<strong>Europe</strong>an <strong>Horse</strong> Network.<br />

<strong>The</strong> EHN is a non-profit network of stakeholders act<strong>in</strong>g at a World, <strong>Europe</strong>an, National<br />

or Regional level with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Europe</strong>an horse sector. Its purpose is to:<br />

n Promote the development of the<br />

horse sector <strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

n To help members coord<strong>in</strong>ate their<br />

activities <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease the visibility and impact of<br />

the horse sector.<br />

n Act as a platform for the<br />

horse <strong>in</strong>dustry to<br />

communicate common issues<br />

with <strong>Europe</strong>an<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions and media at the<br />

<strong>Europe</strong>an level.


Environmental<br />

protection:<br />

<strong>in</strong> a number<br />

of <strong>Europe</strong>an<br />

regions native<br />

ponies are<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g used to<br />

graze areas of<br />

environmental<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest as<br />

they selectively<br />

graze while<br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g endangered flowers and plants.<br />

Farm<strong>in</strong>g and Forestry: Draft horses are<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly be<strong>in</strong>g used for logg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong><br />

on difficult sites, preserv<strong>in</strong>g fragile ecosystems<br />

and caus<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>imal damage. In Sweden,<br />

horses transport more than 1 million m3 of logs<br />

a year. <strong>The</strong> draught horse is be<strong>in</strong>g seriously<br />

re-evaluated as an energy source that is at the<br />

same time <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely renewable and totally ecofriendly<br />

Tourism and revenue for local<br />

economies: <strong>The</strong> Punchestown<br />

Rac<strong>in</strong>g Festival <strong>in</strong> Ireland attracts<br />

around 100,000 spectators a year<br />

and generates 43 million euros worth for<br />

the local economy and 2000 part-time jobs.<br />

This is just one race meet<strong>in</strong>g of over 37,000<br />

races held <strong>in</strong> the EU every year.<br />

Economic cluster<strong>in</strong>g: R&D and <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

product development Basse-Normandie’s<br />

economic horse cluster develops l<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

between research and companies to<br />

develop <strong>in</strong>novative products and services.<br />

<strong>The</strong> area produces 20% of France’s foals and<br />

more than 10,000 local jobs.<br />

International Sport<strong>in</strong>g success: In the<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational rank<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Showjump<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Europe</strong> has 16 of the top 20 riders, and<br />

all but one of the others have their base<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>. In <strong>in</strong>ternational dressage all<br />

but one of the top twenty riders are<br />

<strong>Europe</strong>an.<br />

Social, health and educational benefits of<br />

horses: <strong>The</strong> horse’s movements give the<br />

sensation of walk<strong>in</strong>g and can help build<br />

muscles <strong>in</strong> those who have trouble mov<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

such as children with cerebral palsy. <strong>Horse</strong>s<br />

are successfully be<strong>in</strong>g used <strong>in</strong> dependency<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ics, prisons, and relationship and family<br />

council<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>Horse</strong><br />

breed<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

<strong>Europe</strong><br />

leads the<br />

world. <strong>The</strong><br />

top<br />

thoroughbred<br />

racehorse <strong>in</strong><br />

the world,<br />

Harb<strong>in</strong>ger<br />

(GB) comes<br />

from <strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

And other <strong>Europe</strong>an breeds such as the<br />

Icelandic, or the Connemara, are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly sought after and exported all<br />

over the world. World famous studs such as<br />

Babolna <strong>in</strong> Hungary which breeds arabians of<br />

world renown.<br />

Culture and<br />

<strong>The</strong> horse is<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ked with<br />

<strong>Europe</strong>’s<br />

cultural<br />

heritage.<br />

Many of<br />

<strong>Europe</strong>’s<br />

state studs<br />

are national<br />

monuments,<br />

for example,<br />

Marbach,<br />

Germany’s<br />

oldest state<br />

stud farm.<br />

<strong>Horse</strong>s mean<br />

jobs Whether<br />

it is direct<br />

employment<br />

<strong>in</strong> car<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

horses, or the<br />

thousands of<br />

<strong>in</strong>direct jobs such<br />

as veter<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

surgeons,<br />

farriers, saddlers,<br />

the <strong>Europe</strong>an<br />

horse sector is a<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g market<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout<br />

<strong>Europe</strong>, many of these <strong>in</strong> rural areas with<br />

high unemployment. <strong>The</strong> horse sector is also<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g farmers by provid<strong>in</strong>g a market for<br />

hay and feed.
