opportunities: 

News Analyst for new online magazine 

Dancing Giraffe is a new online magazine for people 

with disabilities and their families/carers. They seek 

a volunteer with broadband access to support the 

editor with the analysis of regular news feeds to inform 

articles and information provided by the magazine. 

Gardener needed for local Scout camp 

Prances Scout Camp in Wickham Bishops are looking 

for volunteer gardeners to help with the maintenance 

of the site - mowing, weeding and trimming hedge etc. 

They are also looking to develop the site further. Green 

fingered volunteers are welcome to share ideas! 

Volunteers to support and promote EGM 

Essex Gay are looking for volunteers to be drop in 

hosts at regular sessions supporting gay people in 

the community. They are also looking for people who 

can help with media relations and promotion or attend 

events to represent the organisation. 

Puppy Parents and Foster Homes 

Canine Partners need volunteers to be puppy parents 

and train assistance dogs to help the disabled. You 

should be at home for most of the day and have a safe 

and secure garden. Training takes place at Writtle 

College, so transport is needed. Alternatively, foster 

homes are sought for animals - for short periods. 

Train as a First Aider 

The British Red Cross are looking for volunteers to 

become Event First Aiders. Once trained volunteers 

will provide emergency first aid at community events 

such as concerts and football games or be on hand to 

help to provide support at major emergencies. 

Maldon is blessed with numerous voluntary 

groups, charities and clubs. Maldon and District 

Community Voluntary Service is a registered charity 

that provides support to many of these groups and they 

have provided Maldon Life with details of some of the 

local organisations that provide services and activities, 

working on the premise that - if you do not know 

who to contact, you can’t join! 

We felt it might be helpful to publish the list (see column 

on the right), with contact numbers as supplied by the 

CVS and we plan to do so from time to time - updated 

as necessary. This is just a snapshot - there are other 

clubs and we are happy to include them in future.

Tool Box Project 

The Tool Box project in Maldon 

desperately needs wood so that 

they can continue to make small 

boxes for the charity Tools With 

A Mission. These boxes are filled 

with sets of sockets which are sent 

out to Africa as part of the tool kits 

donated to help train young men 

and women so that they can learn 

a trade and earn enough money to 

feed and educate their families. 

Rev Jo Stark, co-ordinator of the 

project said, “We want to make 40 

boxes a month but we’ve run out 

of wood. We need scrap 6mm ply, 

10mm plank and 15mm plank which 

we can cut down into 35cm lengths. 

I’m hoping that carpenters or timber 

yards will be willing to let us have 

their scrap.”

Rock Choir 

I wanted to get in touch to tell you 

that Rock Choir started officially in 

Braintree, Witham and Colchester 

this week. We had over 80 people 

in the room at Colchester all making 

a great sound and all determined to 

start the year 2012 on a high! 

Rock Choir is a great opportunity 

for people in the local community 

to join together to have a sing and 

also get fantastic opportunities 

for great performances! It doesn’t 

matter whether your voice has been 

confined to the car for years or 

whether you are a Choir regular all

Outside Gyms 

I have just read article about 

outside gyms by Tina Vale. I use the 

outside gym regularly at Tolleshunt 

D’Arcy. I have phoned the Council 

twice since November regards 

the plastic seats on some of the 

equipment, that are breaking up. 

I was using the gym yesterday 

Friday 13th Jan and the seats have 

not been seen to. The first time I 

phoned the council I was told it was 

going to be looked into, then I was 

told the same the second time I 

phoned in December.

The responsibility of the Outside 

Gym at Tolleshunt D’Arcy was 

signed over to Tolleshunt D’Arcy 

Parish Council in August 2011 

and therefore they have been 

overseeing this equipment. 

There is a five year warranty 

on the equipment provided by 

Lappset Playworld the company 

that installed the equipment which 

expires in 2015. Lappset Playworld 

will be undertaking their inspection 

this month and then again in April. 

All the broken seats will be replaced 

this month by Lappset Playworld.

The Rotary Club of 

Maldon - Annual 

Mammoth Book Sale

For the 6th year running, The Rotary 

Club of Maldon in conjunction with the 

local branch of the NSPCC is holding 

their annual Mammoth Book Sale. 

The NSPCC Is a charity dedicated 

to helping abused and neglected 

children which even in today’s society 

is, unfortunately, extremely necessary. 

The Book Sale is to be held at The 

Plume School, Fambridge Road, 

Maldon on Thursday 16th, Friday 

17th, Saturday 18th Feb from 10am 

until 4pm. and also on Sunday 20th. 

