1 Foreword
Figure 1.1: Example of the EC145
The EC145, certified under the name BK117 C-2, is a twin-engine, multi-purpose helicopter of the 3-4
ton class with up to 12 seats for pilot/s and passengers. It combines EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND
GMBH ® s latest developments, like advanced cockpit design, avionics and sophisticated electrical system
with the rugged and proven design elements of the BK117, as for example the rotor system. The
EC145's hingeless rotor system with its monolithic titanium hub ('System Bölkow') is proven all over
the world. Furthermore, the rotor blades have been improved with respect to higher performance and
lower noise and vibration levels. The use of the variable rotor speed and torque matching system
(VARTOMS), known from the predecessor model BK117 C-1 has been extended. Besides ameliorating
flying comfort, this makes the EC145 the quietest helicopter in its class bringing it to 6.7 EPN dB
below ICAO limits.
In addition to environmental and economical aspects, the rotor system together with high TBO gearbox
and airframe components grant for low maintenance costs and on the other hand, high in-service-time
of the helicopter due to low scheduled maintenance required.
The EC145 is equipped with two powerful and reliable Turbomeca Arriel 1E2 engines which, in combination
with its lifting system, provide outstanding performance and vital power reserves even in oneengine-inoperative
(OEI) scenarios. Twin-engine reliability is complemented by a fully separated fuel
system, a tandem hydraulic system, dual electrical system and redundant lubrication for the main
transmission. Further positive safety aspects of the EC145 are design elements like energy absorbing
fuselage and seats, as well as crash resistant fuel cells. The EC145 allows Cat. A operation up to the
level of performance class 1 and performance class 2 according to JAR-OPS 3.
A wide range of optional equipment, like emergency floats, rescue hoist, SX16 search light, cargo
hook, plus many more is available for the EC145 and can be fitted simultaneously in most cases. Together
with its most versatile cabin layout (utility, comfort, corporate, ...), the EC145 is ready to take up
all sorts of missions, for example survey, transport, EMS, public service, to name a few.
Technical Data
Compared to other helicopters in its class, the EC145 offers a significantly larger cabin, featuring:
• Excellent outside vision for pilot/s, crew and/or passengers
• Roomy cabin with no partitions or protrusions, no center post, no door post
• Unrivalled side loading (no door posts) and rear loading capability
• Flat floor all over the cabin area
Technical Data
The EC145 offers a choice of modern state-of-the-art glass cockpit solutions comprising primary flight
displays (PFD) and NAV displays (ND) as well as a central panel display system (CPDS). All LCD
screens are well arranged on the instrument panel, easy to read even if viewed from an angle and feature
perfect readability in any light conditions. A NVG layout is available as an option. The unique color
coding, warning and information concept helps the pilot/s to collect all relevant parameters while suppressing
presentation of non-relevant information. Additionally, EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND
GMBH ® s unique first limit indicator (FLI) considerably simplifies engine and torque monitoring. Being
relieved from extensive instrument scan without missing vital information, pilots can dedicate more of
their attention to the mission.
4 Recommended Mission Configurations
The following mission configurations are recommended for the EC145. The created packages should
be regarded as a first proposal for customers to evaluate the suitability of the EC145 for their operational
fields. The shown packages comprise a list of mandatory and necessary options and they can be
complemented by further items from the chapter "Further Available Equipment".
The given configurations show a maximum level of compliancy with the detachable parts of the various
options.
The following recommended mission configurations are available:
• EMS
• Offshore
• Police / Parapublic
• Stylence ®
• Utility
The configurations show possible and practicable definitions coming from other experienced customer's
demands. They provide a great adaptation to missions and are not orientated on keeping them
significantly light to promote extraordinary range or endurance values.
Please note that EMS and Offshore configurations include equipment requested by JAR-OPS 3
Amendment 5. They do not cover oxygen equipment and equipment required for over water operation.
As the national operating rules may differ from the JAR-OPS 3 Amendment 5, the operator has to contact
his national authority to assure that the planned equipment configuration is acceptable for the intended
kind of operation.
Performance calculation
All performance mission calculations data used in this document is for information purpose only and
EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND GMBH ® takes no responsibility for the correctness of this information
as far as the applicability to the receiving party’s individual case is concerned. The present use of
the named data shall not be construed as expressly or impliedly granting the receiving party any rights
nor be deemed to constitute any kind of obligation or commitment of EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND
GMBH ® .
Further individual configurations
In chapter 5 the reader will find a list of all available optional equipment suitable for the EC145. He may
choose further items and add them to his favorite configuration. Please note that there are various
items which may be ordered for one helicopter, but their installation at the same time would not be possible
completely or only partly; even a mixture of such items could make sense in specific mission configurations.
A detailed discussion is highly recommended in order to adapt the EC145 to the customer's
wishes and needs and to avoid misunderstandings which could lead to unsatisfactory configurations.
Any modification and/or complement of the proposed mission configuration must be done with the assistance
of a EUROCOPTER Deutschland GmbH® sales representative.
Additionally tactical radios, broadcast, thermal imaging and video surveillance equipment, FLIR systems
and operator consoles as well as NVG equipment can be offered on request.
VIP interiors can be offered tailored to individual needs and tastes resulting from geographical operation
and/or personal preferences.
4.1 Recommended EMS Configuration
Technical Data
This configuration is fitted with EMS equipment for general rescue operation and can be upgraded to
special missions a customer may have.
