Dutch entrepreneurship 

Although our calendar has moved forward already for almost two months, in 

Vietnam the ‘Year of the Cat’ has just begun. After one ‘week of rest’, Vietnam 

will fizz like never before. 

And so does the Dutch community in Vietnam, by revealing a high spirit of 

enterprise, as can be learned from the reports in this Double Dutch edition, 

themed ‘Dutch small- and medium-sized enterprises in Vietnam’. 

In the business section, some of these enterprises will introduce themselves to 

you. In the social section, you can learn about the social dynamics: who is new 

in town and to whom did we say goodbye. A photo gallery reports about the 

Dutch business and social events that were organized in the past months. 

The upcoming official visit of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Willem-Alexander 

and Princess Maxima, in which they are accompanied by a Dutch trade mission, 

surely will offer new opportunities to the Dutch industry. In his column, Joep 

looks ahead at this visit and makes a strong appeal to the Royal Couple. 

And he is not the only one who puts forward a strong appeal in this Double 

Dutch edition. The Dutch Business Association Vietnam (DBAV) mobilizes 

(Dutch) businesses bothe in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, to join their club and 

become active members. The Dutch School Saigon is looking for a (part-time) 

teacher, to be recruited within our Dutch community. Moreover, some of its 

enthusiastic board members will step down at the end of the school year and 

replacements are looked for. 

And, last but not least, also within our own editing board we need to recruit 

new editors: we had to say goodbye to Kristina and will bid farewell to Kirsten 

and Renske soon. We thank all three of them for their valuable contributions 

and for making our ‘Double Dutch team’ a cozy one! 

It is obvious that our community is in motion and a strong appeal is made to 

our ‘Dutch entrepreneurship’!

Dear Dutch and other friends, 

On behalf of the board members of the DBAV we wish you all a healthy, 

happy and successful New Year. 2011 will be the ‘Year of the Cat’ which 

might be a bit confusing for some, since in China it is known as the year of 

the Rabbit. In China the Cat didn’t pass the test to be admitted to the animal 

zodiac… 

According to many experts 2011 will be the year of the truth: “Will the 

economy be strong enough to continue its way up?” 

For us in Vietnam, 2011 will be the year in which: HRH Prince Willem- 

Alexander and HRH Princess Maxima will visit Vietnam, members of the 

DBAV will meet with the Peoples Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, after years 

of growth the number of DBAV members will pass 60 and the Hanoi Chapter 

of DBAV will really take off (after its official establishment in 2010), and the 

monthly Dutch Drinks in Hanoi (every second Thursday) and Ho Chi Minh 

City (every third Thursday) will be continued as usual. We also would like to 

introduce you to our new office manager: Felicia Loudon. 

We of course hope that all those who supported our activities (and are still 

here) will continue to do so: our Corporate Sponsors: Dutch Consulate

vindt een economische missie 

naar Vietnam plaats onder 

leiding van de staatssecretaris van 

Economische Zaken, Landbouw 

en Innovatie, Henk Bleker. 

De focus van deze missie ligt op de 

sectoren agrotechnologie, water- en 

deltatechnologie, maritiem, olie & gas, 

transport en logistiek. 

ZKH Prins van Oranje en HKH 

Prinses Máxima der Nederlanden 

sluiten zich bij onderdelen van 

het programma aan. Daarnaast 

brengt de staatssecretaris van 

Infrastructuur en Milieu, Joop Atsma, 

in het kader van de Nederlands- 

Vietnamese samenwerking op het 

gebied van klimaatadaptatie en 

watermanagement, in dezelfde 

periode een bezoek aan Vietnam. 

Vietnam is één van de snelst 

groeiende economieën van Azië, 

met een groei van 7 procent in 2010. 

