Max the Garden Cat
Beloved Filoli garden cat Max,
passed away on June 10, shortly after
being diagnosed with cancer. A friend
to staff, volunteers and of many of
our visitors, he was happy following
people through the garden or joining
them on the benches near the Dressing
Rooms. Max could get sassy if petted
too long. An excellent addition to the
garden from the start, he would sit and
wait for hours until a varmint would
come out of its hole. In the last couple
years he even managed to catch a few
of the destructive rabbits that have
recently returned to the garden.
Max was found in January of 1990 by
garden volunteer Oliver McComas,
who brought the abandoned kitten

to the property. He lived the rest of
his life in the Sunken Garden area
tool shop, cared for by many area
gardeners over the years: Don Ellis,
Dolores Souza, Mike Schmidt, Ann
Jansen, Jim Salyards, Chuck Mustain,
John Peck, Mimi Clarke, Brooke
Starke, Sydney Nahay, Shannon
Bielicke and David Shippy.
And in the last few years, he spent
some warm nights in Lucy and
Jonathan’s house.