The shown helicopter configuration is prepared for an inter-hospital transport of one stretcher patient,
a flight crew of two, and a medical crew of two. The helicopter is fitted with the respective items for IFR
operation and fulfils JAR-OPS 3 Amendment 5 requirements of Germany. As the national operating
rules may differ from the JAR-OPS 3 Amendment 5, the operator has to contact its national authority
to assure that the planned equipment configuration is acceptable for the intended kind of operation.
The helicopter can also be used for primary EMS missions and transport up to two patients on stretchers
with two medical persons.
4.2 Recommended Offshore Configuration
Technical Data
This configuration is created for passenger transport missions with two pilots and six passengers from
onshore bases to oil rig platforms. The helicopter is fitted with the respective items for IFR operation
and fulfils JAR-OPS 3 Amendment 5 requirements of Germany. As the national operating rule may differ
from the JAR-OPS 3 Amendment 5, the operator has to contact his national authority to assure that
the planned equipment configuration is acceptable for the intended kind of operation.
It is the operator's responsibility to still add needed survival equipment like life vests, life raft(s), etc. to
fulfill his national/local operational requirements which are not known by EUROCOPTER DEUTSCH-
LAND GMBH ® .
4.3 Recommended Police / Parapublic Configuration
Technical Data
The shown configuration can be used for different tasks a police force may have (search and rescue,
transport of intervention groups or high ranking people). The mission calculation is for a quick reaction
team with two pilots and six specialists who can use both the rescue hoist and the rope down device
to leave the helicopter in an intervention mission. For missions during night, the search light SX16 can
illuminate the scene on ground with white light and IR light.
In order to take into account the variety of missions a police squadron may have, this configuration includes
a dual flight / navigation management system (FMS/NMS) providing full range of navigation and
flight planning features, route databases, creation/storing/modification of routes, creation of flight plan,
performing search and rescue and holding patterns.
5.3 NVG Solutions and Certification
In order to increase mission capabilities and flight safety during night operations, the EC145 can be
fitted with NVG compatible cockpit and cabin layouts as well as exterior lighting.
May 31, 2007, the first certification providing the EC145 with a NVG aided operation capability was
granted from EASA, FAA and TCCA (Canada). Thus Eurocopter is the first Original Equipment Manufacturer
(OEM) to offer this capability to civil operators.
The certification is based on one specific configuration using among others the MEGHAS display system;
suitable night vision goggles are specific goggles with class B filter from well known manufacturers
(at press date, certified goggles are ITT F4949 and NOGALIGHT NL-93).
On customer's request, Eurocopter will develop and certify other configurations and support also night
vision goggle systems from other manufacturer.
Please note that classic night flight capability remains unrestricted.
7 Support Information
7.1 Assets
Proven reliability and availability based on experience
EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND GMBH ® s helicopter production programs have developed a strong
reputation worldwide for being fully committed to providing customers with operational, capable aircraft
that achieve high availability combined with cost-effective support systems. To achieve this record of
performance, EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND GMBH ® has stressed the importance of working together
with its customers to ensure constant feedback on their demonstrated in-service Reliability, Availability
and Maintainability/Testability (RAM) data. The main objective is to reach the most optimized
operational cost ensuring the highest flight safety.
EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND GMBH ® has built and delivered EC145 helicopters for almost ten
years. More than 300 helicopters are in service worldwide. The total flight hours accumulated at the
end of December 2009 are approximately 325,000 Fh. The "lead the fleet" aircraft has accumulated
approximately 5,400 Fh.
7.2 Inspection Program
The Maintenance Program specifies the intervals between maintenance operations that are recommended
by EUROCOPTER DEUTSCHLAND GMBH ® , irrespective of whether they are mandatory or
not.
The program can:
• either be used as is,
• or be adapted by each operator to suit his own specific organization, provided he complies with the
maximum intervals.
The following table provides an overview of all inspections. Scheduled inspections with shorter time
intervals have to be added to those with longer time intervals.
This means, that for example the Periodical Inspection contains the Supplementary Check and the 12-
Month Inspection.
Technical Data
Note
All the "hands-on" aircraft values mentioned here above are given on the basis of a 20,000 flight hours
life cycle. They refer only to the scheduled inspections for the standard helicopter without optional
equipment in accordance with the Master Servicing Manual (MSM).
The announced Man Hours are without incoming flight, work preparation, reworking, servicing, Service
Bulletin implementation and unscheduled maintenance.
As an alternative to the current maintenance program described above, EUROCOPTER DEUTSCH-
LAND GMBH ® provides the Continuous Maintenance Program (CMP). The CMP consists of individual
work packages to be performed each within a defined timeframe. A specific tolerance is effective for
all work packages, which refer to the start and end time of the individual work packages. Thus, this
program allows the continued flight operation without being interrupted by inspections with longer
downtimes. Depending on the yearly flight hours, three different models are available. One program is
applicable for an average flight profile (from 300 Fh up to 600 Fh per year), one for a high-timer flight
profile (more than 600 Fh per year) and one for a low-timer flight profile (less than 300 Fh per year).
Please refer also to the figure below, which shows the allocation of the work packages through one
cycle, using the example of the average flight profile.
Figure 7.1: Example of the average flight profile
The following table provides an overview of all engine inspections. Each inspection has to be performed
for the respective time frame. For example, a large inspection like the 600 Fh inspection does not
contain the 30 Fh, 100 Fh and 300 Fh.