Verwacht wordt dat deze trend zich 

voortzet. De economie verandert 

gestaag van een gecentraliseerde 

planeconomie naar een meer 

marktgerichte economie. Door 

nieuwe investeringen en de industriële 

ontwikkeling is er steeds meer 

behoefte aan buitenlandse producten 

en diensten. Daarnaast neemt de 

vraag naar consumentengoederen 

toe door de steeds sterker stijgende

Voorlopig programma 

Het programma begint in Hanoi en 

eindigt in Ho Chi Minh City. Aan de

wordt bezien of het nuttig is 

bezoekprogramma’s te organiseren 

aan andere steden/regio’s waar 

specifieke belangen liggen.

relevante instellingen in de

• activiteiten ter promotie van 

Nederland als aantrekkelijk

Vietnamese en Nederlandse

• bezoeken aan internationale

‘Matchmaking’ en netwerken 

Het realiseren van kansen in Vietnam 

vraagt om kennis van de markt, 

cultuur en organisaties. Een goede 

lokale partner en betrouwbare 

zakenrelaties kunnen hierbij een 

belangrijke rol spelen. Om deze te 

vinden bieden wij u de mogelijkheid 

van individuele matchmaking, waarbij 

aan de hand van uw bedrijfsprofiel en 

specifieke wensen vooraf afspraken 

worden gemaakt met potentiële 

zakenpartners. Dit kunnen mogelijke 

agenten, samenwerkingspartners, 

afnemers of distributeurs zijn.

Nutreco acquired Tomboy Aquafeed JSC 

In October 2010 Nutreco acquired, 

via its aquaculture division 

Skretting, the shares in Tomboy 

Aquafeed JSC in Vietnam. 

Nutreco is a Dutch enterprise, 

headquartered in Amersfoort. The 

only Dutch face is Mattijn Bak 

(controller). He moved to Vietnam 

in September 2010, to face an 

exciting challenge for the company 

and for himself. 

With the acquisition of Tomboy, 

Skretting invested in Vietnam’s fourth 

largest shrimp feed company. It has 

two plants near Ho Chi Min City 

and one in Long An Province and 

employs about 300 staff. Recently 

Tomboy invested in a new plant and 

started producing feed for marine and 

high value fresh water species such 

as tilapia, barramundi, snapper and 

grouper.

On 20 September 2010 the Hanoi 

Chapter of the DBAV was officially 

established with the support 

and at the residence of Mr. Joop 

Scheffers, Dutch Ambassador in 

Hanoi. 

From that time, monthly Dutch 

Drinks have been organized every 

second Thursday of the month. The 

drinks are well attended by a variety 

of Dutch and Dutch related people, 

people with decades of experience 

living in Vietnam, newly arrivals 

visiting for business/ holidays or 

to start up their businesses, people 

working for global companies, very 

small companies, NGO’s, government 

organizations, etc. The drinks are easy 

to attend but hard to get away from 

once you’re there! Besides being very 

cozy, it’s also a useful place to discuss 

any kind of issues that you are facing 

in Vietnam. For sure someone has 

had a similar experience and can give 

you advice! 

Mr. Jan de Groot (director of the 

Dutch School in Hanoi) is the person 

making this all possible every month 

with the support of Ms. Ingrid 

Kersjes of the Dutch Embassy. We 

feel lucky to have such persons, 

because without them there would 

not be any Dutch Drinks in Hanoi! 

Another person that is supporting the

Inclusive education in primary schools 

Maarten de Ruiter (34 years), an 

arts teacher in special education, 

and Marijn Bouwmans (28 years) 

with a nursing background and 

specialized in working with 

children with autism, are both 

volunteering for VSO with partner 

organization Mekong Plus and 

living in the Mekong Delta since 

early 2009. 

“We decided to do volunteering 

development work because we 

wanted to share our knowledge and 

skills where this is really necessary. 

We also wanted to gain experience 

in living and working together with 

local people of a completely different 

culture in a developing country.” 