Feb from 10am to 2pm. 

The entrance to Plume School is on 

the left hand side of Fambridge Road 

to the rear of “Upper Plume” and 

there is an extremely large free car 

park available for the use of those 

attending the book sale which is easily 

accessible. 

As in previous years the sale will 

contain approximately 17000 books 

which equates to approx 7 tons in 

weight. These books cover almost 

every subject under the sun, fiction, 

non fiction, sports, pass times, 

hobbies, travel, English literature and 

also many children’s books, if you can 

think of a subject there is a strong 

possibility it can be found at this “Book 

Sale”. Most of these books are good 

quality second hand but there are 

many brand new and all are in good 

condition, we even have complete 

boxed sets. 

The Rotary Club will ensure the book 

sale is well signposted on all roads 

into Maldon and within Maldon itself, 

making the large Plume School car 

park easy to find. 

The President and members of The 

Rotary Club of Maldon are proud to 

have been chosen by the NSPCC yet 

again and we are sure the residents of 

Maldon and the surrounding area will, 

as they do at all our Rotary events, 

dig deeply into their pockets to help 

raise a large sum of money to help 

these dedicated and caring people in 

their work to help these children. 

We look forward to seeing you on one 

or more of the days of the book sale 

at The Plume School. We have a 

limited supply of carrier bags so if it’s 

possible for you to bring your own it 

will be appreciated.

We have teamed up with the Essex Legacy 

Team at Essex County Council to bring you 

a series of guided walks called “Walk your 

Way to London 2012”. 

Each walk has been allocated one of the colours of the 

Olympic Rings and everyone who completes a walk will

The Annual Women’s 

World Day of Prayer

Whiplash

This month we are going to look at the increasingly 

contentious and costly subject of Whiplash. A huge 

industry has developed around it, particularly in 

certain quarters of the medical and legal professions 

where diagnosis and the encouragement to pursue 

compensation are often very questionable. 

Claims for whiplash injuries have reached epidemic 

proportions. A recent parliamentary committee 

highlighted a 70% rise in motor insurance injury 

claims in the last six years. This is in spite of a 23% 

drop in the number of casualties caused by road 

accidents. Whiplash, in turn, accounted for 70% of 

all these injury claims (in France it’s only 5%). This 

amounts to roughly 554,000 whiplash claims in 

2010-11. In 2001 this was estimated to cost around 

£1,000,000,000, in 2010-2011 this figure has doubled. 

What is whiplash? Whiplash is a nonmedical term 

used to describe neck pain following an injury to the 

soft tissues of your neck (specifically ligaments, joints, 

muscles and tendons). It is caused by a sudden force 

applied to the body that causes movement beyond 

the neck’s normal range of motion. 

Whiplash can occur in any incident that causes as 

sudden jerk to the neck, particularly motor vehicle 

accidents, sporting activities and accidental falls. 

The term whiplash was first used in 1928, and 

had previously been described as “Railway Spine” 

as most of the occurrences of this injury before 

this date were in train accidents. Despite the 

replacement of the term “Whiplash” by other terms 

such as acceleration flexion-extension neck injury 

and cervical hyperextension injury, it continues to 

be used as a simple way to describe this condition. 

Your doctor may use more specific terms of cervical 

sprain, strain or hyperextension injury. Fortunately, 

Whiplash is typically not a life threatening injury, but 

it can lead to a prolonged period of partial disability.

What causes Whiplash? Whiplash is most 

commonly caused by a motor vehicle accident in 

which the car the person is riding in is stationary, 

and is struck by a vehicle from behind. It is 

commonly thought the rear impact causes the 

neck to be forced into hyperextension (backward 

bending) as the seat pushes the person’s body 

forward, the head and neck then recoil and are 

thrown into a hyperflexed (forward bent) position. 

Studies using high-speed cameras and crash-test 

dummies have determined that the lower cervical 

vertebrae are forced into a position of hyperextension 

compressing the joints, while the upper cervical 

vertebrae are in a hyperflexed position causing the 

joints to be forced open, straining the tissue. It is 

thought that this motion damages the soft tissues 

that hold the vertebrae together. 

Whiplash Symptoms: The symptoms of Whiplash 

can vary from a mild achy stiffness that resolves 

within a few days to long term debilitating pain. 

Some of the common symptoms experienced with 

Whiplash are as follows. 

• Headaches/Migraines, 

• Neck pain and stiffness, 

• Dizziness, 

• Nausea & Vomiting, 

• Problems thinking 

or remembering, 

• Numbness & tingling 

(arms, face & shoulders), 

• Jaw pain, 

• Diffuse back pain, 

• Visual Disturbances. 

