Holly Begins Reforestation at Gateway Park<br />

By: The <strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>State</strong> Forest Service<br />

On April 6th, the Town of Holly began its effort to replant<br />

trees at Gateway Park. Over 30 volunteers helped with the<br />

replanting effort, which involved the planting of six large trees; three bur oak<br />

and three honeylocust trees. Three additional American elm hybrids, that are<br />

Dutch elm disease resistant, will be planted this spring as well. <strong>May</strong>or Bruce<br />

Roup officially proclaimed April 6th, 2008 as Arbor Day in the Town of Holly<br />

with the reading of the Arbor Day Proclamation. A great deal of appreciation<br />

goes to all of the people who helped with this project. Over 25 4-H youth and<br />

4-H leaders from across Southeastern <strong>Colorado</strong> contributed a helping hand, as<br />

well as Southeastern <strong>Colorado</strong> CSU <strong>Extension</strong> agents from Crowley, Otero,<br />

Baca, Bent, Kiowa, and Prowers Counties. <strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>State</strong> Forest Service<br />

foresters also assisted, providing the tree planting leadership for volunteers.<br />

Over 30 volunteers donated their Sunday afternoon on April 6th to help replant<br />

trees at Gateway Park in Holly. Pictured here are the many 4-H youth from<br />

around Southeastern <strong>Colorado</strong> who volunteered.<br />

Crowley County Benefit Auction<br />

In an effort to assist the victims of the Crowley County fire, Greg Storey has<br />

graciously volunteered to conduct a benefit auction at 10:00 a.m., on <strong>May</strong> 31,<br />

2008, at the Otero County Courthouse parking lot. All proceeds from the<br />

auction will go to victims of the fire. Greg is looking for donations of new<br />

items to be auctioned off. If you would like to help out, please contact Greg at<br />

