Summer in the (Ho Chi Minh) City!
For most Dutch people living in Vietnam the summer
feeling is not about going to faraway beaches and
sunny destinations anymore, but about getting back
together with family and friends: still far away, but
also very much ‘at home’. What will probably never
change is the “Orange” feeling. We have seen it again
at our Queens Ball end of April. It’s amazing how much
Dutch paraphernalia is around in Ho Chi Minh City! I
am sure we will experience some Orange Fever again it
this summer with the EC Football and Olympic Games
coming up.
Just before summer break, I am happy we can present
to you the second issue of Double Dutch about Landbouw, Veeteelt en
Visserij. For both the Netherlands and Vietnam important sectors where
synergies are clear.
In March, the Ministers Koenders and Van Heemskerk visited Vietnam. A
successful mission for the Ministers and the DBAV. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank our DBAV members participating.
In April the DBAV held its Annual General Meeting. Four board members
were reinstalled for another year and presented the outlook and objectives
for 2008. I hereby would like to welcome Jos Langens as new member of the
board focusing on Business Activities. Jos Langens is founder and owner of
VNRecruitment, a recruitment company that focuses on middle- and higher
level positions. Jos Langens has his roots in Banking & Insurance, with ING
Group and Fortis Bank in the Netherlands and India. Furthermore, I would
like to wish Edwin Ibrahimi success with the new challenges lying ahead in
Singapore.
For coming year the board has set clear goals for both the NLV and DBAV
and we expect an energetic, enthusiastic and active year! You can read
more about this further in this issue. Besides the hard working volunteers of
Double Dutch, I also would like to thank all contributors of this issue and I
hope you will enjoy reading it.

Vietnam produces, markets
and sells baby and infant
foods, condensed milk, milk
powders, long-life milk and
yogurt drink.
Mission
Dutch Lady Vietnam is involved in
a “Dairy Development Program”
which is focussing on assistance
to small farmers. The program
aims to build a sustainable
relationship with local dairy
farmers as they will be suppliers
of fresh milk to the company. The
most important mission of the
Dairy Development Program is to
improve the infrastructure of the
milk collection network.
Milk collection chain
The company has organised
thirty-nine collection points
where farmers, scattered in the
countryside, can sell their fresh
milk directly to the company.
In addition there are three Milk
Chilling Centres established. All
collected milk from the farmers is
chilled at these locations before it
is transported to the processing
plant of Dutch Lady Vietnam.
Quality control of raw milk in
the collection chain is a key
success factor of the Dairy
Development Program. Not only
the farmers are educated on
producing and handling the raw
milk the best way from farms
to collection points but also the
Dairy Development Program staff
is well trained on the best way
to preserve milk quality within
the milk collection chain and is
equipped with a management
data system. The efficient quality
control system benefits the
farmers in producing high quality
and getting high milk income and
benefits Dutch Lady Vietnam to
have a high quality of raw milk
delivered from the farmers.
Transparent milk payment
method designed to encourage
dairy farmers to produce high
quality fresh milk. Farmers can
obtain a milk price that is higher
compared to the base price
depending on the milk quality
they deliver. Dutch Lady Vietnam
is the first company that pays this
premium in addition to the base
milk-price.
Support farm services
Dutch Lady Vietnam employed a
highly skilled team of extension
staffs who provide farmers with
free of charge services such
as artificial insemination and

her own model farm, where

programme provides an efficient
model of transfer of technology
for small farmers and larger
dairy farms. They have learned
new techniques to raise cows
and to improve the quality of the
milk. Farmers feel safer as risks
with regard to raising cows have
been reduced. They can rely on
assistance from the company’s
technicians whenever they
encounter problems.
Economic benefits are: farmers
escape from intermediate traders,
who traditionally dominate the
market, and they get favourable
prices selling milk directly to
the company. In addition, the
company is creating a milk
market for the farmers.

