B2 S.G.V. EXAMINER Why Do We Help These People When They Hate Us? Cut Off Money! Unbelievable! Well I shouldn't Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were murdered in the US consulate building in Benghazi, Libya, during an attack on the facility. There was no real protection there when normally there would be as many as fifty Marines assigned to such facilities. I wonder why we dropped the ball here. Libya didn't do much to help out nor help to put out the fires in the burning building. With all the protests going on, we need to look at how and why this festered the way it did and also note the timing. This attack was on 9-11. Many people feel that this is going on because of some video that some idiot recorded. If I heard right, he may not be from this country in the first place. There is no question that this video is in poor taste, but if you look at this video, the words in some areas have been dubbed in, so who knows what was really recorded. George Ogden That’s just the way it is! been out for a few weeks. Then all of a sudden, some Al-Qaeda agitators stirred up the people , (in my opinion,) to mask the planned attacks on our embassies and the Americans. Well, it worked. The trouble is, our government's upper management leaders seem to be side stepping this. Attacking embassies in my opinion is an "Act of War". Then you have President Obama and Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice blowing this off as if it is all because of a movie. You have to be kidding me. The ambassador insisted that "last week's protests in Egypt and Libya were a spontaneous eruption of Islamic rage over a rancid, barely coherent anti- Mohammed video posted on YouTube a few weeks ago. It was an unusually purposeful spontaneity, though." She made these comments on some talk show where she "side-stepped" questions and gave useless answers. She proved herself willfully clueless and morally obtuse in my opinion. She makes me wonder if she was one the jurors from the O.J. Simpson trial. There is no question that these people hate us... not just from one country, but many. They want us dead because of our freedoms and for the fact that we don't believe the way they do. We train these same haters in our country and in theirs. They come to the USA and thrive on our dime and then use it against us. We are seeing this often. We train their military and police and in turn, they turn their guns on our men and women who taught them, killing them. We have dumped billions and billions of dollars into each and every one of these countries. The way it looks to me, they use these funds to kill not only Americans, but anyone else they feel like hating. They hate us so much, but they still come to this country... go figure it out. We need to stop this type of foreign policy by giving them money. The way I look at it, we give them billions of dollars and they use it against us to kill Americans. It’s kind of like rewarding them for bad behavior, you think? "That's Just the Way It Is!" say unbelievable...it was to be expected. United States embassies are under attack world wide. Our U.S. ambassador was killed and raped in Libya. Yes, you heard that right...he was raped. Four killed and many U.S. assistants wounded as they made their escape to a safe house. Was it really safe. When they arrived at the safe house, organized enemy military were already there using RPG's on the safe house and U.S. personnel, firing hundreds of rounds on them as seen on CNN. Our soldiers aren't armed like you think in that country. Many of our soldiers do not have ammo in the chambers of their weapons, as ordered from our top leaders. Just like Vietnam, when soldiers were told not to put rounds in the chambers of their rifles. Many disobeyed these orders and locked and loaded to prepare and defend themselves against an attack. We have an excellent military, but brass at the top just seem to have an F grade when it comes to backing our troops in foreign countries. They handle everything with kid gloves. We need to be the way we use to be back before 30 years ago when we didn't take any guff from anyone. We didn't bow down to people, didn't apologize for things and defended this great nation with dignity under God. We help these people and send over ambassadors as a way of communicating between our countries, only to have him and his colleagues shipped back September 20 - 26, 2012 home in body bags. They smile at us as we ship billions of dollars to them. They shake our hands and thank us for the weapons we give them. Only to shoot at our soldiers that are their to protect them. Our troops have stated that they will do anything to protect our nation (not the presidency). What has our president done? Just apologize and turn the other cheek. We are a very week nation and 911 was just an introduction as to what these people have planned for us. I wish our political leaders would wake up. Decades ago, our country would "NEVER EVER" tolerate this. I wish we were strong like Israel. God help this poor nation! Robert Chavez Baldwin Park Two Day Power Outage in West Covina By George Ogden WEST COVINA - Over 2,000 Edison customers in West Covina and parts of Covina were without power on Saturday and Sunday. Around 4:00 p.m. the