Typically Dutch 

Hopefully all of you enjoyed the Queens Day ball and reception last month 

and feel more ‘typically Dutch’ than ever. Also because that is the topic of this 

edition of the Double Dutch. Have you ever noticed that the further you get 

away from your own culture, the more fun and important it seems to maintain 

your own country’s traditions and customs? Judging by the orange enthusiasm 

for recent Dutch events, many of you may agree with this. 

So, what is ‘typically Dutch’? We have tried to find the answer to this question 

by interviewing people who work closely with fellow Dutch on a day to day 

basis. Have a look at the answers given by Belgian Anneleen who works at the 

DBAV, Vietnamese employees of Royal Haskoning and household helpers, 

working for Dutch families and see if you can relate. 

Also, in the last edition, we asked you to send us your best typically Dutch 

photos. Out of all the great pictures that we received, a jury selected the 

winning photo, which is on the cover of this edition. Congratulations to 

Carla Rijnders-Matti for this beautiful picture and the eternal fame of having 

her picture on our cover! Have a look at page 13 to see more typically Dutch 

pictures. 

In this issue of Double Dutch we are also pleased to introduce the new board 

of the DBAV. All 8 members very much look forward to taking on their roles 

and would love to hear from you if you have any suggestions or ideas. Read on 

page 11 to find the new board members presented. 

Finally, as you might have noticed, we have made some improvements to the 

layout of our magazine in order to make it easier for you to read. We would like

A warm welcome to you all and especially to our new members, NBM Trading 

Company, Dragon Capital, NL Industrial Automation, Intereffekt Frontier 

Fund Vietnam, Fresh Studio Innovations Asia Limited and Concrete Colours 

International. We hope to meet you soon (again) in person at one of our 

upcoming events. For this we can especially recommend our monthly network 

drinks, each third Thursday of the month (Derde Donderdag Dutch Drinks) at 

Vasco’s. It’s good to see that more and more companies are joining the DBAV, 

this will allow us to organize more activities and will create more exchange in 

experience and knowledge. 

We also are happy to present you the new board of the DBAV that was elected 

at the Annual General Meeting on the 23rd of March. Six members of the 

previous board were re-elected and two new members were chosen. They 

will all introduce themselves in this issue. The new board will actively commit 

themselves to support existing and new activities of the DBAV. Each board 

member will also focus on one or more key areas. 

Regretfully we have had to say goodbye to Mark van den Assem, who has 

left the board after many years with us (including as Chairman) due to his full 

schedule at TNT. Mark, thanks for all of your contributions and the good work 

you have done! 

As we see business in Vietnam taking off in various areas, we can expect an 

exciting period in the months ahead. Exciting is also what our annual Queens 

Ball that took place on the 15th of May was. We worked very hard to make it 

another memorable event. Thank you to everyone who helped us make this 

Orange evening a success! 

The theme of this edition ‘Typically Dutch’ makes me very curious. Of course 

windmills, wooden shoes and tulips are considered typically Dutch. We actually 

just chose the tulip as the symbol for our new DBAV logo! But, I guess that 

the best way to find out what is ‘typically Dutch’, is through the eyes of others. 

What is typically Dutch to one person will not be typically Dutch to another. 

One of the nice things about living abroad is that you yourself can also become 

aware of what is typical of your own culture. As a Dutch person, every time 

you visit the Netherlands after a longer period abroad, you may increasingly find 

yourself noticing those typically Dutch things. It’s only then that you realize that 

with every day that you live in Vietnam you become more and more Asian.

Working with the Dutch 

Who better to ask about typically 

Dutch behaviour than the people 

working with them. As a Belgian 

‘red devil’ in the orange DBAV team, 

we asked Anneleen Erlingen, office 

manager, about her experiences 

with the Dutch. 

How long have you been working 

with Dutch people? 

In Vietnam, about 4 months and 

in previous jobs I also worked with 

Dutch people on a daily basis. 

Sidenote: my best friends here in 

HCMC are all Dutch (which pretty 

much says it all)! 

What were your first impressions 

of working with the Dutch, when 

you started working here? 

Open-minded, (a bit too) talkative, 

cheerful, extravert (especially the 

ladies), love discussions but are bad 

decision-makers, colorful. 

In your view, what are the main 

differences between the Dutch and 

the Vietnamese? 

Dutch people are more extravert and 

less ‘shy’ but I don’t know if that’s 

something typically Dutch or simply a 

Western-Vietnamese cliché. 

What are the similarities? 

Making decisions can be difficult but 

they both smile their way through and 

are always willing to help out! 

What has been your most ‘typically 

Dutch’ moment? 

Apart from my official office hours, 

it definitely was the night out to 

‘het Leidens Ontzet’. Dutch people, 

Dutch songs and Dutch food all 

over the place…I loved it (except for 

the musical part, although it became 

funny after a couple of glasses of 

wine). 

Can you give an example of 

a funny moment in which the 

cultural differences came forward? 

