Corpus Linguistics, 2/2,5 CP

This series of lectures introduces students to the field of modern corpus linguistics.
After a brief look at the history of this discipline and its role in modern linguistics, the
lectures will describe how corpora are planned, compiled, annotated and analysed.
Students will also get a chance to familiarise themselves with a number of different
corpora, most notably with those that are of interest in an applied English linguistics
framework, such as the Corpus of International English, the International Corpus of
Learner English, or the SLX Corpus of Classic Sociolinguistic Interviews.
Requirements for credit points: BA: regular participation and written end-of-term
test.
The lecture course is largely based on the following book:
McEnery, Tony; Hardie, Andrew (2012). Corpus Linguistics. Method, Theory and
Practice. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. (strongly recommended for
purchase).

The Grammar of Spoken English, 4 CP

Traditionally, grammar has focussed on the structures of written language. This
seminar aims at describing the characteristics of spoken English, such as deixis,
ellipsis, fronting or the use of tags, but also simultaneous talk, back-channeling,
discourse markers and hedges. Participants will analyse authentic spoken English
and compare its structures to those found in the written genre.
