Gezondheid
en dans
Gaby Allard, coördinator Gezondheid en Dans van de Rotterdamse Dansacademie (RDA): ‘Het was een gerichte keuze van de RDA om gezondheid tot één van de speerpunten van het beleid te maken.’
Gaby Allard, Health and Dance coordinator of the Rotterdam Dance Academy (RDA): ‘It was a deliberate choice to make health a cornerstone of the RDA’s policy.’
Gezondheid, dat is voor de
Rotterdamse Dansacademie
(RDA) een heel belangrijk
onderwerp. Want, zo luidt
de redenering, een hoger
(technisch) niveau van je
studenten bereik je niet door
ze alleen maar meer te laten
oefenen. Bovendien is het
lichaam het instrument waarmee
een danser zijn artisticiteit
vertolkt, dus daar dien je
verstandig mee om te gaan.
Een gesprek met de coördinator
Gezondheid en Dans van
de RDA, Gaby Allard.
Gaby Allard, die kan terugkijken
op een 15-jarige carrière
als danseres bij Dance Works
Rotterdam, is niet alleen coördinator
Gezondheid en Dans
van de RDA; tevens neemt ze
deel aan de kenniskring van het
lectoraat Excellence and well
being in the performing arts,
dat in september 2004 met als
lector Anna Aalten aan Codarts,
Hogeschool voor de Kunsten
van start is gegaan. Het doel
van dit lectoraat is door middel
van praktijkgericht onderzoek
meer kennis te ontwikkelen
over de relatie tussen artistieke
en fysieke excellentie en de gezondheid
van dansers. Aan de
kenniskring van dit lectoraat nemen
ook meerdere RDA-docenten
en enkele gekwalificeerde
externe dansonderzoekers deel.
‘Als je excellentie wilt bereiken,
en dat is het streven van de
RDA, dan kun en mag je niet
om het onderwerp gezondheid
heen,’ aldus Gaby Allard. ‘Tot
voor kort was oplappen het trefwoord,
nu is dat preventie. Door
bijvoorbeeld gevarieerder te
trainen, ben je minder blessuregevoelig,
en kun je je meer richten
op excellentie. Dat inzicht is
de laatste jaren doorgedrongen
tot de danswereld. Nee, niet
alleen in Rotterdam, maar het
was wel een gerichte keuze van
de RDA om gezondheid tot één
van de speerpunten van het
beleid te maken. In dat licht
bezien, was de aanstelling van
een coördinator Gezondheid en
Dans, nu ongeveer tweeënhalf
jaar geleden, een logische stap.’
In het kader van het lectoraat
Excellence and well being in
the performing arts doet Gaby
Allard onderzoek naar onder
meer het blessuregedrag van
studenten, de fitheid van studenten
in relatie tot het lesprogramma
en periodisering in het
lesprogramma. Verder werkt ze
mee aan het onderzoek naar de
juiste voeding voor dansers en
dansstudenten en het belang
van feedback in dansonderwijs.
Ideale omgeving
Wat gezondheid en dans
betreft, fungeert de coördinator
Gezondheid en Dans als het
aanspreekpunt voor de RDAstudenten.
‘Als je vroeger een
blessure had, danste je gewoon
door je klachten heen – dat
was de cultuur; stoer. Gelukkig
is gezondheid ondertussen
bespreekbaar en wordt het
geaccepteerd als je geblesseerd
bent,’ aldus Gaby Allard. ‘Wij
proberen onze studenten op
te leiden tot verantwoordelijke
dansers die luisteren naar hun
lijf. Wanneer je de goede en
de minder goede kanten van
je eigen lichaam leert kennen,
word je een betere danser.’
Naast de lector Excellence
and well being in the performing
arts en de coördinator
Gezondheid en Dans bestaat
het (para)medische team dat
zich op de RDA direct met
gezondheid bezighoudt uit
sportarts Rhijn Visser, fysiotherapeuten
Anita Radier en Wanda
Gieger, voedingsdeskundige
Bert Snijder en breath and mental
coach Marianne van der Velde.
Negen van de tien dansers
hebben negatieve ervaringen
met een arts, weet Gaby Allard,
bijvoorbeeld omdat hen bij een
blessure werd geadviseerd om
maar te stoppen met dansen.
‘Wij willen onze studenten de
juiste weg naar begeleiders en
begeleiding wijzen: wat voor
specialistische hulp bestaat er
voor dansers en waar vind je
die? Tijdig een arts bezoeken
die het vak en de specifieke
eisen ervan kent, kan schade
voorkomen. De drempel is niet
zo hoog als ze wellicht denken.’
Ondertussen dienen de studenten
zich natuurlijk wel te realiseren
dat ze op de RDA worden
opgeleid in een welhaast ideale
omgeving, zegt Gaby Allard.
‘Met lange werkdagen en koude
kleedkamers kan de praktijk er
straks heel anders uitzien. Maar
als we onze studenten ervan
kunnen doordringen dat ze zelf
de sleutel in handen hebben als
het gaat om gezondheid in relatie
tot hun carrière, dan hebben
we het goed gedaan, vind ik.’
Groepslessen jazzpiano
Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis
worden op het Rotterdams
Conservatorium groepslessen
jazzpiano gegeven. Tijdens
deze lessen, die zijn ontwikkeld
voor de eerstejaarsstudenten,
worden de basics gespeeld
door twee, vier en soms zelfs zes
pianisten tegelijkertijd (achter
twee vleugels).
Het lesmateriaal bestaat uit
onder meer linkerhandakkoorden,
two hand voicings, blockchords,
diverse (jazz)ladders en
daarnaast gebroken drie- en
vierklanken met diverse variaties
(geïnspireerd op het werk
van meesters zoals Bill Evans en
Herbie Hancock).
Voorheen behandelde de
docent het lesmateriaal tijdens
de hoofdvaklessen met elke student
apart. De nieuwe methode
is rendabeler. Daarnaast hebben
de groepslessen als voordeel
dat de studenten elkaar beter
leren kennen.
Ter afsluiting van het eerste semester
hebben de eerstejaarsstudenten
een praktische test
gedaan, waarbij al het geleerde
moest worden getoond. Alle
studenten hebben deze test
goed tot zeer goed volbracht.
Speciaal voor deze lessen
maakte Rob van Bavel, hoofdvakdocent
jazzpiano aan de
Rotterdam Jazz Academy, het
boekje Jazz Piano Essentials.
José-Luis Estellés
Van woensdag 8 tot en met vrijdag
10 maart a.s. verzorgt klarinettist
José-Luis Estellés een
masterclass voor alle ensembles
van de kamermuziekcursus
van de Rotterdam Academy for
Classical Music.
Estellés is als soloklarinettist
verbonden aan het Orquesta
Ciudad de Granada en geregeld
als solist te horen in de
grote concertzalen over de hele
wereld. Daarnaast is hij een
gepassioneerde kamermusicus.
Hij heeft lang intens samengewerkt
met het Orpheus Quartet.