Even though we speak the same 

language it sometimes leads to small 

confusions; ‘een kleed’ (blanket in 


Dutch) is the Flemish word for dress 

(‘jurk’ in Dutch). In Flemish we ‘trek’ 

(pull in Dutch) a photo, we don’t 

‘neem’ it (Dutch voor take) “Trek een 

foto van mij in mijn mooie kleed!” 

Furthermore, we planned a girlsweekend-out 

quite some time ago, but 

it has taken forever to arrange a date 

and finally get it booked (I hope that 

when this is published we will have 

our tickets in hand!). 

What advice would you give to a 

Dutch person regarding working 

in Vietnam? 

As to any other expat: “embrace the 

culture, stay true to your Dutch self 

and enjoy!” 

What advice would you give to 

a Vietnamese person regarding 

working with Dutch people? 

Enjoy the Dutch spirit as much as I 

do!

Dutch for the last 9 and 14 years, 

respectively, for their view. 

Any advice to a Dutch person 

regarding working in Vietnam? 

Thanh advises Dutch people to 

keep in mind that business in 

Vietnam is not transparent like in the 

Netherlands. “In order to keep that 

difference from limiting your dealings 

and business with the Vietnamese 

you should be very clear as to the 

requirements that will satisfy your 

Vietnamese clients, so that you can 

meet their expectations.” Also, if you 

want to build strong relationships 

with your Vietnamese colleagues and 

clients be understanding of different 

working methods. If someone 

doesn’t plan as well as you might 

expect, make your expectations clear 

and work together to find a suitable 

working method. 

Hoa agrees that it is very important 

to respect each other and our 

differences. This is especially 

important on a day to day basis. 

“Be respectful about Vietnam and 

its people and culture, and do not 

make condescending remarks about 

Vietnam or the Vietnamese in front 

of your Vietnamese colleagues and 

staff.” 

What advice would you give to 

a Vietnamese person regarding 

working with Dutch people? 

Thanh advises to really take the time 

to understand your Dutch colleague’s 

or client’s ideas. The Dutch tend to 

be much more thorough and detailed, 

and expect the same from you. If you 

sense confusion, be open regarding 

misunderstandings so that you can 

meet each other’s expectations. 

Also, be prepared to plan extensively, 

including how each item is carried 

out, when it will be finished and the 

expected level of quality.

Drinking water know-how 

Hans Put, Resident Distribution Expert USP/ SAWACO Project 

For the Dutch, clean water is 

nothing special. In Holland we 

turn on the tap and safe drinking 

water comes out. But that is not 

the case for many residents of 

Ho Chi Minh City. Despite the 

importance of clean drinking 

water, many local residents have 

either only access to unsafe 

drinking water, or, in some cases, 

no access to drinking water at all. 

Vitens-Evides International, the 

international branch of the two 

largest Dutch water companies 

Vitens and Evides, is helping to 

solve this problem. Hans Put, 

Resident Distribution Expert of the 

USP/SAWACO Project, was sent out 

by Vitens-Evides International (VEI) 

to Vietnam per September 2009. 

Currently, he and his colleague Sytse 

Jarigsma (Resident Project Director) 

are helping local water companies to 

implement practical solutions in order 

to meet the need for clean drinking 

water in Ho Chi Minh City. 

Due to the growing number of 

inhabitants, the demand for clean 

drinking water in Ho Chi Minh City 

is very large and growing. This is 

one of the greatest challenges for 

the local water company SAWACO. 

To deal with these challenges, a 

Water Operator Partnership (WOP) 

between SAWACO, the Ministry of 

Foreign Affairs, the Dutch embassy 

and Vitens-Evides International was 

officially launched in January 2008. 

Vitens-Evides International plans 

to help SAWACO with structural 

improvement and professionalization 

of the management and maintenance 

of its primary processes. In concrete 

terms, the objectives are to improve 

the quality of the water produced, 

to increase production volume, to 

restrict ‘non revenue water’ and to 

improve distribution.

water for HCMC 

Hans Put: “In the Utility Support 

Programme (USP) we work together 

with local water company SAWACO 

to improve their water distribution 

network. The content of our work is 

not only to bring back ‘non revenue 

water’, which is currently over 30%, 

but also to make sustainable changes 

in the organization and give training 

and coaching to the Vietnamese. 

We do this by sharing our knowhow 

and experience of maintenance, 

treatment and management of 

drinking water supplies with the local 

water companies based on the ‘share 

rather than give’ principle. One of 

our mottos is ‘in order to sustain 

the improvements we educate and 

train local personnel.’ Meanwhile, we 

also implement the ‘Water For Life 

Project’ in Cho Lon, in which we 

bring water to areas where poverty is 

very high.” 

“Our special approach is the 

implementation of the ‘caretaker 

principle’ in the organization, 

which is a totally new concept to 

the Vietnamese water business. 