Goals 

In Vietnam they want to ensure that 

children with disabilities can go to 

mainstream primary schools. No 

more special schools, but education 

for everyone at every mainstream 

school (inclusive education). A nice 

goal, but for teachers it is almost 

impossible to teach children with 

disabilities in addition to all students 

without disabilities. The knowledge 

about disabilities is simply not there. 

Moreover, many children who are 

disabled remain at home and they 

should be going to school just like 

everybody else. The demand for 

knowledge about teaching children 

with disabilities in mainstream schools 

therefore is enormous. 

Harsh conditions 

“I have a lot of knowledge of 

education for children with 

disabilities”, says Maarten. “For 

years I taught children with different 

kinds of disabilities. There are many 

ways to improve teaching and some 

adjustments are required. I am most 

proud of the fact that more and more 

children with disabilities are going 

to school now. Parents have heard 

that schools in their own community 

now are suitable for children with 

disabilities.” 

“My most difficult moment was 

during a visit with a colleague to a 

family in the countryside. This family 

had a child with a disability. After a 

long ride on the back of a motorbike 

through a barren and dry landscape, 

we finally arrived at the small house. 

The shutters and doors were closed 

and there seemed no one home. Still, 

my colleagues decided to knock on 

one of the shutters. After a while two 

young girls opened the door. One girl 

was six and the other three years old. 

They both were wearing hardly any 

clothes. The parents were far away 

at work. When we asked why they 

had closed all the shutters and doors, 

the oldest girl answered: “Because 

we are afraid of the men from the 

neighbourhood.” This is when I 

realized how vulnerable children are, 

and in this case children with a mental 

disability in developing countries. 

Parents have to work hard to earn 

some money and so their children 

are left home alone all day. It was 

heartbreaking to watch.” 

Happy children 

“We see many changes within two 

years time”, says Marijn. This has to 

do with the enthusiasm of our local 

colleagues. We work for Mekong 

Plus which consists of two local 

NGO’s, Anh Duong and Chi Thien 

and they are closely involved with 

the underprivileged people in their 

communities. With much pleasure 

they train teachers in the schools and

parents of children with disabilities. 

As a result, I see happy children with 

disabilities who love school and now 

have the opportunity to learn.“ 

In the beginning it was very difficult 

for the teachers to have children with 

disabilities in their classes. But now, 

after training, advice and exchange 

of ideas, they see that these children 

develop and that gives them a lot of 

satisfaction. “More and more children 

with severe disabilities are going to 

school. Some children have never 

gone to school before, but now they 

join classes with children of their own 

age. The teacher adjusts the lessons 

especially for these children and 

the children also receive additional 

support. “ 

Results 

• at 25 primary schools teachers 

are trained and more confident in 

how to teach children with various 

disabilities; 

• education for children with 

disabilities improved. Each school 

has approximately 10 students with 

disabilities; 

• more and more children with 

disabilities are going to a primary 

school close to their home; 

• many parents have gained 

confidence and knowledge about 

raising children with disabilities. 

Leaving Vietnam 

After two years of great experiences 

in Vietnam, Maarten en Marijn are 

heading back to The Netherlands. 

The local NGO’s will proceed 

with the developed materials and

spread the materials to NGO’s who 

are interested in them to train more 

teachers for children with disabilities.

Hoe lang hebben jullie in Vietnam gewoond? 

Bijna 4 jaar. 

Wat wordt de volgende bestemming? 

Shanghai. 

Wat gaan jullie het meeste missen? 

Het wakker worden met stralen zonneschijn die door 

de gordijnen piepen, de georganiseerde en kleurrijke 

chaos, de bananenbomen in de tuin, het ritje op de 

brommer naar Smartkids en weer terug, lieve vrienden, de 

kneuterigheid van het dorp An Phu. Ook gaan we missen: 

de minivakanties in Mui Ne (Coco Beach for ever!), de 

geweldige zondag brunches in Park Hyatt, het onvervalste 

Franse ‘campingeten’ van Le Jardin, de geweldige 

croissants van Voelker, Pho 24, sushi voor een prikkie, 

onze lieve hulpen, de massages bij Quynh en nog veel, veel 

meer. 

