Holly Begins Reforestation at Gateway Park
By: The Colorado State Forest Service
On April 6th, the Town of Holly began its effort to replant
trees at Gateway Park. Over 30 volunteers helped with the
replanting effort, which involved the planting of six large trees; three bur oak
and three honeylocust trees. Three additional American elm hybrids, that are
Dutch elm disease resistant, will be planted this spring as well. Mayor Bruce
Roup officially proclaimed April 6th, 2008 as Arbor Day in the Town of Holly
with the reading of the Arbor Day Proclamation. A great deal of appreciation
goes to all of the people who helped with this project. Over 25 4-H youth and
4-H leaders from across Southeastern Colorado contributed a helping hand, as
well as Southeastern Colorado CSU Extension agents from Crowley, Otero,
Baca, Bent, Kiowa, and Prowers Counties. Colorado State Forest Service
foresters also assisted, providing the tree planting leadership for volunteers.

Crowley County Benefit Auction
In an effort to assist the victims of the Crowley County fire, Greg Storey has
graciously volunteered to conduct a benefit auction at 10:00 a.m., on May 31,
2008, at the Otero County Courthouse parking lot. All proceeds from the
auction will go to victims of the fire. Greg is looking for donations of new
items to be auctioned off. If you would like to help out, please contact Greg at

Memorial Day Horse Clinic
and Show

LCC College Arenas
The Prowers County 4-H Horse
Committee will be sponsoring the
clinic again this year!
We will be having 3 days of
instruction: Horsemanship events
on Saturday and Sunday;
Gymkhana events on Monday.
The Committee requests that
participants be involved in at least
one day of Horsemanship to be
involved in the day of Gymkhana.
Cost is $25 for any two days or
$30 for all three days.
Indoor stalls will not be available,
but outdoor pens will on a first
come first serve basis. Cost is $15,
with a $5 refund if they are
cleaned at checkout.
Concessions will be available.
Clinic is open to any 4-H member.

Wed., May 7th, 2008. All

Fun Festival
The Kiowa County Fun Festival
has been scheduled for Friday,
May 30, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at the
Eads Community Building. Kiowa
County has graciously invited all
members from the Southeast Area
counties to participate in the Fun
Festival. Entry forms will be due
in the Kiowa County Extension

Fashion Revue Workshops
All Fashion Revue Contestants are
invited to these fun workshops
hosted by the Cosmetology
Departments at OJC and LCC. At
both locations, the workshops will
cover good grooming, make-up
and skin care, accessories, and
modeling. Each participant will
receive a mini-manicure. Each
location is limited to 15
participants, so call your local
office soon to reserve your spot.
Participants should bring $2 for the
cosmetology students for their
supplies. Both workshops will be
structured the same; choose the
date and place that works best for
you.

Creative Cooks, Cake
Decorating and
Demonstration Contests
All counties are invited to joint
contests this year on June 16 at 6
p.m. at the Extension Office in Las
Animas. You must be enrolled in
Cake Decorating to enter that
contest, but the Creative Cooks
and Demonstration Contests are
open to all 4-H members. Each
county will be judged separately,
and contestants will also compete
for district awards. County winners
are eligible to compete in the state
contests held during State Fair.
All these contests teach public
speaking, organization and project
skills. Contest rules are on-line at
www.colorado4h.org under state
fair requirements, or contact your
local Extension Office. Enter by

by June 9.
State Conference is an opportunity
for fun and adventure on the
Colorado State University campus!
The 2008 State 4-H Conference
will be held June 23-27.
Registration forms are due at your
County Extension Office by May
30. State Conference provides
great training and an opportunity
for 4-H members, leaders and
Extension Agents to strengthen
their leadership skills. It also hosts
the following state contests:
Livestock Judging, Consumer
Choices, Horse Bowl, Horse
Judging, Hippology, Horse
Demonstrations, Public Speaking,
Prepared Speech and
Extemporaneous Speech.
Also held during State Conference
are the Senate meetings, where the
County representatives vote on
State officers and other relevant
issues.
State Conference is for 4-H’ers 14
years or older as of December 31,