A ‘caretaker’ is a person who is 

responsible for a dedicated area, in 

which he takes care of tasks like the 

distribution network, the maintenance 

of the network and customer 

relationships.” 

The USP aims for implementation 

of the project by the end of 2011, 

leaving one and a half years ahead for 

the project’s successful contribution 

to HCMC’s supply of the most 

fundamental element in life, clean 

drinking water.

Bringing Holland to Vietnam

Tulips, windmills, wooden shoes 

and cheese are typical Dutch 

products. Cruising the canals of 

Amsterdam and walking around 

the Keukenhof leaves a deep 

impression on tourists visiting the 

Netherlands. For Dutch people 

living abroad, these types of things 

are very treasured and missed. 

Typically Dutch traits span more 

than just that. The Dutch people 

are known to be determined and 

stubborn. 

Determined in 

grasping business 

opportunities 

and stubborn 

in not giving 

up without 

trying again and 

again. These 

characteristics 

contribute to 

Dutch business 

people being 

pioneers in 

international 

business. 

Internationally we are famous for our 

struggle to keep dry feet, shaping a 

can-do attitude. The Netherlands’ 

many bridges, dykes, windmills and 

pumping stations give it a unique 

appearance and illustrate its long 

struggle against the sea. Centuries 

of experience have made the 

Netherlands the globally recognised 

leader in water management, 

important knowledge in these 

uncertain times of climate change. 

With Vietnam listed as one of the 

most vulnerable countries affected by 

climate change, there are many areas 

in which the Dutch can provide 

expertise and assistance to Vietnam; 

integrated water resources 

management, flood control, delta 

technology and coastal zone 

management. 


Former Minister of Agriculture 

and former chairman of the Delta 

commission in the Netherlands, Cees 

Veerman, together with members 

of the Delta commission, attended 

the conference on climate change 

response plans for the Mekong Delta 

held at the beginning of April this 

year in Can Tho City. The Dutch 

expertise in water management has 

always been highly regarded by the 

Vietnamese. “Holland branding” has 

been successful in the water sector 

and its scope and effectiveness can be 

broadened into other sectors. 

Holland branding activities and 

events organised by the Dutch 

government aim at boosting the 

positive economic image of Dutch 

businesses abroad by highlighting the 

offer of the Netherlands, or a group 

of Dutch companies in particular, and 

creating possibilities to capitalise on 

commercial opportunities. 

Our participation in the kick off 

celebration of the Ha Noi millennium 

anniversary is an example. A tulip 

carpet, made of 22,000 tulips as 

a gift from the Dutch Minister of 

Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, 

Gerda Verburg, was presented during 

the Hanoi Flower Festival early 

January this year. Almost three million 

Vietnamese people and foreign 

tourists flocked to Hoan Kiem Lake. 

No doubt the Dutch tulips were one 

of the highlights of the event as this 

was the first time Vietnam enjoyed the 

impressive beauty and abundance of 

Dutch tulips. The Dutch presence was 

highly recognized and appreciated. 

The time is right to further solidify 

our presence in Vietnam. Plans to 

bring a ‘Holland Village’ to Vietnam 

for a few weeks both in Ha Noi 

and Ho Chi Minh City are being 

discussed. The ‘Holland Village’ 

consists of a number of traditional 

Dutch Houses, a large windmill, a 

wooden shoe maker, plus a number 

of typically Dutch attractions, such 

as a fish stand, a cheese stand and a 

street organ. An enormous amount 

of work, money and effort are 

required to make this happen. 

Sponsorship from the private sector 

will be essential and many Dutch 

companies have already expressed 

their interest in sponsoring this event. 

They will be contacted shortly with 

details on how to give this a concrete 

form. The Village will offer sponsors 

a high-profile opportunity for 

Holland branding of their products 

and services.

Intereffekt Frontier Vietnam Fund 

The gross domestic product of 

Vietnam has been growing for 

some time by 7 to 8% average 

per annum. Due to the improved 

business climate, the country is 

increasingly seen as an alternative 

to China and India. After the 

decrease of the Ho Chi Minh 

City index by almost 70% in 2008, 

the Vietnamese stock market 

offers an interesting potential 

market for investors who believe 

in the structural economic rise of 

Vietnam. 

Although the Vietnamese market is 

difficult for private investors, a fund 

is a good alternative for investing 

in individual Vietnamese stocks.

father and a Vietnamese mother. 

After many years of working in

Management, he made the move 

back to his roots in Vietnam to 

follow his entrepreneurial spirit. 

After 4 months in Ho Chi Minh City,

die in Vietnam wonen niet belasten. 

Maandelijkse en jaarlijkse uitkeringen 

van pensioenen die zijn opgebouwd 

tijdens het werk, pensioenreserves 

in BV’s (bijvoorbeeld als directeur/ 

grootaandeelhouder) kunnen dus 

belastingvrij naar Vietnam worden 

overgemaakt. 

