As we move into the heart of the nominating
season, I thought I would share a little research on
our election history. CVC’s first full year was 1992
so next year will mark our 23 rd year and the club
has five officers. Never has an entire board been
swept out of office during this span and never has
the same board remained intact for a second year
either. It came close only in 2011 and 2012 when
four of the five members returned in the same slot.
But during the other 20 years we usually have had
two or three new faces come on board. Obviously
the fact some board members chose not to run for a
second term has certainly played a major part.
Following four treasurers in the first four years, that
particular office has been the most stable with eight
members serving two consecutive years, including
Mike Crafton 1996-97, Patrick Garrahan 1998-99,
Ed Hokokian 2000-01, Joe Renna 2002-03, Jill
Kroeker Rosen 2004-05, Terri Parks 2006-07,
Debbie Garrison 2008-09 and Judy Capuro 2011-
2012. Only Dave Case holding the office for a
single year in 2010 interrupted the string of twoyear
treasurers.
Six CVC members have served two year terms as
president including Keith Garrison 1996-97, John
Bird 1999-2000, Debbie Garrison 2004-05, Jim
Agar 2007-08, Charlotte Renna 2009-10 and Linda
Laningham in 2011-12. Six people also performed
two consecutive terms as secretary. The first to do
so was Linda Laningham 1997-98, followed by
Dorothy Gregerson 1999-2000, Pam Hansen 2002-
03, Lynne Agar 2006-07 and then Sheryl DeMello
did it twice serving in 2008-09 and again in 2011-
12. It should also be noted Terri Parks completed
Sheryl’s final year in 2012 and is also our secretary
now in 2013.
For whatever the reason, the turnover is heaviest in
the vice-presidential offices of activities and public
relations. Five people have been in charge of public
relations for two straight years starting with Richard
Mullin way back in 1994-95, then came Joyce
Kroeker during 1998-99, Tamanee Krazan in 2000-
01, Julie Sons in 2004-05 and Jan Pflepsen in 2011-
12. But it is our run coordinator or vice president of
activities that has seen just four people complete a
two year stint. The first was Mike Curtis in 1996-
97, then came Skip Severance in 1999-2000, Craig
Hansen held the job in 2002-03 and the last person
to do it was John Johnson in 2007-08.
Four of our CVC family holds the most time on the
board with five years each. Charlotte Renna was
the secretary in 1992 has been president four times
including 1994, 2003 and 2009-2010. Linda
Laningham was the secretary three times including
1997-98 and 2010 as well as president in 2011-12.
Keith Garrison was VP of activities in 1994, 2009
and 2012 and president in 1996-97 and Debbie
Garrison was treasurer three times in 1995, 2008
and 2009 and served as president in 2004 and 2005.
Statistics show that the longer someone has served
on the board, the more likely they stay in CVC.
Ten (10) out of fourteen (14) people with three or
more years on the board are still active. When it
comes to two years of service only eight (8) out of
eighteen (18) are still around, but out of a
staggering twenty-one (21) people that served one
year, just six (6) of those folks are still here. There
have been a total of 53 people that have served
during the lifetime of Central Valley Corvettes and
only 24 individuals are still on the CVC roster.
Curtis & Leroy saw an ad in
the Kentville Advertiser Newspaper in
Kentville, N. C . and bought a mule for
$100.
The farmer agreed to deliver the mule
the next day.
The following morning the farmer drove
up, and said: "Sorry, fellers, I have
some bad news for you, the mule died
last night."
Curtis & Leroy replied; "Well then, just
give us our money back."
The farmer said;”Can’t do that...I went and spent it
already."
They said; "Okay then, just bring us the dead mule."
The farmer asked; "What in the world ya'll gonna do with a
dead mule?"
Curtis said; "We gonn'a raffle him off."
The farmer said; "You can't raffle off a dead mule!"
Leroy said; "We shore can! Heck, we don't hafta tell
nobody he's dead!"
A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Curtis &
Leroy at the Co-Op grocery store and
asked: "Say...what you fellers ever do with that dead
mule?"
Curtis, said; "We raffled him off like we said
we wuz gonn'a do."
Leroy added; "Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two
dollars apiece and made a profit of $898."
The farmer said; "My Lord, didn't anyone complain...?"
Curtis said; "Well, the feller who won was really upset. So we gave him his two
dollars back."
Curtis and Leroy now work for the government.
They're overseeing Harper's investigation of the Senate and the spending scandal.
Two Beggars
put money into the hat of
the beggar holding the cross.
Two beggars are sitting
side by side on a street in
Rome. One is holding a
cross, the other one is
holding the Star of David.
Many people go by, look at
both beggars but only
Eventually the Pope comes by. He stops to watch the throngs of people giving
money to the beggar who holds the cross while none give to
the beggar holding the Star of David.
Finally, the Pope approaches the beggar with the Star of
David and says, "My poor fellow, don't you understand?
This is a Catholic country and this city is the seat of
Catholicism. People aren't going to give you money if you sit
there holding the Star of David, especially when you're
sitting beside a beggar who is holding a cross. In fact, they
would probably give more money to him just out of spite".
The beggar with the Star of David listens politely to the
Pope, smiles, then turns to the beggar with the cross and
says, "Moishe, look who's trying to teach the Goldstein
brothers about marketing!"

