A Message from the President
The P-H-M Education Foundation exists to support
excellence in education. The words of our
mission statement are simple and accurately describe
what we do. As you look through this annual
report, you will note many different ways this
mission is being carried out, and many students
and educators who have been encouraged and enriched
by opportunities provided through PHMEF.
If you have contributed to our organization, through giving your time
or resources, we thank you, and hope you share in celebrating our accomplishments.
If you are just learning about this organization, we encourage
you to carefully consider the importance of our mission and
to contact us to learn more about ways you can become involved. We
share in the pride of our excellent schools and are honored to partner
with the administration, staff, businesses, families and community at
large to enrich our students’ educational experiences.
PHMEF serves all of the students and teachers in our district. Last year
alone, we disbursed over $83,000 in funds, and we have disbursed over
$460,000 since our inception in 1996. We take a big-picture, long-term
view of the needs of our students and support varied opportunities
and resources for them. Our grants encourage teachers to dream
a little as they consider creative ways to help our students maximize
their potential.
Fulfilling this important mission is only possible because of the generosity
of our donors, both individual and corporate. We are fortunate
to have the support of a group of corporations, known as Corporations
for Education, whose financial contributions and direct involvement
are making a significant impact in our schools. Others contribute to
our success through their sponsorship and leadership of the Silver Mile
Health and Fitness Fair and the Superintendent’s Luncheon. Grateful
Penn students assist with our Annual Drive, and many families contribute
to PHMEF through the Thank-A-Teacher program each fall and
spring.
We have another exciting year ahead of us, and our P-H-M students
need us more than ever. In these challenging economic times, our
schools need the support of PHMEF to enhance the quality education
P-H-M offers. It is a privilege to build upon the strengths of our district
to maximize the educational experiences of our students. We greatly
appreciate your interest and support and welcome your involvement in
our organization.
2011 Superintendent’s Luncheon
The second annual Superintendent’s Luncheon was held
on October 11 at Windsor Park in Mishawaka. The luncheon
continues a PHMEF tradition, which grew from a breakfast
event, of having P-H-M Superintendent Dr. Jerry Thacker
give the State of the School Corporation address. The 2011
Superintendent’s Luncheon was presented by Teacher’s Credit Union.
Dr. Thacker shared the accomplishments of the previous school year
and his vision for the 2011-12 school year. He listed his major goals as
increased competition with school vouchers, charter and private schools,
P-H-M welcomed 440 students through the non-resident enrollment program.
Combatting a flat line funding for 2011, Dr. Thacker noted P-H-M
focused on three main areas to generate revenue: non-resident enrollment,
energy conservation and increased vocational education funding.
with PHMEF, he was an active supporter
of P-H-M students. From 1982 to 1992, he was
with a $1,000 grant to use for her classroom, an
engraved clock and an engraved brick that will be
placed at Door D at Penn High School.
Community Partnerships
Partnerships in the community allow the P-H-M Education Foundation to further support students and staff. Most notably in 2011-2012 were the
partnerships with Barnes & Noble Bookstores and Penn Wrestling Club.
The Penn Wrestling Club Challenge brought together nearly
100 wrestlers in a 100-, one-minute wrestling challenge at
Penn High School in January. The Penn Wrestling Club is
a nonprofit organization and is led by Penn High School
wrestling coach Brad Harper. Funds raised from the challenge
were split between the Penn Wrestling Club and
P-H-M Education Foundation.
A holiday book drive at Barnes & Noble Bookstore at the University
Park Mall generated 1,836 books for five P-H-M elementary schools that
have the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged students. The
books, valued at a total of $10,246, were distributed to Elm Road Elementary,
Elsie Rogers Elementary, Meadow’s Edge Elementary, Moran
Elementary and Walt Disney Elementary schools. Many thanks to the
P-H-M families and the general public who donated books to support
elementary students.
very much filled a void.” — Shelli Treely, reading coach at Moran
2012 Running is Elementary
Running is Elementary is the brainchild of Horizon Physical Education
Teacher and 2009 P-H-M Teacher of the Year Cindy Batalis. It was
created to engage fourth- and fifth-grade students in P-H-M elementary
schools in a monthlong, after-school running club that culminates in a race
in May.
Because of the threat of severe weather, this year’s Running is Elementary race at Elm
Road Elementary was canceled. To ensure P-H-M students still had the opportunity to run
a 1-mile course, elementary schools incorporated Running is Elementary into year-end
school events. More than 600 students were scheduled to run in the May 7 event at Elm
Road. Each student still received a t-shirt and backsack for completing the monthlong running
club that started in April. During the running club meetings, students learned about
the importance of fitness and health. Special thanks to Cindy along with P-H-M staff and
administration who spent countless of hours organizing RIE.
Corporations for Education - A Division of PHMEF
In 2007, the law firm of May Oberfell Lorber wanted to help make a difference in the
educational opportunities available to students at Walt Disney Elementary School ─ its neighbor to the east.
Through a generous corporate donation, a summer reading program was established.
Soon other businesses wanted to be a part of supporting public education, through the P-H-M Education Foundation,
and Corporations for Education (CFE) was developed. CFE is the corporate division of PHMEF and provides grants to
P-H-M teachers and staff throughout the academic school year.
There are three levels of financial participation in CFE. Corporate Partners pledge $25,000 payable over five years
at $5,000 per year. Corporate Team Leaders pledge $15,000 payable over five years at $3,000 per year.
And, Corporation Team Members pledge $5,000 payable over five years at $1,000 per year.
