Education & Youth
For over fifty years, FEGS has delivered
innovative programs that prepare
at-risk youth for a successful transition
to independent and productive adulthood.
The young people we serve are among the
estimated 200,000 New York City disconnected
youth between the ages of 16 and 24 who are
not in school and not working, as well as many
youth who are still in school but have fallen
behind. These youth are at high risk of poverty,
unemployment and other poor life outcomes.
FEGS’ approach across its portfolio of some
45 programs features services that meet youth
where they are, with specialized academic
supports that prepare them for post-secondary
success; career development services that
provide internship and employment opportunities
that broaden career choices; and social supports
and mentoring that address emotional needs.
We are proud to continue our long partnership
with the New York City Department of Education
(DOE) as a co-founder of several successful
small schools, a major provider of Learn to Work
(LTW) programs and a partner in multiple
large-scale initiatives serving New York City
young people. Our CareerFirsts program
model and state-of-the-art data system track
participant and program outcomes across a
number of youth development, education and
employment programs. The Academy Program,
cited in a 2011 report by the Center for an
Urban Future as a “best practice initiative for
low-skilled foster youth,” supports our efforts to
expand this model across New York City and
beyond. Selected this year by the Mayor’s Center
for Economic Opportunity (CEO) to implement
Project Rise, a federal Social Innovation Fund
initiative, FEGS’ portfolio of targeted programs
over the past year has inspired success among
4,500 New York City youth.
