10 - Madison Cortland ARC - Summer 2012 WE ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY Board Member Voted In Jim Cooke can be found at ARC events taking pictures or teaching a class to Community Hab and Family Support students. Here he’s reviewing the photo project with student Jennifer Slover. The Board of Directors welcomes James Cooke to the Madison Cortland ARC Board. On June 1, the ARC membership elected Mr. Cooke to serve on the Board of Directors. Mr. Cooke is a Vietnam Veteran. His career includes owner of School Bus Service in Westchester County, and over thirty years experience in industries which includes Manufacturing Process Engineer for Buick and Cadillac; Director for Research & Development for Siemens; and directed logistics for laboratory automation with Siemens Global Strategic Marketing Group. After retirement, Jim moved to Chittenango with his family and really honed in on his love for photography. Jim has been a volunteer photographer for the Arc of Onondaga and Madison Cortland ARC. For the past four years Jim has taught a photography class to ARC students and every spring a photography exhibit is held at the Winoa Hall Activity Center in Oneida. Global Art Project for Peace http://www.globalartproject.org Cory Aubeuf-Loucks was in a coffee house in Utica and saw on the bulletin board a pamphlet describing the 2012 Global Art Project for Peace. It described Art for Peace as groups or individuals from around the world creating artwork expressing your vision of global peace and goodwill to exchange with another person or group. We had already missed the deadline to sign up when we learned of the Global Art Project but after several conversations with Katherine Josten, the Founder and Director of the Global Art Project we were matched with a Middle School in China. The Global Art Project is an International Art Exchange for Peace. Since 1994 there have been 100,000 participants from over 80 countries on seven continents. Participants create a work of art in any medium, expressing their vision of global peace and goodwill. The art is displayed locally in each participant’s community. Global Art Project then organizes an international exchange by matching participants—group-to-group and individual-to-individual. The exchange occurs biannually, resulting in thousands of people sending messages of Peace around the world at one time—visions of unity simultaneously encircle the Earth. The art is sent as a gift of global friendship and exhibited in the receiving community. The Senior Program spent the beginning of May working on our vision of peace. The concept was created by Cory Aubeuf-Loucks with the help of Brittany Bogardus. The artist, Ken Parker, inspired Cory’s vision for the Peace Project. She had viewed his sculptures in a museum and How do I love working at Madison Cortland ARC? Let me count the ways … By Elizabeth Rocker, Assistant Director of Residential Services I came to Madison Cortland ARC seven years ago. I currently am an Assistant Director of Residential, but have been an Employment Specialist, a Residence Manager, and the QMRP for Residential. Throughout this time, I have gotten married, had both my sons, obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and am currently writing my thesis for my Master’s Degree in Psychology. I have grown a great deal, both professionally and personally in these seven years, and I would not be the same person I am today nor achieved all this if it were not for my employment at Madison Cortland ARC. I was not familiar with the ARC mission when I started, but it did not take me long to discover what it was all about. It was about integrity, independence, respect, and support to the individuals we serve. It was apparent to me that my peers understood the mission as well. It was inspiring and encouraging reading every month in the Inside Scoop, a newsletter for employees, all the long-term employees the Agency had celebrating employment anniversaries. To me, that makes a statement, a statement that the leadership at ARC is a positive force, leadership that is here for the right reasons to guide and support individuals in a way that is in their best interest. Along with having values I believe in, the ARC has supported Cory Aubeuf-Loucks works with Anne Marie Bourke on “Reaching for Peace”. me in many ways . From helping me further my education to growing personally and professionally. The guidance I have is not only from within my department but from other departments as well. Rather than an “I’ll just do it” approach, there is often a “let me explain” approach. You learn how to solve the challenges you face, rather than having to depend on other people to figure things out for you. For me, this makes for such a respected and positive working environment. I have personally experienced the support throughout many departments, from my own, to the Quality Management department, Transportation, IT, and Executive Staff, just to name a few. I have the opportunity to enhance the Agency for my peers as well, and increase my knowledge in the technical world. By doing this, it gives me opportunities to improve ways of communication throughout the agency. This enhances the lives of the individuals we work with by being able to address issues and concerns in a more efficient manner, and as a team approach. I have a feeling of empowerment, which makes me want to thrive to find even more ways to help enhance the ARC, the lives of the individuals we serve, and to provide my peers with the tools to reach their full potential. Is everyday one of smiles and rainbows for me? Absolutely not, after all, I am only human. Do I have my days where the daily stress and obligations seem overwhelming? Of course. Have I lost sleep about decisions to be made or when issues arise that I am not entirely sure how to handle? You bet I was moved by his works. He is an artist who works in a wide range of media and materials to create his unique form of artwork. In the past he created art using mainly newspaper and tape to make simple sculpture in 3D form. Our whole program was engaged in our Project for Peace. Many Senior Program participants assisted in making our vision of “Reaching for Peace” including Richard Tuff, Gus Guarino, Rita Losurdo, Colleen Hall, Rosalie Leggett, Ann Marie Bourke, Jeanette Vanderhoff, Kay Jones, Patty Walsh, Ernie Hatch, Marcia Golden, Ed Carr, Joan Dowling, and Faith Cook. Other seniors made cards and small crafts to express peace and friendship between our group and our matched middle school group from China. Our program gives seniors the opportunity to participate in group, individual, and community activities. Now thanks to this opportunity we will reach out to the world at large. Our senior participants have greatly enjoyed their experiences in working on the Global Art Project. Many conversations have been generated around the subject of peace. It has also provided opportunities to learn about China and the cultural variations between countries. Liz Rocker, right, reviews a schedule with Colleen Hall. Liz has found a rewarding career at ARC. have. Do I agree with all the necessary push and pull of ARC? No. However, to me, those feelings are necessary, so that I know I am still here, 100%, and still here for the right reasons. 12 Summer 2012 - Madison Cortland ARC By all accounts the “Glow in the dARC” golf tournament was a rousing success! The weather conditions were perfect. The crowd was in the mood for a night of fun and got it. As many of you know, playing golf in daylight is a challenge in itself, but playing in the dark is an experience both golfers and non golfers could enjoy. Laughter could be heard all over the golf course. The glowing golf balls flying through the air and rolling up to the green surrounded by glowing fluorescent lights was a sight to see. All the players were treated to a lovely picnic between the two events as we waited for the sun to set and darkness to set in. After the Glow Golf Tournament, trophy’s were awarded to the nine In the Spirit of the dARC Wayne Horning took the Glow in the dARC to an extreme! Carts lined the path to begin the first Glow in the dARC Golf Tournament Team Captain Joe Zifchock receives his trophy for First Place in the 9 hole portion of Glow in the dARC hole winners. Ribbons were awarded to the second through sixth place winners. The Glow Golf winners were treated to bottles of Champagne! A fun raffle was held with prizes that included golf apparel, gift certificates to Loudmouth Golf, a Taylor Made putter and many other great gift certificates and prizes. The grand prize was two VIP tickets to a Playing in the dARC. After finishing the 3 holes in the dark, the golfers became the cheering section. The day began with 9 holes on a 90 degree day New York Yankees baseball game in New York City valued at $525, donated by the New York Yankees. We have already started planning the 2013 Glow in the dARC tournament. Stay tuned!