Dalat Hasfarm
Thomas Hooft
Situated in South-Vietnam, at
an altitude of 1500 meters,
Dalat is the city of eternal
spring and the centre of floriculture.
A jumble of small
patches of land and bamboo
greenhouses mark the
hillsides. The contrast with
the Dalat Hasfarm Flowers
nursery, just a few kilometres’
drive is big. Foil covered
greenhouses are organised in
lines on a flat hilltop. The first
greenhouse was built here in
1994.
The second location, a 250 ha
site called Green Mountain, is
situated 30 kilometres further
afield in a gigantic valley. Thomas
Hooft visits this site twice a
week; he inspects the nursery
and discusses the situation with
the site-manager. Hooft is Dutch
and general manager of Dalat
Hasfarm. It is soon obvious that
this location produces more than
only flowers. Hooft shows the
cowshed which houses 470 cows.
“This dairy farm was included in
the deal when we took over the
company from the government in
1996. The cows make up 2% of
our total business.” Next to the
cowshed is a piece of land with
broccoli. Vegetables are important
for the company; they represent
13% of our trade. The flowers are
in the greenhouses, from French
manufacturer Richelle, a bit
further down.
The chrysanthemum is the most
important product of the Green
Mountain location. Because
of the altitude of 1000m, the
temperatures are slightly too
high for roses. The climate is,
however, very suitable for the
leather fern and ruscus, you will
find 10 ha of this leaf green under
a canopy. “We want to extend this
to 30 or 35 ha.” And that is not
the only extension planned, a bit
further down, a group of workers
is setting up the frame for a new
greenhouse. We’re planning to
add 7 to 8 ha of greenhouses in
2008.
The 3 rd Dalat Hasfarm site is in
Da Qui (1350 m altitude) with
9 ha of greenhouses.Two years
after Thomas Hooft’s started in
Vietnam he got company from
another Dutchman, Bernhard
Schenke, whom he knew from
their time in Indonesia. Schenke
is now co manager.
Dalat Hasfarm acquires secondhand
materials, such as crates,
sorting-, bundling- and potting
machines and cold stores from
the Netherlands. The Dutch
influence is also visible in the
packing area, with buckets full of
tulips. “We sell them on the local
market, with the bulbs attached,
otherwise they wither too fast.
The ‘vase life’ is not too long in
this climate.”
Unbroken cold chain
The 2007-production amounted
to 70 million flowers, subdivided
in 30 million chrysanthemums, 14
million carnations, 8 million roses,
2.5 million lilies and 5.5 million
other products like ruscus, leather
fern and tulips. At present 72%
of our trade consists of export
to Japan (150 clients), Australia,
Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan
and Cambodia. Our markets are
fragmented and there are many
smaller, but growing markets, like
Russia The remaining 28% finds
its way to the local market.
In order to serve this market well
Dalat Hasfarm has 2 wholesale
centres and shops in Hanoi and
Ho Chi Minh City. The company
distinguishes itself for offering an
unbroken cold chain and products
that are special in this market and
therefore has the better florists as
clients.
Neighbouring China is not a
market for Dalat Hasfarm, at
least not directly, but possibly
circuitously as there is a dynamic
trade between Hanoi and
Kunming. The Netherlands is also
a country that’s missing in the list
of business partners. “With freight
charges at USD 2.50 – 3.00 per
kilo we can’t compete with Dutch
and African growers.”
What does find its way to Europe,
are cuttings for flowers and
potted plants. These are grown
on 7 ha, as per contract, for
Danish and Japanese dealers
entrusted with the propagation.
We are expecting to reap close on
100 million cuttings this year.
Becoming one with the
business
Hooft and Schenke are minority
shareholders. This ‘minority’
didn’t keep them from becoming
one with the business, and not
only financially. The life and work
suits them. Schenke speaks
highly of the Vietnamese and
their attitude. “They consider
us their equals and will discuss
anything in the open, which is
why they can run the business
when we are not there.”
Furthermore, Dalat is a nice place
to live with a good atmosphere
and wonderful climate. We
also appreciate the fact that
not everything has been prearranged,
as it would be in the
Netherlands. “Since we are the
only ones here with a large-scale
production, we have to figure
everything out ourselves. We
never get bored with our jobs.”

Jos Langens “You never know!”
When we talk about
recruitment in Vietnam, we
often compare, implicitly or
explicitly, with recruitment
in other parts of the world.
Often the conclusion is:
“recruitment in Vietnam is
different”.
Two major factors are responsible
for this difference.
First of all, we are dealing with
the specific culture of Vietnam.
Secondly there is a booming
economy that causes a shortage
of skilled and experienced staff.
It is important to discuss these
two causes because sometimes
certain features are connected to
the wrong cause.
The staff shortage in Vietnam is
quite similar to what happened
in the Netherlands between 1996
and 2000 when the economy
boomed and internet-related
companies popped up like
mushrooms. The shortage in
the labor market caused a lot of
turnover and head hunting.
I had the privilege to participate
in some interviews with newly
graduated applicants at ING
Bank, my employer at the time.
These applicants often showed a
rather arrogant and noncommittal
attitude. The biggest concerns
about the job seemed to be the
size and brand of the lease car
that came with the job. This
is similar to what is currently
happening in Vietnam. The lack
of skilled staff in Vietnam is by
many employees seen as the
perfect opportunity to make
interesting career moves. This
is nothing new or specific to
Vietnam, but a natural choice in
such circumstances for anyone
looking to advance their career.
But there are also differences
between the current situation in
Vietnam and the situation in the
late nineties in the Netherlands.
First of all, the salary breakdowns
in Vietnam and the Netherlands
are very different. For example,
in Vietnam, an inexperienced
graduate will usually make
between 300-350 USD (net/
month). In about 5 years, this
salary can easily become 5 times
higher (depending on sector
and type of company). On the
other hand a graduate in the
Netherlands starts on average
with EURO 2.350 a month. After
5 years, this salary will definitely
not be quintuple!
Secondly, due to inflation, salaries
increase much faster than they
would have in the Netherlands.
In 2007 the inflation in Vietnam
was 12.6%, and now in 2008
it is already more than 15%,
so it is no surprise that this will
give a pressure on salaries to be
increased as well.
These factors make it difficult
for a Vietnamese applicant to
estimate his/her (real) value as
an employee. As a result, quite a
few of them are almost constantly
roaming the markets in search
for better opportunities. Like one
of the candidates that applied for
a job through our company (and
who started only 3 months ago
with his previous employer) told
us strikingly: “you never know!”

