High-tech components for hearing aids
Ronald Appel, Head of Engineering at Sonion Vietnam
Sonion is a global leader in the
design and manufacturing of
advanced components for hearing
instruments and high-end audio
headsets. Our product range
includes balanced armature
receivers, miniature microphones
and electromechanical
components such as switches,
volume controls and push buttons.
Sonion is a Scandinavian owned
company, with headquarters in
Denmark and large R&D facilities
in Amsterdam and in Poland.
This year Sonion Vietnam celebrated
its fifth anniversary. In 2005,
Sonion was still an early company
moving production into Vietnam.
Construction was started in the
Saigon Hi-Tech Park, which was
then still a seemingly empty area
with only two other companies and
limited infrastructure, along Highway
1A in District 9. Five years later we
are neighbors to other international
companies such as Intel, Nidec, Jabil
and numerous others.
Product range of Sonion Vietnam
After the initial period of moving
production lines from Poland and
China to Vietnam and ramping-up the
production, Sonion is now employing
around 1500 people, all focused on
supplying our international customers
with high quality components. As
a European company we bring a
European company culture; this is
reflected not only in the Scandinavian
style of the office furniture, but most
of all in an open work environment.
fifth anniversary
in Vietnam
The Vietnamese organization is
supported by five expats, and a
coming and going of Dutch, Danish
and Polish engineers. We promote
initiative, continuous improvement
and personal development actively, by
offering extensive training programs
to our employees. This ranges
from soft skills to production and
improvement related skills, such as
lean manufacturing and six-sigma,
both in Vietnam and overseas.
Operating in Vietnam we rely heavily
on the energy and skills of our
motivated staff. Sonion invested in
the research and development of new
products in the last two years, which
now results in an increased demand
for Sonion products worldwide. We
are facing this in an overheated labor
market, providing a challenge to us
–and others –to attract and maintain
both operators and staff. By providing
an open minded and high tech,
European style work environment
with an Asian touch, Sonion is
well set to grow its production and
engineering activities in Vietnam
further in 2011 and beyond.
