Mussilburgh, Prestounpanis, Dundie, and Monrois, and the maisteris and awnaris <strong>of</strong> the portis <strong>of</strong> Airthe, Alloway,<br />

Torrie, Carribdin, that thay haif ane speciall care and caus diligent attendance be given that no ships, mercheands,<br />

passingeris, nor otheris personis quhatsomevir comeing from the pairts foirsaidis within this kingdome be sufferit to<br />

come ashoir and land in thair boundis, nor no merchandice and goodis to be lossed within the same, till first thay be<br />

cleirlie informed and resolvit that the saidis ships and goodis and all the personis being within the same ar cleine and<br />

without all suspitioun <strong>of</strong> infectioun and seeknes, under all heighest pane, cryme, and <strong>of</strong>fence that they may incurr in<br />

that behalf, and forder under the pane <strong>of</strong> rebellioun, &c., with certificatioun to thame that sall failyie and do in the<br />

contrair that not onlie thay salbe denunceit rebells and putt to the horne, bot salbe otherwayes punist at the<br />

discretioun <strong>of</strong> his Majesties Counsaill. And, quhairas it is understand to the saidis Lordis that sindrie ships comes from<br />

the parts foirsaidis to this kingdome for coall and salt, whilk lykewyse may produce some danger and hasaird if care be<br />

not had thairanent, thairfore to command and charge the awnaris <strong>of</strong> the said coall and salt, as namelie Alexander,<br />

Earle <strong>of</strong> Linlithgow, Sir George Bruce <strong>of</strong> Camok, [blank] Wardlae <strong>of</strong> Torrie, Mr Alexander Hamiltoun <strong>of</strong> Kinglas,<br />

[blank] Shaw <strong>of</strong> Sauquhie, Alexander Bruce, sone to the said Sir George, [blank] that they and everie ane <strong>of</strong> thame haif<br />

ane speciall care with whome they bloke and bargane in that kynd, and afoir they enter in ony kynd <strong>of</strong> conditioun with<br />

thame that thay be fullie certified and assured <strong>of</strong> the estait <strong>of</strong> the saidis ships, yf thair be ony seeknes or suspitioun <strong>of</strong><br />

seeknes within the same, and, if thair be ony seeknes within the saidis ships or in the pairts or ports quhairfra they<br />

lowsed, and that the suffer nane <strong>of</strong> the companie nor equippage <strong>of</strong> the saidis ships to come on land; and, yf they mak<br />

ony bargane with thame for coale or salt, that they caus the coale and salt be delyverit at the ship syde and that nane <strong>of</strong><br />

the caryaris nor no otheris goe aboarde <strong>of</strong> the ships, and they ressave not thair payment quhill it be weele clenged as<br />

they will answeir upoun the contrair at thair perrell"<br />

“Forsamekle as the Kings Majestie is certanelie informed that diverse turbulent and seditious personis ar come, at the<br />

least ar comeing, from the Low Cuntreyis <strong>of</strong> Flanderis to this kingdome <strong>of</strong> Scotland to stirr up tumult and disordour by<br />

false and malicious reports and imbringing and dispersing <strong>of</strong> seditious wreitts and printed pamph[l]etts and bookis:<br />

for preventing <strong>of</strong> the effects <strong>of</strong> quhilks mischeavous courses the Lordis <strong>of</strong> Secreit Counsall ordanis letteris to be direct<br />

chargeing <strong>of</strong>ficiars <strong>of</strong> armeis to pass to the mercat croceis <strong>of</strong> the heid burrowis and sea-portis <strong>of</strong> this kingdome, and<br />

thair be oppin proclamatioun to command and charge all and sindrie magistratis <strong>of</strong> burrowis and townes, customars,<br />

searchers, and others <strong>of</strong>ficiars and ministers <strong>of</strong> his Majesties lawis, that they onnawayes suffer ony ship or ships<br />

comeing from the Low Cuntreyis <strong>of</strong> Flanders sett ony one <strong>of</strong> thair merchands, passingers, equippage, or companie<br />

quhatsomever on land or shoire till first so exact searche be maid by the saids magistrats, searchears and customars,<br />

and others foirsaids whome it apperteneris, as all such letters, wretts, and buiks as salbe fund within the saids shipis<br />

be maid sure, and not sufferit to be dispersit or delyverit to ony persone quhatsomever till first they be presentit to the<br />

Lords <strong>of</strong> Secreit Counsall or such as they sall appoynt to that effect, and that they tak and apprehend all suspect<br />

personis yf onie be fund in the saidis ships, and speciallie such as salbe fund to be imbringaris <strong>of</strong> the saidis wreitts,<br />

buikes, or pamphletts, and præsent thame befoir the saids Lordis <strong>of</strong> Secreit Counsaill, as the saidis magistrats,<br />

customers, searchears, and others foirsaids will answeir upoun there alledgeance at thair heighest charge and perrell."<br />

Calderwood, noting this Proclamation Edinburgh, and A Dispute about Communi-<br />

(vii. 629) observes that it made no mention cating adding that "by the providence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> the titles <strong>of</strong> the books the importation <strong>of</strong> God" these books were safely brought out <strong>of</strong><br />

which was principally dreaded. Among a ship before it was searched, and were "kept<br />

them, he says, were An Epistle to a Christian close" meanwhile for use at the approach <strong>of</strong><br />

Brother An Exhortation to the Kirk <strong>of</strong> the Easter Communion.<br />

“The quhilk day in precsence <strong>of</strong> the Lordis <strong>of</strong> Secreit Counsaill comperit personallie John McNacht, Williame Dick,<br />

and Archibald Tode, bailleis <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, John Byrris, dean <strong>of</strong> gild, and George Sutis, thesaurer <strong>of</strong> the said burgh,<br />

Gilbert Kirkwoode, deacone conveinar, and Mr Johnne Hay, clerk, with some others <strong>of</strong> the counsaill <strong>of</strong> the said burgh,<br />

as commissionaris for the same; and, they being demandit if they had onie thing now to propone and object aganis the<br />

signatour signed be his Majestie in favouris <strong>of</strong> Mr Patrick Drummond <strong>of</strong> the reversioun <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Conservatour<br />

after the decease <strong>of</strong> the present incumbent [ante, p. 615], seing they gate ane copie <strong>of</strong> the signature to be advysed with<br />

and had diverse Counsall dayes appointit unto thame for giveing <strong>of</strong> thair answeir thairanent, they declairit that, seing<br />

it wes his Majesties gracious will and pleasure to mak choise <strong>of</strong> the said Mr Patrik for the <strong>of</strong>fice foirsaid, they, to testifie<br />

thair humble obedience and conformitie to his Majesties will and pleasure, and upoun the confidence they had <strong>of</strong> the<br />

gentleman his sufficiencie for the said charge, and upoun hoip <strong>of</strong> his dewtifull discharge thair<strong>of</strong>, they had nothing to<br />

say aganis the said signature, bot in name <strong>of</strong> the whole Burrowis acquiesced and agreed to his Majesties royall will and<br />

pleasure, and to the expeding <strong>of</strong> the said signature, with this protestatioun alwayes, that the same sould nawayes<br />
