Cornerstone Award 2011
The Cornerstone Award, established in 2007, recognizes
individuals or corporations that have made
a substantial contribution of time and resources to
advance the Foundation’s mission to support excellence
in education in P-H-M Schools.
Robert “Bob” Kania recently completed two consecutive
three-year terms on the PHMEF Board,
including board president in 2006-07. Bob’s leadership
of PHMEF is reflected by his roles on the executive
committee as well as the grants, nominating
Teacher-of-the-Year 2012
The P-H-M Education Foundation congratulates
Lavon Dean-Null as the 2012 P-H-M Teacher of
the Year. Lavon began her teaching career at Discovery
Middle School in 2003 and has been teaching
seventh-grade social studies since 2006.
She has taught English in Korea and traveled to
China with Discovery Middle School students and

and Silver Mile committees. Even before Bob’s involvement
with PHMEF, he was an active supporter
of P-H-M students. From 1982 to 1992, he was
president of the Music Boosters and instrumental in
establishing the Choir Boosters. Bob’s involvement
in the community is extensive, including being a
member of Queen of Peace Church and serving as
president of the parish council for ten years. He is a
member of the St. Joseph Valley Officials Association
and was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall
of Fame in 2002. Bob is currently serving as the
auxiliary timer for the University of Notre Dame
Athletic Department.

In addition to social studies, Lavon has taught
language arts, wellness, music and art at Discovery.
She has a B.A. in elementary education from
Bethel College and middle school endorsements in
language arts and social studies.
Lavon truly represents excellence in education.
The P-H-M Education Foundation honored Lavon
with a $1,000 grant to use for her classroom, an
engraved clock and an engraved brick that will be
placed at Door D at Penn High School.
