Music GIG REVIEWS For further reviews, visit www.whatsonlive.co.uk Ultravox Symphony Hall, Birmingham To compliment the release of Brilliant earlier this year - the first new album for nearly two decades from messrs Ure, Cann, Currie and Cross - and the release of their similarly titled new single, Ultravox last month played the Midlands to the obvious delight of their fans. Kicking straight off with the new single, they then performed the track New Euro- Midge Ure peans from the Vienna album. The set included such classics as Vienna, Hymn, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and Reap The Wild Wind, as well as seven tracks from the new album. All were greeted with great enthusiasm by the audience - although the band’s interaction with their fans was far less in evidence than during their gigs on previous tours. Closing track Contact seemed a curious choice with which to finish, feeling somewhat out of context with the rest of the more-upbeat selection of songs, but all in all, this was a great night out for loyal fans of Ultravox. Peter Ward ■■■■■ Kelly Clarkson LG Arena, Birmingham “I’ve been in this industry for ten years,” said Grammy-winning Kelly Clarkson on more than one occasion at the LG, the latest stop-off on her Stronger arena tour. While it’s difficult to believe that a decade has flown by since she won the first American Idol in 2002, Clarkson’s polished, powerful vocals, not to mention confident, breezy interaction with her adoring fans, offered plenty of evidence that she is nowadays a highly experienced performer who’s well-accustomed to commanding the stage. There were belting pop ballads aplenty, including Since You’ve Been Gone, Mr Know It All, latest release Catch My Breath and the self-penned Because Of You, while ‘the overcoming of adversity’ was a constant theme of her back-catalogue selection (her Greatest Hits-Chapter One album is out at the end of 2012). Kelly was, however, quick to point out that she embraces many a genre of music, and among cover songs (which included a rather good version of Fun’s We Are Young) even paid tribute to Brummie band Black Sabbath with a rendition of their hit Changes. A country ‘duet’ of Don’t You Wanna Stay was also served up, courtesy of a larger-than-life hologram of Jason Aldean. But the highlight of the night, and returning once again to that all-important Clarkson theme of empowerment, was closing song Stronger, which brought the entire audience to its feet. Claire Lloyd ■■■■■ Katie Melua Symphony Hall, Birmingham Appearing from behind the rich red velvet curtain, a tiny woman dressed in a black flamenco-style outfit walked on stage. The small lady with the big voice then played Piece By Piece, a haunting, touching start to the evening, with just her guitar for company. Katie was then joined by her Secret Symphony string quartet for renditions of If I Were A Sailboat, I’d Love To Kill You and Closest Thing To Crazy. The simplicity of the arrangements and the sweet sound of the strings were sublime. Then, with a band behind her, stand-out tracks The Flood, The Night I Dreamed I Was Awake and Two Left Feet showed off her ability to move from cabaret singer to diva. Once again alone, she closed with audience requests Spiders Web and I Cried For You, and showed yet again why she’s one of the UK’s best selling artists.