Everyone who has ever placed
an advertisement in a newspaper
or on a job portal has probably
experienced this behavior by
having received large amounts
of applications, out of which the
majority had no match at all with
the criteria of the vacancy; a
result of the “you never know!”
attitude.
Besides the “you never know”
attitude, there are some other
unique features of recruitment in
Vietnam.
Inflation of titles
Vietnamese people are, just
like many of us, very sensitive
to status, therefore appealing
job titles might add to the
attractiveness of a position.
Equipped with this knowledge,
employers often successfully use
this tactic when persuading a
candidate to take a position.
Deflation of experience
Experience is scarce in Vietnam,
and because of this, it is highly
valued. An employee with 2 or 3
years of experience is considered
quite an expert and with 5 or
more years of experience, they
think they are top qualified. How
different again with the situation
in Western countries.
Flexibility in presenting facts
Vietnamese applicants are
sometimes flexible in presenting
the truth. This can be compared

with what the Dutch would call a
“little white lie”. Two examples:
one applicant wanted me to use
the latest updated version of
her CV. It turned out that in this
version she combined a mere 4
months working experience with
one employer with a much longer
working experience with another
employer, to make the CV look
better. The interesting part was
that she told me this without any
scruples when I “confronted” her
with this.
Another applicant, who accepted
a job with one of our clients,
informed us that she told her
boss she would be moving back
to her hometown to take care of
her grandmother. She did this out
of respect for her boss. Because
he was such a great guy, she was
afraid that if she told him that she
had accepted a better job, she
would break his heart. So, the
“flexibility” often comes from a
good heart!
Job hopping
Sometimes people talk about
job hopping in the Vietnamese
market as though this is typical
of the Vietnamese. I don’t
personally think that Vietnamese
employees are more frequent
hoppers than other employees
in a similar market. What I do
think is that Vietnamese people
are much more sensitive to their
working environment and that
they distinguish less between
work-life and private-life.
Mainly in middle and higher
positions, a negative working
environment (e.g. a bad boss)
is specified as the reason for
changing jobs. Individuals in
junior levels find salary increases
more appealing and therefore are
more likely to leave their jobs for
this reason.
My name is Rubert Konijn, I
am Agricultural Counsellor
at the Netherlands Embassy
in Bangkok, Thailand and
responsible for agricultural
relations with Vietnam.
Together with the Consulate
General in HCM and the
Embassy in Hanoi we try
to promote trade and
investments in the field of
agriculture.
More than half of the people
of Vietnam are dependant on
agriculture. Agriculture has a
contribution to GDP of around
20% and is a significant source
of foreign income through
export. We try to promote trade
and investments by organizing
trade missions, matchmaking
and seminars. We also advise
on aid programmes related
to agriculture and negotiate
market access problems with the
Vietnamese government. At the
moment we are conducting a
study into the different agri/food
opportunities in Vietnam together
with Rabobank agribusiness
research.
The Netherlands is the second
largest agricultural exporter
in the world, export from the
Netherlands to Vietnam is
substantial. However, agricultural
imports from Vietnam are four
times higher and very interesting
for Dutch companies.
The Netherlands imports fish,
coffee, pepper and cashew nuts
from Vietnam. Fruit, vegetables
and cocoa imports are rising.
Total agriculture imports were
235 million euro in 2007, an
increase of more than 20%
with the year before. These big
increases causes some concerns
as well. There are concerns about
the quality of the agricultural
products and the huge expansion
of, for example, coffee growing
and Pangasius farming. To tackle
some of these problems we have
set up Public Private Partnerships
in fisheries, cocoa and coffee.
Through these Public Private
Partnerships we try to increase
the export of sustainable
produced agricultural products
to the EU. Companies in the
Netherlands have a genuine
interest in producing in and trade
with Vietnam.
Private companies, governments
and NGO’s have the same
interest and try to solve issues
that may affect trade. From
2004 on we have experience in
the fish industry and for the last
year with cocoa and coffee. To
name a few examples: we have
trained Vietnamese in detecting
antibiotics and other residues
in fish, we have been asked by
the Vietnamese government to
make an Environmental Impact
assessment of Pangasius Farming
in the Mekong and to help
developing the national strategy
to increase ten times the cocoa
production in Vietnam.
These are just a few examples
of the interesting and promising
cooperation between the
Netherlands and Vietnam in
the field of agriculture. Should