Wat is jullie meest positieve ervaring met de 

Vietnamese cultuur? 

De absolute adoratie van kinderen door Vietnamezen. De 

positieve benadering van al het kleine op twee benen is 

werkelijk hartverwarmend. De openheid waarmee onze 

twee meiden benaderd werden, is geweldig. Soms wat 

overweldigend (al dat geknijp in wangen en billen), maar 

ontroerend. 

Wat is jullie meest negatieve ervaring? 

Onze meest negatieve ervaringen zijn toch wel met 

de ‘autoriteiten’: willekeurig baliepersoneel en andere

onverlaten met strepen op de schouder. De politie spant 

natuurlijk de kroon. Het betalen van koffiegeld en Tet 

bonussen aan lethargische motoragenten met overgewicht 

stemt ons niet erg vrolijk. 

Zijn de verwachtingen die jullie hadden toen jullie 

naar Vietnam kwamen, uitgekomen? 

We hadden weinig concrete voorstellingen van het leven 

in Vietnam. Dit was onze eerste posting, dus waren op alle 

fronten zo groen als gras. Bovendien zijn we in Vietnam 

verdubbeld in ‘headcount’, dus hebben heel wat bij moeten 

leren. Ons leven is in korte tijd volledig veranderd. We 

gingen met open vizier het avontuur aan en hebben intens 

genoten, hard gevloekt en hebben deze vier jaar Vietnam 

ten volle geleefd. Kortom: het is een mooie tijd geweest. 

Wat is jullie favoriete restaurant in HCMC en wat 

bestellen jullie daar meestal? 

Le Jardin (zalm met franse frietjes en profiteroles toe), 

Boathouse (Boathouse Burger met blauwe kaassaus), Park 

Hyatt (prosecco brunch op zondag), Mekong Merchant 

(avocado chicken caesar salad), Tokyo Deli (tuna sashimi)... 

en zo kunnen we nog wel even doorgaan. 

Hebben jullie nog een leuke winkeltip? 

Voor alle shopaholics en marktgekken is Cholon (extra 

deo meenemen) de winkelplek bij uitstek. Verder: l’Usine 

op Dong Khoi voor een westers boetiekgevoel, Blue 

Dragon voor leuke souvenirs, de An Phu Supermarkt voor 

verrassende vondsten (en voor de dwaalbonus, omdat 

alle spullen om de haverklap een nieuwe plek krijgen) en 

natuurlijk de Bazaar voor alle creatieve uitspattingen van 

expats en locals. 

Welke souvenirs hebben jullie nog gekocht de laatste 

paar weken in Vietnam en waarom/voor wie? 

We hebben alleen onszelf verwend met wat extra 

aankopen: een Vietnamese klaptafel met bloemetjes (voor 

onszelf) met houten krukjes voor een habbekrats en 

natuurlijk een happy Boeddha omdat dat natuurlijk nooit 

kwaad kan. 

Tenslotte: hebben jullie nog enig advies voor de 

achterblijvers? 

Alle clichés zijn waar: het is voorbij voordat je er erg in 

hebt. Leef dus met volle teugen en begin de dag met een 

onvervalste Vietnamese lach.

JOEP IN VIETNAM

Geachte prins en prinses, 

Voor Vietnam was 2010 een topjaar. Het land heeft grote sprongen vooruit gemaakt. De 

millenniumdoelen zijn binnen handbereik: het onderwijs verbetert, de kindersterfte neemt 

af en steeds meer mensen hebben toegang tot schoon drinkwater. Maar de uitdagingen 

blijven groot. Vietnam ligt in de frontlinie van klimaatverandering en vooral de arme mensen 

hebben daar onder te lijden. 

