Dear IPSERA participant,
It’s a great pleasure for us to welcome you at Maastricht University
to the 20th Annual IPSERA conference. After
Eindhoven and Enschede this is the third time that the IPSERA conference
touches base in The Netherlands, and we are very honored
to be the organizers of this 20 th conference!
Maastricht University’s School of Business and
Economics (SBE) is the youngest Economics and
Business faculty in The Netherlands (founded 1983). Today we have
over 300 staff of which 1/3 of foreign
nationality and 3,750 students in Bachelor and Master programs of
which 40% has an international
background. SBE is located in an “old” Jesuit
monastery, built in 1923, very close to the well-known “Vrijthof”
square in the inner city of Maastricht. To put it shortly, we are
young, we are international, we have inspirational facilities and we
are close to where it all happens in Maastricht. We think these are
the right conditions for hosting the 20 th IPSERA conference.
We have had many successful conferences over the past 20 years. Last year Veli-Matti Virolainen and his team organized
an excellent conference in
Lappeenranta and raised the bar again. However, we dare to take the challenge and are proud on what we have put in
place for you. Apart from the traditional paper presentation sessions, we ask your attention for a special practitioner’s
seminar on Monday, the
interesting keynote speakers and the ‘Maastricht style’ evening programs.
The theme of this year is ‘Vision 20/20: Preparing Today for Tomorrow’s Challenges’. It is inspired by the fact that
IPSERA celebrates the 20 th edition of the conference, but also by the fact that it seems to be a moment in time where a
lot of people and organizations look forward and think about the future. If you Google on ‘Vision 2020’ you will get
over 1,2 million hits!
Today, IPSERA can look back at twenty years of developing, presenting, discussing and sharing knowledge on
Purchasing and Supply Management. Imagine the body of knowledge that we have built together, how many
Megabytes will it be if we put all the twenty conference proceedings into one file? We learned a lot over the past
twenty years, but luckily for us there is still so much work to do.
Vision 20/20 also refers to the normal visual acuity of the human eye, it’s a measure of how clear one can read from a
20 feet distance. I hope this conference helps you to think forward and look into the future with a clear eye. There are
many challenges ahead, however with the research we discuss the coming days, we are in a unique position to help
profit and non-profit organizations to prepare for these challenges.
On behalf of IPSERA, Maastricht University, the School of Business and Economics and our dedicated organizing
committee – Pascalle, Lieven, Merel and Martin - I wish you a very pleasant stay here in Maastricht.
