ‘to
watch, to listen, and to learn’.
‘It was absolutely wonderful.’
To observe the tenth anniversary
of the death of the famous
Brazilian composer Antonio
Carlos Jobim, an ensemble from
the Rotterdam Conservatoire
paid tribute to ‘the father of the
bossa nova’ in December 2004.
This homage was reprised in
November of the following year.
The ensemble that gave this
series of concerts consisted of
eleven students from different
courses within the Rotterdam
Conservatoire (Classical Music,
Latin and Jazz). Annaelis de
Jong was the musical director;
she was also responsible for
writing nearly all of the musical
arrangements. Guitarist Paulo
Aragão and percussionist Alaor
Soares from Brazil appeared as
guest musicians. Aragão was
also involved in arranging for
the group from Rotterdam to
be invited to perform in Rio de
Janeiro.
That’s how it happened that
the ensemble, led by Annaelis
de Jong, and accompanied by a
number of students, was able to
visit ‘the land of samba’ from the
1st through the 17th of October
2006. ‘It was absolutely wonderful,’
says Annaelis de Jong enthusiastically.
‘This was the first
exposure to Brazil for most of
the students, and it’s the sort of
experience that naturally makes
a big impression.’
The band which traveled to
Brazil in October included
Annaelis de Jong (piano,
conductor), Danny van Kessel
(piano), Magda Mendes and
Rebecca Lobry (vocals), Daniel
Mathot (guitar), Andreas
Rodosthenous (bass), Jean Luc
Jossa (percussion) and Rob
Vriens (drums), plus Sietse van
Gorkom and Camilla van der
Kooij (violin), Rani Kumar (viola),
Jonas Pap (cello) and Siri-Marie
Bergsmark (bass clarinet).
‘We gave four concerts,’ says
Annaelis de Jong. ‘With great
success. The public cheered for
us! Many people were
really moved. They could hardly
believe that we were not from
Brazil, but from Europe. “It’s
great that you can play our
music so well,” they said. And:
“Congratulations on your show!”
In a city like Rio de Janeiro, fifty
concerts and smaller musical
events take place daily. So we
saw performances every day,
including shows by the guitarist
Guinga, who has been a guest
here in Rotterdam.’
Annaelis de Jong had also
organised master classes with
Nelson Faria (guitarist) and
Teresa Cristina (singer), as well
as percussion, piano and clarinet
lessons at Aragão’s school.
‘We all visited the pianist/composer/arranger
Francis Hime,
the Jobim of today. We were
guests in his studio. That was
very inspiring.’ The students also
all took individual classes in Rio
de Janeiro with local musicians,
according to Annaelis de Jong.
A project like this should
definitely be repeated, Annaelis
de Jong thinks. ‘As far as I’m
concerned, it should become a
standard part of the curriculum.
If you are interested in Brazilian
music, then you should really
get to know the country and its
culture.’ The cost of the airfare
was largely paid for by the
proceeds from the concerts
that the ensemble has given
this year.
dit de eerste kennismaking met Brazilië
en zo’n ervaring maakt natuurlijk erg veel
indruk.’ Foto’s Annaelis de Jong.
