10 Spring 2013 Lincoln Consolidated Schools MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATED AT BRICK ELEMENTARY The annual program of remembrance of the life and leadership of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was presented twice in the beautifully restored Brick Auditorium on January 18th by Brick Elementary students from Ms. Curmi’s fourth grade class. The students have studied his life, legacy of non-violence, and leadership in the civil rights movement in America. Each student, on stage, alone at the podium, using a microphone, gave their thoughts and ideas about the impact the life of Dr. King had on all of us. A slideshow photo-biography of the history of Dr. King, his family and short life, set to music, followed the students’ portion of the show. The photos included many of Dr. King himself as he grew up, his beloved family, the famous march on Washington, and many other unknown photos from his remarkable and inspirational life. The music chosen to honor his legacy included ‘”What the World Needs Now is Love” by Dionne Warwick, “We Shall Overcome’’ by Joan Baez, “A Place in the Sun’’ by Stevie Wonder, and ‘’Dream On” by Arrowsmith. Portraits of Dr. King drawn by the students, and picket signs designed by the students provided an appropriate background for the presentation. Each audience member was asked to do an act of service for another person on the official holiday, Monday, January 21st in his memory. Thank you to all who attended, classes, administrators, teachers, families and friends. We hope you took a little piece of his dream of peace and love home with you. Congratulations to the class for a job well done, Dr. King would have been proud! STEM AFTER SCHOOL @ BRICK A TIME OF SHARING Each month, the Lincoln Senior Center and our Brick Elementary friends join together for a “time of sharing.” This program begins in September and runs throughout the school year. There are giggles, smiles, and special times that are shared by all. Over the past few months we have written letters to the Troops and participated in a variety of craft programs including making Christmas cards (that were sold at our fall rummage sale) and paper snowmen. But our favorite activity so far was decorating gingerbread houses with lots of candy goodies. The seniors enjoyed this activity just as much as the students! Nothing is greater than sharing yourself & making memories with children! Students from Bishop, Brick, and Childs Elementary Schools came together for five Tuesdays this fall to continue inquiry-based learning. The program is funded by the Department of Defense through liaison officer Greg Chappelle, and was facilitated by Principal David Northrop and taught by Tech Ed. teacher Carole Ryburg. The program is showcased at The National Center for the Advancement of STEM Education [ http:// nacase.org/]. The fourth graders built bridges that spanned distances and held weight. They examined tension and compression forces. The children also learned tool use and safety. They used hand drills and junior hacksaws to attach dowel rods and cubes, forming towers. Tagboard spanned the towers, forming the deck. Blocks and matchbox cars were the weights used for testing the strength of their designs. The other inquiry involved the catapult. This study explored gravity, height, distance, velocity, and levers. The challenge was to design and build a device that can launch a ping pong ball a distance. The children competed to see who could launch with the greatest accuracy and distance. www.lincolnK12.org
www.lincolnK12.org Lincoln Consolidated Schools LINCOLN THEATRE DEPARTMENT EARNS A “ONE” RATING AT THEATRE COMPETITION DISTRICTS. On Saturday, January 26th, nineteen members of the Lincoln High School Theatre Department competed in the District Competition of the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association’s Theatre Competition. The show was called “Check Please: Take 2.” The plot: Guy and Girl break up and then decide to date again. During the course of the play they get one bad date after another. Some dates are merely annoying, others are just ridiculous. Yet all are hilarious. To the audience that is, because Guy and Girl are just frustrated by these oddballs. The competition results were a “One” rating (which is the highest score), awards for Laura Wynne, Senior (Acting), Corinne Figarra, Junior (Set Painting), Lydia Mejia, Senior (Lobby Display), and the entire cast and crew (ensemble work). The show was performed again on February 2nd at the Mid-Michigan Theatre Festival and competed again at MIFA regionals on February 9th. The next major event from the Theatre Department is the “All School Talent Show” on March 27th at 7:00. The department will be following this with a production of the classic Greek tragedy, “The Women of Troy,” featuring original music and a recreation of the fall of Troy under the Greek assault. This epic production will run from May 16th to 19th in the Lincoln Performing Arts Center. LHS BANDS This winter the band is preparing for important performances including Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association’s Solo and Ensemble Festival in January and Band Festival in March. Along with learning bits of music theory for a better understanding of scales and music, the band has performed at varsity basketball games, the “Class of 2017 Parent Night”, and an eighth grade presentation. There were 88 band students that participated in the MSBOA’s Solo and Ensemble Festival. These students participated in up to three events consisting of solos, duets, trios, quartets, septets, and chamber groups comprising of 52 total events. Out of these events 39 events received a medal, 16 events moved on to the state level of competition, and 78 students received a medal! Congratulations to all the Lincoln HS Band students!