Van deze samenwerking getuigt
een cd met werken van Brahms
en Keuris. Estellés, mede-oprichter
en artistiek leider van
het hedendaagse gezelschap
Ensemble TaiMAgranada,
verzorgt masterclasses in
Spanje, Engeland, Frankrijk
en Zwitserland. En sinds
enige tijd is hij als gastdocent
verbonden aan het Rotterdams
Conservatorium. De masterclass
in maart is zijn eerste voor de
kamermuziekcursus.
Circus Arts
Codarts, University of
launching a four-year bachelor
course in Circus Arts. The course
is not so much concerned with
the traditional circus, but rather
is focused on variety theatre,
special events, open-air or street
circus performance, and cirque
nouveau. To provide information
to anyone who is interested
in the course, an open day is
being organized for Saturday,
April 8th. The time and place
will be announced as soon as
possible on the website www.
Body of Work
In 2006, just as in 2004 and
2005, students from the
Rotterdam Dance Academy and
the Rotterdam Conservatoire
will again jointly present an
evening-long benefit performance
called Body of Work.
This year, the students will be
on stage for two evenings at
the Rotterdam Schouwburg, on
Monday the 15th and Tuesday
the 16th of May.
The proceeds of this third presentation
of Body of Work will
go to a scholarship fund for students
of Codarts, University of
Professional Arts Education. The
Lions Club Rotterdam Harbour
uses this fund to support young
talent and to give students in
the Maasstad the chance to realize
their artistic dreams.
The varied programme for May
15th and 16th consists of work
from prominent choreographers,
including Jiří Kylián.
Each work will be accompanied
by live music performed by
ensembles from the Rotterdam
Conservatoire.
As soon as the programme is
finalized, it will be posted on
www.codarts.nl.
Benjamin Herman
The VPRO/Boy Edgar Prijs 2006
has been awarded to Benjamin
prestigious in the Netherlands
in the field of jazz and improvised
music, will be presented
on next Wednesday 26 April
during a festive programme at
the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
From the jury report: ‘The jury
Jazz piano group lessons
For the first time in the history
of the Rotterdam Conservatoire,
jazz piano lessons are being
given to students in groups.
During the classes, which have
been developed for first-year
students, the basics are played
by two, four and sometimes six
pianists at a time (using two
grand pianos).
The curriculum includes left
handed chords, two hand
voicings, block chords, diverse
(jazz) scales, and, in addition,
broken third and fourth chords
with diverse variations (inspired
by the work of masters like Bill
Evans and Herbie Hancock).
In the past, teachers taught
this material to each student
individually during main subject
classes. The new method is
more cost-effective. The group
lessons also have the advantage
of allowing students to get to
know each other better.
At the end of the first semester,
the first-year students were
tested to show what they had
learned. All the students com-
pleted the tests with good to
very good results.
Especially for these classes,
Rob van Bavel, a main subject
teacher of jazz piano at the
Rotterdam Jazz Academy, put
together the booklet Jazz Piano
Essentials.
From Wednesday the 8th
through Friday the 10th of
March, clarinetist José-Luis
Estellés will teach a master class
for all of the chamber music
ensembles of the Rotterdam
Academy for Classical Music.
Estellés is a solo clarinetist
with the Orquesta Ciudad de
Granada and performs regularly
as a soloist in great concert
halls throughout the world. He
is also a passionate chamber
musician. He has worked very
closely for some time with the
Orpheus Quartet. A CD featuring
works by Brahms and Keuris
is a testament to the collaboration.
Estellés, the co-founder
and artistic director of the
contemporary group Ensemble
TaiMAgranada, gives master
classes in Spain, England,
France and Switzerland. He is
now also a guest teacher at the
Rotterdam Conservatoire. The
master class in March is the first
that he will give for the chamber
music course.
Bartho Staalman, eerstejaarsstudent
drums aan de Rotterdam
Pop Academy, is binnenkort te
zien als drummer Peter Walrecht
in Wild Romance, een film over
Herman Brood, die de eerste
drie elpees van diens carrière
beslaat (1974-1979). Het verhaal
wordt verteld vanuit het
perspectief van de beginnende
Groningse kroegbaas Koos van
Dijk, de latere manager van
Brood, die een act zoekt voor
zijn café.
Een overweldigende ervaring,
noemt Bartho Staalman (20) het
meedoen in de film. ‘De eerste
opnamedag was voor mij een
shock. ’s Ochtends heel vroeg
stortten zo’n tweehonderd
joelende figuranten zich op ons
en misdroegen zich alsof het
een echt Broodconcert betrof.
Het is slopend om keer op
keer een nummer met steeds
dezelfde energie droog te
moeten spelen, maar iedereen
ging elke keer volledig los.’ Het
acteursleven beviel hem wel.
Bartho: ‘We werden heel goed
verzorgd; eten, drinken, alles
was voor handen. Wie zou dat
niet willen? De werkelijkheid
van het studentenleven komt
dan weer hard aan, maar ik heb
er even van kunnen proeven.
Nu weer aan de studie!’
Bartho kwam, na een korte
flirt met jazz, via de vooropleiding
van het Rotterdams
Conservatorium terecht bij
de Rotterdam Pop Academy.
Vanaf zijn zevende jaar wist
hij het al: hij wilde drummer
worden. Omdat hij zijn ouders
gek maakte door voortdurend
overal op te roffelen, kreeg hij
een drumstel. Na jaren in een
drumband te hebben gespeeld,
begon hij op zijn dertiende
een eigen band. ‘Pas toen
ging ik dingen leren die me
echt interesseerden.’ Van Peter
Elbertse, eerste paukenist van
het Nederlands Philharmonisch
Orkest en organisator van het
slagwerkspektakel Culemborg
Van Slag, heeft Bartho geleerd
dat niet alleen beheersing van
de techniek, maar vooral ook
plezier hebben belangrijk is.
Nu hij begonnen is aan de
Rotterdam Pop Academy,
wil Bartho zich voor de volle
honderd procent richten op
zijn studie. ‘Deze tijd wil ik echt
gebruiken om alles te leren wat
er te leren valt.’ Bartho is geïnteresseerd
in cross-overprojecten.
Maandelijks organiseert hij de
zogenoemde Jampotpourri in
het café van WaterFront, waarvoorconservatoriumstudenten
van alle studierichtingen
worden uitgenodigd. ‘Ik wil me
niet beperken tot één bepaalde
muziekstijl. Hopelijk denken
andere studenten er ook zo
over. Waarom zou je als jazzgitarist
of klassieke blazer niet in
een popband kunnen spelen?
Natuurlijk kost het tijd om aan
elkaar te wennen, maar we kunnen
van elkaar leren. Naast het
perfectioneren van je techniek
is luisteren naar en interesse
tonen voor andere muziekstijlen
één van de dingen die je op
een conservatorium als dit kunt
doen.’
