Andrea Bolnick in South Africa is demonstrating a new and
affordable model to provide “dwellings with dignity” in the slums of the
country. Her model allows people to move out of a dilapidated home and
into a safer, nicer one. Inhabitants no longer worry about unsafe walls
that often go up in flames, or dirt floors that pool with water when the
rains come – or whether they will be allowed to come back to these
communities if their homes are bulldozed in the name of renovation.
Africa
Ashoka’s Africa office elected its first Fellow in
1990. Today with 4 offices and Fellows in 17
countries, Ashoka Africa is constantly expanding and
developing new Changemaker communities.

In eastern Senegal, Marguerite Thiaw is
combatting child malnutrition and economic inequality
for women with a series of banana-based innovations
that have allowed the women of her village to emerge
as entrepreneurs with a new income stream and new
nutritive baby food.