How is it treated? Often the initial treatment for 

whiplash has been a soft cervical collar. The goal 

of the collar is to reduce the range of motion of the 

neck to prevent any additional injuries. This should 

only be a short term precaution as recent studies 

have shown that prolonged immobilization slows the 

healing process. 

The restriction of motion causes increased pain 

and stiffness. Immobilization also causes muscle 

wasting and reduced blood flow to the damaged 

muscles. 

In the first instance the goal should be to reduce 

inflammation and pain by applying a cold compress. 

As soon as symptoms will allow gradually 

encourage some gentle movement. Stretching, 

mobilisation and massage techniques used by 

Osteopaths promote healing and recovery. 

Recovery times vary from a few days to several 

months depending on the severity of the injury 

and your own medical history. Your Osteopath will 

constantly monitor progress and refer on for further 

scans and tests if they become necessary. 

Whiplash is Preventable! When adjusted properly, 

head restraints can be very effective in preventing 

whiplash injuries. Make 

sure that when buying 

that you select a vehicle 

with an appropriate head 

rest, and ensure that 

every time you get into 

a vehicle, as a driver 

or passenger, that you 

adjust the headrest properly. Adjust the headrest so 

that the top middle part of the headrest is level with 

the height of your eyes.

A Statement of SEN is invaluable for many parents as the Local Authority 

will have a legal duty to ensure that the provision included in Part 3 is 

put in place. If the provision is not put in place then parents can talk to a 

solicitor about a potential legal remedy that they may be able to pursue. 

However, this may not be recommended if the statement is not written well, 

as it would be difficult to prove that the provision is not being provided. 

Therefore the value of a statement will depend on how well it is written. 

For a statement to be written well, the provision in Part 3 should specify 

and quantify the provision the child will receive. If parents are concerned 

whether or not their child’s statement is written well, they should contact 

a solicitor who can advise whether or not it is well written and how to try 

and improve poorly written statements. 

Parents, whose children are due to transfer to secondary school 

in September 2012, should be issued a final amended statement 

by 15 February 2012. It is easier to try and amend a statement 

within 2 months of its issue and we therefore recommend that these 

parents seek advice regarding the contents of their child’s statement 

immediately upon receipt of this.

Valentine’s Day... Leap Year! 

Will she be proposing? 

Leap Year is the traditional time that women can propose 

in many of today’s cultures, it is okay 

for a woman to propose marriage to 

a man. Society doesn’t look down on 

such women. However, that hasn’t 

always been the case. 

When the rules of courtship were stricter, women 

were only allowed to pop the question on one day 

every four years. That day was February 29th. 

St. bridget’s Complaint 

It is believed this tradition was started in 5th 

century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to 

St. Patrick about women having to wait for so 

long for a man to propose. According to legend, 

St. Patrick said the yearning females could 

propose on this one day in February during the 

leap year. 

February 29th in English Law 

According to English law, February 29th was 

ignored and had no legal status. Folks assumed 

that traditions would also have no status on that 

day. It was also reasoned that since the leap 

year day existed to fix a problem in the calendar, 

it could also be used to fix an old and unjust 

custom that only let men propose marriage. 

The first documentation of this practice dates 

back to 1288, when Scotland supposedly passed 

a law that allowed women to propose marriage 

to the man of their choice in that year. Tradition 

states they also made it law that any man who 

declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a 

fine. The fine could range from a kiss to payment 

for a silk dress or a pair of gloves. 

Sadie Hawkins Day 

In the United States, some people have referred 

to the first Saturday in November as Sadie 

Hawkins Day with women being given the right 

to run after unmarried men to propose. Sadie 

Hawkins was a female character in the Al Capp 

comic strip Li’l Abner. Many communities prefer 

to celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day in November 

because Al Capp first mentioned Sadie Hawkins 

Day on November 15, 1937.

program Essex Girls. Owner Georgina wanted to achieve a salon where 

all treatments are done in one place, rather than racing around going to 

different salons. Essex Gurls is very warm and relaxing and very PINK, with

Georgina offers the Micro Ring hair extension method, which she has been 

doing for over two years and built a good reputation and a large client base.

Gardening LIFE By Christine Robson 

The Catkin – a true harbinger of 

spring and in this case the dainty 

yellow lambs tails are on a Corylus 

avellana contorta. 

I think the beauty of this contorted 

hazel appears during the Winter 

and Spring months before the 

leaves appear, which I think are 

singularly unattractive. 

