Ivon Warmington Trophy

What a wonderful summer we have had, and
I hope you have all taken advantage of the
weather and been flying.
The Scott’s Trophy was to be held on March
17th, and with the club rooms decorated for
St Patricks day, the drought was broken and
the competition was cancelled.
We are extending an invite to the Air Safari
participants for lunch this coming Saturday
23 rd to enjoy our hospitality. It would be
great to see a good club turnout at the club
to welcome visiting aircraft.
Now we have a wonderful new indoor
outdoor flow at the clubrooms, we have
introduced summer barbeques. The first was
on the Friday the 1 st of February and it was
then decided to have them on a regular
monthly basis. March the 1 st was our second
barbeque and the news had spread far and
wide and we had an international member
attend. There was also a trophy on display,
but alas not many local members were there
to see it that night. The next night will be
Friday the 5 th of April, put it in your diary
now and come down and celebrate the last
Friday of daylight savings.
The AvKiwi seminar entitled “Get the Mental
Picture” was held in New Plymouth on
Monday the
4th CLUB CAPTAIN’S CORNER
of March
with a good contingent of eight Hawera
members attending. We came away with a
much greater appreciation of the term
situational awareness and the importance of
it to us as pilots.
I hear through the grapevine that one of our
members, (Who will remain anonymous ….
Brendan Mulligan) got a ride in the rescue
helicopter having broken his collar bone in a
motorbike accident, it sounded like it was
almost worth it. I hope Brendan recovers
quickly so that he can return to flying with
us.
Last but not least I would like to extend the
clubs congratulations to Nathan Busby and
his partner on the birth of their first child. A
budding new pilot for Hawera in 16 years
time.
That’s enough from me this month, catch up
again next month with hopefully a
contribution from our Instructor and our
President to get their perspective on the
club activities.
Wings Over Wairarapa
Wings over Wairarapa is a biennial Airshow
at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton. When the
2011 show was held, we had been planning
to fly in, and we had a full plane. The
weather though had other plans and we
decided to try again another year. That year
was this one, 19 th January 2013. We left
early in the morning from Hawera where the
raising sun was orange (from the Australian
fires maybe.)
We flew along the coast past Ohakea and
Foxpine, we crossed the range South of the
Manawatu gorge.
Yak 52’s
The visibility on the Eastern side of the
range was reduced. But traffic on 119.10
was all heading the same way, to Masterton.
Getting into Masterton was easy, all
uncontrolled and everything worked as it
should. We were parked on the Eastern side
of the field
and driven
ov er to
A i r s h o w
side.
We ha d
time to look
around the
trade stalls
and ground
displays.
They had a
seven story
hot a ir
balloon that
they could
only have
up for a
Iwi the Kiwi
short time as it started to get too windy ,
but Iwi the Kiwi was a sight to see, although
not actually flying. Iwi has a silver fern on
front left side and on the other side a place
for advertising measuring 23 x 23 foot.
The Yaks put on a good display, if not
slightly sporadic the first time they were in
the air. But the real reason this was the
popular Airshow that it was, was the fact
that this was the last show the Mosquito
would be at prior to the two week process of
preparing Mosquito to be shipped to America
in a specially designed shipping container.
The Mosquito put on a good show, of
course. There was also some great
formation displays that had the mosquito
leading.
The jets also had a good formation display
with three L-39’s a Strikemaster and two
Vampire’s. We enjoyed watching the RNZAF
displays with the Iroquois, Orion and 757.
Unfortunately the red checkers weren’t
there. We enjoyed our day and there were
plenty of people from Hawera we spotted
over there, but the best was to arrive at an
Airshow is to fly in. We have valuable asset
in our planes and taking them on a day trip
to an airshow is a fun and educational
experience. Next major airshow is Classic
Fighters at Omaka over Easter. Flying into
O m a k a
Airshow is a
bit more
complicate d
and is best
FlyingNZ Nationals 2013
In November Hawera Aero Club had a strong
team compete in the Regional Competitions in
Te Kuiti. Graeme Bycroft and myself (Julie
Ingram) competed in the Ivon Warmington
Liferaft dropping competition and came away
with a win. Winning at Regional level gives
you the opportunity to attend and compete at
the Nationals. The Nationals this year were in
Motueka, a nice close place for us to attend.
