Wings Over Wairarapa
Wings over Wairarapa is a biennial Airshow
at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton. When the
2011 show was held, we had been planning
to fly in, and we had a full plane. The
weather though had other plans and we
decided to try again another year. That year
was this one, 19 th January 2013. We left
early in the morning from Hawera where the
raising sun was orange (from the Australian
fires maybe.)
We flew along the coast past Ohakea and
Foxpine, we crossed the range South of the
Manawatu gorge.
Yak 52’s
The visibility on the Eastern side of the
range was reduced. But traffic on 119.10
was all heading the same way, to Masterton.
Getting into Masterton was easy, all
uncontrolled and everything worked as it
should. We were parked on the Eastern side
of the field
and driven
ov er to
A i r s h o w
side.
We ha d
time to look
around the
trade stalls
and ground
displays.
They had a
seven story
hot a ir
balloon that
they could
only have
up for a
Iwi the Kiwi
short time as it started to get too windy ,
but Iwi the Kiwi was a sight to see, although
not actually flying. Iwi has a silver fern on
front left side and on the other side a place
for advertising measuring 23 x 23 foot.
The Yaks put on a good display, if not
slightly sporadic the first time they were in
the air. But the real reason this was the
popular Airshow that it was, was the fact
that this was the last show the Mosquito
would be at prior to the two week process of
preparing Mosquito to be shipped to America
in a specially designed shipping container.
The Mosquito put on a good show, of
course. There was also some great
formation displays that had the mosquito
leading.
The jets also had a good formation display
with three L-39’s a Strikemaster and two
Vampire’s. We enjoyed watching the RNZAF
displays with the Iroquois, Orion and 757.
Unfortunately the red checkers weren’t
there. We enjoyed our day and there were
plenty of people from Hawera we spotted
over there, but the best was to arrive at an
Airshow is to fly in. We have valuable asset
in our planes and taking them on a day trip
to an airshow is a fun and educational
experience. Next major airshow is Classic
Fighters at Omaka over Easter. Flying into