Aan de andere kant kent Vietnam 

geen personenbelasting op bepaalde 

buitenlandse pensioenen. Daarom is 

in Vietnam een aantal pensioenen uit 

buitenlandse bronnen vrijgesteld van 

belasting. 

Het ontbreken van belastingheffing 

zowel in Nederland als in Vietnam 

is dus mogelijk de moeite waard om 

eens nader te onderzoeken...

STAGEOPDRACHT GEZOCHT! 

Wij zijn twee vierdejaars Technisch Bedrijfskunde studentes die op zoek zijn 

naar een bacheloropdracht bij een bedrijf of instelling in Vietnam voor een 

periode van 10 weken startend vanaf half augustus 2010. 

De bacheloropdracht is een afsluiting van de bacheloropleiding in de vorm van 

een stage. Wij kunnen bij uw vraagstuk een passend onderzoek formuleren

Met wie hebben we het genoegen? 

Ik ben Kim Sanders, 30 jaar. 

Wat brengt je naar Ho Chi Minh City? 

Mijn werk. Ik werk voor VSO (Voluntary Service 

Overseas). Zij werken samen met verschillende lokale 

partnerorganisaties. Als logopedist werk ik nu voor 

de universiteit van onderwijs, bij de Faculteit Speciaal 

Onderwijs, waar ik de docenten train en samen met de 

docenten een curriculum over communicatie ga schrijven. 

Waar woonde je voorheen? Hoe lang ben je hier 

inmiddels al en hoe lang verwacht je te blijven? 

Het afgelopen jaar heb ik in Hanoi gewoond. Mijn werk als 

VSO’er is daar begonnen. Ik ben nu inmiddels een maand 

hier en blijf één jaar. 

Wat verwacht je van je verblijf in HCMC? 

Ik verwacht dat ik hier net zo’n leuk leven op ga bouwen 

als in Hanoi. Met een leuke groep internationale en lokale 

vrienden waarmee ik sportieve dingen kan ondernemen, 

een biertje kan drinken, ‘street food’ kan eten en motorbike 

tripjes kan maken. Op werkgebied verwacht ik de uitdaging 

te vinden die ik de laatste maanden in Hanoi niet meer had. 

Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? 

Het eten is hier over het algemeen veel lekkerder dan in het 

noorden en ook het klimaat is aangenamer. De ‘locals’ zijn 

erg vriendelijk, maar hun zuidelijke accent is even wennen. 

Ik ben verhuisd naar een andere stad in hetzelfde land, 

maar het voelt als een ander land. 

Wat mis je het meest uit Nederland? 

De makkelijke ‘outdoor’ opties in Nederland. Alles is daar 

snel en makkelijk te bereiken. Binnen twee uur ben je van 

Utrecht in Zuid-Limburg om een lekker weekendje te 

kamperen en te mountainbiken. Ook mis ik mijn dagelijkse 

fietstochtje over de hei naar mijn werk. Frisse lucht en geen 

getoeter van honderden motorbikes. 

Wat mis je niet? 

Het halfuur-systeem op mijn werk. Ieder uur een nieuwe 

behandeling en iedere vijf minuten moeten registreren. 

Nu ben ik veel flexibeler in hoe ik mijn tijd op mijn werk 

indeel. 

Wat heb je meegenomen naar Vietnam dat je zeker 

niet zou kunnen missen? 

Het foto-verhalenboekje dat gemaakt is door mijn 

vrienden en familie in Nederland. 

Wat ga je zeker doen tijdens je verblijf in HCMC? 

Genieten van mooie weekendtripjes op de motor met 

vrienden, regelmatig terug naar Hanoi om daar te gaan 

klimmen in Halong Bay.

Heb je al een opmerkelijke Vietnamese situatie 

meegemaakt? 

Mijn vertaalster werd ineens ontslagen zonder dat ik er 

iets vanaf wist. Ze werkte alleen voor mij en niemand 

heeft mij gevraagd naar mijn mening. De reden bleek 

uiteindelijk dat ze had aangegeven dat ze het niet trok 

om zeven dagen in de week te werken. Ze vroeg of ze 

af en toe een doordeweeks dag vrij mocht nemen om dit 

te compenseren. De directrice van de organisatie waar ik 

werkte vond dit getuigen van een verkeerde attitude en 

heeft haar ontslagen. 

Heb je vragen voor mensen die hier al langer zijn? 

Ja! Wie weet waar ik kan volleyballen? Ik ben op zoek naar 

een team (‘locals’ en/of ‘expats’) waarbij ik me aan kan 

sluiten.

Dynamiek! Toch? 

De vader van mijn vriendin 

stuurt regelmatig Nederlandse 

krantenberichten op. Dat doet hij 

al jaren. Ik neem de stapel door 

en pik er één artikel uit. Daarin 

lees ik dat Vietnam zich opmaakt 

voor acquisities in Nederland. Het 

Aziatische land mikt vooral op de 

kennis en innovatie in ons kleine 

kikkerland. Vietnam omarmt daarmee 

de VOC-mentaliteit waar demissionair 

premier Balkenende groot mee is 

geworden: “Over de grenzen heen kijken, 

dynamiek! Toch?” 