substation at Vincent and Puente avenues in West Covina had an explosion and fire. There were no injuries, but this caused a loss of power north of the 10 Freeway alone Vincent into Covina and deep into the area east and west of Vincent. The fire department and Edison responded to deal with the situation. Some power was restored to a little over 25% of the customers on Sunday around 8 a.m. Many were left without power which meant no air conditions and NO Football for those football fans. Mike Jackly who lives in the affected area came to the West Covina VFW on Merced to keep cool, grab a cool one and watch the football games. He wasn't sure what happened when the power went out but he later found out what happened at the substation. He called someone at his home in the late afternoon and found that the power was back on. He finished the game and headed home. Edison set up an area for the community to get ice and water at Palm View Park. Many took advantage and appreciated the assistance that Edison provided. All power was restored by 2 p.m. Sunday.

His record is, in my opinion, the worst in my lifetime, if not all of American History. In short, he has been an absolute disaster. How did this happen? Why didn't we see it coming? With respect to the second question, the answer is obvious - because we didn't want to!! With respect to the first question, the answer is equally obvious - notwithstanding the hoopla over this unaccomplished, articulate black man (or, in the more inspiring words of an L.A. Times Charles H. Bayer grandchildren live in a world where some of the so-called accomplishments have never come to fruition. We don't have safe food and medication. We have a minimum wage but you can't live on it. We have help for the unemployed but you can't support a family with it. Our national parks have lost huge amounts of funding and some have to cut staff back so far they have curbed hours. As far as what you think your grandchildren will take for granted, maybe you better think about your great-grandchildren because I don't think it will happen in Nathan's (a grandchild) lifetime." Her point is that whatever progress has been made is both insufficient and under attack. If the progressive movement took modern shape with FDR and the New Deal, powerful elements in the Republican Party are now intent on gutting all progressive accomplishments. The attempt to end Medicare as we know it is simply one example of the attack. But what of the years just COMMENTARY The San Gabriel Valley Examiner S.G.V. EXAMINER B3 From Hope And Change (2008) To Fear And Smear (2012) Why? To Put A Political Band-Aid On A Policy Cancer Why is Obama - notwithstanding his almost humorous denial - engaging in a campaign of character assassination; you know, the "politics of personal destruction," which the Dems purport to deplore (and in which they regularly engage)?? For the obvious and oft repeated assertion (by me, among others) that he's got nothing else to run on. And, having nothing positive to say about himself, he must set about to make the other guy look worse (which, in his case, with his record, is no easy thing to do). We were warned about this approach over a year ago in a column in Politico by Smith and Martin on 8/9/11 entitled Barack Obama's 2012 plan: 'Kill Romney." They observe: "Barack Obama's aides and advisors are preparing to center the president's re-election campaign on a ferocious personal assault on Mitt Romney's character and business background, a strategy grounded in the early stage expectation that the former Massachusetts governor is the likely GOP nominee." Why? Because, again in the words of Smith and Martin: " * They ain't what they once were. Party nominating conventions used to be exciting. Now they are so tightly scripted that the only time in the two weeks anything happened not teleprompted was the rambling strangeness provided by Clint Eastwood. Having gotten these shows behind us, we can now settle down to become engaged in the more authentic political discourse. This week I will be begin asking what kind of society we hope will be generated in the coming years. The question will be one of national values. A few weeks back I pointed out how the history of the United States has been dominated by a left-center value-oriented ideology which has produced a series of remarkable achievements. As examples of our persistent progress, I listed: A forty-hour workweek. Women's right to vote. The end to racial segregation. A graduated income tax. Laws against child labor. Financial relief for the unemployed. Economic security for the aged. A guarantee that the food we eat and the drugs we take will be safe. A minimum wage for our workers. A system of government owned and operated national parks. Among those who keep me honest is a daughter, who wrote the following: "Here's the problem. Your columnist, "The Magic Negro"), we elected a personable empty suit, i.e. he had accomplished nothing because he had done nothing. You would not hire someone to clean out your septic tank with a record as barren of substance as that of Barack Obama's in 2008. In all fairness, he had a lot of help. First of all, the country was fed up with George W. Bush and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, many