Memorial Day Horse Clinic<br />

and Show<br />

<strong>May</strong> 24, 25, 26, 2008<br />

LCC College Arenas<br />

The Prowers County 4-H Horse<br />

Committee will be sponsoring the<br />

clinic again this year!<br />

We will be having 3 days of<br />

instruction: Horsemanship events<br />

on Saturday and Sunday;<br />

Gymkhana events on Monday.<br />

The Committee requests that<br />

participants be involved in at least<br />

one day of Horsemanship to be<br />

involved in the day of Gymkhana.<br />

Cost is $25 for any two days or<br />

$30 for all three days.<br />

Indoor stalls will not be available,<br />

but outdoor pens will on a first<br />

come first serve basis. Cost is $15,<br />

with a $5 refund if they are<br />

cleaned at checkout.<br />

Concessions will be available.<br />

Clinic is open to any 4-H member.<br />

The Kiowa County Fun Festival<br />

counties to participate in the Fun<br />

Fashion Revue Workshops<br />

All Fashion Revue Contestants are<br />

invited to these fun workshops<br />

hosted by the Cosmetology<br />

Departments at OJC and LCC. At<br />

both locations, the workshops will<br />

cover good grooming, make-up<br />

and skin care, accessories, and<br />

modeling. Each participant will<br />

receive a mini-manicure. Each<br />

location is limited to 15<br />

participants, so call your local<br />

office soon to reserve your spot.<br />

Participants should bring $2 for the<br />

cosmetology students for their<br />

supplies. Both workshops will be<br />

structured the same; choose the<br />

date and place that works best for<br />

Creative Cooks, Cake<br />

Decorating and<br />

Demonstration Contests<br />

All counties are invited to joint<br />

contests this year on June 16 at 6<br />

p.m. at the <strong>Extension</strong> Office in Las<br />

Animas. You must be enrolled in<br />

Cake Decorating to enter that<br />

contest, but the Creative Cooks<br />

and Demonstration Contests are<br />

open to all 4-H members. Each<br />

county will be judged separately,<br />

and contestants will also compete<br />

for district awards. County winners<br />

are eligible to compete in the state<br />

contests held during <strong>State</strong> Fair.<br />

All these contests teach public<br />

speaking, organization and project<br />

skills. Contest rules are on-line at<br />

www.colorado4h.org under state<br />

fair requirements, or contact your<br />

local <strong>Extension</strong> Office. Enter by<br />

calling your local <strong>Extension</strong> Office<br />

by June 9.<br />

<strong>State</strong> Conference is an opportunity<br />

for fun and adventure on the<br />

<strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> campus!<br />

The 2008 <strong>State</strong> 4-H Conference<br />

will be held June 23-27.<br />

30. <strong>State</strong> Conference provides<br />

great training and an opportunity<br />

for 4-H members, leaders and<br />

<strong>Extension</strong> Agents to strengthen<br />

their leadership skills. It also hosts<br />

the following state contests:<br />

Livestock Judging, Consumer<br />

Choices, Horse Bowl, Horse<br />

Judging, Hippology, Horse<br />

Demonstrations, Public Speaking,<br />

Prepared Speech and<br />

Extemporaneous Speech.<br />

Also held during <strong>State</strong> Conference<br />

are the Senate meetings, where the<br />

County representatives vote on<br />

<strong>State</strong> officers and other relevant<br />

issues.<br />

<strong>State</strong> Conference is for 4-H’ers 14<br />

years or older as of December 31,<br />

Going Green with 4-H and<br />

Ford<br />

The Rocky Mountain Ford Stores<br />

have donated a 2008 Ford XLT<br />

F150 4x4 pickup truck to the<br />

<strong>Colorado</strong> 4-H Foundation to help<br />

raise funds for 4-H. The truck runs<br />

either on gasoline, or on E-85<br />

Ethanol fuel, a cleaner burning<br />

fuel alternative to gasoline.<br />

Raffle tickets will be sold for the<br />

next six months by Foundation<br />

Board members, <strong>Extension</strong> staff<br />

and 4-H members and leaders. The<br />

drawing will be held at the Metro<br />

Area Support 4-H (M*A*S*H)<br />

Gala being held October 11, 2008<br />

at the Wings over the Rockies Air<br />

and Space museum in Denver.<br />

Tickets are $20 each. Five dollars<br />

from each ticket will be returned to<br />

the county program. The<br />

remaining funds will be used to<br />

fund special 4-H youth programs<br />

through a RFP (Request for Funds)<br />

process through the <strong>State</strong> 4-H<br />

office.<br />

“Our goal is to have the truck on<br />

display at as many county 4-H<br />

events as possible between now<br />

and October,” said Gary Small,<br />