The interest for Vietnam
by the Dutch business
community increases. The
visit of 2 Ministers (Minister
for Development Cooperation,
Bert Koenders and Minister
for Foreign Trade, Frank
Heemskerk) including 45
participants in the business
delegation is a good example
of this increasing interest.
This visit also visualised
the ambitions of the Dutch
government.
The main focus of the Dutch
government so far has been
on development cooperation
which will no longer be the
foremost important component
in our bilateral relation. Culture,
politics, agriculture, education
and Business relations will be
intensified and play a more
important role in the relationship
between Vietnam and the
Netherlands.
To realise these ambitions it is
of utmost importance to have
close contacts with the Dutch
business community in Vietnam.
I already met quite some DBAV
members and during the annual
meeting of the DBAV last April I
informed the persons present on
the main tasks of the economic
mission in Vietnam. I would like
to take the opportunity to do this
again and introduce you to the
persons dealing with the bilateral
economic relationship between the
Netherlands and Vietnam.
What?
What do we do at the embassy in
Hanoi and the consulate in HCMC
with regard to economic activities?
Improving the bilateral economic
relationship between The
Netherlands and Vietnam is our
overall aim. Encouraging Dutch
companies to invest in or export to
Vietnam, representing the interest

busy.
Besides that we try to improve the
business climate in Vietnam and
think about ways to strengthen
the economic ties between The
Netherlands and Vietnam on the
short and long term. In order
to realise our aims, providing
information is our core activity.
Advices on market potential,
information on different economic
sectors, finding out contactdetails
of relevant companies
and government institutions, and
supporting and advising Dutch
companies are examples. The
mission deals with the inquiries
from companies in Holland who
are considering investing in and
exporting to Vietnam.
Apart from the Embassy and
the Consulate-General various
organizations in the Netherlands
provide advices on doing business
with Vietnam. The most important
one is EVD – the agency of the
Ministry of Economic Affairs of
the Netherlands for international
business and cooperation. Please

On April 22 the Dutch Business
Association Vietnam has held its
2008 Annual General Meeting.
During the AGM a new board
was elected and the way forward
has been discussed. I would like
to share the highlights of this
meeting with you (minutes can be
found on our new website; www.
dbav.net).
The board has presented a clear
view about the objectives of
the DBAV, which are; Represent
our members with the Dutch
Government, Represent our
members with EuroCham, Guide
new companies into Vietnam,
Organize (network) activities for
our members.
The DBAV aims building a platform
where people can find each other
easily to build business discuss
their issues and socialize in a
typical ‘Dutch way’. At the AGM
the DBAV welcomed Monique
Bennema. Monique is the First
Secretary Economic & Commercial
Affairs at the Royal Netherlands
Embassy in Hanoi. Ms Bennema
will join some DBAV activities in
HCMC later this year as well. A
good cooperation with the Mission
is essential to serve as well our
current members as the new
companies coming to Vietnam.
Jos Langens and Tau Ngo will
both be responsible for the
DBAV business activities. With
this ‘tandem’ the DBAV wants to
strengthen its business activities
agenda for the coming year. Marjo
Vaessen will coordinate the myriad
activities the NLV organizes for
young and old.
With these enthusiastic board
members and our clear focus on
our objectives and goals, I am
very confident we can make it a

Bijna vakantie!
De vakantie staat voor de deur en iedereen is druk met afscheidsfeestjes,
etentjes, koffers pakken en in sommige gevallen ook de huisraad inpakken!
Zo ook Janneke van de redaktie! Zij gaat samen met man Philippe en kinders
Saskia, Anouk en Nikita terug naar hun huisje in het zuiden van Frankrijk.
Hun avontuur in Vietnam zit erop. De redaktie zal haar missen! Gelukkig is
er alweer enthousiaste versterking aangetreden: Renske ten Bosch is erbij
gekomen en achter de schermen heeft Violette Brand ook al het een en
ander bijgedragen.
Het is een komen en gaan van Nederlanders in Saigon, we hebben 4
gezinnen kunnen strikken om ons vragenlijstje in te vullen. Het is duidelijk
dat Vietnam bij iedereen een diepe indruk maakt.
Zonder al die komende en gaande mensen wordt de Nederlandse groep ook
‘vanzelf’ al uitgebreid met een baby boom. Van harte gefeliciteerd vanaf de
redaktie!
De aftrap voor de vakantieperiode is in ieder geval voetbal! Bar Number 5
heeft een groot scherm opgesteld om alle voetbalwedstrijden op te volgen.

Hoe lang hebben jullie in Vietnam gewoond?
Drie en half jaar.
Wat wordt de volgende bestemming?
Hongarije.
Wat ga je het meeste missen?
Esther: Wat niet?! De reizen, het leven buiten,
de mensen en zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan.
Johan: “Heo Quai” (gegrild varkensvlees met een
krokant laagje).
Wat is je meest positieve ervaring met de
Vietnamese cultuur?
Esther: De manier waarop ons personeel met ons
omgaat. Ze staan altijd voor ons klaar, zijn zo goed
voor ons en voor alle mensen die bij ons komen.
Johan: De activiteit van de mensen binnen ons
bedrijf en de flexibiliteit.
Wat is je meest negatieve ervaring?
Esther: Ik heb veel moeite met de ellende van de
Vietnamese mensen. Niet iedereen is te helpen en
dat vind ik moeilijk. Johan: het kunnen (of niet)
vertrouwen van mensen.