Motueka Aero Club were very helpful and
very friendly. They had members always
happy to give us a ride into town for a
donation to their new hanger fund.
We flew down to Motueka on the Thursday
morning arriving in time for lunch. We
enjoyed a great meal on the Thursday night,
all catered for by the club.
Friday we had to be at the field early for the
briefing. Then because our competition wasn’t
till 4pm, Graeme decided he needed to get
into town for a breakfast of Eggs Benedict.
Breakfast eaten we returned to the airfield,
because it was almost lunch time and we’d
ordered lunch!
We had to get ready for our competition, I had to
get my harness on and we had to take out all
loose items and remove the door.
Our competition is the Ivon Warmington trophy,
where the pilot (Graeme) flys an approach at 200
feet and informs me (Julie) when he wants the
raft pushed out the door. When the competition
was over it was also the end of the full day of
competition flying. We had two excellent speakers
at the Friday night dinner, with Graeme planning
on putting big wheels on 172 and moving nose
wheel to tail with plans to land it on big rocks in
river beds. Saturday was a rest day, we were
meant to fly to D’urville Island but the wind was
wrong, so we headed to Karamea for lunch then
Murchison and back to Motueka. That night was
prizegiving and guess what…We Won!
First Time Hawera’s won that trophy!
Working Bee for Ranchslider
The idea of a putting a ranchslider/stacker
door in the club house was formed quite
some time ago on a Friday night. Slowly the
idea was thought through and decided that
we could do it and it would improve the
clubrooms. I was taken to the AGM and
followed up at the following committee
meeting. Graeme had a sound plan and the
plan was put to action with plans done by
….. The first working bee was on Friday 7th
and Saturday 8th, with a great turn out of
members to help and great progress was
made. The
old window
w a s
r e m o v e d
and the
door was
put in. The
p r o j e c t
couldn’t be
e n c l o s e d
until the
c o u n c i l
i ns pe c to r
had been
to check
the work.
It passed!
The cladding went on at the next working
bee on Friday 14 th December after work and
more good progress was made.
Graeme put in a lot of solo work on
Saturdays and Sundays between then and
the last working bee that was on Saturday
2 nd March. That working bee was to get the
painting done, there was a lot more painting
and work there and finally we were making
progress. Graeme and I headed to Mitre 10
to pick the paint for the interior wall, we
thought we would make it obvious that we
had painted the wall and pick an outrageous
colour! The job is almost completed now
with just some more finishing paint work to
do and we have a brilliant door to enjoy, I’d
like to thank all the helpers over all days.
Thanks to Graeme Bycroft, Christina Bycroft,
Guy Oakley, Terry Ingram, Julie Ingram,
Wilt Hodges, Peter Williams, Jacob Maddren,
Rochelle Fleming & Andre De’Ath, great club
spirit everyone!
Correcting Errors in Official Documents
61.29(e) An incorrect entry in a logbook may be altered only
by putting a line through the entry and by adding the correct
information either beside the entry or on a new line.
Rule 61.29(e) provides for the correction
of a logbook entry. Correcting fluid (e.g.
twink), stickers or labels do not meet
this rule requirement.
This is the official rule set by CAA, if you
make a mistake in any official document like
your logbook and the aircrafts Technical Log
you need to rule a straight line through it, the
mistake still needs to be readable.
DON’T USE TWINK
Hawera Aero Club Online Booking
There has been much talk over a number of
years that there needs to greater access for
pilots to the club aircraft and one of these
ways is to have a better more modern
approach to the booking system. We are
going to trial Google Calendar to see if it will
be suitable for our needs.
We are hoping that every member that will be
using the booking system will use their own
login, which is a gmail account, if you have
an android smartphone you will already have
one.
The Aero Club calendar will be shared with
your gmail account and then when you make
a booking it will be possible to see who
makes, modifies or moves a booking.
The example of the diary below is an example
of last weeks diary and how it looks when the
date has past.
To make this work every flight will have to be
in the diary. After talking to other clubs that
use google calendar that’s the one thing that
they found as the biggest issue. For example
someone is at home and they check the diary
and find, the plane they want is available and
book it, drive to the club to use and find that
someone has already taken the plane and not
booked it.
This is a very exciting advancement in the
club and we need everyone to support it, if
you have any suggestions to make it work
better we’d love to hear them.
So all you need to do is get a gmail account
and inform us.