“Mijn kinderen willen graag leren, maar ik kan het lesgeld niet betalen”, vertelt 

Bich. Ze is 29 jaar oud en woont in een appartementengebouw aan het Lo Gom 

kanaal in Ho Chi Minhstad. “Ons vorige huis lag ook aan het kanaal. Maar toen 

hadden we geen stromend water, geen elektriciteit en het kanaal was ons toilet.” 

Nu maakt Bich wierrookstokjes. Even verderop spreek ik met meneer Van. Hij 

is een gepensioneerd bouwvakker. Zijn leven is veranderd sinds de Belgische 

Prins Filip in 2003 Vietnam bezocht. “Hij gaf geld voor de bouw van ons 

nieuwe appartementen complex. Dankzij hem hebben wij hier een stabiel leven 

en zijn we elke dag gelukkig.” 

Leven met water 

Hoewel de economie van Ho Chi Minhstad nieuwe hoogtes bereikt, zwoegen 

nog veel mensen in haar schaduw. De razendsnelle verstedelijking gaat 

gepaard met sociale tweedeling. Sociaal kwetsbare groepen leven meestal in 

kwetsbare omgevingen, dichtbij het water. Mevrouw Bich en meneer Van 

vertegenwoordigen deze groep. Samen met nog eens 700.000 mensen wonen 

ze aan de oevers in dit zuidelijke deel van de stad, dat van oudsher de schakel 

vormt met de Mekong-delta. Vaak in moeilijke omstandigheden. Ze zijn arm, mevrouw Bich 

het kanaal overstroomt af en toe, de infrastructuur is gebrekkig en het water is 

zwart van de vervuiling. Dankzij de buitenlandse steun zijn de leefomstandigheden 

van de arme bevolking verbeterd. Naast de betaalbare appartementen werd ook het kanaal verbreed, 

de sloppenwijk gerenoveerd en aangesloten op het waterleidingnetwerk. Het project blijkt een succes. 

Hoewel de eerste stap is gezet om de wijk sociaal-economisch te versterken, blijft de problematiek 

van overstromingen bestaan. 

Jullie komende bezoek aan Vietnam is er vooral op gericht om de economische handelsbetrekkingen 

kracht bij te zetten. Prins Willem-Alexander, gezien Uw achtergrond als waterexpert is het niet 

verwonderlijk dat het water in deze deltastad alle aandacht krijgt. Dat is voor mij een aanleiding om 

U te wijzen op de cruciale rol dat het water speelt in het tegengaan van de sociale tweedeling. Dit 

onderwerp mag niet op de agenda van jullie bezoek ontbreken. 

Klimaatvluchtelingen 

Volgens experts zal de Mekong-delta bij een zeespiegelstijging van een meter voor ruim een derde 

onder water komen te staan. Dat heeft gevolgen voor bijna vijf miljoen inwoners van de delta. 

In combinatie met een toenemend zoetwatertekort brengt het een nieuwe migratiestroom uit de 

Mekong-delta op gang. Het zijn de eerste klimaatvluchtelingen voor Ho Chi Minhstad. De vraag 

is welke bijdrage Nederland kan leveren aan deze verontrustende lokale gevolgen van de globale 

klimaatveranderingen. En als we goed luisteren naar de lokale bevolking, kan Nederland ook nog 

leren van de kennis die voortkomt uit de eeuwenlange Vietnamese watertraditie. 

Mijn verzoek aan jullie is, om tijdens de gesprekken met havenbedrijven, ingenieursbureaus en 

plannenmakers, het onderwerp van water en armoede een prominente plaats geven.

Versterking gezocht

Cultuurmiddag met voorleeswedstrijd 

Hoewel we al weer de Tet-vakantie achter de rug hebben, 

willen we nog even kort terugblikken op het vorige 

kalenderjaar. Op 13 november jongstleden werd een 

succesvolle cultuurmiddag georganiseerd met als thema 

‘kinderboekenweek’, waarbij een voorleeswedstrijd 

onder de ouders werd gehouden en de leerlingen als jury 

optraden. De ouders deden er alles aan om de jury voor 

zich te winnen: met prachtige verhalen en gedichten, 

attributen zoals een taart en een heuse mummievermomming! 