Executive Director of the <strong>Colorado</strong><br />

4-H Foundation. “The funds raised<br />

from the raffle will help us provide<br />

the 4-H learning experience to<br />

many more kids in <strong>Colorado</strong>. We<br />

greatly appreciate Ford becoming<br />

an official sponsor of the <strong>Colorado</strong><br />

4-H Program”.<br />

Camp Round-UP<br />

CSU’s Department of Animal<br />

Science will offer “Camp Round-<br />

UP” June 15-19. Camp Round-UP<br />

is an opportunity for youth ages<br />

13-18 to join in a fun and<br />

enriching learning environment<br />

High Plains Range Camp<br />

High Plains Range Camp<br />

(formerly Black Mesa Range<br />

Ecological Academy) will be held<br />

June 16-20, 2008, at the Camp<br />

Billy Joe facility near Kenton,<br />

Oklahoma. The week-long<br />

experience will cover:<br />

• Basic ecological principles<br />

• Plant identification<br />

• Leadership skills<br />

• Speaking skills<br />

• Teambuilding skills<br />

• How to evaluate habitat for<br />

wildlife and livestock<br />

• How to develop a land<br />

management plan<br />

• How to incorporate technology<br />

such as Global Positioning<br />

Satellites (GPS) & Geographic<br />

Information Systems (GIS) into<br />

land management<br />

• Have fun<br />

The Academy is for high school<br />

sophomores, juniors and seniors<br />

from <strong>Colorado</strong>, Kansas, New<br />

Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. All<br />

teaching is done in a participatory<br />

learning environment – just a little<br />

talking, quite a bit of doing.<br />

Funds are available to assist<br />

participants with the cost of tuition<br />

Shooting Sports<br />

Family Camp Out<br />

The annual Shooting Sports<br />

Family Camp Out will be held<br />

June 13-15, 2008, near Victor,<br />

<strong>Colorado</strong>. Participants are<br />

responsible for their own tents,<br />

trailers, food and drinking water.<br />

Registration fee is $12.00 per<br />

person, with a maximum charge of<br />

$35 per family, for immediate<br />

family only.<br />

This is an opportunity for families<br />

to meet each other and have a good<br />

time. The fun begins Saturday<br />

with youth/parent/leader teams,<br />

selected at random. Shooting<br />

events will be educational but<br />

FUN-oriented!<br />

Wild Bug Fish Camp<br />

Sport Fishing, Wildlife and<br />

Entomology members, parents and<br />

leaders should make plans now to<br />

attend the Wild Bug Fish Camp to<br />

be held June 9-12. The camp will<br />

be located close to the Rocky<br />

Mountain National Park near<br />

Granby, CO. There will be<br />

educational programs on wildlife,<br />

wildlife habitat, fishing, tackle<br />

crafting, aquatic environment and<br />

entomology. The camp will<br />

provide plenty of fishing, fly tying,<br />

wildlife viewing, insect catching<br />

and learning a little camping and a<br />

lot of fun thrown in.<br />

Don’t miss this chance to fish,<br />

view and learn about wildlife, add<br />

to your insect collection and have<br />

fun with other 4-H members.<br />

Interested members and leaders do<br />

not have to be enrolled in the<br />

projects to attend.<br />

The cost is $75.00 for 4-H<br />

members and $60.00 for<br />

Camp Rocky<br />

Camp Rocky is a week long,<br />

residential camp for 14 through 19<br />

year olds who enjoy the outdoors<br />

and are interested in natural<br />

resources. Camp Rocky staff help<br />

participants learn about their<br />

environment, while working in<br />

teams and meeting other students<br />

from across <strong>Colorado</strong>. Students<br />

choose one of the following<br />

resource fields for their area of<br />

focus: Forest Management,<br />

Rangeland Science, Soil and Water<br />

Conservation, Fish and Wildlife<br />

Management.<br />

Camp Rocky will be held July 6-<br />

12, 2008, at Divide, <strong>Colorado</strong>. If<br />

interested, youth will need to<br />

submit an “interest form”, they<br />

will then be sent the application<br />

and health forms, and all forms<br />

must be returned by July 1 st . Cost<br />

for the camp is $250.00; however,<br />

full or partial scholarships are<br />

available to help cover the costs.<br />

Livestock Industry Camp<br />

All 4-H & FFA members enrolled<br />

in beef, sheep, swine, goats, or<br />

horse are invited to attend the first<br />

annual Northeast <strong>Colorado</strong><br />

Livestock Industry Camp, to be<br />

held June 17-18, 2008. During the<br />

two day camp you will receive one<br />

on one, hands on training with live<br />

animals in each species. You will<br />

be introduced to proven techniques<br />

within the livestock industry and<br />