Zijn je verwachtingen die je destijds had toen

je naar Vietnam kwam, uitgekomen?
Esther: Meer dan! Ik had niet gedacht zoveel van
Vietnam te gaan houden. Johan: Het is heerlijk
om hier te wonen en vooral de avonden zijn niet
zo warm als in Bangkok waar we eerst gewoond
hebben, dat is erg prettig. Beroepsmatig zijn de
verwachtingen vele malen overtroffen.
Wat is je favoriete restaurant in HCMC en wat
bestel je daar meestal?
Esther: Camargue. Mijn favoriete gerecht is een
lekker biefstukje. Café Evita is ook favoriet bij mij.
Goed eten, bovendien voelt het als een tweede
huis. Ik heb daar zo veel uurtjes doorgebracht.
Johan: Camargue zonder twijfel, warme geitenkaas
vooraf en Osso Buco.
Heb je nog een leuke winkeltip?
Esther: Nee, ik ben niet zo’n winkelaar, doe liever
andere dingen.
Johan: Het Vietnamese shopje tegenover het An
Phu zwembad, die hebben prima kaas daar.
Wat vind je de leukste vakantiebestemming in
Vietnam?
Esther: Sa Pa en Bamboovillage in Mui Ne.
Johan : Palm Garden resort in Da Nang
Welke souvenirs heb je nog gekocht de laatste
paar weken in Vietnam?
We gaan nog een mooie bank kopen en van die
mooie lacquerware schalen.
Wat is het leukste feest dat je hier hebt
meegemaakt?
Esther: Dat is moeilijk kiezen. We hebben zoveel
geweldige feesten meegemaakt. Ieder jaar in
juni een feest voor de collega’s van Nutriway en
hun gezinnen, de celebrations in hotels met de
vrouwengroep, de funfair waar 30 kinderen uit een
weeshuis bij waren, de internationale weken op
school en zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan. Johan:
We vieren veel feest , prive maar ook met de zaak
om de mensen te stimuleren. Tevens vele bruiloften
meegemaakt waar ik erg van genoten heb.
Tenslotte: Nog advies voor de achterblijvers?
Esther: Doe iets voor het land. Johan: Ik sluit mij
hier helemaal bij aan, dit land is nog zo enorm
behoeftig, alleen moet je door de kunstmatige
muur kijken om het echt te zien.

Wat ga je het meeste missen?
Nooit beseft dat dit zo’n moeilijke vraag is. Ik ga
veel dingen missen ; altijd mooi weer, m’n werk,
de vele vrije uurtjes met de kinderen omdat het
huishoudelijk werk voor je wordt gedaan (jaah dat
gaan we zéker missen), lekker en goedkoop uit
eten, de massages en nog véél meer; maar het
allermeest ; het rijke sociale leven in het algemeen
en één goede vriendin in het bijzonder.
Wat is je meest positieve ervaring met
Vietnam?
Dat veel dingen zo makkelijk geregeld kunnen
worden en vaak op het laatste moment nog.
Reizen met de kinderen in Vietnam is me ook heel
goed bevallen ; dat is echt prima te doen en de
Vietnamezen zijn vaak zo lief voor kinderen.
Wat is je meest negatieve ervaring?
Mmm, moeilijke vraag weer. Ik zou zeggen dat
het verkeer en verkeersgedrag me echt niet kan
charmeren en dat de meest negatieve ervaring
was dat ik op de “eerste rij” zat bij een dodelijk
verkeersongeluk van een scooterrijder met een
vrachtwagen. Ik kan me ook nog steeds enorm
boeddhistisch en zen.
Zijn de verwachtingen die je destijds had toen
je naar Vietnam kwam uitgekomen?
Meer dan dat zelfs…. Ik had eigenlijk geen idee van
hoe het zou zijn in Vietnam te komen wonen en ik
moet zeggen dat we een fantastisch tijd hebben
gehad hier.

Vietnamees: tegenover Reunificatie-paleis, Westers:

Wat vind je de leukste vakantiebestemming in

Hoi An en Hué…. Veel mooie dingen bekijken maar
ook een prachtig strand.

De allerleukste ? Laatste Queensbal in de Refinery,

Double Dutch kennen Gerrie
Kunz als “meester Gerrie”.
Double Dutch interviewde
Gerrie Kunz (54) om iets meer
over de “niet – Nederlandse
school” kant van Gerrie te
weten te komen alsmede over
de 10 jaar die hij doorbracht
in Vietnam.
Wanneer ben je aangekomen
in Vietnam en wat was
daarvan de aanleiding?
De wens om me in de Tropen te
vestigen heeft altijd gespeeld. Ik
ben grootgebracht met verhalen
over Zuid-Oost Azië. Mijn vader
was militait en heeft veel tijd
doorgebracht in Indonesië. In
eerste instantie, wilde ik dan ook
naar Indonesië afreizen. Na een
vakantie in Vietnam, ben ik in
mei 1998 echter naar Vietnam
teruggekeerd omdat een vriend
van mij hier aan de Universiteit
werkte…. en inderdaad we zijn
nu ruim 10 jaar verder en pas nu
neem ik afscheid van Vietnam.
Wat zijn je eerste
herinneringen aan Vietnam ?
Mijn “Vietnam-tijd” begon met
een anekdote die ik nooit zal
vergeten. Ik kwam aan op het
vliegveld van Hanoi en toen ik na
die lange reis buiten kwam, stond
daar een horde Vietnamezen
te wachten met hun armen vol
bloemen. Ik keek over mijn
schouder naar achteren om te
zien wie met zoveel enthousiasme
werd ontvangen. Achter mij
liep echter niemand ; het bleek
een ontvangstcommitee voor

