Andrea Bolnick in South Africa is demonstrating a new and affordable model to provide “dwellings with dignity” in the slums of the country. Her model allows people to move out of a dilapidated home and into a safer, nicer one. Inhabitants no longer worry about unsafe walls that often go up in flames, or dirt floors that pool with water when the rains come – or whether they will be allowed to come back to these communities if their homes are bulldozed in the name of renovation. Africa Ashoka’s Africa office elected its first Fellow in 1990. Today with 4 offices and Fellows in 17 countries, Ashoka Africa is constantly expanding and developing new Changemaker communities. 354 In eastern Senegal, Marguerite Thiaw is combatting child malnutrition and economic inequality for women with a series of banana-based innovations that have allowed the women of her village to emerge as entrepreneurs with a new income stream and new nutritive baby food.
Jehad Shejaeya in Palestine is developing a model to fund university education for underprivileged students. In lieu of monetary loan reimbursement, the students give back to the community by teaching and mentoring primary and secondary school students in marginalized areas. Middle East & North Africa In 2003 Ashoka began operations in Cairo which currently sources and supports leading social entrepreneurs in the Middle East and north Africa. With 63 Fellows from Egypt, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Kuwait, Lebanon and Jordan, Ashoka’s MENA office is actively searching for cutting -edge ideas in the remaining Arab world countries. 63 In Egypt, Azza Soliman is advocating for a new religious discourse with a special focus on issues pertaining to women’s rights. Through the creation of a multi- sector forum, controversial fatwas on women’s issues are revised and reinterpreted to reflect the changes in society, needs and demands as well as various legal, social and religious aspects, identified by the women themselves through the engagement of different women’s civil society organizations in the forum.