conservatives (including me) did not buy into the concept of "Big Government Conservatism." Obama was a charming fellow with the gift of gab, and he was running against 2 very cranky and unpleasant people, Hillary Clinton (an unaccomplished harpie, notwithstanding all the hype surrounding her; if she wasn't married to Bill Clinton, the operative question would have been Hillary who?); and John McCain (whose claim to fame was that he survived torture in North Vietnam, ultimately doing more damage to his country than the North Vietnamese ever did or could). He was the Democrat's and N.Y. After The Political Conventions ahead of us? What can we expect of the current crop of candidates? While we may look for specificity from our politicians, too much specificity can be a danger. Promising what it may be impossible to produce may be like a box canyon-no way out. While none of us can know exactly what the future holds, let alone how to get there, it is the task of leadership to provide a vision and flesh it out with a clear, action-oriented program. Neither nominating convention produced either a vision or a roadmap. Whatever we might look for from the politicians, the kind of nation we want may be our fundamental question. What sort of nation would you like your great-grandchildren inherit? Among readers of the various print and electronic outlets which carry these columns, there are a slew of intelligent, thoughtful visionaries. I hear from a collection of them every week. Here is my question: What is your vision? What would you like to see as the substance of America's future? Write me and I'll attempt to digest your responses and in future columns report on what you have told me. Don't let your imaginations be thwarted by what you see as possibilities. Visionaries are never limited by what the realists say can be. While these responses are coming in, for the next couple of weeks I'll suggest some of what forms my vision. Before he picked the much maligned Sarah Palin for his Vice President, he was flat-lining (she mobilized the base in a manner McCain never could have; indeed, after he chose Palin, he actually pulled ahead of Obama). Then Lehman Bros. went bankrupt, after which McCain (or any Republican, for that matter) didn't stand a chance. And, while it would not have made a difference once Lehman went under, McCain, vainglorious fellow that he is, took character off the table. Thus, although we knew of Jeremiah Wright Bill Ayers, Rashid Khalidi, Jerome Rezko, et al., McCain was too noble to make much of these rather revealing, if somewhat alarming, Obama cronies. And, the name Frank Marshall Davis was never mentioned. Nor did anyone dare ask to see Obama's transcripts; they chose rather to swoon at his engaging manner (thereby elevating form way over substance). In short, the political waters parted, conveniently by Ralph E. Shaffer A contest for a seat on the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District {Upper District} is shaping up as one of November's biggest local election battles. Pitted against incumbent R. William {Bill} Robinson, recognized by constituents as a firm supporter of residential water users' interests, is another long-time officeholder, West Covina councilman and mayor Mike Touhey. The two candidates are a textbook of contrasts. Recently published photos of the two paired a scruffy-looking, bearded Robinson with a well dressed, business-looking Touhey. Robinson takes pride in his minority position on the water board, insisting correctly that he alone is not beholden to the private water interests. Touhey, on the other hand, promises to bring harmony to the board. Robinson defends his frequent disagreements with others on the board as stemming from his fiercely independent attitude. That independence has earned him the wrath of private water interests who have done their best, without success, to defeat him every four years since his election in 1988. His opponent in the last election held an administrative position wit one of the local water companies. A campaign of rumors against Robinson has already started. He's been denounced for temperamental "tirades" against other board members and for walking out of district meetings. The charges, attributed to sources that are never named, are bogus. While Robinson has on rare occasions left meetings, so have other members. There is no evidence that Robinson's departures are any more frequent than those of his board colleagues, and he has always given forewarning that he has another engagement. Those "tirades" are simply a forceful defense of his effort to oppose measures that he believes are not in the interest of his constituents. The descriptive words candidates or their spokesmen chose to characterize an opponent tells us something about them. In an attempt to discredit Robinson, his opponents claim that he was "stripped" of his post as district representative to the Metropolitan Water Board in Los Angeles. Met is the princi- providing passage for this empty suit. Now we do know all about Obama, at least what happens when the rhetoric is over, and he is forced to produce. He is a complete zero; once past the smooth talk, he is nothing but a Chicago hustler. His strategy is that of a radical left-winger; his