• Diatom populations are variable and may need to be interpreted at the species<br />
level of identification and at an individual site and season scale.<br />
• Routine monitoring of periphytic diatoms in the <strong>Hawkesbury</strong>-<strong>Nepean</strong> using the<br />
methodology of Growns (1999) has now ceased (A. Kotlash (SCA) pers. comm.<br />
2008).<br />