mij te zijn : ik kende niemand
maar al die mensen waren
gekomen om “de buitenlander” te
verwelkomen.
Vervolgens mocht ik helaas niet
bij deze vriendelijke mensen thuis
logeren ; dat kon als buitenlander
niet in die tijd. Ik bracht de
eerste nachten dus door in een
weeshuis… Ook herinner ik me
nog goed hoe ik meteen de eerste
ochtend om 4 uur wakker schrok
; uit luidsprekers buiten schalde
het Vietnamese volkslied…!
En hoe begon het met de
Nederlandse school ?
Al tijdens mijn vakantiereis
liep ik rond met de idee het
onderwijs ook in Vietnam op te
pakken. Meteen heb ik toen al
een bezoekje afgelegd aan het
Nederlands Consulaat om met
de destijdige Consul generaal
mijn plan te bespreken. Bij het
Consulaat heeft men toen een
klein onderzoekje gedaan naar
de behoefte aan Nederlands
onderwijs. Die behoefte bleek
te bestaan. Ik nam contact op
met NOB (Nederlands Onderwijs
Buitenland) en vervolgens
begon ik al in het najaar 1998
met Nederlandse les aan 16
leerlingen.
Wat deed je naast de
Nederlandse school ? In je
“vrije tijd” ?
Toen ik naar Vietnam kwam,
wist ik meteen dat ik me ook
echt onder de lokale bevolking
wilde vestigen. Eigenlijk breng
ik, afgezien van de lessen
Nederlands, nauwelijks tijd door
met andere Nederlanders. Ik
begeef me de meeste tijd onder
de Vietnamesen. Ik breng erg
veel tijd door op een schooltje
voor Vietnamese straatkinderen.
Ik geef de kinderen wat lessen
Engels, maar leer ze ook iets over
basisomgangsvormen, hygiene,
veiligheid enz.
Hoe heeft de Nederlandse
school zich ontwikkeld ?
Dat is enorm veranderd. Ik

begon met 16 leerlingen, daarna
is het een aantal jaren minder
geweest door de crisis in Z.O
Azie; en vanaf 2004/2005 is er
een enorme groei van leerlingen
geweest. De school telt nu
47 leerlingen. Door die groei
en mede naar aanleding van
inspectiebezoek is de school
ook professionneler geworden.
Ik moet eerlijk toegeven dat
de sfeer in de eerste jaren veel
gemoedelijker was en daar kijk ik
soms met nostalgie naar terug.
De werkdruk is groter geworden
maar dat is onvermijdelijk. De
school is kwalitatief gezien enorm
vooruit gegaan de laatste jaren.
En nu ?
Nu vertrek ik over een aantal
weken naar Italie. Ik ga daar
werken bij een houtbedrijf
dat gespecialiseerd is in
kindermeubels. Maar ik sluit
zeker niet uit over een tijdje weer
naar Vietnam terug te keren. Die
mogelijkheid blijft zeker open.
Op 10 mei nam de Nederlandse
School officiel afscheid van
Gerrie. Eind juni vertrekt Gerrie
naar Italie…. Kom je nog terug
naar Vietnam ? Deze vraag blijft
zeker open. Als ik terugkeer
naar Vietnam; en dat zal zeker
gebeuren, wil ik me echter in
het Noorden van Vietnam gaan
vestigen.

Het bestuur van de Nederlandse School Saigon
bestaat momenteel uit:

van Tiggelen (secretaris), Esther Rietberg
(bestuurslid cultuur), Christel Satter (bestuurslid
onderwijsondersteuning), Barbara Kruimer en Roy
van der Knaap (algemeen bestuursleden).
De leerkrachten Gerrie Künz (groepen 2, 3, 4, en 7)
en Bianca van Sluijs (groepen 1, 5, 6 en 8) geven
de taallessen op maandag t/m vrijdagmiddag op
de British International School en de International
School HCMC.
De cultuurlessen vinden 3 á 4 zaterdagmiddagen per
jaar plaats. Daarnaast besteedt de school natuurlijk
volop aandacht aan het vieren van de Nederlandse
feestdagen!

Inspectiebezoek april 2008
Inspecteur R. Roozenburg van de Onderwijsinspectie
Buitenland heeft op 21 en 22 april een bezoek
gebracht aan Ho Chi Minh City om de Nederlandse
School Saigon onder de loep te nemen. Hij heeft
o.a. aandacht besteed aan de kwaliteitszorg,
onderwijskundige en bestuurlijke zaken en de
leerresultaten. Ook heeft hij individuele gesprekken
gevoerd met leerkrachten, bestuursleden en ouders
van leerlingen over hun bevindingen.
De heer Roozenburg was uitermate tevreden met de
grote sprong voorwaarts die de Nederlandse School
Saigon sinds zijn laatste bezoek in 2006 gemaakt
heeft.
Het definitieve inspectierapport is bij aanvang van
het nieuwe schooljaar door iedereen in te zien op de
website.

