Scholarships Administered Howard and Ruth Hensler Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established by Ruth E. Hensler, in 1998, with gifted securities. Ruth and her husband Howard valued their education and enjoyed learning throughout their lives. Howard passed away in 1990, and Ruth passed away in 2005. Their family of three children, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren are pleased that this fund will continue to provide scholarships for years to come. The following received a $500 renewal of their original scholarship. n Nathan Laidig, attending Purdue University n Matt Minix, attending Purdue University n Christopher Sobecki, attending Indiana University n Tyler Leamon, attending Purdue University n Erin Yeoman, attending Ball State University n Bill Warner, attending Eastern Kentucky University Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Thacker Scholarship Fund In recognition of the importance that education plays in the lives of individuals and communities, Superintendent Dr. Jerry Thacker and his wife, Donna, established an annual $1,000 scholarship fund in 2006-2007 to be given to one academically outstanding student. This year’s recipient is Patrick Adkins, attending Bethel College. Abigail K. Zook Memorial Scholarship Fund A scholarship fund was established in 2011 in memory of Abigail Katherine Zook, who was a fifth-grader at Mary Frank Elementary School. This fund will follow Abigail’s class, with a boy and girl to be awarded $500 each in their fifth-grade, eighth-grade, and senior high school year. This year’s recipients are Mary Frank students Leigh Ann Harting and Kyle Salmons. www.phmef.org P-H-M Education Foundation 12
2012 Running is Elementary Running is Elementary is the brainchild of Horizon Physical Education Teacher and 2009 P-H-M Teacher of the Year Cindy Batalis. It was created to engage fourth- and fifth-grade students in P-H-M elementary schools in a monthlong, after-school running club that culminates in a race in May. Because of the threat of severe weather, this year’s Running is Elementary race at Elm Road Elementary was canceled. To ensure P-H-M students still had the opportunity to run a 1-mile course, elementary schools incorporated Running is Elementary into year-end school events. More than 600 students were scheduled to run in the May 7 event at Elm Road. Each student still received a t-shirt and backsack for completing the monthlong running club that started in April. During the running club meetings, students learned about the importance of fitness and health.