‘De eeuw van Azië’ is één van 

mijn favoriete boeken die ik heb 

meegenomen uit Nederland. Hierin 

beschrijft Kishore Mahbubani de 

machtsverschuiving van het Westen 

naar het Oosten. Eeuwenlang keken 

Chinezen, Indiërs en Vietnamezen toe 

hoe eerst de Europeanen en later de 

Amerikanen de wereldgeschiedenis 

vorm gaven. Toen ik het boek las, 

bekroop mij steeds meer het gevoel 

dat Nederland zelfingenomen is. 

Waarom houdt Wilders ons nog in 

de greep? In tijden van klimaatcrisis, 

economische crisis en voedselcrisis 

draait het in Nederland om de 

kabinetscrisis. De Nederlandse 

regering gaat ten onder aan gekissebis 

over een wel of niet gevraagde 

NAVO-brief. 

Typisch Nederland. Ik denk dat het 

landschap hier een rol in speelt. In de 

zeventiende eeuw hebben ingenieurs 

het Hollandse landschap gemaakt. 

Wij zijn er internationaal bekend mee 

geworden: het vlakke polderland met 

uitgestrekte horizon. Het landschap 

kende geen belemmering. Nou ja, 

enkel de ‘Dutch Mountains’ dan, waar 

The Nits en Freek de Jonge over 

hebben gezongen. Omdat ons uitzicht 

onbeperkt was, werden onze ideeën 

grensoverschrijdend. 

Wij vertrokken naar landen overzee en maakten nieuwe 

steden, zoals New York en Batavia. Het tij is gekeerd. 

Door een stijgende zeespiegel moesten wij de dijken 

verhogen en in combinatie met de zakkende Hollandse 

bodem, verschuilen wij ons steeds meer achter de ‘Dutch 

Mountains’. 

Natuurlijk is ook dit beeld van Nederland opgeblazen. 

Maar het zegt wel meer over onze mentaliteit dan 

klompen, molens en Delfts blauwe tegeltjes. Nog steeds is 

de Nederlandse koopmansgeest sterk vertegenwoordigd 

in het buitenland. Ons grote voordeel is, dat wij denken 

de wereld aan te kunnen zonder een politiek standpunt 

in te nemen. Vijanden kennen wij niet, want daar kunnen 

wij geen zaken mee doen. En wij zijn de meesters van de 

pragmatische oplossing; van ieder nadeel maken wij ons 

voordeel. Dit praktisch inzicht is misschien wel ontstaan 

door de noodzaak om onszelf te beschermen tegen het 

wassende water. De waterschappen zijn niet voor niets 

onze oudste vorm van politiek bestuur. Het water dwong 

ons om samen te werken, te overleggen en compromissen 

te sluiten. 

De leeuw en de draak hebben elkaar gevonden. Uit het 

krantenbericht blijkt, dat de Vietnamese handelsmissie 

vooral geïnteresseerd was in de Nederlandse kennis over 

windenergie, watermanagement en landbouwtechniek. 

Ook namen ze een kijkje in Almere, het toonbeeld van de 

innovatieve Nederlandse ingenieurskunst. De nieuwe stad 

als export product. Waarom ook niet?

Bianca van Sluijs 

We zitten midden in de laatste periode van dit schooljaar. 

Juf Aletta en juf Bianca zijn alweer bezig met de 

voorbereiding van de laatste hoofdstukken/thema’s van 

de lesmethode en de afsluitende CITO toetsen voor de 

jaargroepen. De laatste cultuurmiddag was op zaterdag 

15 mei: helden en sprookjes stonden in deze les centraal. 

Zoals gebruikelijk heeft Dominique deze middag Aletta en 

Bianca versterkt. 

Fotowedstrijd NOB 

De stichting NOB bestaat 30 jaar en organiseert een 

fotowedstrijd om het Nederlands onderwijs in het 

buitenland in beeld te brengen. Ze beloont de mooiste of 

verrassendste foto van een onderwijs- of schoolsituatie 

met een boekenbon van 300 euro, te besteden aan 

bibliotheekboeken voor de school. We hopen dus dat veel 

ouders mooie foto’s hebben gemaakt tijdens het feest op 

koninginnedag en deze insturen voor 1 juni! 

Thema ‘Lucht’ 

In groep 7 en 8 hadden we het thema ‘Lucht’: vanuit de 

lucht gezien, ademhalen, ergens lucht van hebben gekregen 

en... een rotte eierenlucht! De kleuters hadden namelijk 

eieren geschilderd voor Pasen, waardoor we een week later 

gedwongen werden een ander lokaal te zoeken, vanwege de 

achtergebleven eieren in de prullenbak! Hoog tijd om met 

een nieuw thema te beginnen! 

