PERSONA 60<br />

He saw himself more as <strong>the</strong> capta<strong>in</strong> of a high-tech<br />

company. Or, while obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an advanced degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> Religious Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, perhaps as <strong>the</strong> spiritual<br />

head of a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive, metropolitan parish.<br />

It’s equally unlikely th<strong>at</strong> he pictured himself<br />

married to <strong>the</strong> proverbial farmer’s daughter, us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his sales talents <strong>in</strong> a variety of agricultural bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />

But, alas he and his wife, Paula, a teacher<br />

<strong>at</strong> Harden Middle School, celebr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir 25th<br />

anniversary on June 11th of this year.<br />

Their daughter Emily, who <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> moment works<br />

<strong>in</strong> produce, loves to travel, has <strong>taken</strong> a semester<br />

of courses <strong>at</strong> Oxford, and is plann<strong>in</strong>g to study <strong>in</strong><br />

India. Meanwhile, <strong>the</strong>ir son Allan is now headed for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Navy and will beg<strong>in</strong> his military career study<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Defense Language Institute, after earn<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion earlier this June.<br />

Consider<strong>in</strong>g his lack of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> produce<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry and his vacill<strong>at</strong>ion over whe<strong>the</strong>r or not<br />

to become a priest, Donohue’s decision to marry<br />

and raise a family won <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner b<strong>at</strong>tle ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

due to <strong>the</strong> “<strong>in</strong>delible mark Sal<strong>in</strong>as had made<br />

on his soul” dur<strong>in</strong>g his form<strong>at</strong>ive years. Though<br />

he cont<strong>in</strong>ues to appreci<strong>at</strong>e and enjoy his faith<br />

because he sees it as one of <strong>the</strong> “key elements<br />

to who he is,” somewhere dur<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> process<br />

he also came to understand th<strong>at</strong> “perhaps faith<br />

doesn’t make any sense unless you can live it out<br />

through your daily rout<strong>in</strong>e.”<br />

Donohue credits his wife with hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

“p<strong>at</strong>ience of Job” by allow<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>the</strong> freedom<br />

to pursue his various career <strong>in</strong>terests more or<br />

less <strong>at</strong> will. Th<strong>at</strong> meant he wasn’t home much —<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g he says he would never have done if<br />

“home and children would have suffered by his<br />

many absences.” It also meant th<strong>at</strong> he was able to<br />

conduct his bus<strong>in</strong>ess efforts globally, mak<strong>in</strong>g him<br />

a two-million-mile American Airl<strong>in</strong>e flyer.<br />

It seems th<strong>at</strong> Donohue has been work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong><br />

betterment of Sal<strong>in</strong>as s<strong>in</strong>ce he took <strong>the</strong> helm <strong>at</strong><br />

European Vegetable Specialties. The <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

part is th<strong>at</strong> he did it right. Not by protest or<br />

opposition but r<strong>at</strong>her, through a system<strong>at</strong>ic rise <strong>in</strong><br />

public visibility through his efforts on everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from volunteer<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee for<br />

Rally Sal<strong>in</strong>as, to his political appo<strong>in</strong>tment, and work<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Plann<strong>in</strong>g Commission; as well as particip<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a Director on a veritable plethora of Civic<br />

Boards. Th<strong>at</strong> said, he does have a penchant for<br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> top <strong>in</strong> all of his endeavors; once he set<br />

foot <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> political arena it made perfect sense<br />

th<strong>at</strong> he would eventually arrive <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> p<strong>in</strong>nacle<br />

position of his chosen city.<br />

Sal<strong>in</strong>as has many challenges for its newest Mayor<br />

but he’s up to it and well prepared. Speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

third annual faith luncheon he told <strong>the</strong> audience<br />

th<strong>at</strong> he likened <strong>the</strong> city to <strong>the</strong> story of David and<br />

Goli<strong>at</strong>h, which, <strong>in</strong> this case, means a collection of<br />

gang-rel<strong>at</strong>ed social difficulties. Additionally <strong>the</strong><br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g city is faced with upgrades and changes<br />

unlike any th<strong>at</strong> were faced by previous leaders.<br />

Donohue’s vision is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> title of his<br />

weekly radio broadcast “Imag<strong>in</strong>e a Gre<strong>at</strong> City.”<br />

He is amaz<strong>in</strong>gly approachable to constituents as<br />

long as <strong>the</strong>y are will<strong>in</strong>g to talk through wh<strong>at</strong>ever<br />

problem occupies <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds. If <strong>the</strong>y’re will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

discuss a challenge, it can be solved. When asked<br />

recently if he wants to go to <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e legisl<strong>at</strong>ure<br />

after be<strong>in</strong>g a Mayor, his answer clearly exemplifies<br />

his work<strong>in</strong>g style and enthusiasm for his<br />

current job: “Why should I take a demotion?” °<br />