Going Green with 4-H and
Ford
The Rocky Mountain Ford Stores
have donated a 2008 Ford XLT
F150 4x4 pickup truck to the
Colorado 4-H Foundation to help
raise funds for 4-H. The truck runs
either on gasoline, or on E-85
Ethanol fuel, a cleaner burning
fuel alternative to gasoline.
Raffle tickets will be sold for the
next six months by Foundation
Board members, Extension staff
and 4-H members and leaders. The
drawing will be held at the Metro
Area Support 4-H (M*A*S*H)
Gala being held October 11, 2008
at the Wings over the Rockies Air
and Space museum in Denver.
Tickets are $20 each. Five dollars
from each ticket will be returned to
the county program. The
remaining funds will be used to
fund special 4-H youth programs
through a RFP (Request for Funds)
process through the State 4-H
office.
“Our goal is to have the truck on
display at as many county 4-H
events as possible between now
and October,” said Gary Small,
Executive Director of the Colorado
4-H Foundation. “The funds raised
from the raffle will help us provide
the 4-H learning experience to
many more kids in Colorado. We
greatly appreciate Ford becoming
an official sponsor of the Colorado
4-H Program”.

High Plains Range Camp
High Plains Range Camp
(formerly Black Mesa Range
Ecological Academy) will be held
June 16-20, 2008, at the Camp
Billy Joe facility near Kenton,
Oklahoma. The week-long
experience will cover:
• Basic ecological principles
• Plant identification
• Leadership skills
• Speaking skills
• Teambuilding skills
• How to evaluate habitat for
wildlife and livestock
• How to develop a land
management plan
• How to incorporate technology
such as Global Positioning
Satellites (GPS) & Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) into
land management
• Have fun
The Academy is for high school
sophomores, juniors and seniors
from Colorado, Kansas, New
Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. All
teaching is done in a participatory
learning environment – just a little
talking, quite a bit of doing.
Funds are available to assist
participants with the cost of tuition
to the Academy. To inquire about
the availability of scholarships
please contact your local
Conservation District or County
Extension Office. All applications
must be received by June 2, 2008.

Shooting Sports
Family Camp Out
The annual Shooting Sports
Family Camp Out will be held
June 13-15, 2008, near Victor,
Colorado. Participants are
responsible for their own tents,
trailers, food and drinking water.
Registration fee is $12.00 per
person, with a maximum charge of
$35 per family, for immediate
family only.
This is an opportunity for families
to meet each other and have a good
time. The fun begins Saturday
with youth/parent/leader teams,
selected at random. Shooting
events will be educational but
FUN-oriented!

Wild Bug Fish Camp
Sport Fishing, Wildlife and
Entomology members, parents and
leaders should make plans now to
attend the Wild Bug Fish Camp to
be held June 9-12. The camp will
be located close to the Rocky
Mountain National Park near
Granby, CO. There will be
educational programs on wildlife,
wildlife habitat, fishing, tackle
crafting, aquatic environment and
entomology. The camp will
provide plenty of fishing, fly tying,
wildlife viewing, insect catching
and learning a little camping and a
lot of fun thrown in.
Don’t miss this chance to fish,
view and learn about wildlife, add
to your insect collection and have
fun with other 4-H members.
Interested members and leaders do
not have to be enrolled in the
projects to attend.
The cost is $75.00 for 4-H
members and $60.00 for

Camp Rocky
Camp Rocky is a week long,
residential camp for 14 through 19
year olds who enjoy the outdoors
and are interested in natural
resources. Camp Rocky staff help
participants learn about their
environment, while working in
teams and meeting other students
from across Colorado. Students
choose one of the following
resource fields for their area of
focus: Forest Management,
Rangeland Science, Soil and Water
Conservation, Fish and Wildlife
Management.
Camp Rocky will be held July 6-
12, 2008, at Divide, Colorado. If
interested, youth will need to
submit an “interest form”, they
will then be sent the application
and health forms, and all forms
must be returned by July 1 st . Cost
for the camp is $250.00; however,
full or partial scholarships are
available to help cover the costs.