tactics, those of a Chicago political hack. And, please do not accept my verdict on Obama's political crimes of the past 4 years - judge for yourself. The Jury is no longer out. Virtually every act in which he advanced a policy, fell completely flat, and, rather than solve any of the country's problems, only compounded them. We now have 5 trillion dollars more debt than we did 4 years ago - this after he criticized Bush for running up 4 trillion dollars in 8 years in office; unemployment has been over 8% for over 40 months; Obamacare will not only not work, it will destroy the American healthcare system (which, prior to Obama's tinkering, was the best in the world). Dodd/ Frank will add so much red tape to the business world that it will be very difficult to even engage in business without a staff of attorneys and accountants, which you, the taxpayer, will pay for. On the foreign policy front, the Middle East is lost, imperiling not just Israel, but Europe and the U.S. as well (by laying the ground work for the global caliphate which much of Islam has sought for some time). And much more of an equally disturbing nature. And, if you think I'm being either harsh or biased, please check for yourself. It is frequently observed that this is the most important election in your lifetime - I've said it myself. Never has it been more true. The stakes are enormous, and a vote for Obama is a vote against not just America, but a vote against all of Western Civilization, for if the light of freedom is extinguished in America, darkness will descend on the world; we shall be plunged back into the dark ages under a Muslim Caliphate. So while your pulling the lever for Obama, give serious thought to teaching your kids how to speak Persian. Water Director Robinson: Fiercely Independent Or Odd Man Out? pal water agency in Southern California. Upper District board members chose Robinson to represent the district in 2010. Almost instantly he became involved there in a battle over a sweetheart labor contract that he, and nearly every newspaper in the region, opposed. His vigorous opposition was in part responsible for the renegotiation of the contract later that year. But those disgruntled by his fight against the contract pressured Upper District into replacing him at the end of the year. However, his successor held the Met post for a little over a year, and the next one was there about six months. Would Robinson's opponents say that they were also "stripped" of their posts at Met? Robinson, critics claim, is the "odd man out." Touhey declared: "Bill is an oddity." Noting that Robinson doesn't get the support of his fellow directors, Touhey says he will "build a consensus." Yes, voting with the other four directors to adopt measures unanimously would be a "consensus" of sorts. But what measures? It isn't Robinson who is "odd." It's many of those decisions that Robinson "tirades" against as the sole opponent. Typical of those decisions Robinson has opposed are moving district offices, a $100,000 advertising contract with a local newspaper, and other questionable decisions such as the district supporting more authority for an unelected, court-appointed Watermaster. Why should a water district have to advertise? That was one of the questions Robinson raised in his "tirades." After a ARCADIA - The City of Arcadia Recreation & Community Services Department – Senior Services Division is offering fall classes for adults (50 years of age and older) beginning the end of September. The course offerings include yoga, strength training, line dancing, oil painting/acrylics, watercolor painting, tai chi, zumba gold, aerobics, yogalates, and balance and mobility classes. Also offered is a NEW FREE program, Tech Talk! Tech savvy volunteens will pair up with senior citizens looking for as- decade of such advertising, he finally convinced the board to end the contract and save residential homeowners that cost. Robinson is branded a "politician" by his critics. Representing his constituents at Upper district is the only elective position he has ever held or sought. "Politician" is a derogatory term more appropriately applied to an office-seeking individual who moves from one elected office to another. Touhey, who wants to leave the West Covina council for a spot on the water board, is a better fit for the designation of "politician." Touhey has said that he won't hold both offices should he be elected to the water board. "I will resign from the city council." That isn't his choice to make. State law prohibits politicians from holding two elective offices simultaneously. He would have to give up one or the other. Could his decision to leave the council be determined by a desire among some West Covinans for his recall? Voters will have a choice in November. They can re-elect a director who has vigorously fought for homeowner interests in his effort to provide a reliable water source at a reasonable cost, opposing measures that are not beneficial to them. Or they can vote for a "politician" who promises to be one of the "old boy" network, cozying up to the private companies with a financial interest in water and water rates. The odd man out doesn't look so odd compared to the alternative. Ralph E. Shaffer resides in Covina.