Cultuurmiddag 10 mei 2008
Geschiedenis van Nederland: Gouden Eeuw,
Regenten & Koningen
De laatste cultuurmiddag van het schooljaar 2007-
08 had als onderwerp de Gouden Eeuw in de
Nederlandse geschiedenis. Naast de leerkrachten
Gerrie en Bianca, hadden Constance Schultsz en Mar
van Sluijs de uitnodiging aangenomen, om eens iets
van hun kennis met de groepen te delen. Zo heeft
Constance in groep 4 verteld en voorgelezen over de
Gouden Eeuw en heeft Mar voor groep 5 tot en met
8 een presentatie gegeven over de scheepvaart ten
tijde van de Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie.
Het was een leerzame, interactieve middag!
Nederlandse School Saigon bestaat 10 jaar!
Om te vieren dat de school dit jaar 10 jaar bestaat
hebben we aansluitend op de cultuurmiddag op 10
mei een spetterend feest gevierd!
Voor de inwendige mens werd gezorgd, terwijl er
door de jong & oud met open mond gekeken werd
naar de magische show! Een aantal kinderen had
voor de Bonte Avond een lied of dans voorbereid,
waarna ook het bestuur en de ouders niet achter
konden blijven en luidkeels het afscheidslied voor
meester Gerrie ten gehore hebben gebracht….
De kinderen van de Nederlandse School hadden
voor meester Gerrie een afscheidsboek gemaakt
met vele mooie herinneringen, foto’s en
gelukwensen voor de toekomst. Namens het bestuur
werd een persoonlijke versie van het spel Monopoly
Saigon overhandigd. Met een swingende disco kwam
dit jubileum en afscheidsfeest voor meester Gerrie
tot een mooi einde!

Hoi !
Mijn naam is Anouk.
Ik ben bijna 8 jaar. Ik zit in
groep 3 van de Nederlandse
school en in groep 4 van de
Franse school. Mijn verjaardag
is op 13 Juni.
Mijn lievelingskleur is blauw.
Ik ga deze zomer naar
Frankrijk verhuizen, naar
Bordeaux.
Ik woon al 4 jaar in Vietnam.
Mijn beste vriendin is Henriette. We spelen heel
vaak samen en ik hoop dat ze bij me in Frankrijk
komt logeren.
Ik zit op dansles en op theater .
Ik heb laatst meegedaan aan een dansshow. Het
was heel spannend want de hele zaal zat vol en het
was in een heel groot theater. Op de foto zie je mij
in mijn rode danskostuum. Ik deed de “charlestone
dans” uit de jaren 20.
Op de andere foto zie je mij tijdens de
Koninginnedag in Saigon. Dat was echt heel leuk
want er waren dit jaar paardjes en daar mocht
iedereen een rondje op rijden. Esther heeft weer
heel mooi gezongen en we mochten ook weer
een optocht maken door de BP Compound met
feestmuziek.
Dag allemaal. Tot ziens in Frankrijk!

Vanuit de NLV/DBAV wordt van 13 op 14 juni de wedstrijd Nederland-Frankrijk
aangeboden op groot scherm.
Natuurlijk ondersteunt met een happy hour, Nederlandse hapjes (bitterballen...)
en voor iedere supporter het “officiële” oranje shirt ter support.
We proberen onze Franse vrienden ook in grote getalen aanwezig te krijgen in dezelfde bar...
Vanaf 11pm voetbal kijken en Holland ondersteunen tegen la douce France
(wedstrijd start 01.45 uur).

Wie of wat brengt je naar Ho Chi Minh City?
Dutch Lady, de werkgever van Acronius.
Hoe lang zijn jullie hier inmiddels al en
hoelang verwachten jullie te blijven?
We zijn half april aangekomen en verwachten
drie jaar te blijven.
Waar woonden jullie voorheen?
In Arnhem.
Is dit de eerste keer dat jullie in Vietnam
zijn? Indien jullie al eerder hier zijn
geweest wat waren de ervaringen wat is er
inmiddels veranderd?
Elf jaar geleden zijn we hier ook geweest. We
waren toen samen op wereldreis en hebben
o.a. een maand in Vietnam met de rugzak rond
getrokken. Er is absoluut veel veranderd. Je ziet
nu bijna geen fietstaxi’s meer, maar des te meer
auto’s en brommers. Er zijn inmiddels veel meer
westerse producten te krijgen. Zo hebben we
destijds heel lang naar scheerschuim gezocht,
terwijl dat nu prima te verkrijgen is. Ook leek
de armoede toen veel groter en waren er meer
(gehandicapte) bedelaars in het straatbeeld.

