Asian American Literature, 3 CP

In this course we will read a cross section of Asian American writing – prose, drama,
biography – focusing on the experience of Asian immigrants on the North American
continent. We will look at Asian American constructions of femininity and masculinity,
life in racialized communities and narrations of race and national belonging.
Furthermore, we will consider the impact of various wars (and U.S. involvement in
them) on different Asian American communities. Although we will discuss specific
ethnic and racial groups, the focus will also be the on the context that connects each
of those groups to a shared history. Please buy and read your own copies of Maxine
Hong Kingston, The Woman Warrior, Frank Chin, Donald Duk, Joy Kogawa, Obasan
and Robert Olen Butler, A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain. Additional primary
and secondary materials will be made available via Moodle.
Requirements: attendance and active participation, presentation, written
assignments.