Spreekwoord van de week 

Het figuurlijk taalgebruik in spreekwoorden en gezegden 

blijft voor veel leerlingen erg moeilijk. Het leidt elke 

week weer tot fantasievolle beschrijvingen, als er naar de 

betekenis van een spreekwoord wordt gevraagd. Zo is 

iemand met een hart van goud heel erg rijk (groep 5) en 

als je over de rooie gaat, ga je als eerste over de finish! Wat 

betekent ‘het zonnetje in huis’? Groep 4: “logisch toch? 

Dat het héél warm is!” 


Nederlandse School Saigon

In het dagelijks taalgebruik komen de Nederlandse 

spreekwoorden nauwelijks aan bod, waardoor dit 

wekelijkse lesmoment heel leerzaam is. Bovendien maken 

de leerlingen bij elk spreekwoord met veel plezier een 

tekening, waardoor de betekenis beter wordt onthouden. 

Tijdens de les gehoord 

Groep 2 leert bloemennamen. Samuel is een beetje in de 

war: “roos, zonnebloem, vergeet-piet?!” (vergeet-me-nietje) 

Waar wordt brood van gemaakt? Imke in groep 4 weet het 

antwoord wel: “van hooi toch?” 

In groep 4 worden tegenstellingen behandeld. Wat is het 

tegengestelde van ‘vrienden’? Thijn: “onvrienden”. En wat 

is het tegengestelde van ‘maximaal’? Siena: “mindermaal!” 

Wat is het meervoud van ‘kieuw’? Jonah (groep 6): “kiwi’s”. 

In groep 6: “Makkeraden van elkaar” (kameraden). 

In een les woordomschrijvingen haalt Nicole (groep 

7) het even allemaal door elkaar: “Explositie!” (een 

explosieve expositie?). “Iemand die niet goed in zijn vel 

zit is ongelukkelijk en als personen spioneren, wordt dat 

spionatie genoemd.” 

Roos (groep 8): “Nederland is een decoratisch land.” 

(democratisch).

op de valreep 

Wat is de samenstelling van jullie gezin? Ons gezin 

bestaat uit vier personen. Onze twee zonen Kristian en 

Joris zijn respectievelijk 25 en 23 jaar oud. Vietnam was 

echter de eerste keer dat we zonder de jongens in het 

buitenland wonen. 

Wat wordt de volgende bestemming? 

AU 

Sydney, Australië. 

Wat ga je het meeste missen? Marika gaat haar 

vriendinnen Marijke en Heleen en haar werkzaamheden 

voor de Peerke Donders Foundation het meeste missen. 

Jan Willem zal de Vietnamese keuken missen en zijn 

dagelijkse gesprekken met de taxichauffeur die hem iedere 

dag ophaalde om naar kantoor te gaan. We zullen ook 

onze tuin missen, de hond, het uitzicht en zwembad bij 

Riverside Apartments, eten bij Quan 13, de luxe van alle 

hulp in de huishouding en natuurlijk het Sinterklaasfeest in 

HCMC. 

Wat is jullie meest positieve ervaring met de 

Vietnamese cultuur? Een lunch die twee studentes 

organiseerden op een bankje in het park met 

meegebrachte etenswaren. Een paar bananen, mango’s, 

1 broodje, kokosnootje en water. Verder hadden ze 

twee woordenboeken Vietnamees/Engels en Engels/ 

Vietnamees bij zich die per boek minstens anderhalve 

kilo wogen. Een andere mooie ervaring was een concert 

tijdens de Europese muziekweken waarin Nederlandse en 

Vietnamese musici samenspeelden en een geweldig concert 

ten gehore brachten. 

Wat is jullie favoriete restaurant in HCMC en wat 

bestellen jullie daar meestal? 

We gingen graag naar een Thais restaurantje in de 

binnenstad. Ons favoriete Vietnamese gerecht is toch 

echt de Pho. Vooral die in Pho 24 vonden we altijd lekker. 

Jan Willem at op kantoor elke middag Pho en heeft ook 

een t-shirt met I love Pho (nooit gedragen trouwens). En 

verder naar Quan 13, vlak langs de rivier waar je voor een 

habbekrats een geweldig Vietnamees diner kunt genieten. 

Hebben jullie nog een leuke winkeltip? Hoi An was 

een top winkel-ervaring. Dit keer niet eens alleen voor 

Marika. 

Wat vinden jullie de leukste vakantiebestemming 

in Vietnam? We kunnen niet echt kiezen: Halong Bay, 

Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An en natuurlijk Angkor Wat hoewel 

dat niet in Vietnam is. Maar misschien waren Sapa en 

omgeving waar we enkele dagen gewandeld hebben toch 

wel het leukste. Oke, het is best toeristisch maar het feit 

dat je met de verschillende etnische culturen in aanraking 

komt, met de mensen kunt praten en lachen, hun huizen, 

kinderen en bijzondere manier van leven van dichtbij kunt 

meemaken, vonden we heel bijzonder. 