Bartho Staalman, a first-year
drum student at the Rotterdam
Pop Academy, can soon be seen
as the drummer Peter Walrecht
in Wild Romance, a film about
Herman Brood, that is about the
period of the first three LPs of
his career (1974-1979). The story
is told from the perspective of
Koos van Dijk, a Groningen café
owner who was just starting out
and looking for a musical act for
his café; he would later become
Brood’s manager.
An overwhelming experience,
that is how Bartho Staalman
(20) describes working on the
film. ‘The first day of filming was
really a shock for me. Early in
the morning, 200 screaming extras
threw themselves at us and
made a scene as if it were a real
Brood concert. It is exhausting
to do the same number over
and over, as if you’re playing it
but without sound, but every
time, everyone really gave it
all they had.’ He enjoyed the
actor’s life. Bartho: ‘We were
well looked after; our meals, our
drinks, everything was provided.
Who wouldn’t want that?
Getting back to the reality of a
student’s life is quite a contrast,
but it was great to have a little
taste of the film business. Now,
back to studying!’
After briefly flirting with jazz,
Bartho came, by way of the
preparatory course of the
Rotterdam Conservatoire, to the
Rotterdam Pop Academy. He
has known it since he was seven
years old: he wanted to become
a drummer. He got a drum set
because he drove his parents
crazy by constantly drumming
on everything. After playing for
years in a drum band, he started
his own band when he was
thirteen. ‘That is when I really
started to learn things that interested
me.’ Peter Elbertse, the
first timpanist of the Nederlands
Philharmonisch Orkest and
organizer of the percussion
spectacle Culemborg Van Slag,
is the one who taught Bartho
that it is important not only to
master the technique, but also
to enjoy playing.
Now that he has started at
the Rotterdam Pop Academy,
Bartho intends to devote
himself to his studies one hundred
percent. ‘I want to use this
time to learn everything there is
to learn.’ Bartho is interested in
crossover projects. Every month
he organizes the so-called
Jampotpourri in the WaterFront
café, in which conservatoire
students from all courses are
invited to participate. ‘I don’t
want to limit myself to one
musical style. Hopefully, other
students feel the same way.
Why shouldn’t a jazz guitarist
or a classical brass player be
able to play in a pop band? Of
course, it takes time to get used
to each other, but we can learn
from each other. In addition
to perfecting your technique,
listening to other musical styles
is one of the things that you can
do at a conservatoire like this.’
Jiří Kylián en Sabine
Kupferberg op de RDA
Geregeld brengen bekende dansers en choreografen
uit binnen- en buitenland een bezoek aan de
Rotterdamse Dansacademie (RDA) – bijvoorbeeld
gedeelte instuderen van A Way A Lone, een stuk van
16 mei a.s. in de Rotterdamse Schouwburg. Speciaal
A Way A Lone (1998) aan haar repertoire mag toevoegen.
Well known dancers and choreographers, from
the Netherlands and abroad, regularly visit the
Rotterdam Dance Academy (RDA) to give guest
classes. They also take part in a series called Meet
the artist, to meet students and to answer their
questions. The RDA recently welcomed the prominent
dance personalities Jiří Kylián and Sabine
Kupferberg.
Under direction of Sabine Kupferberg, for thirty years
an important dancer of the Nederlands Dans Theater
(NDT), students of the Rotterdam Dance Academy will
rehearse a part of Jiři Kylián’s A Way A Lone. This piece
was originally performed by NDT III, a group founded
by Kylián in 1991 for dancers of 40 years and older. It
will be included in the programme of the third edition
of Body of Work, a collective benefit performance
staged by the RDA and the Rotterdam Conservatoire
(RC), on 15 and 16 May in the Rotterdamse
Schouwburg. Specially for this occasion, Kylián, who
last year celebrated his thirty-year association with the
NDT, has choreographed an introduction for his piece.
To that end he worked with RDA students on several
occasions in the studios of the RDA.
The RDA feels especially honoured that they may
add a part of A Way A Lone (1998) to their repertoire.
Earlier pupils of the Havo voor Muziek en Dans – a
preparatory training of the RDA and RC – rehearsed a
portion of Bella Figura (1995), also a piece by Kylián.
As part of a Meet the artist, Sabine Kupferberg – partner
and muse of Kylián – was a guest at the RDA on 31
January to answer questions and meet RDA students.
Rik Kraak wint/wins Erasmus Jazz Prijs 2006
Basgitarist Rik Kraak heeft de Erasmus Jazz Prijs
2006 gewonnen.
vijf kandidaten. Naast Kraak en Dirkson waren dat
Marloes Jager (zang), Salle de Jonge (drums) en Toni
Tirado Mora (elektrische gitaar). Aan de eerste prijs is
een bedrag verbonden van € 750, aan de tweede prijs
€ 250.
De jury bestond dit jaar uit oud-recensent Bert
Jansma, muzikant Arnoud Gerritse, programmeur
Hans de Lange en radiomaker Hans Mantel. Namens
Verkroost, trompettist Nico Scheepers, saxofonist Bart
Wirtz, drummer Ruben van Rompaey en trombonist
Louk Boudesteijn.
Slobodan Trkulja.
Bass guitarist Rik Kraak has won the Erasmus
Jazz Prijs 2006. In the finals, on Sunday January
29th in the Doelencafé in Rotterdam, he defeated
his opponent, double bassist Hugo Dirksen. The
Erasmus Jazz Prijs is an annual competition for
students from the Rotterdam Jazz Academy of the
Rotterdam Conservatoire. Candidates are nominated
by main subjects teachers from the Jazz course.
For the first time in the competition’s eleven-year
history, five contenders, rather than four, competed
for the Erasmus Jazz Prijs. In addition to Kraak and
Dirkson, they were Marloes Jager (vocals), Salle de
Jonge (drums), and Toni Tirado Mora (electric guitar).
The first prize is € 750, the second prize € 250.
The jury this year consisted of the former critic Bert
Jansma, musician Arnoud Gerritse, artistic manager
Hans de Lange and radio producer Hans Mantel. On
behalf of the board of the Stichting Vrienden (Friends’
Foundation) of the Rotterdam Conservatoire, which
created the Erasmus Jazz Prijs in 1996, Cees Wetsema
served as the chair of the jury.
Previous winners of the Erasmus Jazz Prijs include
trumpeter Jan van Duikeren, singer Xandra Verkroost,
trumpeter Nico Scheepers, saxophonist Bart Wirtz,
drummer Ruben van Rompaey, and trombonist Louk
Boudesteijn. The seventh competition, in 2002, had
two first-prize winners: pianist Dimitar Bodurov and
drummer Jasper van Hulten. The three most recent
competitions were won by guitarist Eelco van de
Meeberg, saxophonist Thijs van Milligen, and saxophonist
Slobodan Trkulja.
Miranda Briggeman (20)
uit Rockanje, Nederland
Studente conservatorium,
Rotterdam Academy for Classical Music,
hoofdvak trompet,
tweedejaars
Waarom heb je gekozen voor
het conservatorium?
