Spring 2013 Lincoln Consolidated Schools LINCOLN SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM RETURNS IN 2013 Lincoln offers a unique opportunity for your child to learn Spanish in elementary school. Lincoln Consolidated Schools has started an exciting new program to immerse students in the Spanish language while teaching the elementary curriculum. This program started with a single K-1 classroom in September 2012 as part of Bishop Elementary School’s multi-age program. We will add a classroom each year until we have a K-5 program. As the program grows, we will evaluate opportunities to expand Spanish offerings into middle school and high school. Immersion teaches the same curriculum as any other classroom. The primary difference is that the language of instruction is Spanish in this classroom. Specials and assemblies remain English for these students. The Spanish Immersion students are also fully a part of the multi-age Bishop Elementary School and will experience the High/Scope approach to curriculum delivery. One of the significant benefits of this type of program is that children are immersed in a second language when they can learn it naturally. Natural learning is how we learned our native language. It is the easiest way to learn a second language before our brains age, making second language learning more difficult. Students in these programs develop a near native fluency that, when nurtured, can allow bilingualism to flourish. The program has been very successful over the course of the first year with parents giving very positive feedback and very impressed with how rapidly the children have grown to understand Spanish language and respond appropriately. Many parents with children in the program are excited about enrolling their younger children in future years. CENTRALIZED ENROLLMENT With the start of the school year, we implemented a centralized enrollment process for grades K-12 to better serve all of our families, both district residents and through school of choice. ALL enrollments are now taken at the Business Office located in Brick Elementary (west end offices) at 8970 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. See box for documents you will need to bring with you. While the process will differ a little in terms of the required paperwork depending on what grade level your student is enrolling in, or whether or not you are a resident or school of choice parent, you will now come to one place to do everything. www.lincolnK12.org Lincoln Consolidated Schools POWERSCHOOL PARENT PORTAL SINGLE SIGN-ON PowerSchool has introduced a new single sign-on for parents. This means that parents can have one login to access all of their children’s grades and attendance (grades 6-12) in one place. Also, parents and guardians will no longer have to share logins as each parent or guardian can setup his or her own unique login and password. On MARCH 12th, current account logins will be disabled and parents will need to create a new single sign-on account. Instructions will be available on our website to assist with this process. Student logins and passwords are not affected by this process. PowerSchool has gone mobile! The PowerSchool for Parents app is available for download from the Apple Store and compatible with the iPhone®, iPad® or iPod touch®*. This app will not work until the single sign-on accounts are activated on March 12th.