Welke souveniers hebben jullie nog gekocht de laatste 

paar weken in Vietnam? De laatste dagen werd Marika 

toch wel overvallen door een soort gretigheid om mooie 

dingen mee te willen nemen zoals, schilderijen, lakschalen 

en dienbladen, horloges en tv-series. 

Wat is het leukste feest dat je hier hebt meegemaakt? 

We hebben eigenlijk niet een groot knalfeest of zo meegemaakt 

dat eruit springt. Wel heel gezellige en sfeervolle 

borreltjes, diners, feestjes. De 18-jarige verjaardag van de 

zoon van de huisbaas was een bijzonder gebeuren met 

alleen Vietnamezen en allerlei speciaal eten. We denken 

nog met een bijzonder gevoel in onze maag terug aan 

de zure schilpaddensoep waar JW de kop van kreeg! De 

aankleding en sfeer tijdens TET en rond Kerst in de stad 

vonden we ook wel een feestje om mee te maken. 

Tenslotte: hebben jullie nog enig advies voor de 

achterblijvers? Probeer vooral in contact te komen met 

Vietnamezen. De taal is daarbij een groot probleem, maar 

met een beetje zoeken kom je vanzelf mensen tegen die 

voldoende Engels spreken om er echt mee te kunnen 

communiceren. De ideeën, normen, denkbeelden en 

percepties die ze hebben zijn zeer de moeite waard en de 

Vietnamees spreekt ze over het algemeen ook duidelijk uit. 

En dat is een waardevol iets.

Nederlanders 

De Vietnamese dames Linh Do, Troung Thi Diep 

en Nguyen Anh Nguyet werken al jarenlang als 

huishoudelijke hulp voor Nederlandse gezinnen. 

We vroegen hen naar hun kijk op Nederlanders. 

Wat is je indruk van de Nederlanders? 

Alle dames zijn van mening dat Nederlanders in het 

algemeen vriendelijk en makkelijk in de omgang zijn. En 

erg lang! 

Wat zie je als groot verschil tussen Nederlanders en 

Vietnamezen? 

Diep geeft aan dat Nederlanders veel directer zijn dan 

Vietnamezen; ze zeggen eerder wat ze denken. Linh 

noemt het verschil in eetpatroon als opmerkelijk. In 

Vietnam is een stevige, warme lunch heel belangrijk. Voor 

Nederlanders zijn een paar boterhammen met kaas of ham 

genoeg. “En dat met hun lengte!” Nguyet en Linh vinden 

bovendien dat Nederlanders en Vietnamezen op een 

andere manier met hun kinderen omgaan. In Vietnam zijn 

ouders sneller bezorgd en slapen kinderen heel lang bij hun 

moeder in bed. Nederlandse kinderen worden minder lang 

klein gehouden. Het begint al met het zichzelf aankleden, 

de eigen spullen moeten opruimen en mogen meehelpen 

met koken. 

Wat is onvergetelijk typisch Nederlands voor je? 

Diep noemt zonder twijfel het vieren van de verjaardagen. 

Samen ‘Lang zal ze leven’ zingen en poffertjes bakken! 

Ook de Australische tennisleraar Jason O’Connor is 

inmiddels ‘ervaringsdeskundige’ als het om werken 

en sporten met Nederlanders gaat. 

Hoe lang werk je al samen met Nederlanders? 

Ik geef inmiddels al heel wat jaartjes tennisles aan 

Nederlanders. Eerst in Korea, toen in Singapore en nu al 

weer een jaar of tien in Ho Chi Minh City. 

Wat is je indruk van de Nederlanders? 

Ze komen over als een vrolijke groep mensen die het erg 

naar hun zin heeft in Ho Chi Minh City. 

Wat zie je als groot verschil tussen Australiërs en 

Nederlanders? 

Behalve dat we een andere taal spreken zie ik eigenlijk niet 

zo veel verschil. We zijn beiden levensgenieters en reizigers. 

Overal ter wereld kom je Australiërs en Nederlanders 

tegen. 


Voor Nguyet was het helpen met 

oliebollen bakken onvergetelijk en 

Linh zal de Sinterklaasfeesten met 

dolenthousiaste kinderen en ouders niet snel vergeten. 

Welk advies zou je geven aan een Nederlander die in 

Vietnam komt werken? 

Nguyet adviseert om een steentje bij te dragen in de 

ontwikkeling van Vietnam en Diep raadt aan om vooral 

respect en vertrouwen te tonen aan mensen die thuis 

voor je werken. Dat krijg je dubbel en dwars weer terug. 

Daarnaast geeft Linh aan om, naast te integreren in het 

dagelijkse leven in Vietnam, ook aandacht te blijven 

houden voor de Nederlandse taal en cultuur. 

Welk advies zou je geven aan een Vietnamees die voor 

een Nederlands gezin gaat werken? 