‘Ik kom uit een echte muziekfamilie.
Mijn vader speelt piano
en trompet en hij dirigeert, mijn
moeder speelt saxofoon en mijn
zusje speelt trompet, net als ik.
En voor haar opleiding – ze zit op
een mbo theaterschool – zingt
ze veel. Van m’n 5de tot m’n 9de
heb ik piano gespeeld. In die tijd
kon ik geen noot lezen; ik deed
alles op mijn gehoor en uit mijn
hoofd. Toen de muziek moeilijker
werd, ging dat niet meer, en
ben ik gestopt met piano. Twee
jaar heb ik niets aan muziek
gedaan. Vervolgens wilde ik
saxofoon gaan spelen, maar daar
waren mijn handen te klein voor.
Trompet leek me ook leuk. Na
eerst een half jaar les te hebben
gehad van mijn vader, ben ik naar
een plaatselijke muziekschool
gegaan. Daar leerde ik ook
noten lezen. Na een tijdje, ik zat
inmiddels in de derde klas van
de havo in Hellevoetsluis, vond
ik er niks meer aan; ik studeerde
ook niet meer. Toen hoorde ik
van de vooropleiding van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium. Dat
leek me wel wat. Ik ben keihard
gaan studeren om toegelaten te
worden tot de juniorenklas, om
daarna naar die vooropleiding
over te kunnen stappen. Dat is
allemaal gelukt. Ik kreeg meteen
les van André Heuvelman, mijn
huidige hoofdvakdocent op het
conservatorium. Nadat ik in de
vierde klas was blijven zitten, ben
ik overgestapt naar de Havo voor
Muziek en Dans.’
En waarom is het Rotterdam
geworden?
‘De juniorenklas, de vooropleiding
en de havo hier waren
me heel goed bevallen, dus lag
het voor de hand om auditie
te doen bij het Rotterdams
Conservatorium. Ik heb ook nergens
anders auditie gedaan.’
En?
‘Ik vind het hartstikke leuk!
Inmiddels heb ik heel wat vrienden
op het conservatorium en ik
kan het met alle docenten goed
vinden. Verder heb ik gewoon
heel veel plezier in muziek maken.’
Wat wil je later worden?
‘Over de toekomst heb ik nog
helemaal niet nagedacht. Ik zit op
het conservatorium om te kijken
hoe ver ik kan komen. Als mijn
niveau blijft stijgen, ga ik zeker
verder in de muziek. Mocht dat
niet lukken, dan ga ik gewoon
wat anders doen. Overigens ben
ik absoluut geen solo-mens, maar
ik zou wel graag ik een orkest
willen spelen.’
Heb je naast je studie tijd voor
andere dingen?
‘Sinds acht jaar is sterrenkunde
mijn grote hobby. Door de
komeet Hale-Bopp ben ik naar de
lucht gaan kijken. Overdag ben
ik met muziek bezig, de avonden
zijn voor de sterren. En op maandagmiddag
geef ik trompetles bij
een muziekvereniging.’
Wat is je favoriete plek in
Rotterdam?
‘In Rotterdam heb ik niet echt
een favoriete plek – of het zou
het conservatorium moeten zijn.
Graag zit ik met mijn sterrenkijker
op een mooi plekje in de natuur.
Of op het strand van Rockanje.’
Portrait
Miranda Briggeman (20)
from Rockanje, the Netherlands
Conservatoire student
Rotterdam Academy for Classical Music,
main subject trumpet,
second year
Why did you choose to attend
the Conservatoire?
‘I come from a very musical
family. My father plays the piano
and the trumpet, and he also
conducts. My mother plays the
saxophone, and my sister plays
the trumpet, like I do. She is now
studying at a mbo theatre school,
and she sings a lot as part of
her studies. Between the ages
of 5 and 9, I played the piano. I
couldn’t read music at all then; I
did everything by ear and from
memory. But when the music
started getting more difficult,
that method didn’t work any
more, so I stopped playing piano.
For two years, I didn’t do anything
with music. Then I decided that
I wanted to play the saxophone,
but my hands were too small. The
trumpet also appealed to me. My
father taught me for half a year,
and then I went to a local music
school. That is where I learned
to read music. By the time that I
was in the third year of the havo
(high school) in Hellevoetsluis, I
just wasn’t enjoying it any more. I
had stopped studying. And then
I heard about the Rotterdam
Conservatoire’s preparatory
course. That did appeal to me.
I began to work really hard in
order to be admitted to the junior
class, and from there, to be able
to transfer into the preparatory
course. And that is what happened.
Right away, I was taking
classes with André Heuvelman,
who is now my main subject
teacher at the conservatoire.
When I didn’t pass the fourth
year, I transferred over to the
Havo voor Muziek en Dans.’
And why did you choose
Rotterdam?
‘Everything had gone so well
for me in the junior class, the
preparatory course and the havo
here in Rotterdam. So it seemed
natural to do an audition at the
Rotterdam Conservatoire. I didn’t
do an audition anywhere else.’
And?
‘I think it’s great! I’ve made lots of
friends at the conservatoire, and I
get along with all of my teachers.
And I just really enjoy playing
music.’
What would you like to be
later?
‘I haven’t really thought about
the future yet. I am studying at
the conservatoire to see how
far I can go. If my skills continue
to improve, then I’ll definitely
continue with music. And if that
doesn’t work out, then I’ll just
go do something else. I know
that I am definitely not a soloist,
but I would love to play in an
orchestra.’
Do you have time for anything
else, besides your studies?
‘Astronomy has been a serious
hobby of mine for eight years.
The Hale-Bopp comet got me
interested in looking at the sky.
During the day, I play music, the
evenings are for the stars. And on
Monday afternoons, I give trumpet
lessons at a music association.’
What is your favourite place in
Rotterdam?
‘In Rotterdam I don’t really have
a favourite place – or it should be
the conservatoire. I like to sit with
my telescope in a nice place out
in nature. Or on Rockanje’s beach.’
André Heuvelman: ‘Discipline, discipline en nog eens discipline.’ / ‘Discipline, discipline, and once more, discipline.’
oud-student, nu docent / former student, now teacher
Tot het docentencorps van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium
behoren meerdere oud-studenten.
André Heuvelman is een
van hen. De hoofdvakdocent
trompet van de Rotterdam
Academy for Classical Music
André Heuvelman (geboren in
1966) heeft naast zijn docentschap
een druk bestaan als
solo-trompettist van het
Rotterdams Philharmonisch
Orkest. Verder is hij lid van het
Nederlands Blazers Ensemble en
Combattimento Consort. Als solist
treedt Heuvelman regelmatig
voor het voetlicht met diverse
(kamer)orkesten, zoals het Radio
Symphonie Orkest en Nieuw
Sinfonietta Amsterdam. Als solist
maakte hij concertreizen naar
Engeland, Frankrijk, Oostenrijk,
de Verenigde Staten, Colombia
en de Nederlandse Antillen.
