letter from farestart leadership 

Dear Friends, 

Looking back at 2007, it’s clear that it will go down in the books as one of the most exciting 

years in FareStart’s history. In January of 2007 we moved into our beautiful new home at 7th & 

Virginia — 33,000 square feet of kitchens, classrooms, work space, and a restaurant that serves to 

connect the community with the issue of homelessness. 

When campaigning for support to purchase and renovate this new facility, we made a promise to the 

community that we would use this expanded space to double the number of individuals we serve over 

the course of the following five years. Upon moving to 7th & Virginia, we adopted the motto “Meeting 

the Promise” — and we’re well on our way to our goal of graduating 150 individuals in the year 2010 

(one year ahead of schedule). 

The best way to describe 2007 is truly as a year of growth — we increased the number of individuals 

served, our restaurant nearly tripled its business revenue, we grew the number of childcare centers we 

serve each day, we increased our fundraising revenue due to generous community support, and we 

placed more graduates in jobs than ever before. We also used the new building as a spring-board for 

improving the training we offer our students — both our classroom curriculum and the hands-on training 

in our two kitchens. 

What we want to impress upon each of you as you read this report is the hand you have had in making 

this growth a reality. By eating in our restaurant, hiring a graduate, making a financial donation, using 

FareStart Catering, or spreading the word about FareStart, each of you has made an impact in the 

lives of our students. Thank you — we couldn’t provide our students the opportunity to transform their 

lives without your support.

Since 1992, FareStart has provided job training and life skills 

training to thousands of homeless and disadvantaged men and 

women. FareStart’s 16-week adult culinary training program 

combines intensive, hands-on food service work with classroom 

instruction. Students also complete a six-part series of life 

skills classes on a variety of subjects to prepare themselves for 

employment and self-sustainability. 

Early in 2007, FareStart settled into its new, expanded home at 

7th & Virginia. While campaigning for support to build this 33,000 

square foot facility, FareStart made a commitment to the community 

to double the number of individuals served by 2011. 

Already, FareStart is well on its way to exceeding this ambitious 

enrollment goal; we project that in 2010, FareStart will graduate 

more than 150 individuals. Not only is FareStart on track to serve 

and graduate more men and women, but the training experience 

our students receive has also markedly improved. We now have 

fully equipped and spacious kitchens, a faster paced restaurant, 

three classrooms for training, and an expanded team of dedicated 

chef instructors.

youth training program 

On any given night in Seattle, more than 800 youth are homeless. In 

collaboration with YouthCare, FareStart’s Youth Barista Training and 

Education Program aims to meet the complex and unique needs of at-risk 

youth through its hands-on job training program. 

The eight-week program provides students, ages 16–21, job training and 

placement services, life skills classes, employment counseling, classroom 

training, and on-the-job training in the competitive espresso industry. 

While the program’s focus is on job training and placement, the ultimate 

goal and commitment is to re-engage homeless youth in as many ways 

as possible and to provide a stable community for them. Many of the 

program’s graduates re-enroll in school and reconnect with family as a 

result of this unique partnership between FareStart and YouthCare.

guest chef night 

At FareStart, Thursday is the highlight of the week. Each Thursday Night, guest chefs from 

the greater Seattle area volunteer their time and talent to train FareStart students in the 

production of a three-course gourmet dinner, available to the public for only $24.95. 

Guest Chef Night is made possible by volunteers, including the servers and the Guest Chef, 

and most of the ingredients are donated. Proceeds from Guest Chef Night directly support 

FareStart’s job training program. 

We also celebrate our chef supporters each summer at our annual Guest Chef on the 

Waterfront — a carnival-style tasting event at the Bell Harbor Conference Center/Pier 66.

2007 revenue and expenses 

As a social-entrepreneurial organization, FareStart 

generated approximately 40% of its own operating 

revenue in 2007. This was earned through FareStart’s four 

businesses — the FareStart Restaurant, FareStart Catering, 

FareStart Café @ 2100, and FareStart Contract Meals. 

During 2007, 257,650 meals were served to children 

through the 30 childcare centers FareStart serves and 

220,815 meals were provided to homeless men and 

women through the eight shelters to which FareStart delivers 

meals 365 days a year. 

An additional 82,307 meals were served to our business 

customers through FareStart’s restaurant, café, and catering. 

In total, FareStart produced over 560,772 in 2007, up 

to 2,500 meals a day! 

Our businesses have been successful because FareStart 

continues to be the recipient of tremendous support from the 

community. Thank you to all who dine in our restaurant for 

lunch or Guest Chef Night, who use FareStart catering for 

your special events, and who enjoy the coffee and treats 

at our Café.

futures rising capital campaign 

the fareStart Board of directors announced that fareStart’s “futures Rising” capital 

Campaign had reached its $8 million goal in the spring of 2006. This ambitious threeyear 

fundraising effort, made possible by tremendous community support, 

enabled FareStart to purchase and renovate an expanded facility at 

7th & Virginia, into which we moved at the beginning of 2007. 

nearly 1,000 donors contributed to “futures Rising,” including a 

lead foundation grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and 

a lead corporate gift from Charlie’s Produce. Other foundations and 

corporations making leadership gifts were the Kresge Foundation, 

the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the Boeing Company, Starbucks 

Coffee Company and its Partners, Microsoft, the Norcliffe 

Foundation, PACCAR Foundation, the Seattle Foundation, Polygon 

Northwest, SYSCO, and the Washington Wine Commission. In 

addition, 15 incredibly dedicated — and generous! — FareStart board 

members {who collectively contributed more than $500,000 to the 

campaign} provided invaluable leadership and enthusiasm. 

Thank you to everyone who made a gift, introduced a friend, 

attended an event, spread the word, and volunteered their time 

and talent. This was truly a community-wide effort, one that 

was successful only because everyone contributed in a 

meaningful way. 

We hope you continue to visit us in our beautiful, 

efficient, and spacious new home — the fareStart 

Restaurant is open every weekday from 

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursdays 

for Guest Chef Night. We look forward to
