FHS Marching Band
The FHS Marching Band began rehearsing this year’s program during camp
at Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan this summer (this year’s
seniors are above). This year’s program is called “Darkest Before the Dawn,” and is
a play on the phrase “it’s always darkest before the dawn,” in that the show starts
dark and ominous, and musical and visually things go from bad to worse—a
journey from great darkness into light.
Prelude for Piano, Op. 34, No. 14 by Dmitri Shostakovich,
Prophecy of the Earth by David Gillingham, Medea’s Dance of Vengeance by
Samuel Barber, Redemption of a Fallen Angel by David Gillingham. ALL members
of the band will be dressed VERY darkly for the first 3/4 of the show, but then at
the crucial moment when the show ‘hits bottom,’ there is a huge color palette
change (with lots of happy yellow and white), as well as a big musical change. The
band will be performing at the following shows and times dates this fall:
Novi HS Sept. 22
BOA Regional @ Silverdome Oct. 6
Clarkston HS Oct. 20
Lakeland HS Oct. 27
MCBA Finals @ Ford Field Nov. 3
This year’s drum majors are: Joe Milobar, Junior and Mallory Fuller, Senior.
Guard captains are: Meghan Carney, Heather Proimos and India Solomon.
FHS Orchestra
The FHS orchestra camp took place at Sherman Lake YMCA in Augusta, MI
this August. Students got back in playing shape through sectional and ensemble
rehearsals, and team building activities such as group initiatives and a low ropes
course. Orchestra camp a good mix of music, self discovery, and team building,
which makes for a great springboard to start the year. Orchestra concert dates:
10/30: HS Hijinx and Hilarity Concert – 7:30 p.m.
12/17: HS Winter Concert – 7:30
12/18: 5-8 Orchestra Concert – 6:30 p.m.
1/26: All City Extravaganza – FHS
5/15: 4th Grade Beginners Concert – 6:30 p.m.
5/21: 5-8 Orchestra Concert – 7 p.m.
5/22: HS Spring Concert – 7:30 p.m.
The Hijinx and Hilarity Concert has become an annual audience favorite. Orchestra
shares the concert with the choir to present a concert that is family friendly
but “not your normal concert.” This year’s theme is movies, and some of the
music the orchestra is considering playing includes: “The Magic of Pixar” (medley
featuring the music of Cars, Finding Nemo, Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Toy
Story), a Lion King Medley, “Reflection” from Mulan, “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les
Miserables, “Somewhere Out There” from An American Tail, and a Medley from The
Prince of Egypt. The audience is invited to come in costumes, and it has been a full
house every year. —Photo Credit: Audrey Langley
2012 Roosevelt Field Day
Despite the wet weather and holding the field day
indoors, Roosevelt students, staff and parents had a
great day of learning, laughter, fun and friendship.
Principal Dina Rocheleau says, “The purpose of
having a ‘field day’ at the beginning of each year is to
celebrate being at school, working together as a team
and collaborative game experiences. There were many
stations that students had to work together to complete
the activity. Collaboration is so important for
school-aged children to learn and understand. It
involves working together, problem solving and high
level thinking skills.
“Another focus for our field day is for parents to
attend and get to know their child’s new friends and
parents. I overheard two moms talking at the end of the
day for a ‘playdate’ this weekend!”
Important Reminder about
School Improvement Mondays
What: This school year, the district’s K-12 schools have begun a new, rigorous K-12
School Improvement initiative among all teachers, principals and instructional leaders.
The initiative, called “School Improvement Mondays,” will use the focus of Data Teams
with a goal of increasing student performance.
When: There will be School Improvement Mondays throughout the school year. On
these days, all students across the district will be dismissed 55 minutes early.
Why: The early release once each week provides teachers with structured time to
collaborate in rigorous and focused Data Teams meetings to examine student work,
review data, determine instructional strategies, and monitor implementation and
student progress.
Info for Parents: To accommodate parents on School Improvement Mondays, the
district will offer safe options for those parents whose children who need supervision
during the 55-minute early release. At the elementary level, an affordable K-6
School Age Child Care option is being offered. Latchkey will be provided on School
Improvement Mondays for children to remain at school until the regular dismissal
time. The additional hour will be offered at no charge to families already enrolled in
School-Age Child Care. For students using Latchkey for the one hour only on School
Improvement Mondays, and not enrolled in daily Latchkey, there is no registration fee.
See the sidebar for rates and options for older students.
