Ivon Warmington Trophy


What a wonderful summer we have had, and<br />

I hope you have all taken advantage of the<br />

weather and been flying.<br />

The Scott’s Trophy was to be held on March<br />

17th, and with the club rooms decorated for<br />

St Patricks day, the drought was broken and<br />

the competition was cancelled.<br />

We are extending an invite to the Air Safari<br />

participants for lunch this coming Saturday<br />

23 rd to enjoy our hospitality. It would be<br />

great to see a good club turnout at the club<br />

to welcome visiting aircraft.<br />

Now we have a wonderful new indoor<br />

outdoor flow at the clubrooms, we have<br />

introduced summer barbeques. The first was<br />

on the Friday the 1 st of February and it was<br />

then decided to have them on a regular<br />

monthly basis. March the 1 st was our second<br />

barbeque and the news had spread far and<br />

wide and we had an international member<br />

attend. There was also a trophy on display,<br />

but alas not many local members were there<br />

to see it that night. The next night will be<br />

Friday the 5 th of April, put it in your diary<br />

now and come down and celebrate the last<br />

Friday of daylight savings.<br />

The AvKiwi seminar entitled “Get the Mental<br />

Picture” was held in New Plymouth on<br />

Monday the<br />

4th CLUB CAPTAIN’S CORNER<br />

of March<br />

with a good contingent of eight <strong>Hawera</strong><br />

members attending. We came away with a<br />

much greater appreciation of the term<br />

situational awareness and the importance of<br />

it to us as pilots.<br />

I hear through the grapevine that one of our<br />

members, (Who will remain anonymous ….<br />

Brendan Mulligan) got a ride in the rescue<br />

helicopter having broken his collar bone in a<br />

motorbike accident, it sounded like it was<br />

almost worth it. I hope Brendan recovers<br />

quickly so that he can return to flying with<br />

us.<br />

Last but not least I would like to extend the<br />

clubs congratulations to Nathan Busby and<br />

his partner on the birth of their first child. A<br />

budding new pilot for <strong>Hawera</strong> in 16 years<br />

time.<br />

That’s enough from me this month, catch up<br />

again next month with hopefully a<br />

contribution from our Instructor and our<br />

President to get their perspective on the<br />

club activities.<br />

Wings Over Wairarapa<br />

Wings over Wairarapa is a biennial Airshow<br />

at Hood <strong>Aero</strong>drome in Masterton. When the<br />

2011 show was held, we had been planning<br />

to fly in, and we had a full plane. The<br />

weather though had other plans and we<br />

decided to try again another year. That year<br />

was this one, 19 th January 2013. We left<br />

early in the morning from <strong>Hawera</strong> where the<br />

raising sun was orange (from the Australian<br />

fires maybe.)<br />

We flew along the coast past Ohakea and<br />

Foxpine, we crossed the range South of the<br />

Manawatu gorge.<br />

The visibility on the Eastern side of the<br />

range was reduced. But traffic on 119.10<br />

was all heading the same way, to Masterton.<br />

Getting into Masterton was easy, all<br />

uncontrolled and everything worked as it<br />

should. We were parked on the Eastern side<br />

Iwi the Kiwi<br />

short time as it started to get too windy ,<br />

but Iwi the Kiwi was a sight to see, although<br />

not actually flying. Iwi has a silver fern on<br />

front left side and on the other side a place<br />

for advertising measuring 23 x 23 foot.<br />

The Yaks put on a good display, if not<br />

slightly sporadic the first time they were in<br />

the air. But the real reason this was the<br />

popular Airshow that it was, was the fact<br />

that this was the last show the Mosquito<br />

would be at prior to the two week process of<br />

preparing Mosquito to be shipped to America<br />

in a specially designed shipping container.<br />

The Mosquito put on a good show, of<br />

course. There was also some great<br />

formation displays that had the mosquito<br />

leading.<br />

The jets also had a good formation display<br />

with three L-39’s a Strikemaster and two<br />

Vampire’s. We enjoyed watching the RNZAF<br />

displays with the Iroquois, Orion and 757.<br />

Unfortunately the red checkers weren’t<br />

there. We enjoyed our day and there were<br />

plenty of people from <strong>Hawera</strong> we spotted<br />

over there, but the best was to arrive at an<br />

in our planes and taking them on a day trip<br />

to an airshow is a fun and educational<br />

experience. Next major airshow is Classic<br />

<strong>Hawera</strong> <strong>Aero</strong> <strong>Club</strong> Incorporation 4