Wat zijn de verwachtingen van jullie
verblijf in Vietnam?
Een unieke ervaring voor ons allemaal, waarbij
we naast een uitdagende job voor Acronius veel
van het land, de mensen en de cultuur willen
gaan zien.
Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen?
Met name positief. We verbazen ons regelmatig
en genieten er van om HCMC, met al haar
bedrijvigheid, en de rest van Vietnam te
ontdekken.
Kun je iets meer vertellen over het bedrijf
waarvoor de uitzending plaats vindt?
Acronius werkt bij Dutch Lady als plantmanager.
Dutch Lady kennen jullie vast van o.a. de melk,
drinkyoghurts en het melkmeisje.
Wat mis je het meest uit Nederland?
Behalve familie en vrienden het zelf overal naar
toe kunnen fietsen, wandelen en autorijden. En
Acronius gaat ook de zomerfeesten missen.
Wat heb je nog extra ingekocht voordat
jullie naar Vietnam gingen verhuizen en
waarom? Hagelslag, een broodbakmachine en
heel veel pakken broodbakmeel. Ben benieuwd
hoe vaak we de broodbakmachine gaan
gebruiken i.v.m. prima brood van Bread ’n
Breakfast in de buurt!
Wat is het item in je container dat je zeker
niet zou willen missen?
De echt belangrijke items, zoals de laptop en
knuffels van Femke en Stan hebben we al in het
vliegtuig mee genomen.
Gaan jullie Vietnamees leren?
Ja, Renske wil na de zomer gaan beginnen.

Martin: Initieel de relatie en de uitdaging van
leven en werken in een totaal andere cultuur, nu
ook voor het werk
Van: Het werk, de uitdaging en kans om zelf de
Vietnamese cultuur, geschiedenis en mensen te
leren kennen
Hoe lang zijn jullie hier inmiddels al en
hoelang verwachten jullie te blijven?
Martin verhuist in Juni (’08) naar HCMC en Van
woont hier sinds einde januari (’08). Hoe lang
we hier uiteindelijk zullen wonen hangt met
name af van ons werk. We stellen ons nu in op
een periode van 3 tot 4 jaar.
Waar woonden jullie voorheen? Martin
woonde afgelopen jaar in Zug (Zwitserland).
Daar voor heeft Martin 2 jaar in Rotterdam
gewerkt en gewoond. Van komt uit Rotterdam.
Is dit de eerste keer dat jullie in Vietnam
zijn? Martin: Ik ben 2 maal eerder in Vietnam
geweest, maar beide keren slechts resp. 1 en
2 weken. Beide bezoeken in het licht van de
voorgenomen verhuizing.
Van: Ik ben hier 3 maal eerder geweest, de
eerst 2 keer voor familie bezoek.
Wat is er veranderd? Veel. Maar wat mij het
meest opvalt is de veranderde mentaliteit van
lokale Vietnamezen over leven in Vietnam. Waar
een aantal jaar terug “het buitenland” nog een
utopie was voor groot deel van de bevolking,

lijkt dat nu allang niet meer het geval. Lokalen
geloven sterk dat de mogelijkheden voor hen
hier vele male groter zijn dan elders. Voor
mij zegt dit veel over de sterke ontwikkeling
die Vietnam in de afgelopen jaren heeft mee
gemaakt; economisch, maatschappelijk en
waarschijnlijk ook politiek gezien.
Wat zijn de verwachtingen van jullie
verblijf in Vietnam? We verwachten dat dit
een bijzonder verrijkende ervaring gaat worden.
Professioneel en persoonlijk.
Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? Wisselend.
Het is erg leuk en inspirerend om nieuwe
mensen te leren kennen, die vaak ook een heel
ander leven leiden dan jezelf hebt (gedaan). Ook
de grote gelaagdheid en de afstand tussen de
lagen in de maatschappij vind ik erg interessant
om te zien. Maar soms is het ook een beetje
schrikbarend om te zien hoe sommige zaken nog
in de kinderschoenen staan hier.
Kun je iets meer vertellen over het bedrijf
waarvoor de uitzending plaats vindt?
Friesland Foods Dutch Lady Vietnam is een van
de opco’s van Friesland Foods. Een Nederlandse
zuivelcoöperatie die internationaal opereert. In
Vietnam maken we verschillende zuivelproducten
onder de merken Dutch Lady, Yomost, Friso,
Fristi en Ovaltine.
Wat denk je het meest te zullen missen uit
Nederland? Van: Mensen, mensen, mensen!
Familie en vrienden. Kleine dingen/routine als
in het weekend een café latte, appeltaart en
bitterballen aan de leestafel in Dudok, snuffelen
in Donner en (goed) openbaar vervoer tram &
metro. Het klimaat. Een trui aan kunnen doen.
Martin: nog niets
Wat heb je nog extra ingekocht voordat
jullie naar Vietnam gingen verhuizen?
Van: Unox rookworst, volgens mij niet te krijgen
hier en boeken (niet zeker of alle boeken hier te
kopen zijn).
Wat is het item in je container wat je zeker
niet zou willen missen? Eigenlijk niets (Van).
Willen/gaan jullie Vietnamees gaan leren?
Ja, allebei.