Livestock Industry Camp
All 4-H & FFA members enrolled
in beef, sheep, swine, goats, or
horse are invited to attend the first
annual Northeast Colorado
Livestock Industry Camp, to be
held June 17-18, 2008. During the
two day camp you will receive one
on one, hands on training with live
animals in each species. You will
be introduced to proven techniques
within the livestock industry and
receive tips on show day
preparation, showmanship, feeding
and daily care. You will also
receive instruction on such topics
as carcass development and
evaluation, meat production and
cuts, and record keeping. Cost is
$75.00 per member and that price
includes camp material, t-shirt,
overnight stay at NJC dorms, and

4-H Foundation Request
Information
The Otero County 4-H Foundation
is here to help any Otero County 4-
H’er. 4-H members are
encouraged to submit a request for
financial assistance to the
Foundation. The request can be
interest-free loans to help purchase
livestock, feed, shelter, or
equipment, or grants to pay
portions of trips, workshops, or
clinics. All you have to do is write
a letter including the following
information:
Description of the
project, activity or
experience for which the
request is being made.
Description of the dollar
amount needed and how
the funds will be used.
Description of the
educational value of the
project, activity or
experience.
Describe the benefit of
this project, activity or
experience for you and
others.
List potential alternative
sources of funds for this
need.
Don’t forget to include
your name, address, and
telephone number.
The Foundation Board has
extended the deadline for requests.
Your request letter should be
received by June 1, 2008, at the
Otero County Extension Office,

June meeting. Applicants will get

4-H Foundation Pool
Party
The 4-H Foundation Pool Party
will be July 7, 2008, at 6:30
p.m. at the La Junta “Wipe-
Out” Pool. All members that
received grants or loans from
the Foundation will need to give
a short presentation either at the
swim party or at the annual
meeting in October.
Meat, drinks and table service
will be provided. Each family
is asked to bring a salad or
dessert. Please let the
Extension Office now how
many people are coming from
each club no later than July 3rd.
4-H Council Needs Ideas
The 4-H Council is not doing
the Kid’s Rodeo concessions
this year, had a reduced income
from the kitchen last year, and
anticipates a reduced income
this year as well. Therefore,
Council needs to bring in some
money to help members and
leaders take advantage of
leadership opportunities,
sponsor scrapbooks, club booth
displays and window display
contests, and help pay for the
Achievement Banquet. If you
have an idea for a fund raiser,
please contact the Extension
Office or bring it to the June
Council meeting.

Meeting Dates

Shooting Sports Safety meeting:
It will be held June 5, 2008, at
6:30 p.m. at the Extension
Office.
As a reminder, you must attend
two safety meetings to be
eligible to take part in the
County Shoot.

Mark Your Calendar! The
Otero County Shoot to qualify
for State Fair will be held July
12, 2008. Alternate date, in
case of inclement weather, is
July 26, 2008. There will be a
pot luck dinner and award
ceremony following the
competition.
Shooting Sports Practice
Dates
Several dates have been
scheduled for Shooting Sports
members to practice. Certified
Shooting Sports leaders will be
available for each practice. In
addition, a parent or legal
guardian must be present with
the youth. Failure to do so will
result in the youth not being
allowed to participate at that
practice.
For practices at the La Junta
Gun Club, there will be a range

fee of $1.00 per person per day,
and for shotgun, there is a $3.00
per round fee for clay targets.
All practice sessions will begin
at 6:00 p.m. If you would like
to practice, there will be
certified leaders at the La Junta
Gun Club on the following

Market Goat, Sheep and
Swine Tag Dates for 2008
There are two dates scheduled
to tag and weigh market goats,
sheep and swine. The first date
is Wednesday, May 14, 2008,
from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the
Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds.
The second date is Thursday,
May 15, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
at the Fairgrounds in Ordway.
Otero and Crowley County 4-
H’ers may have their animals
tagged and weighed at either of
the locations. If you cannot
personally take your animals,
please make arrangements for
someone else to take them for
you.
Please note, if you want to
participate in the ultra sound
procedure at the AV Fair, you
must commit and pay during
weigh-in.
Ultra Sound at the
County Fair
The Colorado State University
Meat Science Team will be
ultra sounding pigs, sheep and
goats at the county fair to
obtain carcass information. This
will take place Friday, August
15 at 1:00 p.m. Technology is
rather amazing, as many of you
know, and we have the
opportunity to utilize some of
the new and advanced
equipment to gather accurate
carcass information. The
equipment will be measuring
backfat and ribeye/loin areas
which incorporates the amount
of fat and muscling the animals
are carrying. 4-H & FFA
members and families will have
the chance to watch a screen
while the animal is being ultra
sounded that will show all the
data being gathered at that time.
This procedure will be
completed on a VOLUNTARY
BASIS and will be $10.00 per
animal. Therefore, this
procedure is NOT REQUIRED
and 4-H & FFA members have
the option of participating.
Those members that wish to
take part in the data collection
process with their animal will in
turn be put into a contest to
determine rankings of the data.
At least $3.00 and up to $5.00
will be jackpotted out and given
at the Achievement Banquet in
October. In order to participate,
you must commit and pay the
$10.00 per animal at weigh-in
on May 14 and 15 th .
Members of the Meat Science
Team will be offering a
presentation following the
collection of data and prior to
the sale that evening. If you