Het was een geweldige middag, waar Theo 

Queis als winnaar uit de bus kwam. Ouders, dank je wel 

voor jullie enthousiaste inzet en Theo, gefeliciteerd! 

Deelnemers aan de voorleeswedstrijd van de cultuurmiddag met 

winnaar Theo Queis in het midden. 

CITO-toetsen 

Na een drukke decembermaand met gezellige vieringen 

van het Sinterklaas- en kerstfeest en na een welverdiende 

kerstvakantie is iedereen in januari weer vol goede moed 

begonnen aan een nieuw semester. Ook in de komende 

periode staat weer veel te gebeuren. In februari zullen 

in alle groepen de verschillende CITO-toetsen worden 

afgenomen, inclusief de eindtoets in groep 8. Daarnaast 

staan er nog twee cultuurdagen gepland, waarvan de eerste 

op zaterdag 5 maart met als thema ‘persoonlijke verzorging 

en gezondheid’. Gelukkig hebben de leerkrachten sinds 

het eind van 2010 versterking gekregen van onze nieuwe 

klassenassistente Michelle Melchers. Ze assisteert tijdens 

het kleuteronderwijs, het woordenschatonderwijs en ook 

tijdens de cultuurdagen. 

Uitzonderlijke uitspraken 

Tijdens de les horen de leerkrachten regelmatig leuke 

uitspraken, zoals bijkt uit het volgende: Siena (groep 5) is 

heel creatief in het bedenken van doe-woorden: “hippelen

en trappelen!” (hinkelen en huppelen). Thijn (groep 5) 

vertelt over zijn opa: ”toen mijn opa nog een vader was, 

want toen was mijn vader nog zijn kind...”. Er wordt over 

gesproken en geconcludeerd dat je altijd het kind van je 

ouders blijft, zelfs als je zelf ook vader of moeder bent 

geworden. In de spellingles schrijft Nicole (groep 8) op dat 

een gelovige godsdienstlijk is. 

Leerkrachten gezocht! 

Het komende jaar staan voor de school grote 

veranderingen op stapel. Helaas moeten we aan het einde 

van het schooljaar afscheid nemen van zowel juf Aletta 

als van juf Bianca. Dit betekent dat er naarstig gezocht 

dient te worden naar vervanging. Het bestuur is hier al 

volop mee bezig. Bij het vinden van vervanging voor Aletta 

wordt het bestuur professioneel ondersteund door de 

Stichting Nederlands Onderwijs in het Buitenland (NOB) 

die de sollicitatieprocedure in Nederland zal uitvoeren. 

Voor vervanging van Bianca zal aanvankelijk gezocht 

worden binnen de Nederlandse gemeenschap in Vietnam. 

Deze vacature is te vinden op het ‘prikbord’ op bladzijde 

22 van deze Double Dutch editie. 

En ook bestuursleden gezocht! 

Daarnaast zijn we dringend op zoek naar versterking 

binnen ons bestuur, daar ook hierbinnen een aantal leden 

helaas af zal treden. Om de continuïteit van de kwaliteit 

van het onderwijs van onze kinderen te waarborgen, 

vragen wij iedereen nadrukkelijk om een bestuursfunctie 

te overwegen. Het is immers van groot belang dat 

onze kinderen bij terugkeer in Nederland goed kunnen 

instromen in het onderwijs. Iedereen met affiniteit voor 

onderwijs kan reageren! Bij interesse of voor vragen kunt

Ons nieuwe zeiljacht, Uno! Ons zeilplan is nog niet zeker, 

maar het vertrekpunt is Langkawi en dan gaan wij de 

‘Indian Ocean’ op. De bestemming wordt nader bepaald. 

Wat gaan jullie het meeste missen? 

Onze vrienden, de buurt, leuke collega’s en de scholen. 

Wij gaan dit jaar ‘home school-en’. 

