to be Master of Magdalene<br />
College, Cambridge<br />

Archbishop Rowan Williams has today announced<br />
his acceptance of <strong>the</strong> position of Master of<br />
Magdalene College, Cambridge with effect from<br />
January 2013. He will <strong>the</strong>refore be stepp<strong>in</strong>g down<br />
from <strong>the</strong> office of Archbishop of Canterbury at <strong>the</strong> end<br />
of December 2012.<br />
Dr Williams’ <strong>in</strong>tentions have been conveyed to<br />
The Queen, who is Supreme Governor of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong><br />
of England and who formally appo<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>the</strong> Archbishop<br />
of Canterbury.<br />
Dr Williams was appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>the</strong> one hundred<br />
and fourth Archbishop of Canterbury <strong>in</strong> 2002. He said<br />
today: It has been an immense privilege to serve as<br />
Archbishop of Canterbury over <strong>the</strong> past decade, and<br />
mov<strong>in</strong>g on has not been an easy decision. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
time rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re is much to do, and I ask your<br />
prayers and support <strong>in</strong> this period and beyond. I am<br />
abid<strong>in</strong>gly grateful to all those friends and colleagues<br />
who have so generously supported Jane and myself<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se years, and all <strong>the</strong> many diverse parishes and<br />
communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong> of England and <strong>the</strong> wider<br />
Anglican Communion that have brought vision, hope<br />
and excitement to my own m<strong>in</strong>istry. I look forward,<br />
with that same support and <strong>in</strong>spiration, to cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to serve <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>’s mission and witness as best I<br />
can <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> years ahead.<br />
Dr Williams will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to carry out all<br />
<strong>the</strong> duties and responsibilities of <strong>the</strong> Archbishop of<br />
Canterbury, both for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong> of England and <strong>the</strong><br />
Anglican Communion, until <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> year.<br />
The Crown Nom<strong>in</strong>ations Commission will<br />
consider <strong>in</strong> due course <strong>the</strong> selection of a successor./<br />

Anglican Women Theologians<br />
Meet <strong>in</strong> Canterbury<br />
Emergent Anglican women scholars from <strong>the</strong><br />
majority world and <strong>in</strong>digenous women study<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>ology ga<strong>the</strong>red on March 26 at <strong>the</strong> International<br />
Study Centre at Canterbury Ca<strong>the</strong>dral for a week-long<br />
program of mentor<strong>in</strong>g and strategis<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> leaders<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Global Anglican Theological Academy (GATA)<br />
GATA was one of <strong>the</strong> outcomes of <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
Anglican women <strong>the</strong>ological educators organized by<br />
<strong>the</strong> office of Theological Education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Anglican<br />
Communion (TEAC) <strong>in</strong> Canterbury, England, <strong>in</strong> 2009.<br />
Supported by TEAC, <strong>the</strong> GATA <strong>in</strong>itiative takes seriously<br />
<strong>the</strong> fourth mark of mission endorsed by <strong>the</strong> Anglican<br />
Consultative Council - <strong>the</strong> transformation of unjust<br />
structures, and <strong>in</strong> particular, those that function with<strong>in</strong><br />
our own <strong>Church</strong> household.<br />
The unacceptably low numbers of women of<br />
any age <strong>in</strong> leadership roles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological education<br />
and <strong>in</strong> representative roles across <strong>the</strong> Commissions<br />
and official bodies of <strong>the</strong> Anglican Communion has<br />
long been of concern to <strong>the</strong> founders of GATA.<br />
GATA seeks to nurture an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g pool of<br />
highly qualified younger women from <strong>the</strong> majority world<br />
who are capable of tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir places as leaders of<br />
educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions and <strong>in</strong> representative bodies <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Anglican Communion by develop<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>tentional<br />
and focused program of professional mentor<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
form<strong>in</strong>g a new community of <strong>in</strong>tellectual <strong>the</strong>ological<br />
discourse among <strong>the</strong> participants.<br />
The eight emergent women leaders ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />
were from New Zealand, Tonga, Malaysia, Philipp<strong>in</strong>es,<br />
Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and South India. Five<br />
are orda<strong>in</strong>ed and three are laywomen. Two have<br />
received <strong>the</strong>ir doctoral degrees recently, five were<br />