Ondanks zijn strakke speelschema,
vindt Heuvelman
genoeg tijd zijn studenten
gepassioneerd te stimuleren en
te motiveren; hij verwacht dan
ook veel van hen. ‘Discipline,
discipline en nog eens discipline,
maar daarnaast ook ambachtelijkheid
en avontuurlijkheid.
Én ze moeten hun tijd op het
conservatorium gebruiken om
kennis te maken en samen te
werken met mensen uit andere
studierichtingen en disciplines,
zoals slagwerkers, wereldmusici
en dansers.’
Maar, vertelt Heuvelman, er is
ook ruimte voor creativiteit en
fantasie. ‘Je kunt als musicus je
pas vrijheid veroorloven als de
techniek in orde is. Belangrijk is
ook dat studenten hun eigenheid
en muzikale identiteit
ontwikkelen. Daarom wil ik dat
iedereen veel concerten bezoekt
en onderzoek doet naar alle
mogelijke opvattingen over
stukken.’ Heuvelman stimuleert
het opdoen van podiumervaring.
‘Veel spelen in veel verschillende
orkesten, meedoen aan
concoursen en optreden met de
trompetklas is niet alleen een
goede voorbereiding op het
professionele leven, maar ook
voor het opbouwen van een
netwerk, waaruit je later weer
kunt putten.’
In december 2005 waren
de trompetstudenten van
Heuvelman te horen en te zien
in het koperblazersensemble
Codarts Brass Group. Onder de
naam It’s Christmas time! speelde
het ensemble onder leiding
van Heuvelman en Pierre Volders
(hoofdvakdocent trombone)
in verschillende plaatsen in het
land. ‘Een succesvol project,
vooral ook omdat we de middag
voorafgaand aan een concert
een masterclass verzorgden
voor jonge koperblazers van
muziekscholen. Dat is een goede
manier om jong talent te interesseren
voor het Rotterdams
Conservatorium. Iedereen was
daar erg enthousiast over en ik
hoop dit jaar weer zo’n project te
kunnen doen.’
Benieuwd waar André
Heuvelman binnenkort
optreedt? Kijk even op www.
andreheuvelman.com.
Many former students are now
members of the faculty of
the Rotterdam Conservatoire.
André Heuvelman is one of
them. Heuvelman, a main
subject trumpet teacher at
the Rotterdam Academy for
Classical Music, studied with Ad
van Zon. He completed his studies
in 1989 and graduated cum
laude. After that, he didn’t stay
away for long. He has now been
teaching at the conservatoire
and the Havo voor Muziek en
Dans for more than ten years.
In addition to teaching, André
Heuvelman (born in 1966) has
a busy life as a solo trumpeter
with the Rotterdams
Philharmonisch Orkest. He
is also a member of the
Nederlands Blazers Ensemble
and Combattimento Consort.
Heuvelman also regularly
performs as a soloist with a
variety of (chamber) orchestras,
such as Radio Symphonie
Orkest and Nieuw Sinfonietta
Amsterdam. As a soloist, he
travelled to give concerts in
England, France, Austria, the
United States, Colombia and the
Dutch Antilles.
Despite his busy performance
schedule, Heuvelman finds
enough time to encourage and
motivate his students with passion;
he also expects a lot from
them. ‘Discipline, discipline, and
once more, discipline, and then
professionalism and an adventurous
spirit as well. And they
should use their time at the
conservatoire to get to know
and to work together with people
from different courses and
disciplines, like percussionists,
world musicians and dancers.’
André
Heuvelman
But, Heuvelman says, there is
also room for creativity and
fantasy. ‘As a musician, you
can only really permit yourself
freedom once you have solid
technical skills. It is also important
that students develop their
own individual musical character
and identity. That is why I
want everyone to attend lots of
concerts and to explore diverse
opinions about pieces of music.’
Heuvelman encourages students
to get stage experience.
‘Playing as often as possible
with different orchestras, taking
part in festivals, and performing
with the trumpet class is not
only a good preparation for the
professional world, but it also
builds up a network which will
be useful to you in the future.’
In December 2005, Heuvelman’s
trumpet students performed
in the brass ensemble Codarts
Brass Group. Using the name It’s
Christmas time!, the ensemble
played under the direction of
Heuvelman and Pierre Volders
(main subject teacher trombone)
in a variety of locations
throughout the Netherlands.
‘A successful project, especially
since we visited music schools
in the afternoon and gave
master classes to young brass
musicians. That is a good way
to get young talent interested
in the Rotterdam Conservatoire.
Everyone was very enthusiastic
about it, and I hope that we
can do another similar project
this year.’
Heuvelman is performing in
the near future? Visit www.
gehore. Het concertprogramma bestaat uit werken van
Antonio Vivaldi, Alfred Schnittke, Arcangelo Corelli en
Michael Tippett.
Stegenga is hoofdvakdocent cello.
Gordan Nikolić is tevens professor aan het Royal College
of Music en aan de Guildhall School of Music, beide
in Londen. In september 2004 is hij benoemd tot
concertmeester/muzikaal leider van het Nederlands
Kamerorkest. Overigens speelt hij ook met onder
meer het Rotterdams Philharmonisch orkest. Herre Jan
lunchconcert. Dan treden alleen studenten van Nikolić
Muziek aan de basis
Music in primary education
Na de succesvolle eerste editie
van vorig jaar wordt nu voor de
tweede keer de zomercursus
Muziek aan de Basis georganiseerd.
De cursus is bedoeld voor
docerende musici en leraren
in het basisonderwijs die hun
kennis en vaardigheden op
het gebied van lesgeven aan
(grote) groepen kinderen willen
bijspijkeren. Centraal staat de algemene
muzikale vorming van
de kinderen. De cursus vindt
plaats van 3 tot en met 8 juli a.s.
Verder zijn er vier studieweekeinden,
in september, oktober
en november.
De vraag naar mensen die
op een muziekschool voor
meerdere taken kunnen worden
ingezet, wordt steeds groter.
Ook veranderen de lesprogramma’s.
Zo worden in voortrajecten
tegenwoordig meer
mogelijkheden geboden dan
de traditionele les algemene
muzikale vorming. Verder geldt
dat muziekschooldocenten
steeds vaker een rol spelen in
buitenschoolse activiteiten en
projecten, wat van hen een andere
manier van werken vraagt.
Daarom heeft het Rotterdams
Conservatorium in samenwerking
met de Gehrels Vereniging
de zomercursus Muziek aan
de Basis ontwikkeld. De cursus
richt zich op kennis en vaardigheden
met betrekking tot
het geven van muziekles aan
(grote) groepen leerlingen van
de basisschool. Vaardigheden
die getraind worden hebben
betrekking op onder meer het
lesgeven zelf, advisering van
zowel leerlingen als het eigen
team, invoering van de lesmethode
en dienstverlening vanuit
de muziekschool.