Wat is je meest positieve ervaring met de Vietnamese 

cultuur? 

De passie en ambitie van de mensen en de loyaliteit die je 

van mensen ervaart als je ze beter leert kennen. 

Wat is je meest negatieve ervaring? 

Eigenlijk geen negative ervaringen, behalve het humeur 

van jongens van de paspoortcontrole aan de grens met 

Cambodja. 

Een behouden vaart 

Zijn de verwachtingen die jullie hadden toen jullie 

naar Vietnam kwamen, uitgekomen? 

Voor zover mogelijk zijn onze verwachtingen over het 

land, de mensen, vrienden en reizen uitgekomen. Alleen 

hadden wij gedacht om langer te blijven, waardoor het een 

intensere ervaring zou zijn geweest. 

Wat vinden jullie de leukste vakantiebestemming in 

Vietnam? 

Halong Bay en dan op een kleine boot. Heel bijzonder 

en bijna een ‘privé tour’ zonder andere mensen tegen te 

komen. Mui Ne om heerlijk te relaxen en ook wat leuke 

dagtochten naar de witte duinen en ‘fairy springs’ te 

maken. 

Welke souveniers hebben jullie nog gekocht de laatste 

paar weken in Vietnam? 

Wij hebben weinig gekocht en juist verkocht, op de boot is 

minder ruimte dan thuis! 

Tenslotte: nog enig advies voor de achterblijvers?

Met wie hebben we het genoegen? 

Dennis Broere (37), Natasha Mees (37), Tessa (4) en 

Barend (2). 

Wie of wat brengt jullie naar Ho Chi Minh City? 

Dennis werkt bij Royal Haskoning, divisie ‘Maritime’. 

Daar worden havens en andere maritieme constructies 

ontworpen. In een ontwikkelend land als Vietnam en de 

omliggende regio is nog heel veel te doen op dit gebied. 

Hoe lang zijn jullie hier al en hoe lang verwachten 

jullie te blijven? 

Wij zijn hier in oktober 2010 gekomen. Het plan is om hier 

circa 2 jaar te blijven. In april gaan we nog even terug naar 

Nederland om ons 3e kind ter wereld te laten komen. 

Waar woonden jullie voorheen? 

In Berkel en Rodenrijs, onder de rook van Rotterdam. 

Wat verwachten jullie van je verblijf in Vietnam? 

Op een druk moment in ons leven verwachten we hier 

werk, privé en mooie dingen van de wereld te zien, te 

kunnen combineren. 

Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? 

De eerste ervaringen zijn positief. We hebben een goede 

start gehad hier, mede dankzij hulp van bekenden die hier 

al waren. De mensen zijn vriendelijk en (bijna) alles is 

hier verkrijgbaar, al moet je natuurlijk wel weten waar te 

zoeken.

Wat missen jullie het meest uit Nederland? 

Familie en vrienden natuurlijk. En als echte wintersport 

liefhebbers toch ook wel een beetje de kou en sneeuw ;). 

Wat missen jullie niet? 

Op zich weinig. Dingen zijn hier anders, niet 

noodzakelijkerwijs beter of slechter. 

Wat hebben jullie nog extra ingekocht voordat jullie 

naar Vietnam gingen verhuizen? 

‘The usual suspects’: Calvé pindakaas, hagelslag en 

ontbijtkoek. 

Welk item in je container zouden jullie zeker niet 

willen missen? 

Onze eigen muziek en boeken. Voor de kinderen 

typische Nederlandse DVD’s en knutselmateriaal (verf, 

papierstroken etc.) 

Hebben jullie al een “Opmerkelijke Vietnamese 

anekdote/absurde situatie/uitspraak”? 

Je kunt heerlijk langs elkaar heen kletsen met de 

Vietnamezen. Een mooi voorbeeld van een verwarrende 

situatie waarin niets is wat het lijkt is het Khach San Xanh 

hotel in Cua Lo. Xanh betekent zowel blauw als groen. 

