The Calendar Handbook for 2011–2012 6 Visit and Volunteer Schools welcome visitors who want to learn more about our programs, meet staff and tour the facilities. When visiting a school, please register at the school office upon arrival, and arrange meetings and classroom visits in advance to be sure the time is appropriate. More about visiting schools is included later in this handbook. We encourage family members and other citizens to lend a helping hand or share their expertise with students through our volunteer program or by serving on school system committees. Most schools have a Parent Teacher Association (PTA), which offers an excellent avenue for becoming involved in school life. ★ Family and Community: involved Play an Active Role Family and community involvement pay huge dividends in a child’s education. Every school day, FCPS parents support education, knowing it takes strong teamwork among teachers, families, community partners and schools to provide the first-class education all children deserve. Help children succeed: ✓ Expect youngsters to do their best in school ✓ Ask what they learned in class ✓ Encourage them to find out more ✓ Provide space, time and materials for homework ✓ Ensure nutritious meals, physical activity and rest ✓ Read and talk with children about books ✓ Limit television viewing and other passive activities ✓ Champion trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship ✓ Keep informed and learn about the issues that affect education through conferences, notes, phone calls, newsletters, FindOutFirst e-mail, FCPS TV and www.fcps.org Parents, to get more involved: ✓ Come to PTA and school events ✓ Chaperone field trips ✓ Speak on career days ✓ Assist in classrooms ✓ Volunteer time on the School Improvement Team or PTA ✓ Serve on a BOE, FCPS or PTA advisory committee (see page 2) ✓ Ask teachers how you can assist Businesses and community: Lots of businesses and community volunteers partner with FCPS to spark student interests and enrich education, inside and beyond the classroom. At every school, a partnership helps in at least one way to: ✓ Donate supplies, funds, coupons, rewards and incentives ✓ Provide mentors and internships ✓ Hire work-study students ✓ Host field trips ✓ Judge competitions ✓ Speak on career days and help with mock interviews ✓ Visit classrooms to help students ✓ Sponsor scholarships ✓ Serve on School Improvement Teams and advisory committees For more about getting involved, contact the local school. ★
Learn More on FCPS TV The FCPS Television crew produces and broadcasts a wide variety of programs on Comcast’s Channel 18 in Frederick County: the FCPS Newsbreak, sCOOL Science, interview shows Public Education Today and Wellness Watch and Board of Education meetings. Programming also includes NASA-TV, bulletins on school closings and other urgent information, plus staff and student accomplishments, employment opportunities, upcoming events and school menus. Your school will provide appointment information as conference time approaches. ★ FindOutFirst Get free news via the FCPS FindOutFirst e-mail service, including: n Emergency notices n Calendar updates n School menus n Board of Education action and much more. Register your phone for text messages for emergencyonly notices such as schools closing due to weather, power outage and the like. In a critical countywide emergency more serious than schools closing due to weather, FOF may contact registered subscribers using voice mail: Register your phone number: home, work or cellular. Sign up from the home page at www.fcps.org. IMPORTANT! FindOutFirst e-mail delivers most FCPS news before other media, but e-mail is not always the fastest way to get school news in an emergency. FCPS also posts emergency notices at www.fcps.org, broadcasts bulletins on Cable Channel 18 and sends news to radio stations and other media that share school news. ★ FCPS License Plates When you order an education license plate for your car, $15 of the cost goes to support school technology. Please contact the Finance Department at 301-644-5043 to find out how your car can sport FCPS pride and support local schools, or visit www. fcps.org for details. ★ Senior Citizens Guests age 60 or older are entitled to free admission, on a space- available basis, to FCPS-sponsored events such as concerts, plays and athletic events. Please note: High school graduations and state-sponsored athletic playoffs are not included. ★ Gifts for Education FindOutFirst e-mail – sign up at www.fcps.org 7 T he Gifts for Education pro gram provides an opportunity for chari table givers to help extend Frederick County Public Schools’ reach beyond normal budgetary limits. Managed by the Community Foundation of Frederick County, Inc., the program offers three ways to give. You may designate your gift for: ◆ An endowment fund with the annual investment return distributed to respond to needs as they emerge ◆ The education purpose of your choice ◆ A short-term capital initiative, such as a stadium renovation or band uniforms Gifts to any of these funds are fully tax deductible as permitted by law.