Het lesprogramma is opgebouwd
rondom het zogenoemde
klank-vorm-betekenismodel,
dat als uitgangspunt dient voor
de inhoud van de algemene
muzikale vorming. De muzikale
inhoud van het lesprogramma
wordt aangeboden in vormen
van muzikaal gedrag. De koppeling
tussen inhoud en gedrag
vormt de rode draad in het
cursusmateriaal en de colleges,
waardoor afwisselende lessen
ontstaan. Wie de cursus succesvol
afrondt, ontvangt het certi-
fi caat Docentschap Algemene
Muzikale Vorming of het
certifi caat Vakspecialist Muziek
Primair Onderwijs (afhankelijk
van de vooropleiding).
De docenten die de zomercursus
Muziek aan de Basis
verzorgen, hebben allen veel
ervaring in het muziekschoolonderwijs,
het basisonderwijs
en de opleiding voor leraren
basisonderwijs. Enkele namen:
Elk Doekes, Marjanka van
Maurik, Leo Aussems en Michel
Hogenes.
Given the success of the fi rst
summer course, Muziek aan
de Basis (Music in primary
education) is being off ered for
a second time this year. The
course is intended both for
musicians who teach and for
primary school teachers who
are interested in brushing up
their knowledge and skills in the
area of teaching (large) groups
of children. The course emphasizes
general musical education
for children and will take
place from the 3rd through the
8th of July. There are also four
study weekends, in September,
October and November.
The demand for people who
can be called on to fulfi ll a
variety of tasks in music schools
is continually growing. The
curriculum is also changing. In
preparatory courses today, a
greater breadth of possibilities
beyond the traditional class in
general music education are
being off ered. Moreover, tea-
chers in music schools are more
often being asked to play roles
in extracurricular activities and
projects, and this requires them
to function in new and diff erent
ways.
In recognition of these realities,
the Rotterdam Conservatoire,
in cooperation with the Gehrels
Vereniging, has developed the
summer course Muziek aan
de Basis. The course is focused
on developing knowledge
and skills that are relevant to
teaching music classes to (large)
groups of elementary school
students. The course deals with
developing a range of skills such
as teaching classes, advising
both students and members of
the faculty team, implementing
teaching methods, and providing
services off ered by the
music school.
The curriculum is constructed
around the so-called soundform-meaning
model, which
provides the initial assumptions
for the content of general musical
education. The curriculum’s
musical content is communicated
through musical actions.
The link between subject matter
and action is the connecting
thread throughout the curriculum
and lectures, and it
results in a variety of lessons.
The individual who successfully
completes the course receives
the certifi cate Docentschap
Algemene Muzikale Vorming
(Teacher’s Certifi cate of General
Music Education) or the
certifi cate Vakspecialist Muziek
Primair Onderwijs (Music
Specialist in Primary Education)
(depending on the individual’s
professional training and
credentials).
The teachers who give the summer
course all have experience
in music school education,
primary school education and
the programme that certifi es
primary school teachers. A few
names: Elk Doekes, Marjanka
van Maurik, Leo Aussems and
Michel Hogenes.
Hij werd geboren in Port
Lavaca, Texas, waar boeren
en cowboys de meerderheid
vormen. Toen hij begon met
dansen, was hij 19 jaar. Drie
jaar later maakte hij deel
uit van de fameuze Martha
Graham Dance Company in
New York. Sinds 1999 is hij als
docent eigentijdse dans verbonden
aan de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie. Zijn naam:
Mario Camacho. Een portret.
Voordat hij op 19-jarige leeftijd
begon met dansen, was hij een
fervente sporter, vertelt Mario
Camacho (1962). ‘Football,
basketbal; al die typisch
Amerikaanse sporten heb ik beoefend.
Ook liep ik de 100 meter
horden.’ Lachend: ‘En snel!’
Hij was tevens geïnteresseerd in
theater. ‘In het laatste jaar van
de middelbare school stelde
een docent me voor auditie te
doen voor een musical. Om me
daarop voor te bereiden, nam
ik danslessen. De auditiecommissie
bleek behoorlijk onder
de indruk van mijn danscapaciteiten.
Ik haalde de laatste
ronde, maar werd uiteindelijk
niet geselecteerd.’ Hetzelfde jaar
ging Camacho met de toneelklas
van zijn middelbare school
naar New York om musicals te
bezoeken. ‘Ik zag A Chorus Line
en dacht: Dat wil ik ook!’
Na het voltooien van de middelbare
school ging Camacho via
een uitwisselingsprogramma
naar Duitsland. Hij woonde een
jaar bij een gezin in de buurt
van Frankfurt, waar hij naar het
gymnasium ging. Weer terug
in de Verenigde Staten koos
hij voor de opleiding muziektheater
aan de Texas Christian
University in Fort Worth. Met
zingen en acteren had hij
weinig moeite, vertelt hij. Om
zijn danstechniek bij te schaven,
meldde hij zich aan voor een
zomercursus. Daar maakte hij
Docent
Teacher
Mario
Camacho
kennis met eigentijdse dans.
Zijn eerste reactie? ‘Wow, this is
it!’ ‘Muziektheater was nog een
half jaar mijn hoofdvak, daarna
werd het dans. Omdat ik al 19
jaar was, moest ik veel inhalen.
Ik heb tweeënhalf jaar keihard
gewerkt.’
In de zomer vóór zijn laatste
jaar op de universiteit kwam
Camacho op het American
Dance Festival in Durham,
North Carolina, in aanraking
met technieken die hij nog niet
kende. De danstechniek van
Martha Graham sprak hem erg
aan. De basis daarvan wordt
gevormd door het spannen
en het loslaten van spieren in
het lichaam, ingegeven door
het natuurlijke ritme van de
ademhaling. ‘Op dat festival
moedigden heel veel mensen
me aan om naar New York te
gaan. Ik had een gesprek met
mijn ouders en ik kreeg een
beurs. En drie jaar nadat ik was
begonnen met dansen, werd
ik geselecteerd voor de Martha
Graham Dance Company – door
Martha Graham zelf.’ Met een
onderbreking van een jaar
maakte hij van 1986 tot 1999
deel uit van dit gezelschap.
In de zomer van 1999 kwam
Camacho met zijn vriend naar
Nederland. Hij wilde lessen
gaan volgen op de Rotterdamse
Dansacademie (RDA), die hij
kende uit het verleden, maar
dat was niet mogelijk. Hij liet
zijn cv achter bij een conciërge
– je weet immers maar nooit...
De volgende dag werd hij
gebeld door Cisca van Dijk, destijds
de directeur van de RDA.
Inmiddels is Camacho bezig
aan zijn zevende jaar als RDAdocent.
Drie dagen per week
geeft hij hier les aan eerstejaarsstudenten
(daarnaast is hij twee
dagen per week actief op het
Koninklijk Conservatorium in
Den Haag). ‘Ik heb heel veel
plezier in het werk dat ik doe.’
He was born in Port Lavaca,
Texas, where farmers and
cowboys are in the majority.