receive tips on show day<br />

preparation, showmanship, feeding<br />

and daily care. You will also<br />

receive instruction on such topics<br />

as carcass development and<br />

evaluation, meat production and<br />

cuts, and record keeping. Cost is<br />

$75.00 per member and that price<br />

includes camp material, t-shirt,<br />

overnight stay at NJC dorms, and<br />

The Otero County 4-H Foundation<br />

is here to help any Otero County 4-<br />

H’er. 4-H members are<br />

encouraged to submit a request for<br />

financial assistance to the<br />

Foundation. The request can be<br />

interest-free loans to help purchase<br />

livestock, feed, shelter, or<br />

equipment, or grants to pay<br />

portions of trips, workshops, or<br />

clinics. All you have to do is write<br />

a letter including the following<br />

information:<br />

request is being made.<br />

Description of the dollar<br />

amount needed and how<br />

the funds will be used.<br />

Party<br />

The 4-H Foundation Pool Party<br />

will be July 7, 2008, at 6:30<br />

p.m. at the La Junta “Wipe-<br />

Out” Pool. All members that<br />

received grants or loans from<br />

the Foundation will need to give<br />

a short presentation either at the<br />

swim party or at the annual<br />

meeting in October.<br />

Meat, drinks and table service<br />

will be provided. Each family<br />

is asked to bring a salad or<br />

dessert. Please let the<br />

<strong>Extension</strong> Office now how<br />

many people are coming from<br />

each club no later than July 3rd.<br />

4-H Council Needs Ideas<br />

The 4-H Council is not doing<br />

the Kid’s Rodeo concessions<br />

this year, had a reduced income<br />

from the kitchen last year, and<br />

anticipates a reduced income<br />

this year as well. Therefore,<br />

Council needs to bring in some<br />

money to help members and<br />

leaders take advantage of<br />

leadership opportunities,<br />

sponsor scrapbooks, club booth<br />

displays and window display<br />

contests, and help pay for the<br />

Achievement Banquet. If you<br />

have an idea for a fund raiser,<br />

please contact the <strong>Extension</strong><br />

Office or bring it to the June<br />

Council meeting.<br />

Meeting Dates<br />

There is only one remaining<br />

Shooting Sports Safety meeting:<br />

It will be held June 5, 2008, at<br />

6:30 p.m. at the <strong>Extension</strong><br />

Office.<br />

As a reminder, you must attend<br />

two safety meetings to be<br />

eligible to take part in the<br />

County Shoot.<br />

Mark Your Calendar! The<br />

Otero County Shoot to qualify<br />

for <strong>State</strong> Fair will be held July<br />

12, 2008. Alternate date, in<br />

case of inclement weather, is<br />

July 26, 2008. There will be a<br />

pot luck dinner and award<br />

ceremony following the<br />

competition.<br />

Shooting Sports Practice<br />

Dates<br />

Several dates have been<br />

scheduled for Shooting Sports<br />

members to practice. Certified<br />

Shooting Sports leaders will be<br />

available for each practice. In<br />

addition, a parent or legal<br />

guardian must be present with<br />

the youth. Failure to do so will<br />

result in the youth not being<br />

allowed to participate at that<br />

practice.<br />

For practices at the La Junta<br />

Gun Club, there will be a range


fee of $1.00 per person per day,<br />

and for shotgun, there is a $3.00<br />

per round fee for clay targets.<br />

All practice sessions will begin<br />

at 6:00 p.m. If you would like<br />

to practice, there will be<br />

certified leaders at the La Junta<br />

Gun Club on the following<br />

Market Goat, Sheep and<br />

Swine Tag Dates for 2008<br />

There are two dates scheduled<br />

to tag and weigh market goats,<br />

sheep and swine. The first date<br />

is Wednesday, <strong>May</strong> 14, 2008,<br />

from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the<br />

Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds.<br />

The second date is Thursday,<br />

<strong>May</strong> 15, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.<br />

at the Fairgrounds in Ordway.<br />

Otero and Crowley County 4-<br />

H’ers may have their animals<br />

tagged and weighed at either of<br />

the locations. If you cannot<br />

personally take your animals,<br />

please make arrangements for<br />

someone else to take them for<br />

you.<br />

Please note, if you want to<br />

participate in the ultra sound<br />

procedure at the AV Fair, you<br />

must commit and pay during<br />

weigh-in.<br />

Ultra Sound at the<br />

County Fair<br />

The <strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Meat Science Team will be<br />

