PASSIVE RESTRAINTS
The Dart has several improvements to the passive restraint system that the technician
should be aware of. The Dart has airbags in the standard locations, such as driver and
passenger front, front seat thorax, and the driver-side knee blocker. In addition to those
locations, you will also find airbags on the passenger-side knee blocker, full side curtain
airbags, and the rear-seat cushion airbags on both the left and right sides, bringing the
total count to 10 (Fig. 17).
The Dart also uses an occupant
classification system (OCS) that deploys
the passenger front airbags based on the
passenger weight. Before servicing any
airbag component, the passive restraint
system must be disabled. Please refer to
the service information, Restraints
section.
Technicians servicing either of the front
airbags will notice an additional connector
(Fig. 18). This connector is connected to
the adaptive venting solenoid. The
adaptive venting solenoid controls the
force of airbag deployment based on
information received from the impact
sensors.