He was 19 years old when he
began to dance. Three years
later, he was a member of the
famous Martha Graham Dance
Company in New York. Since
1999, he has been a teacher
of contemporary dance at the
Rotterdam Dance Academy.
His name: Mario Camacho. A
portrait.
Before he started dancing at
the age of 19, he was an avid
athlete, says Mario Camacho
(1962). ‘Football, basketball – I
played all the typical American
sports. I also ran the 100-meter
hurdles.’ He laughs: ‘And fast!’ He
was also interested in theatre.
‘In my last year of high school, a
teacher suggested that I should
audition for a musical. In order
to prepare for that, I took dance
classes. The jury at the audition
was really impressed with my
talent for dance. I made it to the
fi nal round, although I was not
ultimately chosen.’ That same
year, Camacho went with his
high school drama class to New
York to see musicals. ‘I saw A
Chorus Line and thought: I want
to do that too!’
After he fi nished high school,
Camacho went to Germany
on an exchange programme.
He lived with a family near
Frankfurt and attended gymnasium
(a pre-university high
school). Back in the United
States, he decided to major
in musical theatre at Texas
Christian University in Fort
Worth. Singing and acting
weren’t a problem, says
Camacho, but to polish up his
dance technique, he registered
for a summer course. That was
his fi rst exposure to contemporary
dance. His fi rst reaction?
‘Wow, this is it!’ ‘Music theatre
was my major for another half
a year, and then I transferred to
dance. Because I was 19, I had a
lot of catching up to do. For two
and a half years, I really worked
my butt off .’
In the summer before his fi nal
year at the university, Camacho
was at the American Dance
Festival in Durham, North
Carolina. He encountered dance
styles there that he had never
seen. The dance technique of
Martha Graham really spoke
to him. The foundation of the
technique is the sequential
contracting and releasing of
muscles in the body, guided
by the breath’s natural rhythm.
‘At that festival, a lot of people
encouraged me to go to New
York. I talked with my parents,
and I got a scholarship. Three
years after I started to dance, I
was selected to join the Martha
Graham Dance Company – by
Martha Graham herself.’ With an
interruption of one year, he was
a member of the company from
1986 until 1999.
In the summer of 1999, Camacho
came to the Netherlands with his
boyfriend. He was familiar with
the Rotterdam Dance Academy
(RDA), and he wanted to take
classes here, but it wasn’t possible.
He left his CV behind with
a doorman – because you never
know... The next day he got a
telephone call from Cisca van
Dijk, who was then the director
of the RDA. Camacho is now in
his seventh year as a teacher
at the RDA. He gives classes
three days a week to fi rst-year
students (he also teaches at
the Royal Conservatoire in The
Hague two days a week). ‘I really
enjoy the work that I’m doing
so much.’
Improvisatie / Improvisation =
Michael Schumacher
Als het over dansimprovisatie
gaat, kom je bijna als vanzelf
terecht bij Michael Schumacher,
een absolute autoriteit op dit
terrein. In februari was hij voor
de vierde keer een aantal weken
als gastdocent werkzaam op de
Rotterdamse Dansacademie. De
komende maanden geeft hij les
en/of treedt hij op in onder meer
Zwitserland, Canada en China.
Een nadere kennismaking met
een kleine grote man.
Michael Schumacher kwam
tien jaar geleden, in 1996, naar
Nederland. ‘Dit land, en in het
bijzonder de stad Amsterdam,
past bij mij. De balans is hier in
evenwicht, het is hier niet chaotisch.
New York werkte me op
mijn zenuwen – te veel business,
te weinig leven. Daar wilde ik
niet langer wonen.’
De wieg van Schumacher stond
in Spokane, Washington State.
Daar is hij in 1961 geboren. Hij
groeide op in Lewiston, Idaho.
Als kind sportte hij veel; van
tennis tot basketbal (‘ik leerde
snel’). Na een paar jaar actief te
zijn geweest in het muziektheater
(‘optreden voor een publiek
vond ik geweldig’), ging hij op
16-jarige leeftijd danslessen
nemen; ballet en moderne dans.
Schumacher was 18 jaar toen
hij naar New York vertrok om
aan The Juilliard School dans te
gaan studeren. ‘In had wel wat
podiumervaring, maar bezat
nauwelijks danstechniek.’ Maar
toch...
Tijdens het laatste jaar van zijn
opleiding kreeg Schumacher zijn
eerste baan, bij Feld Ballet. Na
drie jaar verhuisde hij naar Twyla
Tharp Dance, waaraan hij twee
jaar verbonden was.
Vervolgens wilde hij weg uit
New York, weg uit de Verenigde
Staten. Hij kwam naar Europa,
waar hij achtereenvolgens danste
bij Lisbon Dance Company
(Mark Haim), Ballett Frankfurt
(William Forsythe) en Pretty
Ugly Dance Company (Amanda
Miller). ‘De vijf jaar bij Forsythe
beschouw ik als het hoogtepunt
van mijn carrière als danser. Het
was echt fantastisch om met die
man te werken. Hij stimuleerde
zijn dansers enorm om bij te
dragen aan het creatieve proces.’
Inmiddels runt Schumacher
zijn eigen ‘eenmanszaak’.
Dansimprovisatie interesseert
hem het meest, vertelt hij.
‘Omdat deze vorm van dans veel
gemeen heeft met ons dagelijkse
leven. Ook daarin moeten
we steeds keuzes maken en
omgaan met allerlei obstakels.
Het is tevens een intelligente
manier om te blijven dansen.
Theoretisch kan ik dit mijn hele
leven blijven doen. Dat wil ik
ook, want dans maakt deel uit
van mijn identiteit, van mijn
bestaan.’
Tot zijn spijt moet Schumacher
constateren dat dansimprovisatie
een achterstand van dertig
jaar heeft op muziekimprovisatie.
Liefhebbers komen dan
ook nauwelijks aan hun trekken.
Magpie Music Dance Company,
een in Amsterdam gevestigd
improvisatiecollectief van verschillende
podiumkunstenaars,
waarmee Schumacher geregeld
samenwerkt, verzorgt af en toe
een voorstelling. En op de laatste
drie edities van het Holland
Dance Festival heeft Samuel
Wuersten dansimprovisatie
op het programma gezet, zegt
Schumacher. ‘Dat vind ik heel
vooruitstrevend.’
When it comes to dance improvisation,
you are bound to
run into Michael Schumacher,
an absolute authority in the
fi eld. In February, for the fourth
time, he was at the Rotterdam
Dance Academy for a number
of weeks as a guest teacher. In
the coming months, he’ll either
be teaching or performing in
Switzerland, Canada and China.
An introduction to a little big
man.
Michael Schumacher came to
the Netherlands ten years ago,
in 1996. ‘This country, and especially
the city of Amsterdam,
really suits me. The balance here
is harmonious, there isn’t such
chaos. New York really got on
my nerves – too much business,
too little life. I didn’t want to live
there any more.’
