years, however, more and more utilities started to question this<br />

practice as the loads in current systems have become very<br />

sensitive to momentary interruptions. Auto-reclosing can create<br />

momentary interruptions to a large number of customers,<br />

yielding bad power quality consequences. As a result, some<br />

utilities are trying to eliminate the auto-reclosing practice.<br />

However, eliminating the practice implies a fundamental<br />

change in planning and operating a power distribution system.<br />

It seems that one cannot achieve simultaneous improvement on<br />

both power reliability and power quality using auto-reclosing.<br />

In view of the far-reaching impact of this issue, this work<br />

conducts a survey as a starting point to prepare industry to deal<br />

with the issue in a proactive and strategic manner.<br />

Abstract: With the advance of digital relays, adaptive<br />

protection schemes have become reality. This type of protection<br />

schemes can be useful in industrial systems with synchronous<br />

generators that operate in both modes: parallel and isolated<br />

(islanded). In this context, it is important to select the relays<br />

that must have their settings automatically changed based on<br />

the system operation condition. This work presents a simple<br />

classification approach to select the relays to be used in the<br />

adaptive scheme. Indeed, the approach selects the branches<br />

protected by overcurrent protection whose relays must be<br />

adaptively set. This classification is based on short-circuit<br />

studies. This scheme improves the selectivity and coordination<br />

of overcurrent protection schemes since it is not necessary to<br />

find a solution to meet both parallel and islanded operation. The<br />

proposed approach is successful applied to a real Brazilian<br />

industrial plant with three cogeneration units.<br />

Abstract: The research and development of electric and<br />

mathematical models for the components of the electric<br />

networks and for the loads contribute for the computer<br />

simulation of the electric power systems that it happens in the<br />

smallest time and results in compatible values with the reality.<br />

This is the subject of this research that we describe in this<br />

article, where the main objective was the development of a<br />

three-phase load flow for the analysis of electric power<br />

distribution networks with some variables that are not<br />

deterministic, particularly the loads. In this sense, the imprecise<br />

variables were represented as fuzzy numbers (in the bell form)<br />

and it is presented a Specialized Three-Phase Load Flow that<br />

incorporates fuzzy sets and respective mathematical operations.<br />

The obtained results confirm the good performance of this new<br />

method.<br />

Abstract: This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the<br />

Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) for improving smallsignal<br />

stability of electric power systems. The IPFC power<br />

injection model and its differential equations are included in the<br />

power flow. The dynamic analysis is performed using the<br />

power sensitivity model. Simulations in a two area test system<br />

show that the IPFC equipped with a POD can provide the<br />

damping of the critical oscillation modes, improving the system<br />

dynamic performance, in addition to the flexibility to control<br />

the transmission lines power flows.<br />

Abstract: In this paper the harmonic content of current and<br />

voltage between terminals of 543 electrical arcs artificially<br />

generated were obtained by applying the Windowed Fourier<br />

Transform. This application is based on shifting a window on<br />

the signs in study and calculating the coefficients of the<br />

Discrete Fourier Transform, allowing a time-frequency analysis<br />

of signals. A statistical analysis of the results has permitted the<br />

identification of a harmonic signature of electrical arc.<br />

Enhancement of Data Rate for User Cooperation<br />

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a different scheme based<br />

on user cooperation diversity, in which we obtain an increase in<br />

the data rate. In particular, we present performance analysis<br />

using conventional CDMA (code division multiple access)<br />

implementation for two users. Cooperation among users has<br />

been shown to achieve significant gains as compared to a noncooperative<br />

system. The results presented here show that the<br />

new scheme of cooperation achieves substantial increase of<br />

data rate, keeping the average bit error probability close to<br />

values obtained in [3]. Regarding the number of spreading<br />

codes, there are costs associated with our cooperative scheme,<br />

but even so our proposed strategy leads not only to an increase<br />

in throughput but also to a simpler system.<br />
