Hoedspruit Plaaswag het onmiddellik al hul
Hulle bakkie het onklaar geraak en daar was
geen sein om iemand in kennis te stel nie.
on illegal traders
THE South African Police Services, in conjunction
with the Department of Economic
Development, Environment and Tourism and
the Limpopo Liquor Board have declared a
war against illegal spaza shops and unlicensed
liquor outlets.
The provincial police spokesperson Brigadier
Hangwani Mulaudzi said the newly
launched operation will see police confiscate
any groceries and liquor found in unregistered
spaza shop and illegal shebeens.
"Working together with the Liquor Board,
the police will seize any amount of liquor
found at an unregistered outlet, or those which
do not comply with the requirements of the
Liquor Act. These illegal shebeen are the hot
spots of all violent and contact crimes and in
squeezing the space for criminals the police
will close all contributing shebeens," he said.
According to Brig Mulaudzi ,the crime trend
in the province has proven that most contact
crimes reported occur when people are from
or at these businesses.
"Many cases of business robberies reported
have pointed to spaza shops, whose legitimacy
cannot be traced. Illegal foreigners as
well have unregistered businesses all over the
province and have become soft targets for
criminals," said Brig Mulaudzi.
A 36-year-old man appeared in Acornhoek
Magistrate Court on charge of sexual assault.
The Somalian suspect is accused of assaulting
a 9-year-old girl who was left in his
care at Acornhoek old complex.
"The suspect was arrested after the mother
realized that her daughter was withdrawing
from people and was acting in a passive
He said of grave concern to the police is that
these illegal foreigners who run illegal businesses
tend to keep substantial amounts of
money at their premises because they do not
have access to bank in the country, making
them vulnerable targets for opportunistic criminals.
He said to date 130 illegal spazas or tuck
shops have been closed all over the province,
a total of 60 illegal liquor outlets have been
forced to close shop, Fifty Seven fridges have
been seized, 106 illegal foreigners arrested
and a total of 484 suspects are behind bars for
various cases ranging from rape to common
assault, with illegal shebeens and unregistered
spaza shops being the prime hot spots.
The suspects will appear in various courts
across the province soon.
"We are not going to compromise the safety
of our residents by accommodating the minority
who live on the wrong side of the law.
All businesses must be registered and obey
the set regulations, failure to do so consider
your days of operation numbers", said the
fuming Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant
General Simon Mpembe.
He added that illegal shebeens sell liquor to
under age youth and that influence the rate of
rapes and robberies which the province has
experienced of late.
Lieutenant Mpho Koli.
The suspect was released on R500 bail and
the case is postponed to August 23 for further