FlyingNZ Nationals 2013<br />

In November <strong>Hawera</strong> <strong>Aero</strong> <strong>Club</strong> had a strong<br />

team compete in the Regional Competitions in<br />

Te Kuiti. Graeme Bycroft and myself (Julie<br />

Ingram) competed in the Ivon Warmington<br />

Liferaft dropping competition and came away<br />

with a win. Winning at Regional level gives<br />

you the opportunity to attend and compete at<br />

the Nationals. The Nationals this year were in<br />

Motueka, a nice close place for us to attend.<br />

Motueka <strong>Aero</strong> <strong>Club</strong> were very helpful and<br />

very friendly. They had members always<br />

happy to give us a ride into town for a<br />

donation to their new hanger fund.<br />

We flew down to Motueka on the Thursday<br />

morning arriving in time for lunch. We<br />

enjoyed a great meal on the Thursday night,<br />

all catered for by the club.<br />

Friday we had to be at the field early for the<br />

briefing. Then because our competition wasn’t<br />

till 4pm, Graeme decided he needed to get<br />

into town for a breakfast of Eggs Benedict.<br />

Breakfast eaten we returned to the airfield,<br />

because it was almost lunch time and we’d<br />

ordered lunch!<br />

We had to get ready for our competition, I had to<br />

get my harness on and we had to take out all<br />

loose items and remove the door.<br />

Our competition is the Ivon Warmington trophy,<br />

where the pilot (Graeme) flys an approach at 200<br />

feet and informs me (Julie) when he wants the<br />

raft pushed out the door. When the competition<br />

was over it was also the end of the full day of<br />

competition flying. We had two excellent speakers<br />

at the Friday night dinner, with Graeme planning<br />

on putting big wheels on 172 and moving nose<br />

wheel to tail with plans to land it on big rocks in<br />

river beds. Saturday was a rest day, we were<br />

meant to fly to D’urville Island but the wind was<br />

wrong, so we headed to Karamea for lunch then<br />

Murchison and back to Motueka. That night was<br />

prizegiving and guess what…We Won!<br />

Working Bee for Ranchslider<br />

The idea of a putting a ranchslider/stacker<br />

door in the club house was formed quite<br />

some time ago on a Friday night. Slowly the<br />

idea was thought through and decided that<br />

we could do it and it would improve the<br />

clubrooms. I was taken to the AGM and<br />

followed up at the following committee<br />

meeting. Graeme had a sound plan and the<br />

plan was put to action with plans done by<br />

….. The first working bee was on Friday 7th<br />

and Saturday 8th, with a great turn out of<br />

members to help and great progress was<br />

made. The<br />

The cladding went on at the next working<br />

bee on Friday 14 th December after work and<br />

more good progress was made.<br />

Graeme put in a lot of solo work on<br />

Saturdays and Sundays between then and<br />

the last working bee that was on Saturday<br />

2 nd March. That working bee was to get the<br />

painting done, there was a lot more painting<br />

and work there and finally we were making<br />

progress. Graeme and I headed to Mitre 10<br />

to pick the paint for the interior wall, we<br />

thought we would make it obvious that we<br />

had painted the wall and pick an outrageous<br />

colour! The job is almost completed now<br />

with just some more finishing paint work to<br />

do and we have a brilliant door to enjoy, I’d<br />

like to thank all the helpers over all days.<br />

Correcting Errors in Official Documents<br />

61.29(e) An incorrect entry in a logbook may be altered only<br />

by putting a line through the entry and by adding the correct<br />

information either beside the entry or on a new line.<br />

Rule 61.29(e) provides for the correction<br />

of a logbook entry. Correcting fluid (e.g.<br />

twink), stickers or labels do not meet<br />

this rule requirement.<br />

This is the official rule set by CAA, if you<br />

make a mistake in any official document like<br />

your logbook and the aircrafts Technical Log<br />

you need to rule a straight line through it, the<br />

mistake still needs to be readable.<br />

DON’T USE TWINK<br />

<strong>Hawera</strong> <strong>Aero</strong> <strong>Club</strong> Online Booking<br />

There has been much talk over a number of<br />

years that there needs to greater access for<br />

pilots to the club aircraft and one of these<br />

ways is to have a better more modern<br />

approach to the booking system. We are<br />

going to trial Google Calendar to see if it will<br />

be suitable for our needs.<br />

We are hoping that every member that will be<br />

using the booking system will use their own<br />

login, which is a gmail account, if you have<br />

an android smartphone you will already have<br />

one.<br />

The <strong>Aero</strong> <strong>Club</strong> calendar will be shared with<br />

your gmail account and then when you make<br />

a booking it will be possible to see who<br />

makes, modifies or moves a booking.<br />

The example of the diary below is an example<br />

of last weeks diary and how it looks when the<br />

date has past.<br />

To make this work every flight will have to be<br />

in the diary. After talking to other clubs that<br />

use google calendar that’s the one thing that<br />

they found as the biggest issue. For example<br />

someone is at home and they check the diary<br />

and find, the plane they want is available and<br />

book it, drive to the club to use and find that<br />

someone has already taken the plane and not<br />

booked it.<br />

This is a very exciting advancement in the<br />

club and we need everyone to support it, if<br />

you have any suggestions to make it work<br />

better we’d love to hear them.<br />

So all you need to do is get a gmail account<br />

and inform us.<br />