Scrapies Premise I.D.
Requirements
For those members planning on
showing sheep or goats at the
Arkansas Valley Fair, please
note: All breeding sheep and all
market ewe lambs will be
required to have Scrapies ID
tags. All does in the market
class and all breeding goats will
be required to have Scrapies ID
tags. Any registered breeding
goat with a legible premise
tattoo will suffice as a Scrapies
ID tag; however, Scrapies ID
tags are preferred. Scrapies ID
tags can be obtained by calling
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s APHIS (Animal
and Plant Health Inspection
Services) at 303-239-4168, or
the toll free number at 8-866-
USDA-TAG (873-2824). The
tags are provided at no cost.
We would recommend you call
before the end of May, as it
might take a month or so to get
the tags.

Gymkhanas
The next
gymkhana will
be held May 19 in
Crowley County at 6:30 p.m.
Remember, helmets are
required for all participants
doing barrels, poles, or flags.
You do not have to be enrolled
in the 4-H horse project in order
to participate, but you must be
currently enrolled in 4-H. Also,
participants must pay the $2.00
horse insurance fee. For more

Ford Truck Raffle
As stated in the area section of
this newsletter, the Colorado 4-
H Foundation is raffling off a

help sell raffle tickets. Tickets
will be sold from the first of
May to the first of September.
All ticket stubs and money must
be turned back into the
Extension Office by September
2, 2008. Tickets are $20.00
each, with $5.00 staying in the
County. Each club is asked to
sell one booklet of 10 tickets. If
you want to sell more or can
sell more, let the Extension
Office know and we would be
happy to get your club
additional tickets. The truck
will be in the Arkansas Valley
Fair parade and at the
fairgrounds on Friday of the
Fair.
Stacy Storey Memorial
Award
If you are a junior or
intermediate member and plan
to show either horses, sheep,
rabbits, dog, poultry or
ceramics, you are encouraged to
apply for the prestigious Stacy
Storey Memorial Award.
The Storeys would like to visit
personally with each applicant.
The judging for this award will
take into consideration the
following areas:
Club participation
County activities and
participation
Record books
Showmanship (where
applicable)
Care of animals and
facilities
To apply, members must
write a letter stating 4-H
activities, offices held,
school activities, and what
4-H means to you and
submit the information to
the Extension Office by
June 1 st .
Junior and intermediate
members are those who are 13
or younger as of December 31,
2007.
The award is presented at the
Achievement Banquet.
Arkansas Valley Fair
Entries
Due date for entries for the
Arkansas Valley Fair is June
27 th . Entry forms and premium
books will be available from
you club leader in mid May.
Fair dates are August 13-17,
2008.
Crowley County Days
Crowley County Days will be
held July 19-26, 2008. Due
date for entries is June 20.
Entry forms and premium books
are available at the Crowley and
Otero County Extension offices.
Cake Decorating
Workshop
All cake decorating members
are encouraged to attend a
workshop on Wednesday, June
4, from 2:00 -6:00 p.m., at the
Otero County Extension Office.
Linda Senor has graciously
offered to conduct the workshop
and will be covering all units.
Members need to bring all tools,
supply of icing, form or baked
cake on a board, and pan.
Parents are strongly encouraged
to come and stay with the
members.

Early release of any project or
entry can only be obtained for
health, 4-H or college related
reasons by written permission
of the Arkansas Valley Junior
Show Committee. Removing
livestock from fairgrounds
before release is considered an
unethical practice, with the
exception of breeding stock
which will be at the discretion
of the Superintendent involved.
If because of “health or a 4-H
related conflict”, an exhibitor is
unable to show or sell his/her
animal, another bonafide 4-H or
FFA member can substitute
with permission of the Arkansas
Valley Junior Show
Committee. College bound
students will be evaluated on a
case by case basis. All letters
must be received in the
Extension Office by 4:00 p.m.
on August 8, 2008.