It looks very effective in the 

wintertime when its bare contorted 

branches are shown against a 

plain dark background – see the 

photograph. The twisted stems 

are often used by flower arrangers 

especially in Japanese type 

minimalist arrangements. Come 

and see me if you need any, I am 

always pruning it. 

If you have any of these shrubs/ 

trees you must remove any 

straight stems that appear. If you 

don’t the whole tree may revert to 

its original uncontorted shape. The 

same rule applies to variegated 

shrubs. Remove at ground level, 

any plain leaved stems that 

appear. 

In early February there is not a 

huge amount of work to do in the 

garden, but you can watch the 

birds and feed them. I am very 

aware of when the birds don’t 

require additional feeding as 

they never visit my garden at all 

when natural food in the wild is 

available. 

Last year I had very few visitors to 

my feeders from September to the 

end of December, because of the 

availability of seeds and berries 

last Autumn time. If you would 

like to have a bird friendly garden 

avoid cutting all hedges and large 

shrubs until the end of June. When 

you place your feeders make sure 

that they are a few metres away 

from a hedge or fence. You know 

why. Sorry cat lovers! 

Birds like clean water for 

bathing and drinking. Last 

summer I had two ducks 

visit my garden for many 

weeks. Their wide but 

shallow water container 

was also used by collared 

doves. Unfortunately the 

ducks made the water 

extremely dirty which meant 

frequent changing, and I 

had to buy special food for 

them! They used to fly, or 

walk in, up my driveway 

and ‘quack’ at my window 

until there was a suitable 

reaction from me. I believe 

other gardens had visits 

from ducks as well. Maybe 

some small ponds dried up 

last summer? 

I often read articles in 

magazines about birds, 

and one I read recently mentioned 

supplements for birds. Really? 

Yes, bird food is available with 

added vitamins!

Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare (SESAW) is a registered charity devoted to the welfare of needy animals. A variety of animals 

pass through their doors - many are abandoned, some are victims of accidents, most need a home. Volunteers devote hours

Zoo News latest from Colchester Zoo 

Female Goeldi’s monkey Hazel 

gave birth on 29th December 2011! 

The youngster was fathered by 

male, Willow who was born in June 

2006. Hazel arrived in December 

2010 from Barcelona on an EEP 

recommendation to form what has 

proven to be a successful breeding 

pair with Willow. 

The new born is yet to be sexed and 

named, but is doing well and being 

cared for closely by its parents. The 

family can be seen in the Worlds 

Apart exhibit, though it is quite 

difficult to see the youngster as it 

blends into the hair of its parents! 

The Goeldi’s monkey is listed as 

vulnerable on the IUCN Red List 

and with its main threat of habitat 

loss affecting the population, there 

is reason to believe that the species 

will face a decline by at least 30% 

over the coming 18 years. 

Colchester Zoo recently played 

host to a team from the Royal 

Veterinary College who are 

studying how rhinos, one of the 

heaviest land mammals, carry their 

weight on such small feet. 

As the keepers have such a good 

relationship with the resident rhinos, 

they were able to assist by training 

rhinos to walk across a hi-tech track 

packed with sensors to measure the 

pressure and forces. This helped 

the team gather information. The 

team were not only interested to 

find out how rhinos carried their 

weight but also in comparing how 

elephants distribute their weight, as 

preliminary results showed there 

was a difference. This may be due 

to their feet being quite different in 

regard to the amount of toes they 

have. 

The RVC team commented that by 

having a clear understanding of how 

rhinos carry their weight, there could 

be inspiration to be able to build 

devices that can handle heavy loads 

whilst moving.

Mersea Apples The mystery solved! 

Last month, a Mersea reader provided a photo of 11 dessert apples - the mystery being 

what they were and where they had come from! They had red flesh, shiny red peel and 

were delicious! Well, we received a call from Linda - of Seaview 

Avenue, Mersea to say that the apples came from a tree in her 

garden which had been fully laden with the fruit this year. Linda 

‘inherited’ the tree when she moved in to the property and her 

only clue to the type of apple comes from the internet which 

suggests that the names Pink Pearl or Rosetta could apply. 


Preparation 

Basic pancakes 

with sugar and 

lemon 

Ingredients 

For the pancake mixture: 

To serve: 

• 110g/4oz plain flour, sifted 

• Caster sugar 

• Pnch of salt 

• Lemon juice 

• 2 eggs 

• Lemon wedges 

• 200ml/7fl oz milk & 75ml/3fl oz water 

• 50g/2oz butter 

Sift flour and salt into a bowl with a sieve held high, so the flour gets an airing. Make a well in the centre and 

break in the eggs. Begin whisking - incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl. 