Bij aankomst staat er in sierlijke letters op het hotel ‘The 

Green Hotel’, en de kleur van het hele gebouw… blauw…

Pepijn en Simone 

Met wie hebben we het genoegen? 

Pepijn van der Meer (33) en Simone Bleumink (28). 

Wat brengt jullie naar Ho Chi Minh City? 

We speelden al langer met de gedachte een tijdje te wonen 

en werken in het buitenland. In december 2009 waren 

we hier op vakantie en hebben we Willemien en Joep, 

vrienden uit NL die hier wonen, op gezocht. Geïnspireerd 

door hun leven hier hebben we besloten onze banen op 

te zeggen en hier te komen wonen. Sinds augustus 2010 

zijn we hier in HCMC en hebben we onze eigen ontwerp 

studio, PSdesign.asia, opgezet. 

Waar woonden jullie voorheen? Amsterdam. 

Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? 

Erg leuk. We genieten volop: van de vrijheid van het toren 

op onze brommers, de geweldige stad, de prachtige natuur 

op andere plekken in Vietnam, de zwoele avonden, lekker 

etentjes en leuke mensen ontmoeten. 

Wat missen jullie het meest uit Nederland? 

Vrienden, familie en cultuur. We zijn hier nu een paar keer 

naar het theater geweest, maar het haalt bij lange na niet 

het niveau van onze Nederlandse cultuur. In Amsterdam 

gingen we met veel regelmaat naar voorstellingen en 

concerten. Jammer dat er in deze miljoenen stad zo weinig 

aanbod is.

Wat missen jullie niet? Onze overvolle agenda. 

Wat hebben jullie meegenomen naar Vietnam dat je 

zeker niet zou kunnen missen? 

Ons paspoort! 

Wat gaan jullie zeker doen tijdens je verblijf in 

Ho Chi Minh City? 

Onze oldtimer brommers laten opknappen. 

Hebben jullie al een “Opmerkelijke Vietnamese 

situatie meegemaakt?“ 

Simone heeft kennisgemaakt met de Vietnamese Dengue 

mug en moest een week in het ziekenhuis worden 

opgenomen. Het eten in het ziekenhuis is hier stukken 

beter dan in Nederland, ze mocht drie keer per dag een 

driegangen maaltijd bestellen bij een restaurant. Jammer 

alleen dat ze niet mocht eten van wege een darminfectie...

Het bestuur van de Nederlandse School Saigon is op zoek naar een enthousiaste, ervaren en creatieve leerkracht voor 12 uur per week en 

een contractduur van 2 jaar met mogelijkheid tot verlenging (M/V). 

De school biedt primair Nederlands taal- en cultuuronderwijs (NTC richting 1 en 2) aan Nederlandstalige kinderen in de leeftijd van 4 tot 12 

jaar. Het onderwijs wordt groepsgewijs gegeven en richt zich op het aansluiten bij de kerndoelen van het Nederlands onderwijs. De lessen 

vinden ’s middags van 14.45 tot 17.30 uur plaats. Daarnaast worden op vier zaterdagmiddagen per jaar cultuurlessen georganiseerd (totaal 20 

uur cultuuronderwijs). 

Het is voor deze functie niet noodzakelijk om in het bezit te zijn van een diploma Pedagogische Academie (PABO): de leerkracht kan werken 

met een door de inspectie verleende ontheffing onder de onderwijskundige verantwoordelijkheid van de bevoegde leerkracht. Ervaring met 

NTC onderwijs in het buitenland, mogelijk in combinatiegroepen, is een pré. Het is belangrijk dat de leerkracht over een hoge mate van 

zelfstandigheid en flexibiliteit beschikt, goede sociale vaardigheden heeft, goed kan functioneren binnen een klein team, bereid is om zich 

bij te scholen en in te spelen op allerlei ontwikkelingen. Relevante referenties zullen worden nagetrokken.