Diep: “Wees eerlijk en toon respect voor elkaar”. Linh: 

“Als je graag iets wilt vragen, wees niet te verlegen. Meestal 

is hetgeen je wilt vragen geen probleem, en anders geven 

ze het wel aan, op een vriendelijke manier.” 

Wat was onvergetelijk typisch Nederlands voor je? 

Nederland zien voetballen tijdens de Europese 

Kampioenschappen vorig jaar. Samen met alle 

Nederlanders (en veel bier) in Bar nummer 5, ik kijk er met 

veel plezier op terug!

Wie ben je en hoe lang heb je in Vietnam gewoond? 

Ik ben Martijn Vermaire en ik heb met veel plezier iets 

langer dan een jaar in Vietnam gewoond. 

Wat wordt de volgende bestemming? Bali, Indonesië. 

Wat ga je het meeste missen? Het hotel en het team dat 

samen met mij het hotel opende. 

Wat is je meest positieve ervaring met de Vietnamese 

cultuur? Mot, hai, ba YOOOOOOO! 

Wat is je meest negatieve ervaring? Weinig eigenlijk, ik 

kan niet direct iets verzinnen. 

Zijn de verwachtingen, die je had toen je naar 

Vietnam kwam, uitgekomen? Meer dan. Het hotel was 

op tijd klaar en ik heb sneller dan verwacht mijn ‘targets’ 

bereikt. Tevens was het reizen hier geweldig! 

Wat is je favoriete restaurant in HCMC? Cay Gon, 

Hem 23/6 Nguyen Huu Canh, p22, Q Binhy Thanh. 

Heerlijke mais uit de wok met babygarnalen en gegrilde 

babymosselen met sesamzaadkoekjes! 

Heb je nog een leuke winkel- of uitgaanstip? Ja, die 

Burton snowboard-kleding (ECHT!!!) op de 2e verdieping 

van Lucky Plaza was top. Maar ook Gaya. Daar kun je echt 

leuk ‘laquerware’ kopen. 

Wat vind je de leukste vakantie-bestemming in 

Vietnam? Ik heb het meest genoten van het strand van 

Mui Ne en ik vond Sapa het mooist. 

Welke souvenirs heb je nog gekocht en waarom en 

voor wie? North Face en Burton, natuurlijk. Maar ook 

veel ‘laquerware’, dat echt mooi is en leuke vormen heeft. 

Ook de uit steen gesneden beeldjes van Vietnamese 

poppetjes zijn super leuk. 

Wat is het leukste feest dat je hebt meegemaakt? Het 

meest heb ik me vermaakt op het openluchtrockconcert 

van RMIT University. Dat was echt geweldig leuk! 

Tenslotte: heb je nog enig advies voor de 

achterblijvers? Reizen! Veel mensen die ik hier tegenkom 

blijven in het weekend in Saigon. Terwijl Mui Ne, Nha 

Trang, Phu Quoc en Vung Tau heel dichtbij zijn en je 

makkelijk een goedkope vlucht of een taxi er naartoe kunt 

nemen.

Wat brengt jullie naar 

Ho Chi Minh City? Lang verhaal, maar uiteindelijk 

werk... wij zouden afgelopen januari in Indonesië beiden 

een NGO gaan leiden, maar helaas ging dat plotseling niet 

door. Gelukkig kwam de kans om voor touroperator ‘Trails 

of Indochina’ als Regionaal Product Manager te werken. 

Nu ontwikkel en manage ik reizen in Laos, Cambodja, 

Thailand, Vietnam, Bali en Myanmar. Het bedrijf richt zich 

uitsluitend of de ‘high end’ reisindustrie. Uitdagende taken 

in verschillende landen! 

Waar woonde je voorheen? Ruim vijf jaar heb ik met 

vrouw en later kind in Cambodja gewoond. Daarvoor 

woonde ik op Bali en Macau. En tussendoor in Breda. 

Hoe lang verwachten jullie te blijven? Wij zijn nu bijna 

vier maanden hier en verwachten te blijven tot er zich een 

goede mogelijkheid voordoet om zelf iets op te zetten of 

totdat de loterij gewonnen wordt... 

Wat mis je het meest uit Nederland? Familie en 

vrienden, maar ook de lange zomerdagen met de 

bijbehorende festivals en drinken uit de kraan! 

Wat mis je niet? Het journaal van 20.00 uur, de treinvertragingen, 

het weer en de prijzen van boodschappen... 

Wat ga je zeker doen in Ho Chi Minh City? Meer 

van de regio en het land zien, Nederlandse lessen volgen 

(Kimty) en een basis leggen voor ons gezin! 

Heb je al een opmerkelijke Vietnamese situatie 

meegemaakt? Naast de dagelijkse communicatieproblemen... 

een aantal interessante ‘encounters’ met 

Vietnamese collega’s en de dagelijkse ‘motorbike’ 

ongelukjes, inclusief het afkopen van politie agenten om 

mijn ‘motorbike’ te redden van inbeslagname.