ultra sounding pigs, sheep and<br />

goats at the county fair to<br />

obtain carcass information. This<br />

will take place Friday, August<br />

15 at 1:00 p.m. Technology is<br />

rather amazing, as many of you<br />

know, and we have the<br />

opportunity to utilize some of<br />

the new and advanced<br />

equipment to gather accurate<br />

carcass information. The<br />

equipment will be measuring<br />

backfat and ribeye/loin areas<br />

which incorporates the amount<br />

of fat and muscling the animals<br />

are carrying. 4-H & FFA<br />

members and families will have<br />

the chance to watch a screen<br />

while the animal is being ultra<br />

sounded that will show all the<br />

data being gathered at that time.<br />

This procedure will be<br />

completed on a VOLUNTARY<br />

BASIS and will be $10.00 per<br />

animal. Therefore, this<br />

procedure is NOT REQUIRED<br />

and 4-H & FFA members have<br />

the option of participating.<br />

Those members that wish to<br />

take part in the data collection<br />

process with their animal will in<br />

turn be put into a contest to<br />

determine rankings of the data.<br />

At least $3.00 and up to $5.00<br />

will be jackpotted out and given<br />

at the Achievement Banquet in<br />

October. In order to participate,<br />

you must commit and pay the<br />

$10.00 per animal at weigh-in<br />

on <strong>May</strong> 14 and 15 th .<br />

Team will be offering a<br />

presentation following the<br />

collection of data and prior to<br />

the sale that evening. If you<br />

Scrapies Premise I.D.<br />

Requirements<br />

For those members planning on<br />

showing sheep or goats at the<br />

Arkansas Valley Fair, please<br />

note: All breeding sheep and all<br />

market ewe lambs will be<br />

required to have Scrapies ID<br />

tags. All does in the market<br />

class and all breeding goats will<br />

be required to have Scrapies ID<br />

tags. Any registered breeding<br />

goat with a legible premise<br />

tattoo will suffice as a Scrapies<br />

ID tag; however, Scrapies ID<br />

tags are preferred. Scrapies ID<br />

tags can be obtained by calling<br />

the U.S. Department of<br />

Agriculture’s APHIS (Animal<br />

and Plant Health Inspection<br />

Services) at 303-239-4168, or<br />

the toll free number at 8-866-<br />

USDA-TAG (873-2824). The<br />

tags are provided at no cost.<br />

We would recommend you call<br />

before the end of <strong>May</strong>, as it<br />

might take a month or so to get<br />

the tags.


Gymkhanas<br />

The next<br />

gymkhana will<br />

be held <strong>May</strong> 19 in<br />

Crowley County at 6:30 p.m.<br />

Remember, helmets are<br />

required for all participants<br />

doing barrels, poles, or flags.<br />

You do not have to be enrolled<br />

in the 4-H horse project in order<br />

to participate, but you must be<br />

currently enrolled in 4-H. Also,<br />

participants must pay the $2.00<br />

horse insurance fee. For more<br />

Ford Truck Raffle<br />

As stated in the area section of<br />

this newsletter, the <strong>Colorado</strong> 4-<br />

H Foundation is raffling off a<br />

2008 Ford XLT F150 4x4<br />

pickup. Each county is asked to<br />

help sell raffle tickets. Tickets<br />

will be sold from the first of<br />

<strong>May</strong> to the first of September.<br />

All ticket stubs and money must<br />

be turned back into the<br />

<strong>Extension</strong> Office by September<br />

2, 2008. Tickets are $20.00<br />

each, with $5.00 staying in the<br />

County. Each club is asked to<br />

sell one booklet of 10 tickets. If<br />

you want to sell more or can<br />

sell more, let the <strong>Extension</strong><br />

Office know and we would be<br />

happy to get your club<br />

additional tickets. The truck<br />

will be in the Arkansas Valley<br />

Fair parade and at the<br />

fairgrounds on Friday of the<br />

Fair.<br />

Stacy Storey Memorial<br />

Award<br />

If you are a junior or<br />

intermediate member and plan<br />

to show either horses, sheep,<br />

rabbits, dog, poultry or<br />

ceramics, you are encouraged to<br />

apply for the prestigious Stacy<br />

Storey Memorial Award.<br />

The Storeys would like to visit<br />

personally with each applicant.<br />

The judging for this award will<br />

take into consideration the<br />

following areas:<br />

Club participation<br />

County activities and<br />

participation<br />

Record books<br />

Showmanship (where<br />

applicable)<br />

Care of animals and<br />

facilities<br />

To apply, members must<br />

write a letter stating 4-H<br />

All cake decorating members<br />

Linda Senor has graciously<br />

offered to conduct the workshop<br />

and will be covering all units.<br />

Members need to bring all tools,<br />

supply of icing, form or baked<br />