Schumacher was born in 1961
in Spokane, in the state of
Washington. He grew up in
Lewiston, Idaho. As a child, he
was active in sports, from tennis
to basketball (‘I picked things
up quickly’). After appearing for
a couple of years in musicals
(‘I loved performing in front of
an audience’), he started taking
dance classes – ballet and
modern dance – at the age of
16. Schumacher was 18 when
he left for New York to study
dance at The Julliard School.
‘I had some stage experience
but very little dance technique.’
But still...
During his fi nal year at Julliard,
Schumacher got his fi rst job
with Feld Ballet. After three
years, he moved on to Twyla
Tharp Dance, where he spent
two years.
At that point, he wanted to
leave New York and the United
States. He came to Europe,
where he successively danced
with Lisbon Dance Company
(Mark Haim), Ballett Frankfurt
(William Forsythe) and Pretty
Ugly Dance Company (Amanda
Miller). ‘I consider the fi ve years
with Forsythe to be the real
high point of my career as a
dancer. It was fantastic to work
with that man. He really encourages
his dancers to contribute
to the creative process.’
Now Schumacher is running
his own ‘one man shop’. Dance
improvisation interests him
the most, he says. ‘Because this
form of dance has so much in
common with daily life. In life,
as well as in dance improvisation,
you have to make choices
and to deal with all kinds of
obstacles. It is also an intelligent
way to keep dancing.
Theoretically, I could continue
doing this for the rest of my life.
And that’s what I want to do,
because dance is really part of
my identity, my existence.’
Schumacher regrets having
to acknowledge that dance
improvisation is thirty years behind,
as compared with musical
improvisation. As a result, fans
of dance improvisation have to
look further for performances.
Magpie Music Dance Company,
an improvisation collective
of performing artists based
in Amsterdam, with which
Schumacher regularly works,
occasionally organizes performances.
And during the last
three Holland Dance Festivals,
Samuel Wuersten has made a
place for improvisation in the
programme, says Schumacher.
‘I think that’s very progressive.’
Codarts en haar oud-studenten
Net als veel andere hogescholen
onderkent Codarts, Hogeschool
voor de Kunsten het belang van
het onderhouden van contact
met oud-studenten ofwel
alumni. Codarts werkt nu aan het
opzetten van een alumnibeleid.
Daarbij wordt zo veel mogelijk
rekening gehouden met wat haar
oud-studenten van dat beleid
verwachten.
Codarts’ alumnibeleid staat op
dit moment nog in de kinderschoenen,
maar de hogeschool
timmert flink aan de weg om
hier snel verandering in te
brengen. Zo zijn al vele tientallen
alumni opgenomen in een
database. Verder worden met
de twee onderwijsinstituten
van de hogeschool – het
Rotterdams Conservatorium en
de Rotterdamse Dansacademie
– afspraken gemaakt om een
gestructureerd beleid op te kunnen
zetten.
De Voortgezette opleiding
Danstherapie fungeert als pilot.
Deze opleiding wil oud-studenten
betrekken bij de evaluatie
van het studieprogramma en
hen gastlessen laten verzorgen.
Alumni zouden ook stageplaatsen
kunnen aanbieden aan
huidige studenten. Daarnaast zou
de opleiding graag een keer per
jaar een reünie organiseren.
Gezien het geheel eigen karakter
van de Voortgezette opleiding
Danstherapie zal het alumnibeleid
van de overige opleidingen
van de dansacademie, en ook
dat van de opleidingen van het
conservatorium, enigszins anders
worden vormgegeven.
Waarom alumnibeleid?
Waarom is het belangrijk voor
een hogeschool om contact
te onderhouden met oud-studenten
en – andersom – voor
oud-studenten met hun opleidingsinstituut?
Het aangaan van
een ‘levenslange’ relatie kan waardevol
zijn voor beide partijen.
Buitengewone prestaties of een
succesvolle loopbaan van een
alumnus kunnen een positieve
bijdrage leveren aan het imago
van het conservatorium of de
dansacademie, en zo ook aan het
imago van de hogeschool. Verder
zijn oud-studenten mogelijke
afnemers van vervolgstudies en
van bij- en nascholing en potentiële
deelnemers aan symposia,
congressen enzovoort.
Onder meer omdat oud-studenten
dankzij het alumnibeleid
in contact kunnen blijven met
medestudenten, of opnieuw met
hen in contact kunnen komen,
is het interessant voor hen om
de hogeschool niet uit het oog
te verliezen. Verder worden ze
op de hoogte gehouden van
ontwikkelingen in hun vakgebied
en kunnen ze deelnemen aan
speciale workshops, congressen
en symposia.
Ben je oud-student van het
Rotterdams Conservatorium of
de Rotterdamse Dansacademie
en is jouw naam nog niet
opgenomen in de alumnidatabase,
meld je dan aan op www.
codarts.nl – dan kan ook jij een
bijdrage leveren aan het alumnibeleid.
Codarts and its former students
As with most universities,
Codarts, University of Professional
Arts Education, recognizes the
importance of maintaining
contacts with former students or
alumni. Codarts is now working
to establish a policy to govern
alumni relations. The expectations
that former students will
have of such a policy is being
given careful consideration as the
policy is formulated.
Codarts’ policy on alumni relations
is still in its infancy, but the
university is working diligently
to develop it quickly. A database
with dozens of alumni has been
created. Both institutes within
the school – the Rotterdam
Conservatoire and the Rotterdam
Dance Academy – have agreed to
work on creating formal policies
on alumni relations.
The Postgraduate Programme
in Dance Therapy is serving as
a pilot. This programme aspires
to involve former students in
evaluating the curriculum and
also to let them teach guest
classes. Alumni may also be in a
position to offer internships to
current students. And the course
also wants to organize a reunion
once a year.
Because the Postgraduate
Programme in Dance Therapy has
its own very unique character,
the alumni policies of the other
dance programmes within the
dance academy, as well as the
various courses in the conservatoire,
will be different.
Why a policy regarding alumni?
Why is it important for a school to
maintain contact with its former
students and – conversely – for
former students to maintain contact
with their alma mater? The
answer is that forging a life-long
relationship can be very valuable
for both parties.
An extraordinary achievement
or very successful career by a
former student can make a positive
contribution to the image of
the conservatoire or the dance
academy, as well as to that of
the school. Former students are
also potential candidates for
postgraduate programmes and
other forms of continuing study;
they are also possible participants
in symposia, conferences, and
so forth.
A policy to govern and stimulate
relations with alumni makes it
possible for former students to
stay in touch with their fellow
students, or to renew contacts
with them, and that is a compelling
reason for alumni to maintain
contact with the school. They
can also be kept abreast of developments
in their professional
area of expertise, and they can
participate in special workshops,
conferences and symposia.
If you are a former student of the
Rotterdam Conservatoire or the
Rotterdam Dance Academy and
your name has not been added
to the alumni database, you can
add it by visiting www.codarts.
nl – and you too can make a
contribution to the developing
alumni policy.
