Andrea Bolnick in South Africa is demonstrating a new and<br />
affordable model to provide “dwellings with dignity” in the slums of the<br />
country. Her model allows people to move out of a dilapidated home and<br />
into a safer, nicer one. Inhabitants no longer worry about unsafe walls<br />
that often go up in flames, or dirt floors that pool with water when the<br />
rains come – or whether they will be allowed to come back to these<br />
communities if their homes are bulldozed in the name of renovation.<br />
Africa<br />
<strong>Ashoka</strong>’s Africa office elected its first Fellow in<br />
1990. Today with 4 offices and Fellows in 17<br />
countries, <strong>Ashoka</strong> Africa is constantly expanding and<br />
developing new Changemaker communities.<br />

In eastern Senegal, Marguerite Thiaw is<br />
combatting child malnutrition and economic inequality<br />
for women with a series of banana-based innovations<br />
that have allowed the women of her village to emerge<br />
as entrepreneurs with a new income stream and new<br />
nutritive baby food.