About 34 of us met at El Cid in Oakhurst for a delicious lunch. After lunch, we went next door
to Reamers’ for ice cream. Then we went to Bob and Peggy Cook's house. It was a gorgeous day
at the lake, and Bob took us for a great ride on his party barge.
Thank you to the Cooks and all who attended. Dale & Sue

We met early in the morning on August 18 th
and boarded an Orange Belt bus headed for
San Francisco and our
Alaskan Cruise.
Marilyn had made very
nice Bon Voyage
packages for everyone!
We boarded out ship, the
Grand Princess, and
headed for the buffet
lunch. The ship set sail for Alaska at 3:00
p.m. and we stood on the deck as we sailed
under the Bay Bridge.
The first two days were spent at sea. We all
found different things to keep us busy
during the day- bingo, shopping, movies, the
various musical groups and the afternoon
tea.
Our first port of call was Ketchikan. We
went ashore for the excursions and got a
little bit of a shower as we were returning to
the ship.
Our next stop was Juneau, home to the
Mendenhall glacier. We had all day in
Juneau, so after our excursions, we had a
fish and chip lunch in downtown and did a
little shopping.
We weighed anchor at 9:00 at night and
headed for Skagway. Unfortunately, when
we arrived we found gusting winds and a
small ship blocking our entrance. The
captain decided it was too dangerous to try
to slip in to our berth, so we sailed on to the
town of Haines.
Since all of our excursions were in Skagway
and there was no way to get back to them,
they were cancelled. We decided to walk
into town and look around and do a little
shopping, before returning to the ship.
The next day was spent at sea. We were
able to get past Sawyer Island and pretty
close to Sawyer glacier. The Captain said he
had never seen so much ice floating in the
water. We did get some really nice pictures
of the glacier and surrounds.
Our final port of call was Victoria. Most of
us went ashore and took different
excursions.
Too soon our visit to this lovely city was
over and we headed for San Francisco. With
two days at sea, we needed to find some
things to do. The ladies found some
dominoes and played Mexican Train. There

were a couple of very funny comedians, a
show that consisted of dancing and singing,
a couple of talent shows, and of course lots
of food.
We had some nice travelling companions.
The Garrisons were joined by Tom and
Ladine (cousins) and Skip and Vicky
brought their friends Lee and Pat..
Mike and C.J. Curtis met us at the ship and
dined with the group in the evenings. Some
of you might remember Glenn and Helene
Blue. They came with us on the bus from
Fresno along with Helene’s sister, Piroette
and her daughter Monique.
It was nice to discover Bob and Louise
Ethington were on the ship with us. They
had dinner at a table next to us each night. f.
They participated in the “boat building
contest” and their little boat “The Princess
of Whales” took First place!
The Orange Belt bus met us at the dock in
San Francisco and brought us safely home.
We had a great trip, but were happy to get
back home.
