Canonical correlation avoids these difficulties. We selected 18 of the most important risk factors and 14 of the most important ERM tool factors to represent their respective maps and applied canonical correlation to the factors. The first five dimensions (canonical variates) captured 93% of the RISK-ERM interrelationship. All yielded satisfying interpretations. The interrelationship is dominated by various aspects of asset risk and tool themes and by product risk and tool themes. Notably, the role of operational risk and tools is relatively minor and diffused among less important dimensions.
