On June 27, Charles “Chuck” Stevens received the Madison County Community Services Board Les Mitchell Award in the area of developmental disabilities. Chuck Stevens recently stepped down as President of the Building Futures Foundation, a public charity for Madison Cortland ARC. He is also Senior Vice President on the board of directors for Madison Cortland ARC. Mr. Stevens has been a long time volunteer helping people with developmental disabilities. When Chuck accepted the award he spoke about his grandson Zachary who has been an inspiration to him. “It’s an honor to receive the Community Service award. I would like to share with you a little history. It was July 7, 1989 when Zachary came into our lives. We were overjoyed. He was our first grandchild. At the time Zach seemed fine, but as time progressed the family was made aware of some health issues along with development Scholarship Awarded Robben VanLare Senior’s Plan Specialist Robben VanLare has been awarded the Jonathan Weingold Scholarship sponsored by NYSARC. This award is presented in memory of Jonathan Weingold, who was considered to be a symbol of the people supported by NYSARC, Inc. In 1970, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Nassau County Chapter, a tribute was paid to Jonathan by Executive Director, Helen Kaplan. It stated that Jonathan Weingold was “the symbol of all the young people who inspired the establishment of this organization and its services and programs.” Congratulations Robben! After seeing multiple doctors and receiving multiple explanations, the family was introduced to then Madison ARC Early Intervention Program. While Zach was in this program the very capable and thoughtful staff led by Kathy Campbell worked with Zach to help him develop the many skills that most of us develop automatically. In addition they provided the direction for the many resources that could be used for Zach’s future. With the loving support of his mother Sherri, his father Brian, sister Alycia, Uncle Matt, cousins Barbara and Susan, and especially my loving wife Sylvia, Zach’s grandmother and our extended family, Madison Cortland ARC, Zachary is living a very happy life. It’s because of him that my family is so supportive of the Madison Cortland ARC and why I have and will continue to volunteer” Congratulations Chuck Stevens! Gifts Made in Memory of: Pascal “Corky” Caviola Agencies Combine Names New Administration for Community Living: U.S. Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a new organization within the Department of Health and Human Services -- the “Administration for Community Living” (ACL). The ACL will include the Administration on Aging, the Office on Disability and the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) in a single agency with the goal of increasing access to community supports and full participation in all aspects of society, while continuing to focus specific attention and resources on the unique needs of people with disabilities of all ages and older Americans. In addition, in order to honor and acknowledge the current landscape and changes in contemporary language, as well as the work done through ADD to support the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, the Administration on Developmental Disabilities will become the “Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.” For additional information, please see www.hhs.gov/acl.