Gradually add small quantities of the milk and water, still whisking (don’t worry about lumps as they will 

disappear as you whisk). When all the liquid has been added, use a rubber spatula to scrape any bits of flour 

from the edge into the centre and whisk again until the batter is smooth, with consistency of thin cream. Melt 

the butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to 

lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake. 

Get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you’re 

using the correct amount of batter. 2 tbsp is about right. It’s also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it 

can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to 

get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with 

a palette knife to see if it’s tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife - the 

other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate. 

Stack the pancakes between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate over simmering water, to keep them warm. 

To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half 

again to form triangles, or simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra 

sections of lemon. 

Spinach & Ricotta 

Pancakes 

Ingredients: 

• 1 large onion - halved & sliced 

• Butter 

• 1 garlic clove - crushed 

• 1 bag spinach - 250g, washed 

• 1 x 250g tub Ricotta 

• 1 lemon - zested 

• 50g Parmesan* - grated 

• 8 pancakes (not sweet ones) 

• 350g jar quality tomato pasta sauce 

Method: 

Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Cook 

the onions in a knob of butter in a large 

pan, until soft, caramelised and dark 

golden. Add garlic and spinach and cook 

until spinach is completely wilted. Cool. 

Mix in Ricotta, lemon zest and half the 

Parmesan and season. Divide between 8 

pancakes and roll each one up to make 

an evenly-filled tube. 

Spread 1/3 of the sauce on the bottom 

of a baking dish. Sit the pancakes side 

by side in the dish (like cannelloni). Pour 

the rest of the sauce over. Sprinkle over 

the rest of the Parmesan. Bake for 25-30 

minutes until bubbling and golden. 

Approx. Per serving: 506 kcalories, protein 

22.6g, carbohydrate 58.7g, fat 21.7 g, 

saturated fat 11.1g, fibre 4.5g, salt 2.59 g

Lord Ashdown came to the Museum to carry out research for a new book 

he is writing on the Cockleshell Heroes raid, he viewed the Cockleshell 

archive and had a good look at our Cockle Canoe during his visit. As a 

consequence of his visit Lord Ashdown has been in contact with both the 

Victoria and Albert Museum and the Imperial War Museum, to organise 

specialist conservators using the latest hi tech equipment to authenticate 

our canoe as being Catchelot, the only surviving canoe from the raid. 

The Museum has recently also had the privilege of working with Dr Sonia 

O’Connor from Bradford University and Natham Bailey from 3DX-RAY 

who’s company very kindly donated the use of their specialist equipment 

and his time to assist with the ongoing research. 

Lord Ashdown’s contacts have given invaluable help to the Museum’s 

research programme and through his good offices we have made some 

very useful contacts for the future development of the Museum. 

We were delighted when he accepted our offer to become Patron of the 

Museum and are looking forward to an interesting and fruitful relationship 

in the future. In his acceptance letter Lord Ashdown specifically recognises 

the high standards that the Museum has attained in both the display of 

artefacts and the facilities offered to serious researchers and the general

Maldon & District 

Vision Impaired Club 

Maldon & District Vision Impaired Club is a small social club for people 

with varying degrees of visual impairment living in the Maldon area. Our 

members are older but all are young at heart. 

We meet twice a month in the WRVS Hall, Mill Road in Maldon where we 

enjoy a varied programme of entertainment, speakers, quiz etc. We also 

have two or three outings during the year. The cup of tea and a chance 

to chat to other folks is an important part of the afternoon. Transport is 

provided by Maldon District (Viking) Community Transport – subject to 

availability. Members are encouraged to belong to the Community Transport 

Scheme – currently £7.50 per annum. If you or a friend are interested

Friends, and on Tuesday 22nd 

November at the evening meeting held at The Queens Head 

on The Hythe, Brian Olley was presented with a cheque for five 

hundred pounds to help boost the funding for the Friends. 

He thanked the members of the club for their valued contribution. 

Brian is Chairman of the group and will continue in this capacity 

as he done for over twenty years and said that he is delighted 

to receive such valued support. Alan Smith has been appointed 

Secretary and this years Rotary Club President Tony Newton is 

the Treasurer. Brian gave Matron Juliet Hunt at the Hospital one 

hundred pounds to be used for the benefit of the patients in the 

St Peter’s Ward at Christmas time and confirmed that Friends 

had found some new friends to help with future hospital needs for 

the benefit of Out Patients and In Patients. 

Over the years The Friends have donated many thousands of 

pounds and will continue to offer support where possible.
